  • Title: A Few More things from Am'shere
  • Emitter: Cryosanthia
  • Characters: Jinks, Aryia, Randolf
  • Place: WA02: Am'shere
  • Time: Wednesday, November 24, 2021, 9:32 PM
  • Summary: The Mictlan Nest-Mothers-to-be need a few more things from Am'shere. As luck would have it, some of the items are reagents needed by the Temples. This time softskins are sent! They don't like Am'shere but Am'shere likes them. Within moments of arriving a bellyborer beetle is attempting to burrow through Randolf's beard to get to his spine. Aryia finishes it off. They're told they have attractive scents, which Randolf prestidigitates his away, while Jinks and Aryia cover themselves in stickywood sap. They also harvest the stickywood. Next up, the Stranglevine tree, which they attempt to sneak up on. It hooks Randolf up into the air, twice. He's rescued both times by Aryia, who drops him down. Finally she rips enough vines free it stops attacking them. They retreat. The last thing needed are some eggs. All head further down the path into the jungle, where a Quetzalcoatlus is nest is located. The mother flies overhead. Aryia distracts the dinosaur while Jinks and Randolf sneak up and snatch eggs. The flying dinosaur and mul'niessa are unable to damage each other, and the nest-thieves are successful. The party checks off the last item on their list and returns.

Am'shere

The expectant Nest-Mothers of Mictlan had some additional requests for a few more things from Am'shere. As luck, or efficiency would have it, a couple of the requests aligned with items the Temples were seeking.

For... whatever the Temples are planning.

The list is relatively short, some Stickywood, more stanglervines or bearded moss, and eggs. The eggs are more symbolic than necessary, and while morbid eating the unhatched young of species that predates your own has a practical value on top of the philosophical one. It's 'good luck', and anything that calms the anxious expectant ones is desired.

The Temples want the eggs too.

Cryosanthia was a little too stressed to pass on any useful advice, beyond, "Ash the Shamans on the other side, and don't separate," before getting back to social management.

Stepping through the portal, Am'shere hits like sauna where the water has just been dumped on the hot-rocks. There's a loud hum of life, insects mostly, interrupted by calls of hunting creatures. A humidity that insantly dampens hair and clothes, a lot of smells.

And heat. It's hot. So hot.

Aryia said she'd help out.

Shit, that look Lily gave her was really start to bite her in the ass now, wasn't it?

A scarred mul'neissa steps through the portal, her hit with the humidity and heat. Stunned. Not only was it odd for a mul'neissa to be here, it was doubly so since she, well, couldn't communicate for worth a crap with any of the makari.

She slips free from her long sleeved shirt, tucks her tank top into her waistband, and ties her shirt sleeves around her waist. Leather cords wrap around her arms, and she cracks her knuckles. This... shouldn't be so bad, right?

.... right?

Randolf steps through the portal, and immediately begins to regret his life choices. "Oh, Reos' bloody blue -balls-, this -heat-," he grumbles, immediately breaking a sweat. He flaps the lapel of his robe, to no avail--the humidity is just too thick. His beard is a frizzy, poofy mess in a matter of minutes, his face red and pouring sweat. "Let's find what we're after an' get the hell out o' here, afore I melt intae goo!" He glances around. "Some vines, some moss, an' some eggs... that's it, right?"

"Mulria's sideways smile..." Jinks coughs, stepping out the other side of the portal into a veritable wall of humidity. The gnome's features were pale and drawn arriving for the job; a sheen of sweat makes him look borderline feverish. He unbuttons the straight collar of his doublet and looses the top strap, folding down the outer corner and snapping it into place. That offers little in the way of reprieve but it'll have to do.

"I already like the Jade Islands more..." he mutters, trying to remain casual as he looks between a community of folk his people have spent generations at war with. Jinks debates a disguise but takes the time to polish a new frolicking-coyote pin decorating the left breast of his studded armor. A bit of luck should do.

"Ssssssss." A green-scale Sith'Makar intercepts the group. Trailing behind is a second, also green, but darker in scale with a bith more browns. The first continues, "You are. Ssoftskinss."

He's looking at Jinks, primarily Jinks.

His head raises lugubriously to gaze at Aryia next. There's a bobbing motion, his nostrils flare, a tongue flicks out and tastes the air near the Mul'niessa. "You are. Assscepted. Welcome to... Am'ssshere."

He steps back, making several spell castings. Exactly what is unclear, though both sides of the portals are managed by the druids to make sure nothing invasive gets through. The assistance makes similar motions.

Finishing, the Shaman bows and steps back out of the way. "Are you sschooled. In expectationsss?"

There's a buzzing that's slightly larger than normal. A fist sized beetle pops out of the jungle, passes a jungle-guard and flies straight towards Randolf.

"Do not. Let that bite." The shaman advises.

Aryia gives the shaman a weird look as she's basically smelled. *Again.* A sigh leaves her, and the mute shakes her head to answer the question, but catches the movement just as the makari points out the bug.

The pugilist simply strides up, cocks her foot back, and punts it back into the jungles. Hard. It probably smushes against a tree deeper in.

"Done," she motions to the shaman. <Handspeech>

The Shaman's assistance comes over, and casts another spell that cleans the beetle gore off of Aryia. "It carriesss disease. Lays eggs in the spine."

He looks at the elaborately frizzing hairstyles of everyone present, "Likesss hair."

"Mosst thingss will sssmell you." The Shaman advises, "New ssmells. They will come to attacks." He turns and gestures to the cleared area in front of the portal, with the guards lining the edges. "That way. Ssstrangleviness. It hass. Pheremoness. Confusse. That way. Mangoss."

His head turns towards Randolf, "Eggsss. There are. Nessstss of beassts, south of the paths." He points eastwards, where the clearing crowds in to a living tunnel.

Randolf gapes as that great beetle comes coming at them--only to suffer a lethal case of boot to the head, courtesy of Ariya. He looks up at the shaman, turning white as milk at that warning. "They nest in -hair-...?" He puts a protective hand over his beard, swallowing hard. "Och, o' -course- they do. Silly o' me tae ask," he grumbles. He glances around the jungle, gripping his wand in a white-knuckled fist. "Let's get this done, friends. I'm goin' tae need tae go on a -massive- bender after -this- one."

Jinks had sucked in a deep breath that he just lets fall out of him as a sigh. If everything goes this smoothly maybe he'll have a fond memory or two of Am'shere in his back pocket after all. He turns to look in each direction indicated as they are, wiping his forehead and blinking away sweat somewhere in between stranglevines and eggs. A bump of the hips and he's cinching the lower strap of his pack to get some of the weight off his shoulders.

"Acquire the goods in order of reverse fragility? Vines, mangos, then eggs? Maybe a few exra mangos..." His stomach growls. He's probably forgotten to eat. A forearm comes up to cover his mouth as he offers a bit of a belch. Then, to he shaman, "Anything to help cover our scent? Incense or smoke or the like?"

Aryia shakes her head. "Sticky wood," she corrects. "Bearded moss or strangle vine, sticky wood, and eggs." She's been paying attention to Cryo's ramblings as of late.<Handspeech>

"There isss. Rubber tree." The Shaman points at a plant at the edge of the jungle. "sssap will dissguise. Ssscentsss."

And do terrible things to hair.

Randolf just... stares... at that rubber tree. "Aye, what about incense?" he asks. "Would -that- help? I mean... I dinnae -have- any incense on me. But I got me pipe. That'd do, I'll warrant."

"Incenssse. Might work. Might attract. New. Sscentss." The Shaman advises.

Randolf .... "-Fuck-."

Jinks just gives Aryia a look and blinks slowly. The cogs take a moment to turn before he offers a simple, "oh, right" at the correction. He nods and pinches the bridge of his nose hard, lifting his hand from there to wipe away the sweat as he starts towards the indicated tree. He doesn't even argue about smearing tree blood into his perfect little ponytail. "I have a ditty bag," he offers unprovoked, glancing back at the others. "For carrying things. It's not overly big; an itty-bitty ditty bag." He smirks and gives a queer little laugh. Jinks pages: Haha, I was kidding. Because of the Survival roll.

Aryia groans silently. She removes her shirt off her waist, stuffs it into her bag, and replaces it with her jacket. She whispers to it under her breath, 'you better get clean after this...!'

She ambles towards it, grabs a rag from her bag, and gets as much of the gunk onto the rag as possible.

She snorts at Jinks, rolls her eyes, then does the grueling process of getting the sap all over herself.

Bathhouse bathhouse bathhouse bathhouse bathhouse.

"This sticky wood?" she asks aloud with a hand. Hopefully one of the sith knew what the hell she was saying. <Handspeech>

"Yessss." The Shaman hisses, "It isss. For nessstsss." He glances at Jinks, "ssmall ssoftskinsss want it alssso."

Stranglervines might be unpleasant.

Randolf shakes his head slowly. "I... am -not- puttin' that shit all over me. It'd rip me skin tae shreds comin' off!" He rubs the back of his head, scowling dourly, then snaps his fingers. He lifts his wand and gives a flick. "Re ex re io prestos!" He flicks again, and a shower of silver-blue sparkles rains down all over him. Prestidigitation is good for many things--including flavoring and scenting things. Or, in -this- particular case, -un-scenting things. Or one (1) sweaty dwarf.

Aryia motions to the shaman, her arms sticking to her sides as she tries to move them. At least she could be understood. Despite the massive frown on her face. "Anything aside from the smell thing with the strange vines we need to worry about?" <Handspeech>

"It sstrangless. Pullsss up. Into air." The Shaman makes a rapid upwards jerk, "attractss bugs. Sssmart plant."

In no time at al, Jinks and Aryia are covered in sap, and Randolf is de-scented magically.

Randolf gives the stranglervines a dour scowl. "An' let me guess. We cannae just -burn- the bloody thing, can we? We need the whole vines."

Jinks does a decent job stickying himself up but doesn't go overboard. That done, he tries to retrieve the ditty bag from his larger pack without removing it. This results in an awkward, circular spin of a dance. He finally manages to brace against the tree and twist his shoulder enough to pluck the thing from a securing loop and shake it out. He tries to toss the bag to Aryia but it's stuck to his gloves now. So he shakes it out. His expression is tired and nonplussed as he glares at the bag dangling from the sap smearing his gloves. He blinks, shaking his head, and then bends over to step on the bag and pull his hand free.

"Finally," sighs the frustrated gnome... before he bends over and picks the bag right up again to break off and put some of the stickywood inside. He stifles a yawn through the process.

Another fist-sized beetle buzzes out of the jungle. All the near sith warriors turn to watch it. It meanders, as if sensing or searching for something, before buzzing back into the trees.

"No. Tree issss. Trade goodss. Nesst Motherss, need. It isss, allowed to sstay." The Shaman answers Randolf.

The pugilist snatches the tossed bag out of the air and affixes it to her hip. A finger gun is snapped towards him, and an up-nod in appreciation.

She rubs her neck at the thought of the vines wrapping around it. She shudders, and shakes her head. Right.

The elf steps towards the direction indicated where the tree was. "Let's get this done. After that, we can get the eggs, then grab the sticky wood one the way out." <Handspeech>

"Pheremonessss." He points at his nostrils, emphasizing them. He sniffs Jinks this time. "Better."

Randolf scowls up at the stranglervine tree. "Aye, but... how do we get those vines wi'out gettin' snatched ourselves?" He tugs at his beard, considering his options. "No, that'd just set it on fire. No... that won't work either. Hrrm... -damn- it. Why does everything have tae be so bloody hard?"

Aryia blinks, scrapes some of the sap off herself, and shoves it into her nose.

This was going to be a horrible return trip.

"Burn off vine near stump, pull vine off," she suggests, even if Randolf couldn't understand her. <Handspeech>

Ugh, now she was mouth-breathing.

"The mul' has to get close," Jinks tells Randolf, half-distracted by putting his gloved fingertips together and struggling to pull them apart. He falls into step heading towards the grabby-vines. "I imagine she'll be tough to snag just by merit of her physical aptitude. I can grease her... though I can't imagine how that'll interact with the sap..." His narrow white eyebrows push together as the gnome frowns in thought. He glances at Aryia and then at Randolf and offers a shallow shrug.

"Coyote laughs," he finally decides.

The Stranglervine Tree is barely visible from the clearing. It helps that it is taller than the surrounding jungle. It's clear which tree it is, as vines hang from it's wide branches, the ends of which all seem to naturally curl into something that resembles a noose.

The branches themselves, are older, thicker vines that have developed over the years, and parasite on the nearby trees by spreading over their canopoies. There are a lot of vines, both of this tree and other sorts, that opportunistically fill the space.

There are bodies, hanging from those nooses as well. Bodies which rot quickly in the humidity, eventually liquefying enough to fall down to the floor where they feed the roots.

Presumably.

Randolf glances around at the others. "Right... so... sneak up on the thing an' snatch a vine. Simple, right?" He looks back up at the stranglervine tree, puffing up his burly chest and giving the lapels of his robe a tug. He hunkers down low to the ground--an easy feat, given his stature--and starts creeping forward. All goes well as he approaches the tree. He looks like he's gonna make it! But then... 'SCHLORP'. "GYAHH!" His right foot sinks to the shin in soupy mud. He hauls back, grunting and growling as he heaves his foot free. SCHLURRRP! "Piss an' blood an' flamin' -shit-, I swear tae fuckin' -Reos-, I--" He cuts off, then--remembering that he was supposed to be -sneaking-. He slooooowly looks up at the tree with wide eyes. "Eep."

<OOC> Aryia uses Barkskin. +4 AC. sneaks to 21,-4

Was... that a compliment from Jinks? She couldn't help but puff out her chest in pride some as her ego was stroked. That certainly never happens often. She nods along, and flexes her muscled arms. She's kinda ripped for an elf. Randolf's seen her in action, and she certainly has to get right in on the action to do anything.

She pauses for a moment, focuses, and cracks her neck once more with a healthy >crunch<.

"Ready."

The mute melds into the underbrush, leaving behind trails of sap from the leaves that brush against her. Her eyes glow bright in the undershadows, them swinging around to see anything lurking.

An idle thought gains some insight. She could kind of see why the makari liked this place so much. There was a low ebb of adrenaline coursing through her.

Jinks' eyelids flutter as he makes his way through the brush, their heaviness partnering with the forced blinking as stingy sweat falls into his onyx-black eyes. Tarien seems to grant a boon after the gnome's oath, however, and the sleep-deprived fool flounders his way perfectly through the congested jungle. He trips over an arcing root resulting in a hop over the forsaken, brittle bones of some native quadruped stripped of all meats. The gnome then stops to kneel and stifle a yawn, face cupped in silent contortions as a hatchling quetzalcoatlus tears overhead-- to where it would've collided with him just a moment before-- before disappearing back up through the canopy.

Finally, he stops and sighs, rubbing his eyes somehow having arrived next to Aryia unnoticed.

Squish. Squelch. Slurrrrp. Squish. Clrrrrrch.

The dward may be scent-less, but it's easy to tell where he is at every moment. Muddy water wells up around his feet, vines catch at them, tripping him. Plus, there's the swearing...

Him falling in...

The Mul'niessa is more one with the jungle. Despite how alien an experience it is for her, the principles of stealth are the same. Step carefully, test the surface, don't disturb.

If the mul'niessa melds with the Jungle, the gnome seems born to it. He vanishes. He disturbs nothing. He is unseen.

That tree is a lot bigger than it looked from the clearing.

How hard it be to sneak up on a tree though?

There's a rustle of leaves, a silent puff of a mass of pollen, which filters down and wafts everywhere on the still jungle air. It sticks to everything.

As vines add to the muddy mix around his feet, he windmills his arms and topples over. SPLAT! "GYAH!" Now he's -spitting- mad, fumbling his way back to his feet. He looks up at the tree ahead with a furious scowl. "This shit is -never- goin' tae scrub off! Och, where -is- this stranglervine bastard anyway? I'm half a mind tae just torch it an' have done with it!" It seems that the pollen has managed to wend its way past his natural dwarven fortitude and has fuddled his senses. He can't see the stranglervine for the trees. Or perhaps -because- of the trees. It's hard to say, really.

There's rustling, the vines are entangling.

The dwarf feels himself helped to his feet. A friendly vine is supporting him, pulling him out of the jungle floor.

A good fifteen feet up in the air. The water won't threaten him at all. The vine makes an effort to calm him, circling around his throat.

Aryia's vision goes a bit hazy as a smell creeps into her nose through her mouth. She coughs a bit, and shakes her head to keep it on straight. Woefully unaware of how close Jinks was, her eyes widen as the dwarven wizard was taken to the skies.

She felt the pools align, and a trail of faded after images zip through the air and latch onto an overhanging branch. She swings a bit, her latching onto him with her legs to keep him still and from swinging about. Her only free hand reaches out, twists and pops the vine off his neck.

Aaand he falls. She winces.

"S-rr-..!" comes from above in a hiss, the mul'neissa dangling free from a branch with one hand.

<OOC> Jinks says, "Pretty sure I'm just double-moving towards the tree, ye?, So 26,-3"

Jinks blinks, rubbing a forearm across his eyes and then giving a yelp when the sap takes bits of his eyebrows and lashes. He squints and shakes his head only to squint harder. He'd never heard of a gnomess-dryad before. He'd even met a dryad once, years ago, and she had those awkward, ungainly longlegs of a tallman ruining what had been an otherwise appealing curvaceous figure. But here he was-- and just looking at him the gnome could tell the dryad was knotty.

Slouching forward, Jinks approaches and raises a hand to wave. He pauses, frowning, and looks at his fingertips. He pokes one and flinches back, squinting his eyes shut and swearing in gnomish. He blinks and shakes his hands out, fingernails tearing up around his fingereyes. Wait. Do what now? Best not to worry about it. He continues forward.

Randolf harrumphs, trying to shake the mud off his hands and scrape it off his rump. "By me father's bloody beard, I swear--hurrkkk!!" He's cut off mid-grumble by a vine snapping around his neck. Whoosh! He's plucked up into the air. His eyes bug out and his face goes red as he scrabbles at his neck, his stumpy legs kicking wildly. "GLUURRKKGH!"

One hand reaches down to fish wildly at his hip, trying to get his axe off his belt. But before he can do anything, there's Ariya, ki-stepping up to his level. "GWLLLF!" He suddenly finds himself locked in a scissor-kick--but he's not one to look a gift mul'niessa in the mouth, as she deftly unloops the vine from his neck. "GAHHH!" He sucks in an explosive breath. "Thank Reos, lassie I HYAAAAAAAGH!" Alas, his thanks are short-lived, as he plungs back to the muddy jungle floor. SPLORCH! "Owwwww..."

Aryia frowns in annoyance as Randolf is recaptured once more. Come on, this was supposed to be a simple shopping trip. A whip to the side makes the elf hiss at the tree. Evoking bad memories from her.

She pivots around on the branch, holds herself up by a leg held over it and throws a straightforward haymaker that shouldn't do anything against a pliable vine. But, instead, xylem burst into a watery spray. Both hands grab the vine, she pulls it in and shoves her foot through it, snapping it like an underfoot branch.

Which, her branch too, snaps underfoot. And both go tumbling down.

She lands on her feet, huffing. "G-t -t -f h-r-," she hisses to the wizard, her eyeing the vine nearby.

Randolf once again goes tumbling, landing back in the mud with a resounding SPLAT. Only this one is accompanied by a sickening CRUNCH. "HYAAAGH!" His teeth grind as his face twists in agony, and he clutches at his hip. That's going to need some attention from a cleric.

Randolf's sputtering, swearing, and splashing (the three S's) finally snap Jinks out of his beguiled state. No, that's wrong; his fingers don't have eyes. There are no such thing as gnome-dryads. He gapes and bends backwards, look up and around at the hanging predatory vines. Then down at his feet in the thick, wet brush.

Shaking his head, the gnome falls into a backwards roll and then springs up, vaulting with both hands finding a rotten stump as he kicks his feet out and ducks his head beneath a grasping bit of vegetation. It was a lot of work for not-much progress but at least he's further back and aware of the danger all around now.

Vines rustle, there is motion in the canopies. The tree doesn't attack, not right now.

Randolf heaves to his feet, sucking a hissing breath through his teeth. Ariya is, in his mind at this moment, a bloody genius. They do, indeed, need to get out of here. He manages to hobble his way away from the tree, grunting and snarling with every step he takes. He focuses on putting one foot before the other, putting distance between himself and the Death Tree.

The pugilist's shining eyes are wide as she darts them around, looking for another vine. There is a flick towards Jinks as he tumbles backwards. The hell? She thought he was closer?

Nevermind that, she swoops down with her eyes peeled, grabbing the ripped vine and wrapping it around her torso, shoulder to hip as she keeps her fists raised, watching carefully for any other things coming down on them as she covers the wizard's, and, inadvertently, Jinks' by being so close to it.

It may be clear now that Randolf has earned his spot as 'approved mages'.

Aryia nod and looks at checklist. "Now we just gotta get eggs and get the heck out." <handsign>

There is rustling, the tree is disturbed and aware of presences. Nothing lashes out at Aryia, and Jinks seems to have escaped both notice and attack.

Perhaps it is a pretty gnomess-dryad at heart. Only one way to find out, which a wise gnome wouldn't.

The jungle continues to chitter, squeak, squeal, and drip.

Tired to begin with and now on the low-end of a quick trip, Jinks pants as sweat drips with a marked rapidity from his nose and chin. He pushes himself back up to his feet with a grunt using the stump he'd just jumped behind for leverage. There's a leaden weight in his legs but he takes the straps of his pack in his hands, leans forward, and starts pushing his way through the thick undergrowth to rejoin the other two.

"Usually have to pay a substantial amount of crowns for that sort of Vision," the gnome tries to joke without the mirth in his voice.

Jinks sighs, standing straight as he comes nearer the pair. An eye closes and his eyes dart back and forth beneath his lids. Looking at the Khazad he sings a sweet song in his gnative Gnomish. His hands push through the air and he finds the thread of the Weave. Pulling down and across he waves a loose fist past Randolf's throat. Reality sorts itself, replacing the battered neck with a mildly-abused one.

Randolf's eyes widen, and he almost melts with relief as Jinks' healing magic takes hold. "Ohh -gods-... -bless- you, laddie," he groans. He rubs his hip, finding his stride much improved. "I don't know if I can afford enough booze fer the bender -I'm- plannin', but damned if I'm nae goin' tae try! An' you two're invited!"

Aryia could very easily bounce out of here and save her own hide. But she keeps her breathing steady. Her stride smooth. And the sap... yep, it's still sticky. She could feel her hair glued to her neck. Ugh.

But, those were menial concerns. She had bigger things to worry about. Like Randolf and Jinks getting to the clearing.

She breaches the clearing with her back to the warrior-caste guarding the portal, her hands still raised and her eyes narrowed. A lovely line of bruising was showing up on her arm.

"... fuck me, and now we just have to get the damn eggs and get the fuck out of here," she relays, her brows pinched.

She glances to Jinks. Vision? What vision? It's clear she didn't have the same experience. But her visage relaxes some as she sees him heal the Khazad gets some relief and life back into him. She gives a smile to Randolf, and nods. Yeah, she'd be in on going for a bender. Thanks for the invitation. <Handspeech>

A Jungle-Watcher nearest to the emerging mul'niessa looks her way, sniffs, then inhales vigorously. His? Her? Might be a her. Her pupils spread, half as wide as her eyes and she makes a happy trilling noise.

Another Jungle-Watcher comes close, to sniff the pollen that covers the trio. It seems the lizards would agree with Jinks, their shift just got a lot better.

"The tree isss. Not ssafe." The Shaman nods sagely, looking at the scratches and the damage. Nods more as he examines the vines wrapped around Aryia, "Good."

The eggs are located a little down the path, south of the path.

Aryia pauses, scowls heavily, and takes an aggressive step forward, jabbing a finger towards one of the more smell happy makari. "If someone sniffs me one more fucking time I'm going to jam these vines up your nose. I'm not a fucking *dog*!" <Handspeech>

She is not sniffed again.

She is licked.

Licking the pollen produces a much stronger hallucination.

The lick is riposted with a palm on the snout. A dull thunk could be heard, and she shoves them off. "Fuck with me again and I'm breaking teeth," she threatens. <Handspeech>

'What sort of eggs are these we're after?' Jinks finally thinks to ask. He pulls a release strap and catches the shortbow when it falls off the harness on his pack-- or tries to. He misses and the bow bounces to the ground. The gnome sighs and kneels, scooping up the weapon and issuing an odd little noise before standing again. He doesn't react to the invasion of space or the sniffing-- perhaps overcompensating in his desire to be diplomatic.

And then they're licking Aryia in an attempt to provoke her and the exhaustion gets the better of him. "Pretend like you have some gods-granted manners and realize that perfect strangers don't want your fat blue-tongues dragged over them. We're here to help one of your people and you're mistreating her. Dragonfather's fucking grace if I don't..." he loses the last bit in a snarl. <draconic>

"The pollen isss. Very valuable. When gathered properly." The shaman advises.

The be-booped-snoot sith'makar falls over backwards and stares upwards. She's watching the jungle. Being a decoy for the jungle. Anything coming out will trip over her or eat her.

It'll be fine.

"The eggss. You can sssneak up. On nesstsss. Much noisse. Nesst-Mother will come. Will be angry. Large. Fasst." He looks at Randolf, doesn't say anything.

GAME: Randolf rolls KNowledge/Nature: (16)+10: 26 (vs DC 10)

Randolf scowls dourly at the shaman and harrumphs. "Aye, well, I'm a wizard, not a rogue!" he grumbles. "Ye want someone tae go sneaky-sneak, find one o' them. -I- just know things."

It's a Quetzalcoatlus, big flying lizard, called a dragonling. A sort of pterosaur.

Randolf glances at Jinks and Ariya. "The eggs we're after belong tae a species o' flyin' reptile called a 'quetzalcoatlus'. Otherwise known as a 'dragonling'. They're big an' feisty, I'll warrant. So we'll have tae be extra careful."

Aryia, heated from all the makari invading her space, finally abates a bit as the Shaman gives some insight to offending folk. She exhales sharply, and flicks her fingers off, throwing shade onto the ground as she cracks her neck again.

She glances to Randolf, bobbing her head a bit as he gives the information out.

Jinks stomps off once the sith take the hint and back off. He drops the bow down and crouches, rubbing his face with both hands and issuing a shaking sigh. After taking the moment to collect himself and breath through the frustration and old, dark impulses, he stands and blinks red-rimmed eyes. "I can use the Hymn to hold the attention of most creatures. Or I can blind them with a spell." He looks down the path and clenches his teeth. Or we can just start murdering whatever isn't polite enough to cooperate. He shakes his head and decides it might be time for sleep after this-- the bender coming after some rest.

The jungle closes in on the eastern edge of the Portal clearing. It is more like a road. Not a proper paved one, or even a path with a solid foundation. Carts could not travel on this.

Typically, caravans, with the domesticated four-legged reptiles that the sith'makar use as beasts of burden make their way. They are large enough they're usually left alone, and the riders hack at the overhead vines, making a tunnel of sorts.

Water still wells up in certain places.

There is a nest, there is also the mother lizard nearby. Identified by the dwarf as a quetzalcoatlus, a terror of the swamp. A flying lizard with a forty foot wingspan. They can be trained as mounts, for the ambitious.

They are dangerous to tangle with, for the delicious.

She is off her nest, but not far away. Too much commotion or disturbance would draw her attention.

Randolf trundles along with Jinks and Ariya, holding his wand at the ready. He glances around hither and yon, looking for danger--mostly focusing on the vines and hanging greenery overhead. He has -no- desire to repeat -that- particular experience any time soon. "So how many eggs are we needin', anyway?" he mutters in a quiet tone. "Och, I really need tae start preparin' invisibility spells, if I'm goin' tae be doin' this sort o' bullshit on the regular."

Aryia gives Jinks a thankful nod with... whatever he said. She pats his shoulder, a sticky endeavor. But the meaning was still there. "... th-nks..." she hisses in that quiet way.

Once they get properly into the jungles, her eyes narrow. And she thinks....

"Randolf, can those creatures see in the dark?" she asks, looking between the small folk and the wizard. "If they can't, then maybe your hymn, I could throw shade onto the nest and grab stuff," she suggests as her steps slow, seeing the creature in the distnace. <Handspeech>

Jinks nods his head slowly and plucks a scroll from his pocket. "If it's the Hymn we need to start with that. If the creature is already provoked the song is far less likely to work." He lifts the gnome-sized scroll, rolling it between his fingers. "I can make sure I'm able to run faster if it's not a fan of music," he assures them.

Randolf glances furtively around again. With a scowl and harrumph, he decides to be pre-emptive. He furrows his brow in thought for a moment. "What was that command phrase again...?" he mutters. Tapping his wand against his palm a couple times, he gives it a quick flick. "Re ex re insu imagos negata!" A thin line of silver-blue light races down around his outline, then sweeps inward--taking him with it. The magical display fades, and of the dwarf--there is no sign. Other than the heavy boot-prints visible in the undergrowth. "Och, it -worked-! Hah!"

The quetzaalcoatlus flies above the canopy. She's distant. She's huge, but the jungle noises drown out the sound of her wings. Her flight is casual, patrolling, looking for something nice to eat.

Lazily she circles around, glides over the jungle road.

Tasty things show up on that road, often. Her head snaps towards the three strangers. tasty things have shown up now! She wings their way.

Her eyes roll back, then she quickly turns to the two- er, one? Maybe. She can still hear Randolf. "That thing is coming right at us. Go get the eggs, I'll keep them distracted!"

The mute runs forward into the road and waves at the big dino coming in. She bounces on her feet, and a bead of sweat rolls down her sappy neck. T-This should work, right...? <Handspeech>

Jinks mutters another curse, already panting when the big bird takes flight. He's nearing the end of his rope and having a hard time keeping a level head. A quick recitation of the scroll and he's moving faster than any normal-legged creature has a right to. Practically a blur, he speeds towards the brushline. Entering the dense, green cover, he disturbs yet another hatchling. This feathered reptilian craws angrily and bats at the gnome's sticky face as it takes to the air and cries for its matriarch.

There's a soft twinkle of magic, and the underbrush starts shuddering as he carefully starts picking his way through. Fortunately, the great flying lizard is focused on Ariya and doesn't spot him. "Oof. Ack. Ow. Ow! -Gah-! I love the dark. I love the dark. I -love- the dark! Urf! Gack! Oof! But I hate nature. If V was here, she's be so, so disapproving on this right now.

Jinks' eyes widen at the sight of the monstrosity circling overhead. It might not conjure the same, unholy terror the swamp wyrm did when it first passed overhead but he's quite certain this creature, too, could swallow him whole without any sort of effort. The gnome takes a pinch of the powder from his pouch and flicks it towards the gigantic thing, singing the notes that push it along the air in a tight spiral. The tiny pinch grows and glows before exploding in a sparkling pink mass across the bulk of the oversized airborne reptile. When the creature seems unfazed the gnome just grunts and dashes, forcing his way through the undergrowth as fast as he can go.

Randolf's eyes get wide as teacups as that giant reptile wings ever closer to him. Did it see him? He decides not to take the chance. Veering off the beaten path, he delves into the underbrush and starts shoving his way through, bulling his way ever closer to the nest. "Just keep flyin', just keep flyin'," he mutters under his breath as he goes. "Nothin' tae see here."

The quetzalcoatlus sees the mul'nessa heading for the edge of the path, where the jungle thickens. This will not help her. The giant flying lizard dips down, there's a rush of air over her leathery wings. Leaves are brushed, knocked free.

As she passes overhead, her long neck snakes down like a whip, tearing at Aryia. She misses, but carries on, climbing and turning.

Aryia throws herself forward into a roll as she is nipped at, dodging out of the way. She stumbles forward over brush and vine, and she takes a deep breath in. Light. Pull.

Erupting in a large radius around the mul'neissa is the outer edges of a solar eclipse, yet the light is that of the full moon. All the leaves are lit up and illuminated. Every shadow shoved away. And in the dead center was a beacon: a scarred mul'neissa.

This was such a fucking stupid idea.

Jinks has both arms up and in front of his face as he squints and dashes through the jungle. He steps in something that smells rotten and offers a wet squelch as innumerable crawly things scatter from his freshly-soiled boot. He accidentally kicks a small, furred rodent in his rush. He plows through a brush the sends up a thick, choking puff of brown-blue spores that smell sickeningly sweet and taste of rotten bananas. He gags and chokes but he makes it-- finally!-- to the unguarded nest of eggs.

...
... he hopes it's unguarded.

Randolf scurries through the undergrowth, grunting and growling that cuts off into a high-pitched 'heeek!' as something multi-legged drops down onto him from above and skitters off his shoulder. He -really- doesn't like spiders. He manages to make it to the nest, however, the underbrush rustling next to Jinks. "I'm here, lad!" he whispers harshly. There's a sound of rustling cloth as he slings his robe off his shoulders and spreads it out on the ground. The green linen becoming visible as it leaves his spell's influence. There's a soft grunt as one of the eggs tips and rolls onto the robe, followed by another. Then, another rustle of cloth as the hem is swept up and knotted together, then the sleeves tied to make a makeshift rucksack. The whole vanishes as the enrobed eggs get hefted up over his shoulder. "Ariya's doin' a bang-up job keepin' that thing busy. We should be able tae make a break fer it!" he grunts. "Head fer the portal, quick as ye can!" Turning, he goes to do that very thing, trundling his way through the undergrowth with his payload.

Aryia is running like mad through the jungle. Eye's glued to the canopy. Her bright beacon of celestial moonlight easily tracing a path that could be seen from above. She dives, dips, and leaps over everything she can. Leading the dino-bird away from its nest, and buying time for the two to grab what they can, and get out.

Some minutes later, the elf returns via a plethora of faded afterimages coming down the trail. The last one solidifing in front of the portal as the pugilist flails her arms to stop from toppling through. She's drenched in sweat, the sap half gone on her, and her posture slumped from fatigue.

The mute hands over Jinks' bag, the strangle vine shoved in it.

And she falls face first into the ground, completely spent. "... bleh..." she sputters.

Jinks kneels and shrugs off his pack next to the nest. He undoes a buckle and pulls out a blanket, a bedroll, a folded tent, another blanket, a traveling straw mattress. Is that a hammock? Well, he wants to be comfortable, apparently. He grabs an egg and eases it into the bottom of the pack, then stuffs the mattress around it and a blanket atop. Another egg goes atop that, now, and it's too full to close but should stay steady if he doesn't get too dramatic with his running. He slides back into the back and stands carefully only to take a knee and snag a third egg.

Eyes sunk and face waxen, he stands one more time with a long and steady groan. Then he sets out back through the jungle. It's not long at all before the spell fails and he's back to his old, slower self. This is going to take awhile.

It takes a while, but not too long.

The quetzalcoatlus keeps chasing the mul'niessa, distracted by her, attention held, never quite able to snap and draw blood. Never close enough to the ground or a tree for the monk to be able to hit her.

The gnome and the dwarf are long gone, successfully raiding her nest, by the time she loses track of the mul'niessa and returns.

Can dinosaurs count? Can she tell her nest is missing some eggs? Does it cause a fury in her primitive lizard brain, that egg-snatchers were successful?

This is not known, nor answered, nor relevant.

The Shaman and his assistant nod as the adventurers gather, then successfully travel back through the portal.

There will make some nest mothers very happy.

A Great Work

The Temple District has remained largely inaccessible to most people for some time now. The reasons why are still a mystery - in part. Efforts from the city's mercenary and merchant populations to collate the various requests and work to be done suggest that some great work of magic appears to be afoot. Whatever this magical work is, it requires considerable magical resources, frequently at great expense to the city, but the city appears to be unafraid to pay. High-ranking members from the Engineering Enclave, the Progressive Arcanists, and virtually all of the temples and their senior leadership appear to be working in concert on this with direct and high-level guidance from the city government. Whatever it is doesn't appear to be limited to just the Temple Circle, either, as many of these individuals have been seen coming and going to projects in a variety of the city's quarters on business.

One thing the city's merchants have taken note of - nobody in the city with a known association with the Guild of Explroers has any direct insight into the activities in progress.
