About Flaws
Rpp limited.gif For every strength, there is a weakness, and so even the mightiest of balors knows that the light of divinity is their downfall. Our Flaws RPP spend gives you benefits for developing this vulnerability. You may select as many Flaws as you like, but can only receive rewards for one. These Flaws may alter and change over time - as characters tend to do - as things that are overcome or develop into deeper Flaws. In addition, you can combine them with your POPs and other character-focused stories for additional rewards!

We highly recommend choosing (at least) one Flaw for your character. It will help give your character depth and realism. After all, no one and nothing is perfect, so why should our characters be? There is a great deal of satisfaction to be found for helping your character realize (or not), develop (or not), and grow through their Flaw - even if that growth is in the Flaw rather than out of it.


Overview

Despite the name, Flaws do not cost any RPPs to gain; they are more like an opt-in system that grant RPPs and additional rewards when a character with a Flaw roleplays their Flaw. A character may possess any number of Flaws, but a character may only receive a reward for one Flaw. (See the Awards section later in this article for more information.)

Flaws may develop and change over time as roleplay develops. For example, a character with the Phobia flaw may be forced to confront their phobia of fire while in a PRP, and as a result of engaging with fire, they come out the event with a deeper phobia of fire (or other things in the environment) or having discovered that they can, under pressure, protect their fellow adventurers despite their phobia.

How Flaws Work

Typically, a player either gives their character a Flaw in the chargen process or requests a Flaw through +request/spend. Once the Flaw is in place on a character’s sheet, a player may submit a +request/prp request with links to at least three (3) scene logs on the wiki that demonstrate how the Flaw is impacting the character. You may request a Flaw reward for a character once per month; this Flaw reward does not impact your ability to request a Flaw reward on any other character(s) you play.

A scene log can be anything from a social scene to a PRP or staffer-run event. The only kind of log that does not count for a Flaw reward is a character vignette uploaded to the wiki, since it is not a scene.

Flaw Options

The following list presents some options and suggestions to get you started for character Flaw ideas. You are welcome to submit your own idea for a Flaw.

NOTE: Flaws can not and should not be used as an excuse for a player to express bad behavior or violate our policies. Flaws are IC behaviors only. Choosing a flaw that expresses bad behavior or antagonizes other characters IC is acceptable, but IC conflict that results from a Flaw should not cross over into OOC behavior. It is important to remember that a character is not their player; a character may espouse beliefs, and feelings, and act in ways that their player does not agree with. However, if a player takes the conflict to OOC communications, please contact staff. Staff also highly suggests that if your character is about to do something that might be antagonistic, warning other players in advance of your poses is a good way of reminding your fellow players that you are separate from your character’s behavior.

Intolerance*: Unwillingness to accept views, beliefs, or behavior that differ from one's own. For example, a character with this Flaw is unreasonably intolerant of a specific group, thing, belief, or more, which others find to be commonplace, perhaps to the point of strife or conflict.
Phobia: Extreme or irrational fear or dislike of a specified thing or group.
Hatred*: Intense dislike or ill will. For example, a character with this Flaw is unreasonably expressing their hatred toward a specific source.
Low Self-esteem: A lack of confidence in one's own worth or abilities; and/or their own sense of self-respect.
Partial to Complete Blindness/Deafness/Other Physical Disability: A physical disability that does not fully impair a character’s ability to adventure, but does impact their daily life in a world with many societies built around the able-bodied. For example, a character with this Flaw can be partially or completely deaf in one or both ears, partially or completely blind in one or both eyes, or require assistance (such as Prosthetic Limbs) to get around.
Infamous Family: A character with this Flaw has a family that is well known for some bad quality or deed. This association with them can be troublesome, embarrassing, or perhaps even outright dangerous. This doesn’t necessarily mean a character with this Flaw is following in the footsteps of their forebears, but even if they’ve fallen far from the tree that birthed them, they can’t easily escape the family name.
Lack of Common Sense: Lacking good sense and sound judgment in practical matters and daily life.
Lack of Focus or Concentration: Difficulty with the action of focusing attention or mental effort.
Compulsive: An irresistible urge, especially one that is against conscious wishes. The urge may be mental, but it could also be physical. Whatever it is - an attempt at perfection, cleanliness, gambling, or more - a character with this Flaw has little to no control over it.
Overconfident: Being excessively or unreasonably confident. A character with this Flaw has a high opinion of themselves that may lead them into danger, and characters who suffer from overconfidence can often blame negative outcomes on other factors.
Driving Goal: A goal that directs and compels actions and is rarely far from the mind, to the point that a character with this Flaw may abandon other goals to pursue their driving goal.
Uneducated: Lacking an education; or being poorly educated. A character with this Flaw may be illiterate as well.
Tactless*: Having or showing a lack of adroitness and sensitivity in dealing with others or with difficult issues.
Gullible: Being easily persuaded to believe something even if it is not truthful or credulous, and/or being too trusting or even overly generous whether it is warranted or not.
Vanity: Exhibiting excessive pride in or admiration of their own appearance and/or achievements.
Coddling: Treating others in an indulgent or overprotective way.
Other: If you have an idea for another Flaw that is not listed, please feel free to contact staff to work out ideas and add the relevant Flaw to your character!

* The ambition of a Flaw is to tell a more interesting story, not to hurt real people’s feelings. Please keep this in mind as you tell your character’s story and participate as a player at the table!
