         This great meadow rests between two forests. The heady oaks on either side occasionally rustle their branches, as kindly grandfathers looking down upon their grandchildren. Amid the meadow, faerie-elves dance, their giant hips swaying with the breezes and causing miniature earthquakes as they giggle and prance about the place. 
         "I do so love to hug everyone!" one enthuses. And before too long? They've broken into song, a perfect rainbow arcing out of nowhere and suddenly above them!
         "I love you, you love me, we're a..."
         And on and on it goes, the precious song of laughter and light spiraling upwards towards a perfect blue sky.
         And then, a bluebird flies by.
         And poops on you.

Good news, everyone! There's a mission at the guild for the enterprising adventurer! Every now and again, alchemists and wizards need more difficult to obtain reagents. That's why you're presently smooshing your way through a swamp outside of Alexandira, hunting a specifically described set of mushrooms. It's cold out. There's a striff breezee. The ground is muddy. There are lots of mushrooms in this swamp you've ventured into under direction.

Did we mention 'mud'?

There's a lot of that.

GAME: Davienne rolls survival: (1)+7: 8 (EPIC FAIL)

Davienne is in her element! Well, almost. Swamps are not exactly her thing, but hunting mushrooms down? Getting a bit grimy? That is indeed this little rangers jam. She even looks a little excited. The bugs stay away from her and she smells like she rolled in lemons or oranges and something more astringent. She's already picked a lovely couple of mushrooms she is just sure are going to sautee up good...

Sabine walks as carefully as she can through the mud and muck of the swampy land. Her cloak pulled tight about her for the warmth and her colorful bird on her shoulder looking puffed up and miserable. Every now and again the bird pecks at her. "Look! It's not /my/ fault it's wet here!" She says in exasperation at the peacock. "Stop pecking me!" She tries for quiet tones but it's filled with heat.

Jozi expecting this to be one those kinds of missions, has worked her hair back into a Myrrish braid so she can see what's going on better, and devotes a majority of her attention to do just that. The orc-blooded muses, "Pretty bird ya got there, sugar, but aren't ya worried, bringin' him out to a place like this?" to the woman being harried by her pet, and the half-sil forages for dinner.

Sargon walks carefully through the mud. His weight makes him sink with every step, and he has to tug at his leg to pull it out. After especially tough steps he raises the leg, wipes a bit of mud off and examines his foot - to make sure he hasn't lost his boot. "Mushrooms," he mutters. "I see nothing but mushrooms. But we're hunting a special kind, no doubt..." he keeps up a running commentary of grumbling as he goes.

YOu are, indeed, hunting a specific kind of mushrooms. A large, white mushroom with a brown cap and speckled with black. It is apparently not poisonous to *handle*, at least according to the information you were granted. You were, of course, also told to look out for the giant snakes that tend to lurk in places like this and their predators, like the dire badgers.

In any case, you're finding plenty of mushrooms with *white* speckles, and not a whole lot of black yet. Also, the mud is getting worse.

Sargon is at times sinking thigh-deep in the mud. It's hard to pull one leg out because this makes the other sink a bit further. He barks a curse in Yrch-speak. But then almost anything spoken in Yrch sounds like curses. "It would be easier for me if this were water!" he grunts.

Davienne wrinkles her nose as the mud gets worse. And as is smart seeks to find higher ground where it isn't so cloying and sucking and hard to treat. She pauses on a mound of earth and peers out across the swamp with pursed lips. "It would. Let's try and find firmer and higher ground. The mud could be a problem if we run into snakes. It doesn't slow them down near as bad."

Bina looses one of her boots and has to search for it, muttering curses of her own. She finds it and takes of the mate to walk barefoot. "My bird wouldn't stay home. Demands food on schedule and things he's the master." She does perk up at the words firmer ground and nods vigerously. "Yes please.. firmer ground."

Jozi grins a little and reaches back to offer the fellow a hand just in case he should need it, "Try pushin' off that greyish root there." She turns back toward the sound of the woodswoman's words and nods, "Sounds right t'me, sugar, lead on!" She smiles to Sabina, still in her usual, casual cheer, "Well, he -is- getting his way. Just means ya love him, right?" Then she glances along the overhanging branches just in case.

The mud is going to be a problem regardless, but at least Davienne seems to know the best way through. Knowing swamps sure helps!

The mushrooms are getting larger. And larger. And larger.

SOme of them are now reaching up to your knees in height with thicker, spongy caps.

Finally, you reach what appears to be a vale.

A vale of *shrooms*.

These are as tall as you are, with the caps to match. They are wide and tall and... very... shroomy.

This vale of mushrooms extgtends easily in all directions. They're packed together.

Sargon takes the advice and the offered hand and then does his best to struggle along. Breathing heavily, he comes to the edge of the vale and looks in wonder. "I've never seen anything like this," he murmurs.

Davienne peers across the swamp with pursed lips and then points. "If we stay on the grassy hillocks we should be able to avoid the worst of it, while still getting good vantage spot for spying the mushrooms," Davienne says with confidence as she moves on to the next little hillock rising from the muck. And as they cross the threshold into that valley Davi pauses. "Whoa..." She murmers to herself. "That's a lot of mushrooms..." And begins to go through her own knowledge of various mushrooms. Thinking of what potentially here may bring in some extra gold.

Sabina's eyes grow wider and wider the larger the shrooms grow. She then laughs softly and claps twice. Not loud considering her one hand has shoes in them. "This is wonderful. Like one of those fairy-tales I heard when I was a child. To think something like this was real all along." The bird meeps softly, eyes looking around for giant worms to eat.

Smiling approvingly as her offer was accepted without offense, Jozi turns and starts to make her way along anew. She doesn't see anything particularly threatening, but, she's not from around these parts to, falling back to leg count is about the best she's got. If the sogginess in her boots is any great distress, she's not showing it. She does wonder about the giant shrooms and, on a lark, palms a small object from her belt pouches and begins to murmur something to herself, or rather under her breath to The Mother, as she surveys the potential bounty around them. Ok, wow, "Yeah, don't anybody get the munchies, now. About half of these are poison."

Sargon creeps slowly after. His boots still make soft squelching noises from the mud from before, or perhaps new mud among the mushrooms. He uses his height to try and peer at the top of the mushrooms, over if he can, looking for the elusive white speckles.

Of course, you've finally located what looks to be the right mushrooms, admist these larger ones. Standing about your height, the black-speckled-caps are now at last located.

But, of course, that's when another mushroom starts screaming at you.

No, really. It's shrieking.

Davienne nods her head in agreement with Jozi. "Yeah, though if you would like to see what waits beyond death you're welcome too," She says with a smirk. Slowly she moves out amongst the forest, turning to stare at the fungal diversity. "There might be some fungal monsters about too, so keep your gua-" And then the shrieking begins.

Sargon flinches, eyes watering and clapping his hands over his own ears at the sound. When it shows no signs of relenting, he begins moving towards the source of the noise. He whips one arm in a throwing motion, revealing the sling he had there. A stone whistles through the air and plunks off of the mushroom monster's trunk.

The toadstool, purple-speckled that lurked beneath a larger one, continues to emit a loud, loud noise. It can't stop, won't stop, apparently.

It just... keeps shrieking. Loudly.

It's horrible.

Bina yelps, putting hands to ears and jumping back more then a few feet. Pulling the holy symbol from her bodice she says a prayer louder then she should be speaking to Tarien. "Lord of laughter! I ask for your boon to heal away the wounds that cause dispair!"

Davienne cringes from the shrieking, but is already moving forward. Scimitar sliding free to slice at the fungal shrieker's wide base. "Shut up you fungal fuck!" She can be heard to shout as her blade slices off a piece. "Thanks!" Is then heard from the half-elf as her wounds begin to close.

Jozi is about to comment in reponse to the nature advisory when a sudden unending scream brings her hands to her ears wtih such ferver that she almost embeds whatever her recent fidget was in the side of her head! Gritting her teeth she slogs forward toward the shrieking fungoid the hand with... whatever it is curling into a fist about the object while her warhammer is tugged from her belt frogs. She steps alongside the others and with a fierce arc of her arm, she leaves three deep, silencing slashes into the mushroom banshee's stem. She blinks wide eyed at the sudden ringing semi-silence and calls back, "Thanks, sugar!" as she notices the pain is gone.

Sargon apparently misses the Shrieker has stopped. He clenches his hands into fists shifts into a fighting stance. And then he punches it repeatedly. Only after a few blows land does he slow and stop. "I, ah...I had to make sure," he explains, although it's clear he's a little embarassed.

Davienne looks around and then up. When she does she points up to alert the other to the presence of purple fungal 'things' peering down. "Violet fungus. Don't let them touch you. They spread a rotting disease," She says with fair confidance. The scimitar is plunged into a nearby mushroom as she pulls out her bow to fire at the big one.

The priest of Tarien blinks and looks up where Davienne juts shot and lets out a small meep of her own. While looking around for any nearby critters like that she raises her hands to cast a spell and a shimmer of acrance energy wraps about her before going unseen. "Oozes and now fungus! Uggh!"

Hearing the warning, Jozi lets the hammer slip from her hand as she thumbs the strap from the thick armed, compact horsemans bow she keeps at her back. An arrow is nocked and loosed with a bassy twang, perhaps too swiftly as it flies straight 'under' the dangerous fungus relative to her point of intent.

As Davi points it out, each of you can turn your eyes up to see a total of three, additional fungal creatures. Indeed, they are quite purple, from the look of them and they are wiggling across the caps of the other mushrooms towards the source of the screaming noise.

And you're still in mud.

The largest of the fungus drops down between the spoace the shrieker was in and Sargon. A tentacle blindly lashes out, more feeling for his presence than anything else, and doesn't actually connect.

These things seem kind of blindish.

Sargon focuses his will and summons the power of a ring he wears to craft a protective force around himself. He moves towards the fungus and tries to position himself between the rest of the party and the fungus. "I'll try to keep them away from the rest of you!" he cries.

Davienne makes a face as the large fungi falls to the ground. Moving back as she draws her bow and takes aim at the purple monstrosity. The arrow is loosed and flies through the air to bury itself neatly in spongy flesh.

Two more fungus drop down. They seem less intersted in Sargon, perhaps because he's already the meal for the larger one, and are searching out for other mnoving prey. Perhaps sensing Davienne's movement, they both head her direction, but don't quite reach.

Each of these are generally shaped like a giant mushroom, but have horrible, drippy tentacles off them. They move slow, at least, so there is that.

Fungus falling from on high! Sabina has flashbacks of ooze monsters and wrings her hands for a moment. Then she reaches for the holy symbol once more. "Oh Lord of Laughter grant us your blessing against these foes! So that we may share a drink and laugh at this on the morrow... or years from now.. " A burst of energy radiates out to briefly touch all in the group.

The half orcess bites back a curse as she misses and company comes a-callin', "Move, sugar, got two on ya!" and perhaps still in too much of a hurry due to the wierd, or the fact that she still has a small something in her bow hand, she looses an arrow that wooshes between the fungasaries and... maybe, just.. kinda, whistles past the half elf's left hear, "Sorry!" At least the right 'sugar' probably realizes who she's trying to... 'warn'.

The horrible fungus lashes out at Sargon, its touching wounding him, but worse, *stripping* flesh from bone grusomely. It just seems to slough off, like the skin of something living-but-should-be-dead.

It's...really unpleasent to watch and a stark minder that you probably shouldn't let these things touch you.

Davienne hears the warning and turns her attention to the two smaller shrooms giving chase. Making a face she takes off at a sprint away from them. Pausing at a safe distance to shoot at one of them. The arrow hits spongy flesh and she looks like she is going to try and beat feet again. Run and shoot is the name of the game. The two lesser fungus are slow. Very slow. It looks like Davienne will be able to considerably outpace them without much difficulty, given their waddling gait.

Of course, they seem to be turning their attention towards Jozie and Sargon, not to mention Sabina, since they're closer...

The mage-priest sees a good opening from where she stands. A good time to throw one of her two daggers. She pulls out the blade and rears back with it looking like she might really loft it to the heavens. But the throw is true! And one of the smaller mushrooms blooms a dagger.

Sargon trades blows with one of the fungus. His scaled hands begin glowing red as he punches it repeatedly. But the monster gives as good as it gets. Beyond the horrible injuries, Sargon feels his strength being sapped away.

Jozi is a little wierded out and doesn't like leaving the big man alone, though she is forced to draw back to stay out of 'rotting disease' distance. She makes a few slurping, splashing steps, getting mud in places she'd rather not before readying another arrow, and, guided by her faith, her training... and the grace of the Tarien priestess, she looses it into the creature, with an impish little giggle, without realizing it.

Sargon circles in one direction and then the other, jabbing with several quick punches and then twisting to punch it with one last more forceful blow. His entire hands are glowing red now and puffs of smoke rise with each succesfull strike.

Tentacles lash out at Sargon, wrapping around his arm and making the bones creak painfully for him, but, perhaps with the help of his training, he's able to hold off the effects of the rot. For the moment.

The two violet fungus roll over towards Jozi, since they remained closer, and lash out at them. One out of two tentacles manges to strike them.

It looks like it hurt, though thankifully that odd, rotting ichor doesn't do its job on Jozi for the moment.

Sabina pulls the second and last dagger from her belt and lifts it to her lips to kiss for good luck. "Tarien.. please guide my hand!" A rear back and a throw with a grunt at the end. The dagger whirls and strikes true, knocking it over and stilling it's movements.

Whoa, Momma, these things are faster than she thought! The blow hurt, but Jozi is thankfully not rotting away, and so the bow is allowed to slip from her hand, though whatever else is there is caught between her thumb and palm before it can fall to the mud. Her fist tightens and she rakes the mushroom across the cap with her clawed gauntlet before edging back the way she came, intent on reclaiming her hammer in case by the time she reaches it, the creature still needs to be shown that it's, in fact, a tent stake.

Sargon is hunched over in a boxer's stance now. He punches with his lead fist, then almost before it's pulled back he is turning and punches with his other fist, then twisting to uppercut with the first. He's starting to take chances and leave himself open, and suffers for it as the the monster strikes him again. Sargon is swaying and clearly has trouble keeping himself on his feet now.

On the other hand, those tentacles are getting well and truly batted away and deflected by Sargon, but there's four of them and one does strike him again, melting away flesh. His ribcage looks... dangerously exposed in a spot now.

A tentacle lashes out at Jozi! Fortunately for them, it does not hit. AT all.

Davienne pulls another arrow and tracks the violet fungus as it goes after Jozi. The arrow is loosed and flies straight and true to hit the mushroom solidly. Another arrow is drawn with determined calm.

Bina is out of options! She has nothing put the quarterstalf that is muddy from being used as a walking stick and steadier. She rushes up on bare feet and brings the stick down atop the cap with a meaty thwack. "Please die.. please die.. please die!"

It's clearly taking its toll on Sargon, leaving him *badly* wounded this time. Iot's not so much the physical damage, but rather, its spreading, corruptive, rotting influence.

Sargon is definitely looking wobbly now.

A tentacle wraps around Jozi's leg, trying to pull her down to the ground. It fails.

But it does look like it hurt.

Davienne continues to take careful aim and shoot at the smaller of the purple fungus still standing. "Don't let it touch you!" She shouts in warning as her next arrow flies. Only to strike a glancing blow against it's crowd. "Shit."

Jozi steps back and pulls free their shortbow. An arrow is fired!

..but that poor branch Davi hit earlier now has TWO arrows in it.

Bina brings her staff up and down thwaping at the shroom monster and asking it nicely to die! She seems very shocked when the thing seems to comply with her wishes and falls over. "Oh.. Thank you!"

Sargon stumbles back away from the creature. He does his best to walk backwards without ever taking his eyes off of it while his fingers dig into a small satchel at his waist and produce a potion.


"Oi! SPOREHEAD! Over here!" Davienne shouts at the big mushrooms still lumbering about. Then she lets loose her arrow and it's sharp point emphasises her taunt. Good thing she's about 40' back.

Bina looks up to see the rather larger thing about to eat the one person that sems to be affecting it well. And.. she panics. The quarterstaff is lifted over her head and whirled off and away in a vain attempt to hit the creature with it at range. It rattles across some of the shrooms in the area and to the ground.

Jozi takes advantage of the distraction caused by Sabina to put an arrow right throiugh it its stunmpy middle. It works. It works really well, actually, leaving the thing oozing to the ground.

But you still have those damn shrooms to find...

Davienne nods to Jozi with a fierce grin and says, "Nicely hit." She retrieves her scimitar and looks around. Far more cautious for more screamers and violet fungus. But also? For the mushrooms they came here for. As an afterthought she carefully cuts a hunk of violet fungus off, with her gloves on, and carefully tucks it in an extra pouch.

Sargon sinks to his knees as the creature falls. He nods his thanks to Jozi. But when he stands he has to take a moment before he can finally rise to his feet. "That was close," he wheezes.

Despite the serious injuries incurred by a couple members of the party, a little more searching leads you able to finally locate the handful of particular reagents ytou need.

Now there's just a long walk back through the mud.

So.

Much.

Mud.

...and then it stars to rain.

Davienne watches as the monk slides to the ground. Frowning she moves over to help him up. "Here, lean on me. I got you," She says helpfully, continuing to scan the area around them for the black-spotted mushrooms they came for. And when she spots them she crows with delight. "Here we are! You just rest there, watch for more violet fuckers, and we'll harvest," She tells Sargon. Her joy only lasts until the rain. Then there is a LOT of muttering. Creative as Sargon learns along the way, as she opts to just piggy-back him through some muddy places.
