  • Summary: In the Temple of Daes, a portal is open to a street full of screams. Nearby adventurers are already answering 'the call'. There is a Totem of some sort, of bodies bound together necromantically, and nearby zombies, spreading through the streets. Battle ensues, with two groups divided by barriers and walls of force. Paenitia and Aryia take defense on the line, while Faranth and Mercy fire at range. Jinks and Seyardu keep up moral, and health, with well timed songs or channels of divinity. They also get attacks in, where they can. The barrier falls, zombies rush, but the group manages to hold the line, even clear some space. Suddenly, all their foes collapse. Something has disabled the totem; the group advances to find out what the more experienced adventurers know.

"From what I could tell, the bodies had some manner of spell placed on them. Necromancy," Malik reports. "I could not tell you what the magic was intended for." And more quietly, almost a mutter, "Nor do I wish to imagine..." But he finishes up with, "The Vardamans would not speak of it. So one can only surmise that he is getting -- artistic, once more."

"Not idly does he target us," Seldan agrees, eyes also going to the scar on Malik's neck. He seems about to say more, but cuts himself off short at the mention of necromancy. "It had necromancy upon it?" A flash of that fury rekindles in his expression. "Mal, we must return to it, _now_. Parts of innocent bodies, enchanted with necromancy, may well walk as undead, within the city streets!"

He drops Malik's hand and strides forward to the center of the room. "I must return, now. Do you return with me, you may find danger, but I would welcome the aid of any. I am a fool, that I did not suspect Eclavdran of worse than being macabre."

A door opens for those going with Seldan to face whatever the demon known as Eclavdran has left as a 'gift' for Seldan. Already the sound of screams and chanting can be heard, and those staying steel themselves to the knowledge that the best they can do is bring an /army/ as quickly as is possible. The rest step through the doorway, knowing that a fight awaits them on the other side. It can not prepare them for the reality that awaits.

Now

Aryia was already there, hopping through the portal from the Temple of Daeus. Her hair is tied back with a ribbon and her cestuses were tied tight against her fists. The scarred mul was equal parts steeled, and equal parts frightened of the prospect, and the sight before her. But she had people with her that she trusted.

She cracks her knuckles. Let's see what we can do here.

Seyardu was one of the first through the portal. The sight was concerning, but she couldn't let the undead roam the streets or disappear elsewhere. She was strapping on her shield, and taking stock of the situation.

Faranth often wanders the temple district, caring for the plants there. Today, she and her companion elephant are bringing a trunkfull of water up from the river to water a few of the plants that don't normally get much in the way of natural waterfall due to the shape of the temple buildings. As the pair approach the district however, something is obviously wrong. They pick up the pace a bit, bursting into the temple district from one of the roads that leads down to the river. Faranth scans the area, trying to see where she and MalGein can lend a hand. MalGein senses the danger in the air and lets the trunkfull of water loose in a trumpeting shower.

Paenitia is a woman on a mission, a Red Knight astride an Ivory Steed, rushing from the Temple of Althea to the Temple of Daues. How she got lost and ended up near the Sage Orum is anyone's guess, her mask does limit her ability to see.

Perhaps Ramirez heard the screams. In any event, they are there, setting shield and drawing her lance, looking around to take stock of the situation.

There's a shop down a short flight of steps at the mouth of an alley not so far away to be clear of the screams. A brass censer hangs above the door frame lazily shedding thin wisps of a pungent smoke. A sign at the top of the stairs reads 'Balms, Poultices, and Ingested Remedies.'

Jinks appears at the top of the stairs tucking a small, (gnome) fist-sized sack into his belt and frowning deeply. He struggles to see through the press of taller bodies for a beat before realizing the towering mass of tangled gore extends well above the heads of your average tallman. His sunken, dark-ringed onyx eyes go wide.

The platinum and black garbed inquisitor with the symbol of Daeus on her cloak is, unsurprisingly, in the temple when this happens. Summoned by whatever alarm is sounded she bounds through the entrance and looks around trying to take in the scene.

<OOC> Mercy says, "Okay I'd like to caste bless does that cover the whole party or do I have to pick someone?"
GAME: Mercy casts Bless. Caster Level: 2 DC: 14

Mercy quickly gestures and says "blessing of Deaus on you and your works of JUSTICE this day!" then backs off a bit reaching for her crossbow.

GAME: Jinks spends ONE use of BARDIC PERFORMANCE.
<OOC> Jinks says, "An affected ally receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects"
<OOC> Jinks says, "and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls."
<OOC> Jinks says, "This'll stack with the +1 to hit from Bless but not the saves against Fear."
GAME: Jinks rolls Knowledge/Religion: (10)+8: 18

Jostled by the crowd moving away from the attack, Jinks staggers and wills away the illusion wrapping his tiny frame. Colors and lines blur, shifting from a fine modern coat of stylish cut to well-stitched adventuring garb of leather and matte-black studs. He wears an elaborate silver circlet that dips around an onyx gem in the place of a third eye and looses the tiny recurve bow from the harness on his back. 'Zombies are slow but strong. The flesh-tower is an unknown monstrosity.'

The gnome licks his blue-stained lips and sucks in a long breath, searching for the Hymn a moment before his voice pulses through the streets; around, over, and between the panicked civilians. "Show me forgiveness, Coyote," he sings, "for having lost faith in myself." <gnomish>

"Hola!" Paenitia shouts, assessing the situation. She points with her lance, "Do not approach the Totem. Serr Seldan is handle that. I will stand between the horde."

There are cracks in the barrier, and shifting her lance point to the first escaping zombie, the knight and hippogryph charge.

Cautiously.

Still, the lance point rams home, piercing the chest of the undead, and dropping it. "Ramirez will strike those that try to run past. The advance past us and close to the totem is not advised."

GAME: Seyardu casts Prayer. Caster Level: 6 DC: 16

<OOC> Aryia says, "also enemies take -1 to basically everything, btw"

"We must trust the other group to do their job." She shouts to those present. "Help the priests hold them back, keep them away so we can assist them in their work!"

She places a hand to her breastplate, offering a brief prayer. "Celestial mother, aid your children in this time of need. Bolster our spirits to see us through." <draconic>

The wall of force erected by Seldan and the clerics of Vardama begins to crack under the pressure...

GAME: Aryia rolls cmb+3: (2)+9+3: 14

Aryia gets the same idea as Paenitia, fill up the hole. She dashes forward, shoulder checking one of the priests out of the way of danger as she replaces their spot. She brings her fists up and hops on the balls of her feet. Ready to lay some smack down on any that try to pass. She nods towards the Lucht Knight.

<OOC> Faranth is going to scan for cracks in the wall of force to throw a spear at one of the oncoming enemies.
<OOC> MalGein is going to ready an action to intercept the first zombie that tries to attack Faranth.

GAME: Faranth rolls 1d8+1+1+1: (6)+1+1+1: 9

Faranth notes all the cracks in the failing shieldwall and selects a likely target that is battering against the magics protecting the group from the oncoming horde. She hefts one of her spears and hurls it through the gap, impaling into one of the zombies, knocking it slightly to the side with the force of the attack.

Meanwhile, MalGein shifts nervously from one foot to the other beside Faranth. He doesn't quite know what to do, but he'll be damned if one of those horrible smelling things is going to attack HIS pet!

Shouting "Release for your from your tortured unlife, and death to the one who did this to you. Such will be JUSTICE done", takes a bead and launches a bolt from her crossbow. Flying as True as JUSTICE. it takes a zombie perfectly through right eye.

<OOC> Jinks says, "Maintain Inspire as a free action. A 20' move to try and find a decent shot at a zombie.

The little gnome scampers, his progress aided as the panicked and fearful quickly clear the immediate space around the attack. The flash of Ramirez' plumage draws a glance and so, too, does the massive bulk of MalGein as he continues to belt his defiance through the press. "And let my own interior up / to inferior forces."

Jinks secures a thin needle of an arrow from his quiver and finds a clear shot, drawing back and firing in a single fluid motion. The missile pierces into the meaty back of the lumbering undead with a staccato whistle. <gnomish>

"Thank you my friend!" Paenitia says, as Ayria runs up beside her, shoving zombies back. She levers her lance about, stabbing, spinning a zombie, the second stab piercing the back of its head, sending it tumbling to the ground.

"Ole! Keep chipping away!"

'Ruaaaah!" Ramirez attacks! He bites down, his beak tearing through undead flesh. He makes a squawk of disgust. This is not a good thing to bite! His stomach turns enough his first talon swipe misses.

It is the second though, that catches the leg, and he pulls the zombie apart.

It is disgusting. Yes.

The wall of force shatters and the front line of zombies go down but there are more of them... More to pour forward and attack Vardamen and adventurers alike. The Vardamen do not fare as well as the adventurers do against these new attacks.

"That wall does not look stable!" She shouts to those present. And sure enough, it falls soon after. with a hand on her breastplate, the cleric lets loose a wave of positive energy, mending wounds, and causing the initial wave to crumple to the ground as the necromantic magics present are undone by the cleric.

Aryia tenses up as the wall cracks, and shatters away, only for the remnants to be replaced by divine power that turns undead flesh to dust. Her fist crashes into one that reaches forward towards her, grabbing their head and breaking it open with her knee. She twists on the spot, tucking in tight before leaping over and snapping a kick upwards and out. Snapping an undead's neck and dropping them.

She bounces on her feet and brushes at her nose with her thumb, feet tapping the ground in time with their bard's tune.

GAME: Faranth rolls weapon4+3: (19)+2+3: 24

Faranth hurls her next spear, fingering the three remaining weapons in her shield hand. The spear strikes true again, but like the first is not enough to take down a zombie on her own. She readies another spear while MalGein hops between his front feet, getting excited by all the fighting in front of him, but still not quite sure where to best help.

GAME: Mercy rolls weapon1+3: (1)+4+3: 8 (EPIC FAIL)

Mercy would clap for joy at the performance of the party if her hands weren't full. Instead, her eye's smile crinkles deepen as she coolly cocks the favourite crossbow of her collection. This one has an odd vertical grip separate from the stock and the wood is lacquered a lethal matt black. She takes aim that the walking zombie with a spear sticking out of it narrows her eyes and...

TWANG! "OUCH!"

Drops the bow to hard cobbles of the alley as the string breaks and lashes her hands.

"This will NOT hinder my pursuit of JUSTICE" she says still buoyed by the Bard's song. Instead she reaches under her cape for the second crossbow in her collection. "This is your chance to become my new precious." she says to it.

Jinks is comfortable behind the front line of holy men and brawlers for the time being. There's no seeing beyond the press of reanimated dead, anyway. His frown remains perpetual as he continues to sing, "The shame is endless / but if soon start forgiveness..."

Wheep-thick goes another arrow, finding the rotting socket of a zombie's eye and pressing out the rotten-fruit soft skull at the back. It tumbles to spill spoiled offal and agitated maggots on the street. <gnomish>

"Stand together comrades! We can hold the line." Paenitia calls out, thrusting her lance over one side of the saddle, then the other. A zombie is stabbed, another is pierced.

Working with her, like a killing machine, Ramirez snaps and claws at the foes she has damaged.

Two go down, he takes a third on his own. Rotting flesh is smeared and sprayed about the cobblestones.

'RRRRuuuAAHH!' The giant white peacock(-horse) is unrelenting.

"Friend Dragon, watch the Grey Lady's followers!"

<OOC> Seyardu says, "going to channel energy for healing, then"
GAME: Seyardu rolls 3d6: (13): 13

"If you are injured, fall back! We will keep you safe in the retreat." Seyardu shouts to those who were injured when the wall fell. She places her hand back on the armor, sending out more energy, this time washing over the clerics and guards, mending their injuries.

Suddenly the tower in the center of the fray falls apart into bits and pieces, and the undead that came from it cease to move, all of them falling to the ground like puppets with their strings cut.

Faranth watches all the undead drop lifeless to the ground and tilts her head. "Odd that they were all connected to each other." She walks up to one of the zombies with a spear sticking out of it and pulls her weapon free, a still excited and nervous MalGein following behind her, ready to gore the first zombie that stands up. <tradespeak>

The dust of the unfallen is caked on Aryia from the ichor she made with her bare hands. Just as she was about to launch into another leaping flurry of strikes, her combatants cease to move, the magic binding them failing and withering away. She blows some air out of her nose and dusts herself off, only succeeding in smearing everything around.

She turns and gives a bloody thumbs up to all.

Mercy puts her second favourite repeat crossbow away after briefly stroking it's amber walnut finish. then with a grimace she picks up the black one with a pistol grip and sighs at it like a mother with a recalcitrant child. "Now, Now Precious. We'll get you fixed up anon." Then she looks around and addresses the party. "Comrades we have done JUSTICE here!"

"... this gnome might live." Jinks simply speaks the last line of the song, letting the words untangle from the Hymn and sneak from between his stained lips as an afterthought. He takes a breath and lowers the bow, turning to regard the assorted heaps of corpses and scattered, dismembered corpse-bits littering the streets.

'What called the Black Dream to fill the streets?' He asks of no one in particular, eyes narrowed. <gnomish>

Suddenly, the zombies fall, and Seyardu shoves one of them off of her shield, with a deep exhale. "We must make sure they do not move again." She states to those present, already picking her way through the bodies to find any of the living who had fallen or been injured themselves.

"Ole! We prevail comrades! The day is won!" Paenitia cheers, thrusting her lance in the air. She pats the neck of her peacock-andalusian, long solid stroke, "I get you clean soon my friend."

The little lucht knight turns on the saddle of her majestic beast, and looks at those around her. She has a distinctive mask, which covers her entire face. A Smiling Man's mask, with a mustache and a wide grin. A complete mismatch for her feminine form and voice.

"Listen, there is much you need to know. This is the machinations of a Demon Duke of the Iron Hells. He send a surprise as a message, that totem we fight. He has the network of cultists, led by his consort, Mariela."

She points her lance forward, "The Silverguard Seldan, he know the full details. Know that if you choose to stand against him, it will be the long hard road."

"I am not the stranger to these fights. Thank you all for stand here with me, I count myself much fortunate. I go to hear what he have to say."

With that said, she nudges her peacock-andalusian forward.

Ramirez carefully picks his way through the bodies. He is finicky about stepping in gore. Yes.

Jinks seems to debate following Paenitia for a moment before issuing a 'tk' and sucking air between his teeth, turning and heading the opposite direction instead with a shake of the head.

Dramatis Personae

Mercy <bre>Black and Sliver, or maybe Platinum? That's your first impression, from floppy brimmed and plumed hat to thigh high black boots. This white-blonde Aesir woman is dressed rather flamboyantly. Ice blue eyes can be piercing or laughing, depending on her mood, but they are surrounded by smile crinkles. Her outfit does little to hide her womanly curves, although she is short and slight for an Aesir. Hands have the callouses of both sword work and a sailing ship's ropes. She is armoured in a silver-washed chainmail shirt that descends to just above the tops of her black and white metal buckled thigh high boots. The shirt is covered by a black tabard in front and a black cap in the back. Both are centred with a dragon embroidered with white metallic thread. A light repeating crossbow crosses her back, a longsword graces her right hip, while daggers are sheathed in her boot tops and left hip.

Faranth
Faranth is a silver-scaled Sith-makar, with smiling wise eyes the color of the midnight sky flecked with gold. Like most Sith-makar she strikes an impressive and hard to ignore figure. She is easily 6 foot tall with a ridge crest that makes her seem even taller than that. Furthermore she is built broad with wide-spread shoulders, and full through the hips - big boned and proud of her stature. She keeps herself well-groomed, but most of the things she owns have a rustic, well-worn flavor to them that comes from their fine make and care which she gives them.

Thick furs woven together protect her torso leaving her arms and legs bare to show off her silver scales, and she has a long gray-furred cloak that hides some of her bulk and tail, to be used as a blanket should she need it. Her left arm has a large wooden shield strapped to it, and she is veritably armed to the teeth with various weapons. A scimitar hangs off of her belt, and she carries a quiver of spears as well as a quarterstaff. Feranth is a cautious sort, and thus is rarely seen without the above accutroments.

Jinks
Jinks carries himself with a sense of smug self-importance, wrapped in bright, tailored clothing that flatters his slight frame. The gnome is an average height for his people (standing closer to three-feet tall than four) but manages to look down his nose at even the tallest giantborn. He slinks with an easy grace through crowds forever endeavoring to avoid contact with the common man.

His eyes are large, solid black orbs twinkling with mischief and his thin lips are almost perpetually set into a lopsided smirk framed by an immaculately-trimmed goatee. The hair on his head is shock-white, shoulder-length, and worn pulled back into a short ponytail. He's also quite oviously fond of jewelry as assorted baubles and trinkets glitter about his face, top, and hands. This mul is built lithe and quick, body honed to be its own weapon. She doesn't stand too terribly tall, yet her stature doesn't help with how she squirrels herself away.

Aryia
Heavy scarring lines every inch of exposed dark colored flesh, that almost a dim grey. Her face shows youth, yet her milky eyes betray a hard life were her self not evidence enough. Moon colored hair comes down to just past her shoulders, it a damaged mess, yet straightened out. The entire front of her throat is a mass of scarring, deep wounds from long past.

Attire wise, she doesn't wear anything complicated. A simple, white cotton long sleeved and brown pants, coupled with some nice looking dark blue boots. Underneath the sleeves are leather cords that press against muscled arms. Small, cold iron plates adorn the back of her hands and knuckles, the palms and fingers exposed.

Seyardu
While not as physically imposing as many others of her kind, Seyardu still towers over most regardless. The sith-makar is covered in bright silver scales, with almost metallic, silvery eyes that are usually found in what looks like an appraising squint. Two long, ridged horns curve forward on their face, and a long tail trails slightly on the ground, keeping them balanced. Usually they are seen in town with simple, plain clothes, a simple vest and accompanying gray skirt. A large rucksack is usually slung over her back with most of her worldly posessions, with a large wooden shield, well used but completely bare, save for a rough dark black painting of a dragon's head.
