  • Title: Bandits! - Swamp edition
  • Emitter: Dax
  • Characters: Drue Level 2, Darius Level 2, Isilwen Level 2, Felicia Level 5
  • Place: Out past the river in swamplands
  • Time: Aug 25, 2018
  • Summary: This is the continuation, the awe inspiringly developed, next tier extravaganza of the bandits in the woods' attempts to take over the city's trade routes. In particular, those who were in the previous Bandit plot failed to take down all of the bandits, and one of them got away. An orc mystic who traveled into some swamp lands and has disappeared. It has been a few weeks, and now some traveling merchants have been assailed by horrible creatures that they do not live to talk about. Though wagons are covered in icky sticky messes, and all their goods are gone. It has escalated in the last few days and only YOU can stop them... along with a few others.

Although this plot is like my previous ones, it will primarily be involving combat and working through the system. It is my last system-oriented plot, and will start the foundation of my future series of plots. Be there at the beginning, get involved, and be kind to your web-footed friends... for they might be part of this Bandit group!

  • APL: 4
  • Encounter 1: 4 Bogwiggles CR1, 1 Orc Mystic CR 2

The adventurer's guild has done it again. Posted some signs up and asked for adventurer's to show up and do what the city guard is unable to do... go off into the middle of the wilderness and risk dying in exchange for gold. In the last few weeks there were some signs of bandits showing up, at first it was some Goblin riff-raffs that seemed unconnected, but then some goblin merchandise was found later on these orc bandits that were attacking wagons on a trade route. During that encounter an wise, smart, and beautiful (or at least she thinks so) Orc Mystic escaped from the adventurers and ran off.

Then all was quiet. At least until a few days ago. That's when wagons were attacked again, but this time there was some sticky icky mess left behind. And no bodies... just trails of blood. And of course, some pieces of materials, gear, etc along a path. Tracking this is not super difficult, and it led off into a swamp marshland where there's a poorly kept up floating plank bridge. The marshland itself is about 3 to 4 feet deep, so anyone around that height or shorter won't be able to wade through the swamp without holding thier breath but anyone else could (difficult terrain).

Felicia had heard things from the Temple of Serriel and made her way out to the swamp. Once she had her shield strapped to her forearm, she stood by a tree to wait for the rest of the group, if there was anyone coming. She also wasn't good at tracking, so she had to rely on others.

...What is he doing here? It's not that he thinks it's beneath him. He just... has no idea what he's doing out here. He's not really suited for such terrain, and has been -- probably unsuccessfully -- trying to keep to the less mucky areas. Not because he's especially concerned about his outfit, but so he won't get his feet caught in the mess. As much as he's not too terribly worried about the state of his clothes, trying to manage this mess with no boots is not something he wants to do.

Dax has partially disconnected.

Drue had just recently arrived and his first stop was the Adventurer's Guild to find work while he settles in. This task seemed to be well within his area of experience so the monk set off to meet up with the others that came out to make some gold. Dressed in dark grays and greens of loose fitting clothing that allows for silent and easy movement, the dark haired human smiles at the rest of the group as they start to form up. A polite nod is given to those nearby as he checks the locations of the various weapons strapped to his body and pack. "How long should we wait before we head off?" The question is asked to the whole of the group as he looks to those around him.

"We should have a couple more coming in, I think. Likely, at least one more. I'm Felicia, Vanguard of Serriel. I'll do my best to try to keep you all protected should things get hairy."

Darius has partially disconnected.

Drue has reconnected.

<OOC> Dax says, "After Darius's pose, everyone can roll perception. If you want to do Survival to pick up on the trail of this Orc bandit, feel free to do that as well."

<OOC> Darius says, "Be about 10 minutes or so, driving now"

<OOC> Dax says, "Okay! Feel free to Roll Perception now then. :)"

The swampland is pretty mucky. There's tall grass, buzzing mosquitos, and an assortment of other stingy looking insects that are annoying the party. Though none of it is a true threat, mostly just an annoyance, and the sounds that accompany forests of birds chirpring, water running, is replaced by that constant buzz of bugs zipping about your ears and the smell of stagnant water and mud. As the ground gives way to softer and softer land, turning into thick muddy water, someone has been kind enough to create a wooden plank path through the swampland. That plank path though is a bit old, and rocks somewhat on the marshlands. Not too unstable to walk on, but if someone were pushed or even slightly knocked off balance it might be tricky to stay on the platform.

Isilwen, and Drue notice in the muck off on the sides are some pieces of armor, there's a sword sort of bobbing up and down in the water, apparently it's wooden handle makes it float but due to the dark coloration of the water and the tall grass it's not very easily spotted. When the plank path splits, the litter that's being trailed behind seems to go left instead of right.

Everyone can hear off in the distance some deep resonating frog croaks that seem to echo oddly. They are still coming from a ways up but without having spotted the littered gear there'd of been no way of telling which direction to head.

Darius has connected.

<OOC> Darius says, "Ok, back on my main computer"

<OOC> Darius says, "Posing"

GAME: Darius rolls perception: (7)+0: 7

"Odd. The croaks from the frogs are echoing strangely." Felicia says softly.

Isilwen will be sticking to the plank path as much as possible, yes. When he sees the littered stuff, he points it out. Literally, pointing in that direction. "Look at that," he announces. "Why do you suppose that's there?" he wonders. It does head left, so he'll go that way too. Probably more curious than anything else. Felicia's observation gets a confused look. "They are?" He wouldn't have any way of knowing, since he doesn't know frog croaks all that well.

A tall muscular warrior wearing heavy banded mailed armor and a huge greatsword that's partially covered by his oversized black hooded cloak walks behind the group. Darius speaks in a low bass voice, "We're in the wilderness, there's always strange sounds..." He himself hears nothing out of the ordinary as he is definitely not a tracker, more the muscle and meat shield for the group in case of danger.

"Well met Felicia. I'm Drue, Monk of Daeus." There is a nod to the others to show he's introducing himself to them as well. The movement of the bobbing sword catches the amber gaze and Drue looks in that direction. "The worst fear would be an enemy that can breath in the water. That will pull you under and let you drown before eating you... Though, worse I guess would be if it fed on you while you lived..." There is a slight shake of his head as the monk pulls his three section staff from his pack to hold in his right hand, all three sections stacked to allow him to hold it without making noise. Following the group he moves lightly on his feet while trying to stay far from the water.

As the group is moving along the planks, the wood slightly sloshing against the thick stinky water below, there's an Orc wandering along. She's got a cloak on and the hood up over her head would make her not very noticeable as an orc if it were not that she was tall, braod in shape, and was constantly looking side to side. A light mist is bubbling up from the swamp itself as the water is getting warmed by the day's sun, and the Orc herself is not having a fun time squinting. Thus far she does not appear to have noticed the group. She does wave her left hand in a, 'come this way' sort of motion as she turns down another section of the plank bridge a few hundred feet ahead. (information coming to those who saw things)

Isilwen offers in introduction, "Please, call me 'Sil'." He's still going by that nickname to hide his identity. Not that anyone would really care, out this far. Still, better safe than splattered, right? Though he also frowns in Drue's direction at the mention of being pulled under the water. "...I'm sure we all needed to hear that, yes." And yes, he's being sarcastic. Once he sees the Orc, though, he pauses. He might not actually be able to see it's an Orc, or a female. But if it seems the figure hasn't noticed them, but it's still making 'come on' gestures, it's not hard to figure out that it's probably to someone else. "Oh, maybe that one's found someone else?" he wonders to whoever happens to be closer to him. Danger? Nah, that doesn't figure into Sil's mind.

Felicia tilts her head at the Oruch. "Strange, that is." She then takes a deep breath. "Should we go over and talk to it?"

Darius shields his eyes, but the sun glints off the uncovered part of his armor enough to blind him slightly with the glare, and therefore he can only see a shadow ahead that is vaguely humanoid-like. He says then, "We know the bandits are near, I suggest we keep our distance in case this is a poor excuse for an ambush.

<OOC> Felicia says, "brb. I need to shower."

With the three section staff held in his left hand, Drue moves along easily on the planks over the stinky water. He sniffs at the air as they move as if checking for anything out of the norm over the smells of the swamp. Looking towards the orc his gaze moves next to two separate spots and he frowns. Squinting a bit he frowns more and then whispers softly to the group, "She, it... there are frogs too... giant mouthed, teeth, metal in the mouth. Not good." Looking to the others he looks back, "I'm guessing they could swallow us whole." Fighting back a smile he looks to the staff in his hand while tilting his head side to side as if in thought over if its the best weapon. "So the hooded figure, two giant and toothed frogs with metal in their mouth's... Maybe armored warriors or bandits... I say we get dry ground under us and then figure out if they are friend or foe."

<OOC> Felicia will be a bit longer, as I need to get dinner now.

<OOC> Dax says, "Okay, if we are in combat when you get back, you can just roll in on your next pass."

<OOC> Darius guesses he'll be last seeing as he's the one who's the least stealthy

<OOC> Darius says, "Probably at least 15' from the 2nd to last person"

The group gets into stealth mode. And starts following along, albeit now at a slower rate than they were before. Thankfully for those with good eyes they can still follow along with the armor and weapon bits that are being left by the frogs that Drue pointed out. There's a lot of metal bits here and there, and the mud, more than water, is so thick that even metal gauntlets and such are able to float on top of it. You are seemingly following the Orc successfully for a few minutes, turning this way and that. At one point the Orc takes a right, then another left branch, and then turns back right. The swampland is getting thicker though, and the muddy water still present.

After a few more minutes of following you can see up ahead that there's a boat, and that's when the Orc starts picking up her pace, she's not flat out running yet, but she's moving faster toward the boat itself. It looks tied up so it hasn't floated away but that's where she's headed, now looking back over her shoulder, maybe having heard some of that clanking of Darius's.

<OOC> Dax says, "Alright! So. You guys will have 2 rounds of non-combat activities before you get into combat range/capacity. As in, before you get onto the +tmap."

Isilwen stays back, not wanting to be seen after Drue's warning. Giant frogs? Metal bits? Getting swallowed whole?! No, that doesn't sound like something he really wants to do. So he keeps it quiet. But then the figure looks back, and Isilwen freezes, looking for a place to hide. Surely there have to be places to hide. Or at least, behind one of the others so he doesn't make it obviously apparent that he's there...

Round One - Init 21.

It is now Swamp Frog1's turn! Drue is next!

<OOC> Dax says, "Drue, since Frog 1 did not see you, it's moving, to go after Darius, so you can attack of opportunity it if you'd like."

<OOC> Drue says, "Sounds good. I have a weapon, I am a monk, I have flurry of blows and stunning fist and power attach... >.>"

<OOC> Drue says, "Attack, not attach"

<OOC> Drue says, "Can I try stunning fist on the thing?"

<OOC> Dax says, "I don't see where you can't attempt a stunning fist as an AoO, so go ahead. Make an attack roll!"

<OOC> Dax says, "The frog remains unstunned, but you do hit it pretty hard as it's moving. Go ahead and pose your attack of opportunity. Now it's attack against Darius."

<OOC> Drue poses!

<OOC> Dax says, "I did not mean to roll my init, ignore that."

GAME: Dax rolls 1d20-1: (8)+-1: 7

Moving silently with his three part staff in his left hand, Drue sneaks closer to one of the large frog creatures. The mix of colors and his skill in stealth movements gets the monk up close as the frog moves towards Darius. Figuring it is going to attack the other member of his party the Monk strikes hard from hiding with a stunning fist attack. The punch hits hard, harming the frog but not stuffing the creature.

The giant frog starts moving through the mud, with ease! And it was completely unaware of Drue before it started to move. And then a fist comes at it, punching it in the skull, but it already had plans to attack Darius. And when the big frog rises up from the water, it's the height of a goblin and has a mouth large enough to swallow a goblin whole, and there's TEETH lining it's mouth. A thick, giant tongue comes stretching out 10 feet, and flaps about against Darius who easily avoids it,before it snaps back inte AoOs."

<OOC> Dax says, "She's trying."

<OOC> Drue says, "Oh she's far"

<OOC> Drue says, "We need a hold spell, or grease or something :)"

Round Three - Init 12.

It is now Orc Mystic's turn! Swamp Frog4 is next!

The Orc Mystic is being swiped at from the Spiritual Weapon and it actually hit her! She growls and keeps just untying the boat, managing to release it before attempting to jump into the boat to get away from this horrible weapon and push herself with the stick to safety... just make the jump!

GAME: Dax rolls 1d20+2: (13)+2: 15

Drue growls at feeling that tongue stick to him and with a vicious swipe of his three part staff he smashes the tongue hard enough to knock it loose. Freed from the sticky length of slick muscle he turns and moves to follow after the mystic.

She does, and manages to land in the boat, but has yet to push off.

Felicia bares her teeth at the Mystic trying to get away. "Not this time." The force lance tries to poke the mystic again, but this time Felicia fires a FRIGGIN LASER at the mystic....and it hits rather hard. "You really should surrender...."

The frogs are all over Drue. He was already in the mashlands and fighting on their turf, and then left to the bridge. But he's having no luck at all. Kung fu fighting gets you only so far, after the first tongue launches out and misses, another one launches out and sticks! That same frog, has really good aim.

Round Four - Init 12.

It is now Orc Mystic's turn! Swamp Frog4 is next!

Drue seeks to chase down the mystic but Felicia is doing a good job at keeping the mystic busy. Its good for them that Felicia is able too because the monk gets hit by the same giant frog's tongue. Turning he attacks with a flurry of attacks but is unable to hit the frog.

The Orc Mystic is singed, on the boat, hasn't pushed off yet and she moves the horn to her lips, blowing it loud. It creates an almost supernaturally loud sound that reverberates through the swamp land. And then the Orc holds up her hands, snarling in the direction of Felicia, "I ... give up... but... the frogs do not listen... to me." She gets out in broken Tradespeak, her flesh is mostly burned and she's eyeing the Spiritual weapon, she doesn't do anything else though... for the moment.

The staff twirls and whistles through the air as he rains a flurry of blows against the frog and its tongue to free himself and smash the giant creature until its dead. Turning he lashes out at the other frog but misses.

Drue swings at the remaining frog, twice and is unable to get any good hits in on the thick hide of the creature.

The Orc Mystic stays standing where she is watching as the Adventurers are killing her frogs and she is still quite singed, nearly dead, and still has the audacity to glare at them. "You shall die, I swear it. When the others find out that you have me. If you kill me now, their rage will be unparalleled. You do not know what you are doing!" She laughs, and then coughs, and blood and burnt stuff comes out of her mouth.

GAME: Dax advances the initiative order.

"if we killed you, it would compromise everything I've trained for as a cleric. Now if you attack again, I will kill you, but....I will gladly take you as a prisoner. Felicia touches her medallion and mends her own and Drue's wounds.

The last remaining frog has just stuck it's tongue to Drue and the Orc Mystic seems to be giving up and the boat she was going to get away on is slowly drifting away.

Darius was literally under the spell of the orc, and once it retreats, is able to control himself once more. He mutters darkly, "Damned mages!", before he focuses on the frog and roars a battlecry, rushing past Felicia who he was forced to slash and with a sweep of his greatsword, turns the frog into frog legs and gizzards and bloody chunks.
