  • Title: Do it for Mei, part 1
  • Emitter: Zeke
  • Characters: Paenitia, Aryia, Seyardu, Shalethiste
  • Place: Farmlands of Alexandros
  • Time: Thursday, August 12, 2021, 2:08 PM
  • Summary: Seyardu, Smuldur and Aryia set out to the dungeon Mei described, stopping first to speak to Gregor Marshal. He directs them to the road, along which they see a body. A man, with red skin, covered in flies. Smuldur immediately runs over to offer aid, and is grabbed by the man and held hostage. He reveals himself to be a devil, and orders them to drop their weapons... when, most of them don't have them out. Smuldur remembers that in a hostage situation, shooting the host is important, so he attacks him with fire. As the man tries to pin Smuldur, he orders flesh-blob-minion things to attack. At this moment, Paenitia arrives on Ramirez, announces herself, issues her challenge, threatens to pin the demon to the ground and dismember him, and charges. She ride by, injuring him badly, but not as badly as she'd hoped. Aryia steps in, stunning the devil repeated, and Seyardu and Smuldur take to smashing the fleshy things. Paenitia realizes their fight might attract attention, and so minimizes her flashiness by riding in to melee and staying there. It seems the Devil is about to teleport, and Aryia is not about to let this happen and grabs him, while Pae and Rami give him a good wack and peck. Unexpectedly, Shalethiste arrives, latest to the party. She charges in to smite the devil, and with a tremendous swing decapitates him. His death was as the little knight promised, being pinned and cut to pieces. The group re-groups and decides to venture further, towards the tower-dungeon in the distance.

It's a hot day outside, and in spite of the bright blue sky it's not actually that pleasant a day to be traveling. It's the heat. It's /just/ hot enough to make everything miserable and you had to set out from the city in the early morning hours so you've been traveling for what feels like far too long in a day that's only gotten hotter and hotter with each passing moment. You're starting to wonder if this farm you're headed to was made up when the path before you suddenly splits off and there's Farmer Gregor Marshal's sprawling acres.

It's clear at first glance that Marshal's land is mostly meant for food rather than anything else. All the neat rows of vegetables and grasses growing tall now that it's almost time for the harvest to be brought in. The farmer himself greets you a bit warily, and seems eager to point you to the path that will lead you to where Mei's party was attacked. Or perhaps just eager to have a bunch of adventurers off his land. Either way he shows you the path and allows a moment for any questions you might have, but stands there a bit impatiently. As though he has better things to do.

Smuldur doesn't mind heat so much. His trusted ally Torchie makes fire AND heat, afterall, and fire is the best. Not to mention being useful for just about anything and everything (that's both fire and Torchie, of course). The lit stick over crops might be one more reason a farmer could want for people to move on, or Farmer Marshal could just be busy. Who knows?

Smuldur isn't here for vegetables, though. He's here for... the something or other they were looking for. He grins and nods at the farmer pointing out the path, gesturing to it himself with Torchie just in case others didn't notice it. "This way!"

"Once Seyardu was ready to go, it wasn't long after everyone had gathered that she was heading out. They continued for a while, but she didn't mind too much, their purpose too important for delays. They reach the farm, and she greets the farmer.

"Peace on your nest, I hope things have been safe for you recently. if there's anything you can tell us about the appearance of the building, please do not hesitate do so." She asks.

Aryia tagged along to help, her having no real stake in the matter, but having not much else to do. Besides, she wanted to take some time out of the city. Out of the... madness.

The mul'neissa was following behind with her hands in her pockets and a pair of tinted glasses resting over her eyes. As well as a hood to further block the heat and light out. She nods at Seyardu's notions.

The farmer looks very suspiciously at Smuldur, and more specifically the torch. Almost too distracted by its waving about to answer the question put to him. "The building? Oh right. It just appeared one day out of the blue. Big squat tower-looking thing. Looks like it goes pretty far underground. I could be wrong, but I've built a building or two in my day and it looks that way to me. Anyways. It's made of plain gray stone, but you can't miss it because it's in a nice little valley on the other side of that hill there." He points again to the hill that you'll have to climb and the little path on it. "It's near my well."

Aryia folds her arms together and nods. Seemed straightforward. She glances to the other two, as they had more information on the matter than her.

"So it came from nowhere, and likely goes down, but may have some aboveground levels." Seyardu nods. "Thank you for letting us know, and you are likely aware already, but if you see any injured people or strange ones around the area, do not approach them. They may be quite dangerous. I may suggest looking into building another well elsewhere." She suggests, looking in the direction pointed to.

"We will need to be careful ourselves."

"Careful!" Smuldur exclaims to confirm...or at least echo... as he scampers ahead along the path and up the rise to see what he can see. Stupid rises; they always get in the way of seeing. They should rid the world of them. Doors, too.

Unfortunately the hill is taller than it appears to be, and it takes some time to climb it. Once at the top though, you can see the 'tower' in the distance. It's not hard to make out against the sea of golden grains given that it is blue-gray stone in color. You head down the hill toward the valley, finding as the hill comes to an end that there is a man laying in the middle of the road. The man is still, and covered in blood. The scent of it has already started to attract flies.

Aryia walks up the hill with a bit of a huff, hands resting on her hips as she observes all before her. Her eyes fall on the body, and her head tilts to the side. "A dead one. They look... red. Too red,"" she gestures, finishing by pointing towards the corpse. <Handspeech>

Despite her genuine wishes to help, she heeds her own advice, and holds up a hand to those present. "Halt." She says firmly, squinting at the body. "That is not a human, most likely, I do not know any with tails. It could be a trap, or perhaps infighting amongst the fiends."

Careful. Smuldur was told they should be careful! Full of care! "There!" he points the torch as he spies the wounded (or dead?) big 'un and scampers to the fallen one to render care. Smuldur is care-full, so he has plenty to share! Like he was told! And if the big 'un is past care... well, who knows what shiny, nifty, and/or explosive things he might no longer need to hold onto!

<OOC> Zeke says, "Alrighty, Devil is going to try and grab Smuldur and hold him hostage. Because that's how devil do."
GAME: Zeke rolls 1d20+10: (12)+10: 22

As Smuldur runs up to the body to 'help' it, the 'corpse' leaps to its feet and grasps Smuldur round the throat. Holding him uncomfortably on his tip-toes lest he lose his ability to breathe. There's a long jagged weapon in the man's hand which had been hidden partially underground and partially under his body. Assuredly, the person most surprised by this development is Smuldur himself. "Drop your weapons, or the little guy gets a dose of metal."

Aryia glances back to Seyardu as she gives her warning, her nodding and seeing the wisdom in tha-

She holds a hand out towards the gobbo as they run off. "F-ck-g st-...!" she hisses out. To her surprise, and not really at the same time, Smuldur is scooped up into a hold.

Aryia has no weapons, though her face grows angry. She glances to Seyardu, seeing what her plan is.

<OOC> Smuldur will try to unhostagify himself?

"Not need metal!" Smuldur snaps angrily at the not-really-dead not-really-man. Being on his tiptoes makes Smuldur taller, too. More awesome! He starts thrashing and squirming, but proves to not be quite awesome enough to get loose.

"I said halt!" Seyardu growls, but it is too late, the goblin is already away, and now being held up by the 'corpse'. She sighs. "Do we have any weapons out?" Seyardu asks, squinting down at the creature holding the goblin. "You are the one immediately with the knife out, why would you act like this just to speak?" She continues. But she makes no move yet, save for nodding to Aryia.

Aryia sighs and flicks a quick, "Idiot," and settles onto her front foot. <Handpseech>

The demon lifts poor Smuldur off his feet and waves his somewhat free other hand in a circular motion. It's then that you realize that there is /something/ in the grass all around you. Something... Slithering. Sliding. Squelching. It sounds terrible, but is short enough that it can't be seen until one of them spills out onto the roadway behind you. It looks like a lump of flesh given life. It's disgusting. It almost seems to have humanoid features. Maybe a face? Maybe just fleshy boils that make it seem to have a face. Crawling half-formed limbs heave its mass forward and they stop all around you. Surrounding you. "I will tie this one up, to ensure your continued good behavior, and then we'll all go see what'll become of you like civilized beings." The devil grins.

The lumps of flesh stopped five feet outside of Seyardu's reach. The devil is about... Fifteen feet away, or so, perhaps a touch closer.

"And so you act." Seyardu sighs, shaking her head. She had expected as much, so she waited until after they moved to grasp her holy symbol. "Celestial mother, guide our purpose, and deliver your judgement upon our enemies." She offers in brief prayer, before she pulls out her cold iron mace, moving towards one of the creatures. "We will break through, and give the fiend the retribution it deserves."

Aryia's frame tenses as more things come out for them. She had to fight. She wasn't getting captured, no way, no how. And hearing the prayer flood through her was all that she needed to know. She rockets off, hopping over on of the small bits of moving flesh before bouncing up, tucking her feet in.

And crashes her feet into the broadside of their skull in Aryia's signature drop kick. She hits the ground and rolls to her feet, nodding to the freed Smuldur as she bounces on her feet. Cold Iron cestus at the ready.

Aryia was growing more pissed off at these kinds of creatures. And was ready to pulverize them into paste.

Someone slept late, then spent too long catching up with Farmer Marshall after getting directions.

It wasn't the hippogryph

An odd galloping cadence and a flurry of large white wings heralds the arrival of the peacock-andalusian, Ramirez, resplendent in mithril mail and crimson markings.

A very forceful, yet childlike, and loud voice heralds the arrival of halfling knight, absurdly bedecked in rusty red armour, a wide brimmed hat, a Smiling Man's mask and peacock-feather cloak.

It took only a moment for her to realize this was exactly the situation Mei warned about.

"I am Sister Paenitia del Haranna, Knight of the Pillar and Paladina of Tarien, and I have the counter-offer." She levels a lance directly at the demon's chest, "You will fight only me. This is Cold Iron. I will pin you to the ground while Ramirez tear you to pieces."

A brief pause to let the threat sink in, then she raises it, "His claws are not. It will be painful and slow. Prepare to Die!"

Her prescence announced, her challenge issued, the Red Knight spurs her Ivory Steed into a charge that bears down on the devil. She strikes him solidly in the chest, her time in the lists paying off, and carrying past. Ramirez snaps his beak to the side, but misses.

Trampling through the flesh things, her hippogryph catches some injuries from them. The wheel about, ready for another charge. Her strike, while solid, not as damaging as she believes it should be.

Smuldur has never been in a hostage situation before, so has no idea how to handle one. He does remember hearing something about one, once. A bard's tale. Something about runaway wagons and bombs. Lots of explosions! That's probably why he remembers it. "Shoot! Host-!" he starts to advise of his revelation in tactics when he's dropped. He blinks and spins around to bonk the not-dead not-man with Torchie. Maybe he's flammable. Well, everything is flammable. It's just a matter of enough fire.

Notibly the fire doesn't seem to bother the Devil at all. As the main Devil is stunned, his lackeys move in and attack! Two on each, except Pae who's outside their ring.

As she is wheeling and turning, something catches the little knight's eye. A tower in the distance, the 'dungeon' they're going to investigate. With winged creatures circling above.

If she can see them, they might see her, and a giant white peacock rushing all over the landscape is likely to be exactly the sort of thing that would draw attention. She exhales as Ramirez completes his turn and launches, "Only in the lists and practice my friend, can we fight like we should."

Louder, commanding both her mount and the others, Paenitia says, "Ramirez! Stand to fight the blobs after I strike. Smuldur, fire them too. Aryia, stay with me on the red man, we shall see who is redder at the end."

"Seyardu, be ware and watch us, we are injured already."

A long speech, but short enough to complete during her charge. She spears the devil with her lance, once more it bounces more than buries itself.

Ramirez slides to a stop and snaps at one of the... mewling critters. Cutting it up.

The smaller fleshy creatures continue to advance at their master's mental command. The devil's blows rain down on her. Paenitia smiles, then grimaces from the impacts. Her armour protects her, her mask hides all her expressions. She is a little lump of metal, with a huge grin. It may not unsettle a devil, but in her heart she hopes... it just might. Her taunt, her attacks, have pulled him off her friends. This is good. She keeps it up.

"What is your name, serr? So I know who I kill. If you make the decent struggle, you might live on as one of my titles. Better than you die nameless in the dust."

Think about that. She stabs, her lance drawing a solid line, but a thin one. He is nearly impenetrable too.

Ramirez has more luck, 'RAAAWWWK!' He snaps at something, blobbish, between his talons, beak closing like an inexorable pincer.

Which kills it. The being explodes like a blob of pizza-puss. Everywhere, chunks. It's DISGUSTING!

Running somewhat behind for reasons of little direct import while the show's underway, a small figure trailing flowing copper sees the battle with familiar figures underway and charges. As she closes the distance, she twists the hilt at her waist and draws her narrow longblade from the sheath at a diagonal, a zealot's light in her eye.

There is an arc of reflected light along the blued steel as it slips through the devilish lump that showers the area about her like pressurized chunky salsa.

Shelly, outright caked in gore, turns to consider where to next apply her blade.

Here comes the cavalry!

The Devil seems like he is going to teleport himself, and the lesser devils will continue to mindlessly attack.

The devil is interrupted, the lesser flesh creatures rolled around ineffectively.

Seyardu, filled with divine strength and less than divine wrath at the fiends, takes the mace in both hands as she charges the nearest creature. She brings it down on the mass, crushing it nearly to the ground before it bursts.

Blood soaked, she turns to the devil and snorts blood out of her nostrils, squinting till her eyes were nearly slits. "Let us see what becomes of you due to us civilized beings, hellspawn." She growls.

No. NOT. AGAIN. Aryia snarls and decks the devil in the face as they try to teleport away. The elf lunges their body at them and wraps a limb up in her grip, whipping them around to keep them off kilter and from trying that again.

Shalethiste could see a familiar looking mul'neissa. The last time they spoke, she was afraid, unsure of herself, and lost. And now here she was with a snarl on her face, wrangling a devil with her bare hands and fury in her eyes.

The Red Knight is watching the red devil. He hasn't given her the pleasure of his name. She notices a certain glazed look cross his eyes. She calls out, "He cast! Attack." She swipes with her lance, the impromptu attack hits, disrupting his concentration.

This gives her a moment to re-centre, attempt her real attack. A solid stab, which completely misses. Seeing what Aryia is attempting, she changes her mount's orders.

"Ramirez! Grab and hold, help our small friend."

'Ruaaaaah?' Ramirez squawks. He's concerned about the blood on his feathers, the blood in his face. The flooppy blobs of flesh things that keep bursting all around.

Grabbing at the devil's legs with his talons seems a reasonable alternative. The hippogryph does so.

GAME: Smuldur rolls melee+2+1+1: (2)+7+2+1+1: 13

The not-dead demon said they'd bleed. Smuldur is doing a bit of that... maybe alot. He laughs. "Ha! Still have more blood!" He does, probably, though might be starting to run a little low. One gobber can only hold 27 gallons or so, afterall. It might be wooziness that makes his torch swing wide. Or the laughing. Or because it's a torch.

Seeing troubled Aryia struggling with the devil so full of surety and fire, as well as the Smiling Knight and her feathery steed, the Silver Guard moves to act with decisiveness.

Nimbly sidestepping an errant swing from a lesser creature who'd thought to take advantage of her redirected focus, the Mul'niessa's eyes narrow, irises taking on the glow of the hunter's moon as she declares, "Vile creature, I smite thee in Eluna's name!" in a smooth, simmer of righteous contempt threading through her almost serene touch of the divine. There is another flash, an arc of that same light that lingers in the air after her stroke passes neatly through the outsider's throat like mist to create a fountain of unnatural ichor.

She wipes at her face with one hand as the other flicks the blood from her blade and she, "Begone, and trouble the realm of mortals no longer." <Sildanyari>

She takes a breath, then, "Are you alright?"

Paenitia simply stares, her grin beneath her mask almost as wide as the grin upon it. It is a very stretched and stylized smile. Her eyes were locked, in as much as she could have them, on the devils.

She promised him he would die, pinned to the ground. She promised him, he would be ripped apart. One thought foremost in her mind, if he had any lingering whisps of telepathy he could read it as bright as the sun. Or perhaps, the moon. 'This is how I said you'd die'.

Now, he is dead. In pieces. A warm feeling splashed on her and her allies, a warmer one inside. A win.

"'Ware the blobs, the fight is not done," Paenitia says, but they too appear to have stopped moving. Straightening up, she dips her head towards Shalethiste, and her last second, saving swing, "Much thanks my friend, I am glad to have you as my ally. That was the mighty blow."

Aryia's eyes widen at the approaching mul'neissa, her silently gasping and shoving the fiend into the paladin's righteous smite. The tip of the blade makes her eyes cross, her dropping the spraying corpse staggering back with a few wet slaps on the ground.

She shakes her head, getting past the daze of a shaking hit. Aryia looks down. Her cotton shirt and pants were completely drenched in the blackish red blood of the devil, it dripping on the ground with a slight sizzle. Her face turns a touch green, and she spits out a glob of the guck.

"Fine, thank you," she gestures to the other mul'neissa with a nod, a slight bit of relief at the sight of them. <Handspeech>

Sandy was going to be so pissed when she got back.

Before Seyardu could move further, her gaze was taken by the arc of light, and the spray of blood. She snorts more blood out of her face, glancing at the nearby blobs that seem to have ceased.

"Peace on your nest, and my thanks for the assistance." She says to Shalethiste. "A fitting end for a creature who would prey upon the empathy and mercy of travellers."

Slowly but surely the bodies of the devils are burning down to ash and smoke. Nothing will be left of them in a few hours hence save the blood and gore that lingers here. There's nothing here but you now, and the insects which are quickly becoming more and more interested in your presence.

Shalethiste takes a couple of breaths, surveying her colleagues again and smiles in some small bemusement to her countryman, "I'm sorry about the mess, I'll gladly replace those when we get back to the city."

She doesn't seem to fully grasp the silent woman's gestures, and she does make a point of overtly checking her over for obvious wounds and looks over to the mounds as Paenitia mentions them, "Thank you, Sister. We should see to them." She answers Seyardu's greeting with, "Peace upon your nest as well, you speak the truth of it."

"Hola my friends, much apology for being late. I speak too long with the farmer." Paenitia greets everyone, now that she is able. Her eyes scan the nearby road, and the body, and the insects. "I see the devil has all the guile Mei warn us about."

She points in the down the road, "When I turn Ramirez, I see the dungeon we seek. It small but within sight. There were flying things above."

"They may have notice us, they may arrive. My white bird-horse or the silver flash." She's checking the skies in the indicated direction, then scans over the group, "do you have the ranged weapons, in case they fly and will not touch the ground?"

"If anyone needs healing, I will help as I am able." Seyardu offers, glancing to those present. "And yes, it seems they will attempt what they did again. For what purpose, it is unclear."

She listens to Paenitia, and nods. "It is alright, you were here when it mattered, which is what is important. Please be more careful in the future though, Smuldur. Mei did speak of 3 creatures, winged, yes? But there was only one here, without wings, though his account may not be perfect. But we should be prepared for others, I believe."

Aryia seemed to sport a few cuts on her legs from the clawing limbs, but otherwise looked fine, just coming down off of being a bit frantic from going toe to toe with a devil. Seeing that her words weren't understood, she just gives a thumbs up to Shalethiste and a faint smile. It was good to see her again.

Aryia turns towards Paenitia after spitting on the melting body, and she shakes her head. Aryia had no such armaments. The only thing she throws is hands.

Together the group turns resolute toward the tower-dungeon, determined to clear the devils that now call this place home out. Tiny bodies circle the building, a warning to all that come this way. Like vultures, but these are not shaped like any vulture you have ever seen. You'll have to draw closer to get a good look to them, and that... you will.
