The posting in the Adventure's Guild is a... little vague. However the request comes directly from the city guard so you know it's not bogus. It seems that someone has been stalking the streets in black robes carrying a scythe. Originally this was thought to be an unwise adventurer scaring the locals by lurking around their homes and businesses late at night, but this particular individual has been found in the vicinity of what is now three corpses. Thus, they are wanted for questioning in relation to what might in fact be murder.

The grim-faced 'secretary' of the guild that informs you of all of this before handing you over the relevant paperwork doesn't seem overly impressed with the mission at hand. Or you. Or really anything. He informs you that the last body was found by a guardsman, and that the cloaked individual was seen by that same guardsman just down the street from where the body was found a few moments prior. And that, is all they know.

"So someone dressed up as the Grim Reaper has been spotted near people recently made in corpses?" The Gobbo cants her head. "How did the people die? I mean, was it obvious stabbings or like, burnt to a crisp or something?" Murder's ears stand up straight. "How do we know it isn't Death actually collecting his own? Can we talk to the guardsman?"

Kaj stands in the back, hunched over to avoid hitting crossbeams or light fixtures, and simply listens. He holds a raven in his huge palm, petting it gently with long fingers.

Olek grumbles at doing the Watch's work for them, but will nod as the job is given out. "So," he asks, "you absolutely want this fellow alive?" he checks. "Only, that's not normally what we do." He eyes his adamantine waraxe, and says, "Normally we kill villains. That keeps them from doing bad things afterward." He looks at Erendriel. "Is there such thing as warmball?"

Erendriel was getting food after she flew off from the Temples, but going by, she sees this posting and decides to see what's going on. "Oh hi Murder, Kaj. Funny seeing you again right away. Olek. So um. I don't have a warmball, no. But I have other magic that might be relevant."

"Ask the guardsman." Is the reply you get from the clearly uninterested secretary and so you're sent to give your questions to the guardsman himself. The guardsman is in fact one Balderdan Viet, and he's wearing newly minted lieutenant bars on his uniform. He has a very serious mein, but doesn't seem surprised by your questions. "They're wanted for /questioning/." He too eyes Olek, taking that as the most important question to answer. Lest you guys go and off some innocent witness. "They might merely be a bystander after all. As for the manner of death, near as we can tell the people just... dropped dead. Their hearts gave out or something, which is interesting given that they were all relatively healthy individuals."

He hesitates now, looking at Murder. "I suppose it could be... Death stalking the streets. I'm not the religious sort really, so I wouldn't know if there's a god or being that really does that sort of thing. I remember the cold feeling I felt when I saw that person though. Looking at them chilled me to the bone. So... maybe it /was/ some otherworldly being."

Kaj frowns, "Lieutenant Viet, do we know if the person is of say, human stature? Larger? Smaller? Any identifying features we should look for? Other than the scythe." He smiles joylessly.

Olek nods about not killing the suspect. "I'll try my best," he says. "Do you want us to start searching where he was last seen or what?" he wonders. "Tracking's hard in the city unless the snow's fresh," he explains. "But I can give it a go..."

"Well, it is Vardama, the death Dragon, who is the Goddess of death.", Murder replies to the guardsman, after having repeated her questions for him. "It is possible that it is some creature, or Death itself, using some powers to cause people to just... die. And you want to... question such a being? What if it decides that you, too, should just die? How do we bring it in for questioning?" The Gobbo huffs, and moves to Kaj's side... where she leans against the Giantborn to await the guardsman's answers to all of their questions.

Erendriel folds her hands. Listening to the guard, tilting her head. "Well Murder, that's why they're hiring us. They want us to take the risk. So we should find out where these bodies were found, and go see what's going on?"

The lieutenant considers Kaj's question very seriously for a few moments. "They were very tall, at least as tall as the Giantborn tend to be, but much thinner. But you have my permission to stop anyone you see lurking about in a black cloak and carrying a scythe. If it helps... the scythe itself was red in color. The blade that is not the hilt. That should be unusual enough to identify them I would think."

Balderdan frowns slightly, but seems to accept Olek's words. "I can tell you exactly where the last body was found, and maybe you /can/ track it. Just patrolling the streets a few nights should mean that you find it eventually." He turns his attention to Murder and blanches a bit. "Well... if it /is/ a celestial being just going about it's business we don't expect you to stop it! But it's a little suspicious that we've never had this problem before now. If the gods were going to send someone visible to us, why only now?"

"I think what Erendriel suggests makes most sense, thank you lieutenant," says Kaj, apparently satisfied to wait while the others do more of the Q and A.

Olek agrees also. "If we can look at the crime scene, we will see what may be seen."

Kaj smiles and changes to fit the very description the guard gave them. "Something like this?" he asks, having used his hat of disguise to do the Ea version of a Perp Sketch.

Murder begins to climb up the side of Kaj, eventually settling upon his shoulder. "Yeah, but even if it is not a celestial being, what if it is some powerful demon? Or a powerful earthly being? Do we drag it in for questioning, or is it okay if we beat it to death?" She crosses her arms and huffs.

Erendriel grabs her broom and gets ready to go. "Murder, there's no need to resort to m.... those means. Let's figure that out when we get there?"

"If you find it to be a demon, then by all means - kill it. But if it's a mortal or otherwise, we need to find out if it's their doing, and then persecute them if they are. That's the law." Balderdan nods to you all, and you head out to where he tells you the last body is. It seems it's his night off so he's not coming with you.

It's a lonely street you find yourself on. An alleyway beside a thacher and a bootmaker that's as unremarkable as could be. There's no sign of anyone else on the street. The cold wintery air has chased most people into their homes at this late hour.

Olek nods at what Erendriel says. "If he's innocent, he's got nothing to fear, so we can just talk to him. If he attacks us, though, he must be guilty, so there'd be no need to bring him in, in that case." Olek makes up hypothetical cases and presents unsatisfactory solutions. Then we're out to the street!

The Gobbo fidgets on the Giantborn's shoulder, and then she squints, peering down a different alleyway. She becomes very agitated, and reaches out to tug a little on Kaj's hair. "That way!", she says in a harsh whisper. "There's a red glow an' I think I saw someone walking down there." Her heels lightly kick against the man's shoulders.

Kaj nods quietly, "Aye," he offers, continuing to walk slowly and nonchalantly but changing directions, hoping the others will cover him.

Olek will turn on his heel and hiss, "After him!" He sprints as fas as he can after the fellow in the nearby alley. So we can ask questions. Pointed questions.

GAME: Erendriel casts Invisibility. Caster Level: 10 DC: 18

Erendriel hops onto her broom, mutters something arcane, and disappears from sight before lifting off into the air to get close and see what is there to be seen.

You split up, which... is very rarely a good idea. However in this instance it perhaps as Kaj lands from his brief flight to the end of the alleyway that Olek is currently running down, he is run into by a small gnomish man who was so busy looking behind himself that he didn't notice Kaj at all until the other man was simply there to be bumped into. "Help me! He's after me!" Squeaks the gnome, looking quite terrified. A moment later, Olek comes barreling down the alleyway full-force.

Meanwhile Erendriel notices something peculiar from her perch in the sky. As the man collides with Kaj and Olek comes out of the mouth of the alleyway, she catches a flicker of red in the alley /behind/ Olek. Though from her height it's hard to make out what it is. Particularly given that it seems to disappear the moment that she notices it.

The Gobbo squeaks as Kaj takes flight and she clings to his shoulder. She peers down at the roads and alleyway below, and giggles as they come in to land. She slithers down the back of Kaj as the Gnome bumps into the Giantborn's leg. "Who is after you? Or what, I suppose the proper term is... tell us what is going on!"

Erendriel starts watching more intently behind Olek, looking for any signs of red flashes, and trying very carefully to figure out what they might be. She drops down a bit, just hovering about 8 feet in the air. Still invisible, adjusting her magic goggles.

Olek eyes the gnome suspiciously, but he doesn't have the imposing mein like Kaj or anyone. In fact, he looks the opposite of imposing, adamantine waraxe notwithstanding. He says to the gnome, "What are you doing lurking around alleys, then? You killed him, didn't you?" He points his finger accusingly.

The gnome squeaks again and hurriedly hides behind Kaj. "I don't know who he is! And I don't know anything about a murder! I live near here!" He starts to draw himself up a little bit against Olek's tirade, but then pales. Pales as a figure takes form just to the side of Olek. It's a robed figure carrying a red scythe. You can't see inside the cowl through the shadows in the night, but given the size of the figure its impossible to miss. The robed figure holds its hand toward the gnome and the gnome lets out a horrified noise, but doesn't seem to have the will to run away. Instead he drops to his knees. In fact all of you feel it to some degree. An arch of fear. A cold rising up along your spine that wasn't there before.

Erendriel sees this going on, and gets concerned. So she breaks invisibility, mutters something else arcane, and points at the man, causing an oily slick to surround him on the ground. She then backs off, just in case.

Murder steps before the Gnome, putting herself between the poor man and the robed man. "Hold on a moment. Why are you chasing this poor man? What is your purpose here? Are you Death? Or pretending to be?" She crosses her arms before her and takes a defiant pose.

GAME: Olek rolls cmb: (9)+14: 23

Olek turns on the robed figure and swats at his hands to push him away. "Not now, pal," he says. "We're arresting a dangerous fellow." He points to the gnome. "You don't know, he could totally kill you if you're not careful!" He then peers critically at the man. "Hey .... you got a license for that scythe?" he demands critically, reaching out to grab the fellow's arm when he slips and falls, but the slip puts him out of reach and Olek only catches air.

GAME: Kaj rolls cmb+3: (1)+12+3: 16 (EPIC FAIL)

Kaj drops down on the Figure like a stone, hair expanding to several yards in length while changing colour from blue to white. He is grinning and focused on the plans he has to help Olek--so much so that he doesn't see the clothing lines strung across the alley and ends up almost decapitating himself, dropping prone into the grease puddle, all thoughts of grappling and flying forgotten from the shock.

GAME: Aftershock rolls 1d20+13: (7)+13: 20

The deathly figure is revealed as it falls down onto the ground; the hood of it's cloak thrown back. It's a gaunt and delicately figured individual with glowing, sparking white where its eyes should be. Long white hair ripples in the air as the figure levitates back to its feet and moves toward the terrified gnome hiding behind Murder. It swings its scythe at the gnome, and the weapon seems to pass through the gnome, glowing ominously for a moment and then the gnome falls to the ground; gasping for air. "I am a servant of the goddess of Death. I am chasing this poor man because I must kill him." The figure sighs, its hood floating up to cover its features once more. "My purpose... has been tainted."

Erendriel shouts "No! If he dies I'll pay to revive him team!" She then shouts arcane words, and points again, firing three bright, red rays at the scythe man, the shots slamming into his body with fire and heat.

Erendriel frowns when the shots... don't seem to affect him in the least.

"Why?", the Gobbo wonders. "Why are you doing it this way? What is your purpose, then?" Murder eyes Kaj, and slowly moves to his side, patting at his arm. "Are ya alright, Kaj?" She glances back to the robed figure. "Why is an avatar of the Goddess of Death stalking the streets, killing people who were, apparently, in decent health? How has your purpose been tainted?" The Gobbo peers at others. "Hold on! Stop attacking... if this IS an avatar or some servant of Vardama... you're only going to piss her off by messing with it."

Olek bristles as the reaper fellow ignores his protests and attacks the gnome. "Hey, I said stop!" he complains. He takes a breath, lets it out, and the ire in his eyes flares. Metaphorically. He fumes, taking a defensive set to his feet, bracing himself as he shouts, "Hold on now! None of this reaping, not without the church's sayso." And then he just grabs the fellow, ignoring the scythe that clunks off his armor as he grips the figure's arm. It's solid, which he wasn't quite expecting, in a way. He looks a bit surprised to have done it, though, and he says, "I've got him?"

Kaj floats up and away from the grease puddle, dripping some of said grease from his knees, toes and hands, "Your purpose has been tainted?" he asks sternly but trying to sound fair if not reasonable, "Can we not discuss it rather than have you attack this Little One? She is a fair goddess, is she not?" He wipes his hands on the wall as he speaks calmly to the entity.

The world begins to darken around the specter of death, darkens until it becomes impossible to see around the being. It's voice echoes out a response even as it physically pushes Olek away from itself. "I once served a goddess, but now I am forced to serve a mortal. My purpose has been tainted. My purpose..." It lets out an odd haunting noise and the darkness around it makes that sound even more eerie than it normally would. "I am forced to serve..." It's voice seems to fade a little.

Kaj turns to Erendiel, "He is compelled!!" he shouts, a plaintive tone in his voice.

Erendriel nods to the shouting Kaj, and says "Let me try..." She then looks to the death figure, and speaks some more soothing arcane words. Blinking her eyes, doing her charming best as she leans into the charm spell as she concludes with a "Stop..." but Death's actions and movements seem entirely unaffected by the attempt.

The Gobbo eyes Kaj a moment, and upon hearing the being's words, holds up her arms. "Hold on! We gotta hear it out..." Murder looks to the robed figure once more, "Who are you serving, then, spirit? Tell us so that we might make this right!"

The specter can no longer be seen through the darkness, but its voice can be heard loud and clear. "I serve Tanith Lee Harper. She commands me to kill, and to kill those that attack me in my duties. I must kill her." With that the Death rises up quickly out of the darkness and into the night sky; until it reaches Erendriel's side.

"Or not... guess we'll do it the hard way. HEEEEY LADY!" She waves at Erendriel. "Come back down here so we can kill it, yes?"

Erendriel squeaks when Death comes to her broomstep. Hitting the panick button, she hastily adjusts her armor, makes another casting, , and instead of going invisible... she and her broom turn to a translucent gas. and she starts floating back toward the party.

GAME: Kaj rolls CMB+3: (2)+12+3: 14

Kaj launches himself into the sky, his magic moving him towards the flying entity, his hair and arms reaching out to try to slow it down, for all the world looking like he's been catapulted and electrocuted at the same time but he barely manages to touch the hem of its robe, let alone grab it in any way.

GAME: Kaj rolls weapon0: (13)+12: 25

The specter of Death chases after Erendriel relentlessly, moving just ten feet like she does. It's struck by Kaj in the process though, and it turns it's hood toward him. "Now, I must kill you too."

Erendriel stays in gaseous form, since she's not taking any chances about any form of touch of death. But she keeps wafting her way down, approaching the party 10 feet at a time.

Murder watches the dance above, and winces when Kaj high-five-slams the Death. "Spirit! You know that this is wrong, yet you continue along the path. Tell me... has Tanith Lee Harper specifically forbid you from reaping her? For that seems to be the easiest path to release yourself from her grasp. Would her death return you to the Death Dragon? Would Vardama not view Harper's interference in your tasks ... rather poorly? Would Harper's death not please the Death Dragon? A fitting punishment for interfering?"

Olek looks up, and .... well, he'd like to participate in this, but it's a bit complicated. So, he goes into his pack, and as quickly as he can, he unfurls his trusty magic carpet. Making sure to orient it correctly so he doesn't wind up flying backwards.

Erendriel wafts ten feet closer still to the party. Yeah, it's boring. Yeah she's actually kind of annoyed at how slowly she moves in a pinch in this form. But seeing Kaj get attacked, she's also pretty relieved that wasn't her.

The death turns on Kaj, swinging its deadly scythe twice and scouring two heavy hits on the man. Even while it attacks it intones, answering Murder. "I can not kill the one that controls me. But once freed, I will reap that life and take it home to my goddess."

The Gobbo huffs and shakes her head. "So how do we free you? Help us help you. And please stop attacking my companions. If you are ordered to kill them... certainly you can delay it for a short time. Did she say specifically that you must kill immediately?"

Kaj is angry at being hit with the scythe, despite the Mithril taking the brunt of it. He begins to speak though it sounds more like vibrating tin than normal speech...then it becomes obvious why as the swarm of wasps froths out of his mouth, flying towards the entity...

Suddenly a great gout of wind surrounds the figure of death, billowing its robes in every direction and sending the insects spinning in pieces away from it. "I must kill those that attack me. There is no disobeying. I must do as I am ordered."

Erendriel makes a break for it. She gets herself another 10 feet away from death, toward the main of the party, actually gaining a small amount of distance. At this rate, she'll get to try to counterattack sometime next week.

Because he's definitely attacking it, heavy axe blows swung from over his shoulder, hacking hard at he figure. Though he's not sure if it's doing much good. His first swing whooshes over its head, the second, well, might have hurt it. He's not sure. It ought to have. "I could lead it back to the Watchhouse," he suggests. Olek is fighting like a madman, appropriately, deflecting and avoiding the thing's attacks, and he manages to line up a sweet shot, or so he thought, taking advantage of a moment's inattentiveness to deliver a massive blow to it. It ... may even have done something. But it's still fighting on, so Olek isn't giving up, either.

Undeterred by the wound given to it by Olek the specter continues to attack Olek. "Even if you defeat me, she will simply summon me again. You can not deter death." It sounds... sad and tired. It's swings are at best half-hearted.

Erendriel grips her rod tightly. And making an unholy grimace, she quietly chants some arcane words. Her free hand lifting, she points at Death, and some GREEN rays burst forth from her, hurling corrosively through the air, slamming into death, and this time dissipating the spirit. "Ugh, disgusting," she says, dry heaving.

Murder huffs as the spirit evaporates. "We gotta find out who this lady is and where she lives. She's gonna resummon it and have it kill more people. And we need ta get the guards." She walks over to Kaj, looking up at him. "Are you alright, Kaj? So you need healing? Does anyone need some healing?"

Kaj lands and drops to one knee. He gives Erendriel the look she deserves for that, and Olek too. Then he turns his attention to his friend. "Aye, I've a bit of ability there but perhaps you have much greater talent?" he asks, hopeful.

Olek shouts back at it, "If that's the case, take us to your mistress. We will have her unshackle you from this chain that binds you!" And then Erendriel's dissolved it. "So," he says, panting as he comes down from his rage. "Two problems. One, now we don't know where it came from, or who summoned it. Apparently they can summon it again. And two, the watch wanted someone alive." No disintegrations.

Erendriel crouches and holds her knees. "It was a spirit. It wasn't a person. You could see that right? It was flying. It was completely immune to fire. Completely immune. There was no way we were arresting it and bringing it back without getting everyone killed. That's what we tell them, the truth."

GAME: Murder used a Potion of Cure Serious Wounds.

Olek huhs. "The truth? We can /try/ that," he says skeptically. "It hasn't worked particularly well for me in the past, though." As the potions come out, he says, "How's that gnome?"

They'll likely be interested. Angry too." She pulls out a number of potion bottles, all brightly coloured. The Gobbo hands a purple one to Kaj. "That'll help you feel better and cure up your wounds."

Kaj drinks the Murder Cocktail (famous last words ;) and basks in the incredible feeling of being regenerated from within. "It gave us a name, we have that to give them. Lilian Harper Lee, If I heard correctly..."

Kaj gives Murder a little two-fingered squeeze of the shoulder in a show of gratitude and physical restraint!

"Tanith Lee Harper.", the Gobbo says, squeaking at the two-fingered death grip. She snorts at the Giantborn.

Olek shrugs at the name. "No one I heard of. Sounds like someone who writes sad vampire books or something." He'll land, then, and check on the gnome since no one else is.

Erendriel shakes her head and slowly stands. "Why don't we take... the gnome in, explain he was a target, tell them that name, and go from there?" She shivers again.

As it turns out, the gnome died during the course of your combat. So you tell the guards who quickly take you to woman in question. She denies everything, and really you have no proof that she's connected to the Death...
