Session 1

<OOC> Iadoth says, "Oh yeah, there's a log on. But I'll trim this stuff out."
<OOC> Terewin says, "Also Iadoth, it can be helpfull to go on the r3 channel with an alt, keeps your log cleaner and can still keep tabs on our plotting."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Note to all: This is my first time running (a) a Pathfinder game and (b) a plot on Tenebrae. That doesn't mean I've never GMed before. But it does mean that you might need to be patient, and possibly helpful."
<OOC> Kaj says, "I'm glad to hear that because I'm no rules master either."
<OOC> Bennet has not played in a while, is slightly fuzzy on some things himself. no worries.
<OOC> Terewin can help if needed but is not a super stickler. Lets just have fun!
<OOC> Iadoth says, "So there're characters here who weren't at the meetup. Long story short: The village of Felris, and a few roads in the Borderlands, have been beset by weird creatures. Cattle are going missing. Merchant guards are dying. It's all a little bit bad. The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce have requested guild adventurers to travel to Felris, and help out. You're that help."

<OOC> Iadoth says, "I'll post the opening pose / desc, then you're welcome to get started."
<OOC> Kaj says, "OK, excellent."

Felris's a small, dishevelled place. Just a few farms, a tavern, a tiny shop and some rickety labourers cottages. A muddy track leads through the centre of the village. In one direction, Alexandrosâ heartlands; in the other, the border with the Vast. It's not the last stop, but it's getting there.

Your host is Malfor, a huge farmer with enormous gnarly hands. As you descend from the cart that brought you here, you see him standing outside the tavern, watching, with a few other farmers.

"œNow then," he shouts across the square. "œThis is Felris, and you've come to help out."

<OOC> Kaj says, "How many hours/days out are we from Alex?"
<OOC> Iadoth says, "I don't really know how far the borders are from the capital, but potentially a few days."
<OOC> Kaj says, "OK, just for posing purposes. thanks :)"
<OOC> Iadoth says, "There're mountains to cross and so forth."

Bennet plods his ugly ass along the road into Felris. It's not the mule's fault, a mishap with a lantern a few nights back has left the beast ragged but healthy. The Absolution sits atop, idly checking and rechecking his equipment, peering around with passive curiousity. "I'ma just glad ta be getting out and helping folks that need it. Been too much politics mucking up things of late."

<OOC> Kaj says, "OK, so we would have time to become acquainted. Great, I will pose accordingly :)"

Terewin straightens his collar and brushes some dust from his pant leg. "Yes yes, positively delightful isn't it?" he says looking around at the farm and approaching the farmers "Indeed, what my grumpier colleague said, we are very happy to help. Sir Terewin of the Blue Rose at your services my good sirs." he makes a short bow with a flourish.

<OOC> Iadoth says, "Wonderful."
<OOC> Kaj says, "And, before we even get started, thanks for running this."
<OOC> Bennet says, "Agreed. Timing doesn't work out for me too often, sometimes hard to get in on things."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "You're welcome, I hope it goes to plan. The first scene is just background, you can spend as long or as little on it as you like. The second scene is an encounter. I don't have anything properly planned for after that, but if we get there, I'll improvise."

Malfor nods, and wanders over, offering a hand to let Bennet down from the mule. "I'm Malfor," he tells them. "Sir Terewin, I remember ye. Welcome, welcome."

The wagon rises visibly as Kaj steps off the back, where he has been riding standing up for the last few hours, occasionally stopping to jog along, giving the draft animals a break. He has bonded with the horses and seems to have an uncanny ability to meet and anticipate their needs.

The Jotunbrund circles around the wagon and offers his dinner-plate-sized hand to Malfor, "Pleasure to be here at last, Master Malfor," he booms, smiling.

The farmer Malfor chuckles. "Master? Only me lad calls us that, and even that's fir a joke." His vowels are elongated, and the words are almost slurred together. "Now then, here we are. Thur's the tavern, the Buck and Dandy, thur's the shop, nothing fancy like t'big city, mind, and the rest -- all farms."\ Bennet nods politely, perhaps not as spry as he once was but still more fit than many men half his age. "Anything of note happen since we last heard from ya'll? Reckon the sooner we get started, sooner ya'll can rest easy."

"Aye," Malfor tells you. "Aye. More sheep this week, gone. Good dog too, a badger hound. Damn shame!" He looks to the heavens.

 GAME: Iadoth rolls d12: (5)+d12: 5

"I've got a funny ol' feelin' in me watters about this, lads, you mark my words."

Blinking down at Malfor, Kaj doesn't say anything about the 'Master' comment but takes a different talk. Quietly, he asks, "Could I see any of the animals that were around the ones that went missing?"

<OOC> Kaj says, "talk=tack. Sorry."

Terewin eyes the town with a bit of a worried expression, if only for a moment before smiling again. "Indeed! Thanks for the hospitality. We will resolve the issues with sheep missing with haste and precision!" he notes cheerfully. "With any luck its just some stray owlbears to put the sword to."

"Aye, we cen garn over t't farm, if you like," Malfor mutters. "Other folks 'ave 'ad problems, too. Ye cen axe 'em all ye like --- usual, like, they'll be in't Buck an' Dandy."

<OOC> Iadoth says, "I'm being a bit verbose, sorry."
<OOC> Kaj says, "I love it :) Personality galore."

"I'd like to see the animals first, Malfor," replaies Kaj emphatically, glancing towards the farm Malfor nodded towards.

Bennet glances to Terewin, but nods. "When was the most recent attack? Like ta take a look at the site later. Reckon ya'll got better trackers than my old eyes, but maybe I know sumthin ta look fer."

<OOC> Iadoth says, "Any other comments?"
<OOC> Kaj says, "None from me :)"
<OOC> Terewin says, "Nope."

One of the many ravens that has been following the 'caravan' arrives and lands on the roof of the wagon.

Kaj pages: That's my Raven familiar :)
Kaj pages: But i haven't revealed it to the others yet.
Bennet has reconnected.
<OOC> Bennet says, "Back. Not sure why, but modem suddenly disconnected. Missed anything after my last."
<OOC> Kaj says, "Page ya."

Malfor shakes his head. "Nah, we's simple folks here. Nuttin' fancy, like. The trappers come by e'er now an' 'gen, but they's kept 'way an' all." He gestures towards the other end of the village. "Let's go take a look, then." The farmer walks at a steady pace away from the main square.

Seeming pleased with this course of action, Kaj smiles slightly, first at Bennet, then at Sir Terewin, then follows the farmer.

Bennet follows after, eyeing the black bird mildly. Too easy to read into things that aren't related, but too easy to miss clues that matter.

Terewin follows as well, carefull not to step in anything that might mar the polish of his boots.

<OOC> Iadoth says, "BRB"

Once out of the main town, the path is muddy and poached, and there's cow muck everywhere on the approach to the farm. Still, Terewin's efforts to maintain clean boots are just about possible, as the ground is more tacky than soft, but it's almost futile.

The farm is a muddy mess. The farmhouse itself is a two-storey fortified type, typical to the border regions of any country. Emanating outwards is a series of higgledy-piggedly fields, bounded by ancient-looking dry stone walls. Livestock and the associated accoutrements litter the fields: Sheep, mostly, with a pair of dairy cows and a small herd of pigs.

The farmer shows you round, explaining that his dog scared off /something/ two nights back. Last night, the thing came back, and took the dog, and two sheep to boot. There's a grizzly corpse of the former, partially eaten. Of the latter, not a trace has been found.

Taking this all in for a bit, Kaj walks around and listens to Malfor. When he finishes telling them informatino on what happened, he goes over to the sheep and squats by them. "Hello," he says, and then what sounds like a bunch of gibberish.

Kaj pages: I have Feral Speech and can speak with all animals , one 'genus' at a time. So I'd like to ask these little sheepies what, if anything, they saw or think is happening , if that's ok :)

The sheep stare at Kaj blankly, then, unperturbed, continue to eat. The ram wanders over and eyes him suspiciously, then begins to bleat lowly.

Bennet leaves Kaj to the sheep, and takes a look at the corpse. And a little moreso, the tracks around it. The cowpoke takes care not to step in anything too grizzly, but isn't worried about a bit of mud.

GAME: Bennet rolls survival: (3)+3: 6
Bennet has partially disconnected.

You paged Kaj with 'Big thing came by. Stripey, black, bitey. Got two of mine. Tried to get it. Didn't get it. Dog barked. Dog came. Dog died.'

<OOC> Kaj says, "alas, i have to take a phone call. i'll be very slow for about 15, so sorry."
<OOC> Bennet is also up for perception or k/the planes if those would help.
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Anyone have k/dungeoneering or k/nature?"

Terewin produces a scented hankershief from a pocket and covers his mouthand nose against the smell as he eyes the corpse. "Terrible, don't suppose you see any tracks?" he asks Bennet from behind the perfumed cloth.

<OOC> Terewin doesn't have either.
<OOC> Bennet does not

Bennet squints for a time, then sighs and shakes his head. "Nuthin that makes sence to me."

<OOC> Iadoth says, "Okay, thanks. From CRB: "you can retry a failed check after 1 hour (outdoors) of searching.""

Terewin furrows his brow and then begins looking himself as well, trying to be usefull for more than standing around and looking pretty, nomatter how good he is at it.

<OOC> Terewin will try survival.
GAME: Terewin rolls survival: (10)+0: 10

"If ye've any questions," Malfor tells you. "Ah'll be bringin' t't cows in." He holds a hand up to the sky, counting four fingers between the sun and the horizon. "'Bout an hour til dusk, reckons I."

<OOC> Iadoth says, "Oh, that's a close roll. How do assists work in PF?"
<OOC> Terewin says, "Someone else can assist, in which case they need to make a 10 and it adds a +2 to my roll."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Thanks! Unless Kaj does this, you can try again in an hour xD"
<OOC> Bennet figures talk with some of the locals, then try again a little further out. 'now armed with additional information, we have an idea what to look for...'

The farmer wanders off to another field where his cows are doing their best to find grass within the ragwort.

Terewin ponders the site, hankerchief momentarily forgotten as he ponders the scene. "You think the farmers know where... whatever did this came from?" he asks Bennet. "Perhaps they know where predators hole up and we can see if we cannot pick up some signs closer by."

<OOC> Kaj says, "i am here, judst super slow"

Bennet nods. "Likely not where it came from. But maybe which direction. Maybe one got a look, tell us how it moved or some such. More we know, better we do."

<OOC> Kaj says, "i don't have survival skill"
GAME: Kaj rolls survival: (20)+1: 21
<OOC> Iadoth says, "That'll do, though."
<OOC> Kaj says, "still on call, so sorry"
<OOC> Iadoth says, "No worries at all."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "I'll just slightly interfere with your char to speed it up."

The tracks are definitely animal tracks, and they're those of several badgers, some with unusually large forepaws. This is probably consistent with the way Malfor's badger hound was attacked. Kaj can follow them easily through the fields, leading away from the sheep, and indeed away from the village, towards the borders in the distance.

Terewin is happy that Kaj found something and happily follows along, happy to be away from the smell of the corpse. "I am sure it will be a quick mop up!" he comments as they go along.

Bennet mmms. "Ain't so sure. Sounds like more than one of these... whaever they are. One might go down easy. Finding them all might be tough."

<OOC> Kaj says, "nback, catching up as fast as i can"

At the edge of a large wood, there's a huge mound of earth, into which several quite large tunnels, which are larger than you might expect for a normal badger. There are scraps of wool and hide outside, and the grizzly remains of several of the missing sheep. Another pile has smaller bones, and it's likely that this is Malfor's missing badger hound.

"It's as the Boss Ram said: Large, stripey. Some sort of tainted badgers?" he adds, after tagging along quietly for a long time.

Terewin hrms. "Don't suppose we can talk them out of it?" he says drawing his sword. "Lets be done with this, get rid of these smelly things."

Bennet winces a little, and re-checks his weapon. "Badgers are onery enough normal-like. Ain't sure i like the thought of tainted ones."

Kaj shrugs, "Well, let me see if I can speak with them, and you be ready if they choose not to speak?"

Kaj pages: badgers (normal ones) are mammals, just like sheep so I don't even have to change modes, if we take that tack :) Yay!

Bennet mmms. "Reckon depends on what that have ta say. But iffen The Lady wills, they die." He's a hitman for Death. Some things are non-negotiable.

The party are approximately 90 ft. from the mound of earth, clearly a badger sett, when a thick-set badger clambers out of the sett and barks at you. Another, this one with one enormous front paw, pops out of another hole. They're watching you, cautiously. The larger one is growling angrily.

Terewin sheaths his sword at Kaj's words "By all means ask them, wouldn't hurt to talk if it will get us somewhere, otherwise we can take them on as needed."

<OOC> Kaj says, "I would very much like to try to chat weith them :)"
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Okaily."
<OOC> Kaj will pose then we can resolve any rolls or you can pose reactions?
You paged Kaj with 'The barks and growls from the large badger are loosely translatable as: "This is our territory. Get lost. GET LOST. We're fierce, fierce killers. Stay away from my mates. I'm livid about you approaching. Get lost. GET LOST."'
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Just pagin' ya."
<OOC> Bennet would like to use Detect Evil on the closer.

The Jotun stands to his full height, mimicking their stance then takes a few steps back, motioning for the others to back up as well then starts chattering back to them after issuing a very forceful "STEP BACK!" to his companions when the big badger starts to bark and growl.

Kaj pages: We will step back, but we are fierce warriors too. Our pack needs the food you are taking from them when you go into their wooden burrows and fields and take their animals. you must stop this or you will all be killed. If you learn to take only what they offer, there will be peace, like with you and the coyotes, otherwise, we must fight you. with fire.

You paged Bennet with 'You detect no evil auras emanating from the creature.'

Bennet peers at the badgers a few moments, his blue eyes flashing grey... and then he relaxes a little, stepping back. Quietly, he says "They ain't bad. Onery, sure, but not Bad."

A conversation of barks and grunts continues between the Jotun and the alpha badger.

Kaj nods quietly to Bennet, in complete agreement, but is almost totally focused on the badger boss who could obviously go either way.

You paged Kaj with 'We are stronger than you are. We are! My mates and I, we can destroy you. We will eat sheep, eat all kinds of creatures. Ate badger hound, ancient enemy. Will eat men, cows, oruchi, anything. Oruchi, especially. Fought them before. Will win against you, no problem.'

Kaj pages: (oruchi? SHould i know what those are or is it intentionally the way he is saying it?) :) THIS IS SO FUN.
You paged Kaj with 'Oruchi are Ea's orcs.'

Terewin looks up at the sky, patiently waiting for the conversation to finish, his hands visible and empty so he does not provoke the things. He doesn't know hwo intelligent they are.

<OOC> Iadoth says, "Just out of interest, how do passive Perception checks work?"
<OOC> Terewin says, "Easiest way is to have everyone take 10."
You paged Kaj with 'You two-leggers, you all the same. You come, try to kill. This time, no. This time we'll get you, like we got Oruchi.'

The leader badger lets out an almighty roar, and steps a few feet out of the sett. The other does the same; they're approaching you!

Frowning, Kaj looks rather concerned with what the Daddy Badger is saying.

"You cannot hope to win," he says to the badger in badger speech, making himself as big as he can. "YOu cannot hope to win against us," he continues, and as he speaks, he begins to levitate, and his red hair, eyebrows and sideburns extrude outwards, flailing like some hariy giant medusa head, "How can you fight us when we can fly and rain death on you from above and into your warrens? Do not die for nothing, Badger, you cannot take what is not yours. Share like the sheep and cows share the pasture, or we will kill you."

<OOC> Kaj says, "Ah, I finished posing half a sec later!!! ;D"
<OOC> Iadoth says, "D'oh, sorry. Too keen."

Bennet may not speak badger, but he's pretty fluent in Battle.

It is now Big Badger's turn! Big Paw Badger 2 is next!
<OOC> Bennet is, and suddenly worried about that.

Terewin deftly parries a ferocious badger with the flick of the wrist and twinkle of steel as it charges after him, slashing the muzzle and bringing it down as he does so. "Ferocious things, bit a shame really..." he comments with a shrug and watches the ground, ready to pounce as soon as the other badger shows itself.

<OOC> Kaj says, "afk for 2 mins"

The big badger emerges from the ground a few feet from Bennet, and leaps up, jaws open, ready to bite.

<OOC> Kaj says, "Oh good to know there's a diff. I had forgotten that."

The charging badger receives a faceful of shrapnel, and looks exceedingly miffed about this. Still, it keeps snarling and barking as Bennet steps back from it.

<OOC> Iadoth says, "Anything else?"

Bennet blinks as a badger burst up and attacks him, stepping quickly back from the beast. "That's different..." another roll of artifical thunder, and a burning wound marks the animal's hide.

<OOC> Terewin says, "Threatening."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Actually, if Bennet took a step back, the badger's not threatened, so I don't think you can flank?"
<OOC> Terewin says, "That too"
<OOC> Kaj says, "Oh right right. I'll delay my action and tell the badger that if it wants to live, it must stop fighting now."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "But you can still attack. Remember that the charging takes 2 out of its AC anyway."
<OOC> Kaj says, "can i talk to it, then react to it depending on iif it stops?"
<OOC> Kaj says, "if it doewS'NT STOP, then i can do an attack?"
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Yes, 'freedom of speech' and all."
<OOC> Kaj says, "posing"

Floating above the fray, red hair flaying like a storm-witch, Kaj gives the badger another chance, "Tiny One, surrender or die!"

The barks and snarls of the wounded, raging badger speak for themselves, but can be translated as: 'You killed my mate. I'll kill the lot of you!'

<OOC> Iadoth says, "Go for it."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "What's the Survival check for?"
<OOC> Kaj says, "ok, i want to see which burrow looks to be most recently used after those two, and if i can, then i will cast my spell into that, otherwise, i'll just pick one at random."

<OOC> Kaj says, "i'm sending it into the burrow ..."
<OOC> Kaj says, "http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/monsters/spider.html#spider-swarm"
<OOC> Kaj says, "The sight of a carpet of swarming spiders is unsettling indeed—particularly when the swarm is made up of spiders each the size of a gold coin and possessing blade-like mandibles capable of lacerating flesh with sickening ease. A swarm of spiders is a colonial mass of arachnids that relies on overwhelming much larger prey with sheer numbers rather than catching smaller snacks. While spider swarms spin webs, these webs are incapable of catching larger prey and typically serve the swarm as a lair rather than a method of capturing dinner."

<OOC> Iadoth says, "Are you done?"

Kaj pages: maybe 10'? 20'? CUz i vomited the swarm into it?
You paged Kaj with 'Me too.'

Kaj pages: or would i need to charge and forgo the LB? Or can one charge and cast?
Kaj pages: i'm so bad at combat rules , so sorry
You paged Kaj with 'Spells are standard actions, I think, so you can't do both.'
Kaj pages: so i can move 30's wlaking AND zap, but no charge and zap, right?

You paged Kaj with 'Right (Y)'

<OOC> Iadoth says, "Okay, so all the badgers are slain. What's the next move?"

Kaj continues his jog over to Terewin, wanting to inspect that strange badger and its strange noises...

<OOC> Iadoth says, "I guess the badger isn't dead yet. It is unconscious and dying, though."
<OOC> Kaj says, "Oh good, i can have a chat with it :)"
<OOC> Iadoth says, "You could, but as I said, it's dying :)"
<OOC> Kaj says, "it ain't dea til it's warm and dead! ;)"
Kaj pages: has cure ligth wounds, but eh, no time for what would otherwise been an interesting dilemma!

Bennet continues to mutters, swiftly swapping out a fireing crystal, or something, in his rifle, eyes alert for any more nasty critters.

<OOC> Iadoth says, "I'll wrap this up if you're happy with that approach, seeing as you don't have much time."
<OOC> Kaj says, "Yea, or i can wonder and go dig in the mounds for treasure or something so you guys don't ahve to rush on my account"
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Okay, that works for me."
<OOC> Kaj says, "K, i'll tell ya when i have to afk :)"

Terewin stabs at the last badger, wiping the blood off his sword in its fur. "Well thats done with, blasted wild animals." he mutters, seemingly unconcerned with the mound.

Kaj has partially disconnected.

The badger with the small head breathes its last breath a few seconds later as Kaj wanders off absent-mindedly to investigate the sett behind. The sun is beginning to sett, but there's enough light left to have a look around, if one was so minded.

<OOC> Iadoth says, "Terewin, Bennet: Do you want to do anything else here, or just head back to the village?"
<OOC> Bennet maens to have a bit of a look aorund, unless the Badger Whisperer has some sort of explination to Mutant Badgers.
<OOC> Kaj says, "I would have loved to interrogate the badger after tying it up and healing it, but i have RL coming v shortly ;)"
<OOC> Kaj says, "so i'll go dig around the mounds, see what might be in there, maybe there's the bones of the dog we can return to the owner. or a ring of 3 wishes. ;)"
<OOC> Kaj says, "oh wait, we're not 9 and we're not playing AD&D ;)"
<OOC> Terewin shrugs, is fine just having dealt with the badgers.
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Kaj, if you don't mind being puppeteered, we could assume the whole party is interrogating using you as a mouthpiece and translator?"
<OOC> Kaj says, "of course. GO ahead. I gotta go."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Ciao, thanks for the RP!"
<OOC> Kaj says, "do as you will with me, anything short of death is fine."
<OOC> Kaj hugs, "Thanks."
Kaj has disconnected.

(Kaj) ties up the last badger instead, and cures some of its wounds. It's still going to die, but it'll take a bit longer. But as the half-giant begins to speak to it, it's clear that this is no normal beast --- it doesn't seem to possess the ability to talk /any/ language, even to its comrades. Its guttural barks and yelps aren't even intelligible to Kaj, let alone Terewin and Bennet.

Bennet has no desire to see any creature in pain. Is quite willing to heal the beast, then slit it's throat when the talking is done.

The beast dispatched, the trio collect the remains of the deceased badger hound and return to Malfor's farm. Nobody's visible, but there are lights coming from the fortified farmhouse.

<OOC> Terewin says, "Alrighty, unless theres anything else I have more work things to attend to."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "No, I'll just pose out."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Many thanks everyone. As always, let me know if you have comments/suggestions/queries. I'm going to run a (better) follow-up plot in a few weeks time, so look out for said."

The bones returned, Malfor nods grimly, and invites you inside to stay. "It's parkeh out," he tells you. "Bit o't danger too, like. Doan't be trav'llin' back t't Big Smoke tonight, lads. Stay f't stew."

You do, and it's delicious, and as you tell Malfor what you found, he nods grimly. "Right, lads," he says. "What wit' that, 'nd t'other deaths abaht --- I reckons it's abaht time yu's got t't bottom of this..."
