The Scene Begins

The five (six) of you take passage on the rickety freight airship, The Airmule, for a red eye flight at midnight. It's not a particularly comfortable flight, but there is plenty of sleep aids (Grain alchol) to help you get to sleep. You awaken to the sounds of the water intake hoses being lowered and the steam pumps engaging. You go above deck to look upon the sleepy hamlet of Ridgerest. Or it was before the expedition was announced. It is now a boomtown of merchants, conmen, cutthroats, peddlers, prostitutes, priests, and all other sourts of service providers. As you soon as your feet leave the loading basket, you are assailed with offers of high quality, low cost goods such as torches, lamp oil, potions of wound mending, half price Alexandros Steamers at Rusty's pleasure tent, blessings for Kor, Tarien, Angoran, and least deities you are sure they are made up, bonafide treasure maps won from esteemed adventurers in treasure games, shell games, hot meat pie breakfasts, and so on.

After engaging or ignoring the various peddlers and purveyors, you eventually hire a teamster to take you to the dig site, which consists of a massive tent city reminiscent of an army camp sprung up from a simple farmer's fields between two valleys. You are accosted once more by more peddlers, this time of a different sorts. Hirelings, porters, torchbearers, shield carriers, wound sewers, translators, and so on. You finally pick a slim man in his early thirties, head shaved bald. He doesn't look like any real warrior, but his fingers are well calloused and he carries a light crossbow and wears a set of studded leather. He seems eager enough and introduces himself as Dante Velstone.

The group of 6 (7) now ready yourselves and enter the main tent, which houses the shored up and magically buttressed 14ft diameter sinkhole, over which straddles a massive tripod of oak beams reinforced with steel plate. Dangling by a thick rope is a 8ft diameter basket, the rope strung across to a steam engine that runs the water pumps and the winch that lowers and raises the basket. Eyeing the lot of you, the beefy mechanic spits out his toothpick and drawls, "Lotta folks this time 'round. Thing only take 800 lbs 'fore we worry about it snappin. Your giant wolf there go'an be a trip on it's own, rest of you gonna figure out how you wanna go down. Had some mud shovelers down there yesterday, kobolds took a couple potshots at 'em 'fore running off, so I guess they all riled up n' ornery."

"They causin' ya trouble, then? Might look into stoppin' that, then." Garth asides to the basket operator. He's a veteran, albeit he came out a little crispy from the last time. "C'mon, then, folks, let's get movin'." he tells the party, gesturing. Seems he's going first. "Stay up so ya can tell, um... him... to get on board and get him settled." he tells Ylva. "Arissa, Dante, with me, if ya would." Not because he loves Dante any more than the others - just to have him close by.

Before heading down, Ylva takes the time to unload the chain armour and saddlebags from Ulfr, lightening the load for the basket. "Ulfr, be good. Don't jump around in there or it might break," she tells her fuzzy companion. The grubby ranger rolls up the armour and gear and holds it herself, to put back on the wolf once they reach the bottom. Seeing a few faces she doesn't recognise, Ylva scrutinises them, eyeing them like a wary animal. Once it's clear they are to go down with her, she eases and offers, "I am Ylva, daughter of wolves. This is Ulfr." Ulfr bows his head to look nonthreatening. It's hard for a wolf that size to look nonthreatening.

Arissa proved to be pretty easy to travel with; aside from checking up on Garth during the initial parts (curious about the tending of a recent, hopefully now healed away, hook wound) and loaning Ylva a wand on the basis that "You appear to have no small connection to nature," she otherwise kept very quiet and kept to herself. Similarly, the barrage of 'advertising' when they arrive does little to affect her. Instead, the first major discourse she has to offer on-site is at the mention of figuring out how they wish to descend into the dig area. Arissa specifically steps to stand beside Garth and comments: "I would go with--" She cuts off; he had the same idea. Arissa thus nods, standing ready to descend with him and Dante.

Dante gulps and nods. "I suppose this is what I'm getting paid the big money for." He loads his crossbow and sparks up an artifice mana lamp, which he clips to his belt. He clambers into the belt without too much trouble and makes sure his kit is all secured, smiling nervously at Arissa and Garthos as the descent begins.

"Koe-bolds.." Halani tilts her head to the side a little bit. She's not particularly cheerful; the airship ride was a far, far cry from the relatively dry trip she had to Alexandria. And trying out that 'sleep aid' was a mistake, to be sure. "Are they little?" She looks doubtfully at the wagon, then tries to get some sort of peering over the buttresses into the sinkhole. "They live down there?"

"Ya just stay well back if there's trouble. We'll do our best to keep ya safe. If you're a decent shot with that crossbow, feel free to help out - just don't do anythin' stupid like runnin' off from us or pokin' at things without checkin' for traps." Garth asides to Dante as they travel into the bowels of the ancient dwarven citadel. "The gnome I was here with last said the kobolds were nasty buggers that way, set lots of traps. Didn't run into any, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time. Ya said ya got a way with such things, yeah?" he asks the man.

"Kobolds are little lizard people," Ylva explains, "They are this high and can be lots of different colours but most are grey or brown. They are not dragons," she states, as if she thinks this is something most people don't know about the wee reptillians. Ulfr sniffs around the party and makes huffing sounds. Ylva translates, "Ulfr is making friends with you. He is learning your smells. If you get lost, he will find you."

GAME: Arissa casts Light.

Arissa joins Garth's cautions to Dante, offering a soft smile. "He is right. Really we do not see you as expendible; all of us must share in this success. Hopefully you will come to no injury, but if you are you must come to me and I will see your body mended. You will do that, right?" Then she faces Garth, chanting in soft Celestial and placing a hand on one of his gauntlets; it begins glowing. Then she looks to Ylva and the large wolf... apparently taking this explanation fairly well and making a curtsy to the pair, before stepping into the basket-lift to descend... perhaps unaware of what awaits mere moments away.

Dante nods, "I've had to disarm a few lockboxes that were trapped that some adventuring types like you brought to our shop. I don't know anything about magical traps, though." He says quietly, eyes wide, knuckles white as he grips his crossbow like a security blanket, especially when Ulfr comes near.

The descent into the cave is pretty smooth. You go down through 30 feet of magically smoothed and hardened limestone with small mana lamps attached to the walls. After that, the view is spectactular....A massive 120 feet wide circular room with a domed ceiling, every inch covered in magnificent frescoes depicting ancient Pre-Sudnering dwarven Thanes and Heroes locked in epic battle. Then everything gets dark. The christmas-tree light set up of mana lamps suddenly go dark before you get 10 feet down, and squeal of kobold-accented draconic pierces the darkness.

"Oh no." whispers the locksmith.

No surprise round.
Round 1
Ylva delays.

Ylva hears the squeal and grips her bow. "Ulfr, wait here. I don't want you getting in a fight without your armour on." She moves toward the shaft and peers down, waiting for a chance to do something. Ulfr looks disappointed and sits down.

A trio of bolts come flying out of the darkness, one from the upper right side of the chamber, two from the lower side. They all find their mark in the flesh of the basket-riders, shallow as the wounds may be. The noise. The sound garthos has found so familiar. The sound of breaking ceramic and the fwoosh of flames. Only it seems to be under you and much brigher, bigger, and louder. Peering over the edge, with the newfound light, the trio can see a bonfire of broken furniture and some brown/grey carpeting? has been ingiting, sending thick waves of peculiar smelling grey-blue smoke up the tunnel. On the plus side, it bathes the chamber in a hellish glow.

Dante fires at a kobold.

"AUGH. I'M HIT!" The locksmith cries. He leans over the side just a bit, the wobble of 3 folks getting shot at throwing off his aim. His bolt clatters against the floor and snaps, and he slumps down, "Reos protect me!"

Garthos throws a javelin at a kobold.

"Fuck." Garth is so eloquent. So very eloquent. He pulls one of the javelins from his back, taking aim over the railing at the nearest of the disgusting little lizard-men. He throws the weapon, and with a squeak, the creature is impaled upon it fully, remaining upright upon it like some totem to a forgotten, kobold-loathing god. "Round two, ya ugly vermin." he says, snarling.

GAME: Arissa casts Summon Monster II.

Arissa winces as an arrow glances her; she has many of the same concerns Dante does, and kneels beneath the basket edge. "Stay down! They mean to assail us with arrows and flames, but they have forgotten that fire has its opposites and I shall have it extinguished in moments!" Thus, surrounded by the basket, she begins softly sing-chanting in Celestial... a glowing white circle forms nearby, arcane runes swirling within it...

Halani delays.

Halani tries to form a mental image of these kobold beasties from the descriptions offered by Ylva and Kanyk... which probably don't do the creatures justice. Meanwhile she waits her turn on the basket, occasionally eyeing Ulfr, wondering if she ought to pet him... wondering if he'd eat her hand if she tried. And then the yipping starts. Once again she tries to peer over the edge... "I can't see anything!" At least, until the fire starts. And then she sees a big orange glow. "What's going on down there?" she yells.

"Kobold ambush!" Garth calls back to Halani. That outta clear things up.

Kanyk attempts to glide down the shaft.

Kanyk nearly has a... mishap while trying to maneuver around the basket. He almost slams into it, but catches himself, and before his weight can offset the basket, he is off of it again, and is once more gliding downwards in a counter-clockwise corkscrew. He slowly comes to a stop, landing on the floor beneath the basket. He looks quickly to the fire, and then over in the direction of one of the kobolds. He draws a shuriken and chucks it at the reptilian, but in his haste, the shuriken is thrown very sloppy-like, and it sails wide, impaling into an armoire.

Ylva peers at the hole. Ulfr sits next to her and peers down. "I will go, Ulfr. You stay here and we will get you soon." The wolf whimpers and lies down, hanging his big head over the edge. The ranger secures her gear and leaps onto the rope, sliding down with excellent speed (and thankfully wearing sturdy gloves) and leaps down into the basket. It creaks and wobbles but the thing holds. "Ow. I think I landed on my keys."

The remaining trio of kobolds turn their weapons on the egalarin monk. One bolt bound for the throat of Kanyk is slapped out of the air inches before impact, while the other two fly wide, shattered on the walls. Meanwhile, the basket continues to lower, bathed in thick grey-blue smoke. Things start getting fuuuuuuzzzy, but everybody seems to be holding it together for the most part. "I AM FREAKING OUT." Dante shrieks, loading his crossbow as he hunkers down in the basket.

Arissa completes the summoning spell.
GAME: Arissa casts Bless.

Arissa continues chanting and gesturing for several seconds, with two effects in quick succession. First, a swirling mass of vaguely cohesive water, with something similar to a face, appears. It's about half as tall as a human, and falling into the flames... extinguishing them outright! A second or two later, an 'explosion' of gold-white light engulfs everyone even remotely close to Arissa; they feel a rush of righteous courage as the light fades, and Arissa remains kneeling within the basket, smiling... though whether it is from the fumes, her magic, or both may not be immediately obvious.

"Oh... gods. Woozy. Plug your nose and hold your breath!" Garth advises, and then starts doing EXACTLY that. He unshoulders his bow in one swift motion, nocking and letting loose an arrow towards one of the barricades. It impacts solidly into the kobold, sending the creature sprawling.

The Egalrin Monk moves fluidly, leaping up onto an end table to get the high ground on the nearest kobold. With a sharp, jabbing snap of a kick, the talons on his right leg embed themself into the face of the kobold. Kanyk then nimbly jerks his his foot forward and to the right, snapping the neck of the little Draconic being. He pulls his foot back and then turns to get a bearing for where the other Kobold is, keeping his posture defensive so he may avoid another ranged attack.

Halani watches Ylva shimmy down the rope to join the others, and almost jumps to do the same... but then she remembers what the crazy looking elevator operator said. And that he was crazy looking. (to her.) She eyes him even now... and then eyes the rope again. And then smoke starts drifting upwards in plumes. "Uh. I think.. Hey! Everything going good down there?"

"Hup." Ylva gets up and draws her bow and fires off a shot, piercing the last kobold. "Is that all of them?" She coughs and shakes her head, buzzing oddly at the effect of the smoke. "Bleugh. Blah. We need to put out those fires."

Combat Ends

Dante's eyes widen when Garthos barks his orders at him. Then he raises his crossbow and shoots the warrior square in the back. "YOUR THE DEVIL. GIVE ME MY PENIS BACK!" He shrieks, cowering in the bottom of the basket.

Arissa is puzzled as Dante aims at... who? Who does he see that she doesn't, with all the kobolds defeated? Then she sees where he is aiming, and protests: "You mustn't! Stop!" He fires at Garth, and she goes wide-eyed. "He is a good man! Stop this!" Dismayed, she tries to tackle Dante, hold him down, and otherwise keep him busy from crossbowing those around him...

So Garth has a bolt in his back. Fun times. He rounds on the other man. "The hell are ya doin'?!" he barks, dropping his bow to the bottom of the basket momentarily and descending on the unfortunate pipsqueak of a man, grabbing him by the wrists so he can't hurt himself or others in his bout of the crazies.

Halani, still up top, can't see anything for all the smoke. Despite the fire being out. Maybe especially because, since the major light it provided is gone now. The noise has more or less stopped.. no more yipping.. but there are still sounds of struggle. "Hey? Guys?" She looks over at Ulfr, the back down the hole again. "HEY WHAT'S GOING ON!"

Ulfr looks back at Halani and makes as near to a shrug as a wolf can.

"Our new friend's gone nutty in the head!" Garth calls up. "Just... give us a second here for him to stop tryin' to kick me in the crotch and we'll send the basket back up!" He is indeed a little preoccupied dodging cheap shots from a raving lunatic right now.

Kanyk looks around, quietly, trying to get an idea of his surroundings. He moves down from the endtable, trying to carefully maneuver around all the sharp objects on the floor. He starts to look around for a door, or a way out. Or forward.

Eventually, Dante calms down, though his pupils stay sort of dilated and weird looking. "Uh...sorry." He mutters, head hung down, "If you want me to go back up, I will." The locksmith says, looking all hang-dog.

Regardless, it's a simple fix to put the wires back together to get the mana lamps relit, and once the unburned piles of fungus and mold and kindling are shoved out of the way with a couple of the abandoned shovels, Ulfr and Halani can make their way down.

Now that you all have time to take a good look without tripping balls or getting shot by kobolds. you can see the large domed chamber, with a bronzed iron door to the far right, a tunnel 20ft wide by 10ft tall in the opposing wall, and two doors set 80 feet apart with chalk markings (See the logbook), each 10ft wide. Opposite from that is a set of massive stone doors 12' tall, 10' wide, flung wide open.

Once Ulfr is at the bottom, Ylva starts the work of getting him equipped in armour and gear again. "Stop wiggling, Ulfr. It will take a minute." Eventually, the wolf is ready to go, saddlebags on his flanks empty and awaiting piles of sweet loot. Ylva turns to the others, bow in hand. "Which way?"

"Don't worry 'bout that." Garth says to the crazyman, apparently willing to forgive being shot in the back. Again. "Be plenty of work for ya. I'm pissed at these beasties, now. I'm thinkin' we go in there and clean 'em out. What say ya?" he asks of the rest of the group. A nod points out the two doors that share one side of the chamber, the chalk markings on them.

Once Halani is at the bottom, she takes a look around at... the mess. The corpses. The abused furniture. "Well good gosh. Looks like you guys had some excitement and EW! Is that what a kobold looks like? And people think they're dragons? Are people dumb?"

Arissa backs off as Garth takes over subduing Dante; he's likely far more suited to it. Instead, she begins tending to those hurt in the ambush; gold-white divine fire from her hands handles some of it, a healing wand takes care of the rest. The fire washing over Dante does as she usually promises it will; it doesn't hurt him, but instead fades away after only a briefest moment of a wonderful, righteous feeling in his body. "Ahh... that is no matter," Arissa assures him. "If you are significantly harmed during our time together, you must tell me and I will tend to you in other ways." She taps the wand she just used, giving Dante a soft smile and nod... conciliatory rather than being upset at what the fire has just revealed about his heart.

GAME: Kanyk rolls perception: (19)+11: 30

With his keen senses, the Egalrin notices something out of the corner of his eyes. He steps a little closer, looking at it carefully, but not getting too close to it. He doesn't know for sure -what- it is, but given that he smells the foul stench of fecal matter, and it appears to be within a chamberpot. "I... do not know what this is. Perhaps it is some sort of foul trap, or what have you?" He pauses, continuing to look at it. He takes a careful step back.

Dante blanches at the sight of kobold poop smeared crossbow bolts and pours the contents of his hip flask on his punctured shoulder with a wince. "Now I see why everybody hates them."

"Yep. We'll have the healers up top check us out later, help us not go down with anythin' nasty." Garth says to Dante, nodding. "See these things?" he says, as he picks up one of the little clay cylinders. "Alchemist's fire. They pack a lot of it. Best watch out. And keep an eye out for traps." And then he goes to gather more of the little grenades - and the tails of the kobolds, too.

Arissa's own reaction to Dante's is similar, if calmer. "Wretched indeed... we must be careful from here on. Clearly they are ready for us and mean to have us tested and exhausted by so many obstacles as we pursue them."

Ulfr ends up near Garthos and snuffles around by him, poking his nose at the kobold tails. Ulfr lies down and looks up at the warrior, making the biggest puppy eyes he can manage.

"Nooo, this is for money." Garth says to Ulfr. As if the animal would understand. He does reach out, fearlessly, to give the wolf a pat on the head. "Tell ya what, though. We'll use some of that money to get ya a hell of a steak when we're out." A glance towards the doors he indicated, a glance at the party. "That's where their warren is. We could go try clear 'em out, claim bounties, and do the world and our employers a favor... or we could lock 'em in there somehow and take an unexplored path." he explains.

Arissa looks up in surprise at Garth's plan. "I thought you were speaking well until you suggested imprisoning them to starve, in effect. Surely you did not mean it that way but I would not see us do that regardless. If we wish to take to the kobolds and end their threat, really it would be best if we do so directly?"

Halani turns her eyes away from Garthos's gruesome task... as ugly as the kobolds are, she doesn't find the idea of cutting their tails off appealing. Or maybe it's the thought of touching them. "So. Where to, oh fearless in charge person? Onward into the den of slimy lizardness?"

"I will go wherever the rest of you desire to, so long as I can be of some assistance." The Egalrin monk speaks firmly, folding his arms over his chest as he approaches the rest of the party. His head darts this way and that, keeping a guage on their surroundings, eyes afire with attentiveness.

Dante has found himself in his element, more than running point as a tunnel rat. He kneels in front of the bronzed sliding door, eyeing the lock to the right of it. "This looks like it runs deeper into the citadel. It says dwarfhome here. No visitors beyond this point." He says, pointing out the dwarven script engraved in the black door. "And I'm pretty sure I can pick this."

Ulfr brightens up when Garth speaks of buying steaks. This wolf understands more than your average animal, even if he's still a simple creature. He accepts this idea and goes back to bother Ylva and get her moving with the group. The ranger wanders up near Dante to watch him and the door.

"It's a nice thought. Kinda sinful, but nice." Garth asides to Arissa. "After being shot by a salted bolt, a shit-covered bolt that'll probably give me some kinda fuckin' illness, a ton of normal bolts, and having fire thrown in my face? I'm not inclined to be especially merciful to these things. We tried to talk to 'em, ya realize? They laughed." the man explains to the sorceress - and the others. "They pinned us down with crossbow fire, too. Jinks, Colrick, Kilroy and I shed a lot of blood to rid the world of just nine of them. Maybe we should set aside some gold for 'em after. They deserve it, and we didn't find much else." he suggests. "C'mon, locksmith. We're gonna go dance with more lizards."

Dante sighs softly and looks fearfully at the giant wolf staring at him. "Uh...Ylva. Your wolf is staring at me!" He says, picking up his kit and skirting around to the other doors, never turning his back on the beast.

"Well. Jinks, Colrick and I did. Kilroy more... oozed some oil or somethin'." Garth corrects himself.

Arissa demures as Garth vents a pretty impressive list of reasons for his hatred, looking aside. "Really that is so? If they would fight like this and not even humor the thought of negotiation, then they are wretches and your anger makes sense... yet I imagine you would be so much more satisfied in putting them to the sword, if vengeance is what you seek. I am not against helping you." She nods to the door Dante has indicated, standing a little more tense now.

"Be good, Ulfr!" says Ylva, calling the wolf to her side so not to bother Dante while he works. "You are not a little pup anymore. You are still cute but people are afraid of that much cute in one place."

Dante takes several deep breaths, then pulls out a long slim piece of metal to slide along the seams of the door to check for trip wires and the like in case the door is trapped. He takes several minutes, and nods, wiping the sweat from his brow. "I don't think they trapped this one. At least nothing that I can see." He stands up and pushes the pivoting door open, and immediately from the darkness comes two crossbow bolts. Damn they love doing that.

"Relax. Well. Much as you can with a bolt in your side, anyway." Garth says, ALSO pulling a bolt out of his side. "Now, then. She smiles, blasting Garth with the same gold-white fires she used on herself... and as before, the flames turn into sparkles of healing energy that work with Ylva's more conventional efforts to clean and seal the wounds. "They may wish to tempt us with revenge, preying on your anger to pursue them. Who knows how many times they can repeat this tactic? We cannot move quickly unless we abandon caution, and that also plays into their desires. It may be best to move to their leader, as you say."

Halani's expression is positively forlorn. "So. These things are nasty," she says, after it's clear no one is doing to die... at least immediately... following the latest surprise the kobolds have sprung on them. "They trap their home like crazy. There is no response, but he does hold up his mana lamp to reveal a trip wire strung across the barricaded furniture, just as you turn the corner and start your way in. "I can try and cut the wire. Or just tug on it with a stick while around the corner. I don't know what it does though."

Kanyk keeps his form low, and his hands brought up in front of him in a defensive posture... remaining alert so that he may not fall prey to a surprise missile attack. His footsteps are noiseless as all his weight is transferred evenly. He looks around, keeping his eyes forward.

Ylva shoots the trip-wire.
GAME: Ylva rolls weapon1+5: (11)+16+5: 32

When everyone is ready, Ylva backs up and takes aim. Steadily, she lines up the arrow precisely, accounting for distance and the air density in the corridor and all of that stuff she wouldn't have a clue about if you asked her. She just does what feels natural and twang! The arrow strikes and severs the cord.

An arrowed quickly launched from around the corner digs into some bizarre contraption at the back wall, but reveals no kobold warriors waiting to attack. Plenty of signs of battle. Puddles of dried blood, scorched stone walls/floors/ceiling around broken chunks of blackened pottery. Shattered arrow shafts. Shit apparently went down here. "Fuck me running, what happened here?" Dante asks, poking his head aroudn the corner to have a gander.

The contraption looks like a table that has 4 crossbows bolted to it, cocked and ready to fire down the hallway. Guess that solves the mystery of what the tripwire did.

"Had a scuffle with a bunch of kobolds. They opened up on us from over at the end of the corridor while we were trippin' over this furniture. Couldn't see 'em. Hurt us somethin' awful." Garth explains. "Killed them all, though, in the end, but it drained us all so much we had to retreat to the camp." he adds. "Nasty little buggers. Hopefully we find enough valuables to leave a little somethin' on the side for my companions there. They did Angoron proud that day." He follows along with Dante. "Good eye, by the way. Glad we brought ya. Keep up the good work." he tells the wiry, panic-prone man.

As Ylva and Dante creep forward, checking over the ground and boxes for more tripwires, they sadly don't catch the pressure plate hidden under an upside table. One that knocks a large chunk of rock off into a box that contains a bellows stuffed full of alchemist's fire. The pair are sprayed with the substance and Dante screams, trashing around in the wreckage as he burns.

Ylva screams and leaps backward, catching only part of the burning spray. She didn't get the full brunt of it and her long experience in being covered in burning stuff helps her tough out much of the pain. But it's not a nice pain regardless. "Aaaah! Ah. Ow." She coughs.

Arissa rushes forward as the advance team is set aflame, bringing a wand in hand and pressing it to Dante's body. "Be still, please!" That may be hard to obey. Nonetheless, she pours her thoughts into the wand, urging it to obey her... and it lights up with its tip turning gold, dousing the fires and mending his body...

"Shit. I knew we're eventually gonna run into some bullcrap like this." Garth says, helping poor Dante to his feet as Arissa goes about poking the man with her little magic-stick. "She'll patch ya up, don't worry." he tells the man, nodding Arissa-wards.

Dante shudders as he gets a one-two punch of HOT FLAMING DEATH and SOOTHING COOLING HEALING in the space of 10 seconds. He practically peels off layers of dead, insta-scabbed skin, like the sunburn peeling from hell. "How the fuck do you people do this for a living?" He asks incredulously.

Garth can't help but laugh at that, patting the man on the shoulder. "Ya get used to it. Kind of like those people that let snakes bite 'em to get immune to the poison." he jokes, winking. "We've lizards to take our frustration out on if we make it through all their stupid traps. Let's keep movin'."

Arissa smiles softly, having a serious answer ready for Dante's... likely angry, rhetorical question. "My contract with the heavens demands I do precisely this. To use the powers they have shared with me, to protect others and bring joy to them, and defeat those who will not leave peaceful people be." Then she nods sharply to Garth, "I am ready to move as you are. If you believe we are nearing some danger, tell me and I may share blessings with all of you once more."

The locksmith takes his sweet ass time, inching forward the last ten feet over the course of 5 minutes before breaking free of the barricades. The slow creep finally speeds up a little bit as paranoia (if you can call it that) settles down a little bit. No more traps, though another table with crossbow bolts has been set up on the other side of the table. Dante goes to unload those, just in case.

The double wooden doors bear draconic writing, and below that is a picture of a kobold wearing a crown pointing his finger at people and them exploding. "I don't like that looks of that." Dante mumbles. "Err..Maybe I should stay back here, make sure those other kobolds don't uh...flank us or something."

Halani had been thinking exactly what Dante so eloquently put, though she keeps that bit to herself. Instead, she just sort of boggles, somewhat wide-eyed, at all the surprises that have been left for them. "I guess they really don't like visitors," she surmises. She keeps following along, though.. contributing at least her eyes to the mission.

Ylva dusts herself off. "I was fighting orcs once, up on a big wall with wood and stuff. I climbed up and they poured boiling oil on me," she says, tensing a little at the memory. "I almost died. Then I got set on fire and almost died again. Someone healed me and when I got back up I was hit by an axe and almost died EVEN MORE. I had a long bath in some alchemy stuff after that to make sure I didn't scar up into an immobile lump. It even got rid of my old marks from my rough life in the wild!" She does look rather fresh-faced (under the grime) for a seasoned savage.

Halani eventually takes her eyes off of the shadows around them to actually look at the door. And the script. And then she really boggles. "Really?" she wonders aloud, then inches her way around to get a closer look. "... Well. This is King Greelak's throne room." As if the picture didn't sum it up.

"Make sure that door's safe and let's give the 'King' a visit." Garth suggests, stepping back so that the door can be inspected for explodeys. He doesn't like those, see? A glance at Dante. "Ya can stay here if ya like. We'll call ya in when it's safe." he says. He seems fine with having the man not contribute to the fight.

Dante takes his time checking out the large double doors, pulling out all sorts of probes and instruments. "It's not wired or anything. Might be a magic trap on it, but I don't know anything about them." He packs his gear up and scurries to the intersection in the hall, setting up his own fort of barricades in case kobolds come attacking from the other direction.

Ylva takes 20, with Dante aiding another: 34

With Dante's help, Ylva works on searching the door, the floor beneath it and the walls for traps. Her gear is much more secure than a certain red-headed rogue's, so despite the very thorough activity of examining the area, nothing goes awry. "There's nothing here," she states confidently.

Ylva pipes up when the party stops to prepare themselves. She looks around the group. "I can call on the spirits of earth and wood to make your skin like bark. Who needs this protection the most? I warn, it will not last more than an hour."

Arissa uses her metamagic rod of extend spell.
GAME: Arissa casts Bless.

As preparations are made, Arissa holds a magic rod high overhead and chants in Celestial, smiling widely as her eyes glaze over fully gold. When she finishes a few seconds later, a burst of holy light washes over the group and inspires them once more. "With this, it should last even if we have to spend a few minutes pursuing them. I am not against letting another use it if they have pressing need!"

Ylva borrows Arissa's metamagic rod of extend spell.
GAME: Ylva casts Barkskin.

Ylva looks at the rod and frowns. She gets the idea and holds it in the air, drawing on its power as she summons the natural magic into Halani's body and hardens her skin like bark. "You are guarded by nature but be careful not to pick at it."

Also Ylva hands the rod back when done with it.

Of course, being told not to pick at it propells her to do just that. "It itches!" Halani complains. "And feels disgusting." Still... though she might not be saavy to most adventuring tactics, she can understand the benefit to this one. "Thanks." Sullen. "It isn't permament, right?"

Opening the door, you see an 80 foot long, 40 foot wide room. It looks to have been a large chamber at some point, but now it is a throne room for a kobold. Moldy and faded tapestries line the walls, and two large serving tables have been pushed together width wise along the backwall, upon which sits a large cushioned high back chair that serves as a throne. A rickety set of stairs has been made from other furniture and made to look as ghetto fabulous as possible. Sitting on the throne is a kobold with small horns and red scales, a simple crown of silver on his head. Twenty feet away from the door are two reddish colored kobolds, wearing no armor, their hands ending in vicious looking claws. And finally near the throne room are two overturned tables with four regular peon looking kobolds taking cover behind them, crossbows at the ready.

((I KNOW YOUR SCENT, COWARD. YOU KILLED MY SON AND RAN AWAY. YOU DID NOT LEARN YOUR LESSON THE FIRST TIME. NOW YOU DIE!)) Greelak shriek-squeaks, and his hands contort into arcane gestures, as do those of his two sons.

No surprise round.
Round 1
GAME: Arissa casts Obscuring Mist.

Arissa has absolutely no idea what was said, but she gets the tone of it at least; a fight is at hand. Realizing that the kobolds are likely to put up quite the withering barrage, she makes a few twirls and Celestial calls... and a mix of very dark gold mist, and sparklingly bright gold mist, fill the area around her. She retreats further within it, hopeful that this will shield the group for at least a few moments...

Meanwhile, Ylva stands steady and takes careful aim at Greelak. She waits for just the right moment...

Round 2

So Garth - either brave, or stupid - goes to say hello to the remaining spellcaster. The badly-burnt warrior is barely keeping himself on his feet, but he coils his body like a serpent, ready to strike the little scaly bastard if he tries anything.

Arissa can suddenly see a lot more of the room as much of her mist is burned away... and the people within it got off just as badly. So much fire... seeing little other choice, she dashes away from the fight, out of sight as she continues Celestial chanting... the air in front of herself ripples as she, hopefully unknown to those kobolds within, shields herself from some degree of flame.

The kobolds, who were previously taking a bead on the barely standing, should rightfully be dead, medieval Darkman, switch targets once giant goddamn wolf shows up in their midst. They backpedal, reloading their crossbows as fast as they can drop bolts into the beast.

Meanwhile, Dante peers around the corner and blanches, starts to haul the fallen monks out of the line of fire of more blasts of fire. "Oh man, oh man, oh man." He babbles, glancing over his shoulder for an attack that could come at any moment from flanking kobolds.

She fires another, striking Greelak in the chest. And another, four in all, the last pinning Greelak to his throne.

Round 3
GAME: Arissa casts Summon Monster II.

Arissa stays out of the battle... she hates it; it feels cowardly, keeping hidden away as others get cut and shot and burnt, and this lowers her voice significantly as she chants in Celestial; a glowing white circle forms on the ground in front of her, runes swirling within it as she prepares to at least send some aid to those still in the room...

Refusing negotiation, fighting with such vile means, and now you would flee to harm others some other day? I will not allow it!" She points at them, and the elemental makes deep rumbling noises in response, rocky 'fists' battering toward them. She sure can shoot a lot of arrows in a short span of time. The wand is dropped on the ground, forgotten for the moment. Meanwhile, Ulfr stops bleeding out.

Combat Ends

Arissa briefly considers pursuing the kobolds, but it's a thought she dismisses immediately; people are dying, likely soon to be (or already are?) dead. With no more threats, she hurries over to the fallen monks and begins tending to them. Her elemental is not so merciful; it gives pursuit, but Arissa pays that little mind. If the kobolds are finished off, great. If not, saving lives is more important right now...

"What if they warn the others?" Dante says with a worried look on his face. He springs to his feet and runs down the intersection, wounding one of the kobolds. An elemental kills the other, and the wounded kobold finally is hoisted on his own petard as he triggers the other fire trap, roasting him alive.

Inspecting the rest of the kobolds, Greelak is lying there, bleeding to death. Facing his imminent death, he hisses an ominous warning before passing, (We are but the tip of the spear. One thing left to do, Ylva puts away her bow and draws her longsword of dark metal and a hunting knife in the other hand. That's a very fine-looking weapon in contrast to her grubby savagery. It was probably made by dwarves. She goes up to Greelak and starts the grisly work of making a trophy from his skull.

After a few minutes of work, Arissa rises and puts her nearly depleted wands away. Wands well spent, as the nearly dead are... still rough off, but stable and functional. She smiles as Kanyk rises. "Pay it little mind. A wretch and his followers have been defeated, and you are well once more." She taps a wand with a finger, "Your kind gesture has saved your own life as well as another's. Thank you!"

Halani slowly opens her eyes with a groan. She's not a quick riser at the best of times. Eyelids that refuse to open initially finally manage to crack into slits. "I hate my life," she decides. "How am I not dead?" She braves a glance to the right, a glance to the left... then down at her clothes. This prompts a dry sigh.

Garth jolts awake. "Did we get 'em?" is his first question as he rights himself, pulling himself to his feet. He picks up and stows his weapon, before going about the gruesome business of removing tails. In Greelak's case, though? He removes the creature's head, leaving the crown mildly blood-spattered. He picks it up. Shines it. Packs it up.

Kanyk nods gently in Arissa's direction.... and then he immediately steps away from the wall, turning his head this way and that. "Wait.... what was that noise?!" He speaks loudly, looking around. Forgetting that he almost nearly died... at least for the moment. Not like he could ever forget a near death experience. He is just distracted from it momentarily. "There was a loud noise.... like an explosion!"

Ylva perks up and decides not to wrestle with Garth over the bloody remains. "What was that?" She follows him closely and Ulfr slouches along behind. "I heard a thing. You can take the crown. I want that head. You can even take the claws if you want them. He was a powerful enemy and deserves to have his memory preserved in the proper way. I need his head."

Halani just stays laying where she is. Not that she's ungrateful. But it seems to much safer to stay there rather than fall down again. "Are the kobolds dead? I really hope the kobolds are dead."

"They are dead enough," Arissa responds to Halani. "But an explosion... that is pressing. Perhaps we should leave?"

"Don't worry. Soon as we're back in camp, it's yours." Garth promises Ylva. He points out the chest, the harp. "Sniff around for more. Dante, come check this for traps." he calls the man over.

GAME: Arissa casts Detect Magic.

Halani finally starts to rise, then, wincing at stiffness and too freshly healed burn wounds. Ouch. Ouch. Eventually she makes it to her feet, spurred on by talk of an explosion. And, perhaps, the need to assist looting the fair gotten gains.

You gather your treasure and mend your wounds, wary of further attacks from kobolds. As you pick your way across the obstacles and slowly begin to investigate, you find a secret door left wide open at the t-intersection, leading to a small pantry/kitchen/laundry area. The kobolds seem to have converted it and it leads into a large 50' wide, (However Wide the two doors are apart) long feast hall. A tiny 3ft diameter tunnel has been burrowed out, but looks like it has caved in recently. Which explains the smell of black powder, given the smell of it in the air.

Those mysteries solved, you head back out to the surface to bask in the glory of having driven the kobolds from the Citadel...for now. (DUN DUN DUN)
