The party are assembled in the main room; all except for Ashes, who is still packing up the bones of Poppy's friends, with the ghost looking over her shoulder with an air of deep concern -- until the entire manse shook with the impact of... something, against the other side of the door to the laboratory.
There's a second solid impact, and the door rattles; a third, and it bows inwards. It holds, but for how much longer, who can say?
"OhmyGODSdon'tdie!" Lerethil scoops up as much stuff as she can manage from the table of treasures she's been putting together -- by liberally pushing it into her satchel, that seems to have more space on the inside than the outside -- and makes a run for the door back out.
Delilah's head turns to watch as the merchant makes a break for it, and sighs audibly. "At least she's out of the way," she comments, as she moves to take a spot behind Donna.
The door withstands another impact, and a loud... clattering can be heard from the other side, line a bunch of people gnashing their teeth together, all at the same time.
"Knew this was too good to be true," Donna sighs, weaving her way through the assembled adventurers to the front, putting up her fists. "Ash, how much time you gonna need me to buy you, d'you think?"
Her limbs are heavy and still shaking some, and the prospect of a protracted brawl with a cloister of skeletons is not something to look forward to... But as the gristliest combatant here, Donna knows her job.
"A lot longer than a short fight." The ashen Arveck says, appearing. She's biting her lip, an almost thoughtful expression. She looks between Donna and Elyanna, "I have a protective circle, and some other magics."
"Nan's curses won't work on the undead." She adds, in monotone, "they're really good otherwise.
She takes out her holy symbol, taking mental inventory of what she can offer. "Vardama's blessings will hurt the undead."
That would be the other shoe dropping....
While she doesn't consider the situation in such a human witticism, Elyanna does, nonetheless feel a certain uncertain tension abate. That it's replaced with the certain crisis response of being actively under threat renders any shallow comforts of the fact moot.
Maidenhead slithers from her place on the hobkin's belt and immediately starts to to crack and pop in an ominous, driving beat as the former Keeper snarls and croons the first guttural syllables of her war song.
<OOC> Elyanna says, "Inspiration: everyone is +1 vs fear/charm and +1 hit/dmg"
The door rattles again, and splinters down the middle. The impact shakes the manse once more, and the sound of something scraping viciously against the other side can be heard.
Delilah tucks herself in behind her sister, and draws the pistol she'd borrowed from one of the caravan guards. "Well, I suppose this wasn't supposed to be easy," she points out, with an air of bravado that covers the audible swallow that Donna, at least, will have heard.
The door is assaulted again, and this time it split down the middle; several skulls look through the hole with eyeless sockets, all of their teeth chattering excitedly; they move to the side and a single, oversized limb wrapped in putrefying but corded muscle with long, clawed fingers on its flesh-less hand pushes through, flexing in the air as if straining to grab someone.
Finding nobody within reach, a final impact on the door sends it flying off its mountings, smashing into furniture with enough force to send that flying, also.
The laboratory beyond is dark, but the hulking figure in the doorway is visible just from its bulk as it steps stoops to step through, and unfold to its full height. A massive creation, standing over nine feet tall with rippling, skinless musculature stitched together all over it. It has five skulls, on on top of the spine and four more sticking out of its chest where it's sternum ought to have been, teeth clattering away like they can't wait to begin a feast. Its left hand has the massive claw, while its right ends with a enormous, solid bony protrusion.
"It's Brutus," whispers Poppy. "Brutus is awake."
"Yeah he is," Donna murmurs, staring wide-eyed up at the amalgamation of bones, muscle, and more muscle.
Sighing to herself, she clenches her fists, and plants one foot forward. "Welp. Guess we gotta put 'im back t'sleep the hard way."
Ashes vividly remembers the Vardman advice, 'no matter how good an idea it seems at the time, do not play with the remains'. Definitely. Do not. Do not sit the hands on the feet and the head on the hands to create a mini-homonculous statue.
And do not stitch a dozen corpses together into an immense monstrosity. Animating it, that's right out also. The hobgoblin stares at a heresy and abomination.
"That's not her vessel, but Brutus might have been practice." She pushes the mental image of a nine foot octoperv from her mind.
And you, Brutus?
Elyanna kinda flubbs a note at the sight of the abomination, though she's really the one here with the musician's ear.
She'll give herself a proper critique later, no doubt. She continues her song with renewed vigor and reaches for her buckler with the other hand...
"...Uh yeah," Delilah squeaks. "That's... that's big. I was expecting a squid-face, not five people mushed together into one enormous, huge, hellmasher... thing.
"Actually, Ectra used ten corpses to make that," Popppy supplies, helpfully. "She--"
"Not... now please," Delilah asks. She takes a step back, and her eyes flare up to a blue glow. "Alright. Let's do this."
<OOC> Donna says, "Swift -- Bloodrage (Blur, Haste) => Standard -- Cast (Mirror Image) => Move -- Get up in 'is fas." GAME: Donna RAGES!, gaining +2 to melee attack/damage/Will saves and 16 temporary HP GAME: Donna casts Mirror Image. Caster Level: 8 DC: 14 GAME: Donna rolls 1d4+3: (2)+3: 5 GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1+1: (13)+11+1+1: 26 GAME: Donna rolls 1d6+1+2+2+1: (1)+1+2+2+1: 7
That is a very impressive display of necromantic might, standing in the doorway of the lab.
Fortunately for the party, Donna knows how to weave her own display. It begins with a blast of pale-blue fire that limns her form and makes her outline smeary and blurry. Then, quicker than the eye can easily follow, a series of hand gestures and a shouted series of nonsense syllables end in one Donna becoming six, as she seems to take one short step in six different directions at once.
And a half-dozen heads turn to regard the rest of the party, as a half-dozen voices speak in unison.
"Just, like, aim high, yeah?"
And with that, the Donnas seem to flicker-smear for a breath, and suddenly they're face-to-abs with the undead colossus, a spiked fist whistling as it tears the air on its way to its target.
Sadly, as fast as her fist moves, it lands with an almost terrifyingly quiet *tmp*
Stupid leathery muscle fiber...
GAME: Delilah rolls 1d20+15: (2)+15: 17
Brutus doesn't even move. At all. Donna's fist slams into the stitched up abomination and the thing doesn't move even enough to be polite; and indeed, Donna has to pull her hand away quickly to avoid it getting chewed on by those clattering teeth.
The hulk of bone and flesh winds up with its arm that ends in the heavy, boney protrusion, and roars like a mutated bear as it brings it down, hammering the space right about where Donna had been standing a moment earlier; fortunately the only thing to pay the price is one of Donna's mirror images. And oh boy does it pay.
So does the floor, for that matter.
<OOC> Delilah will cast scorching ray on it. GAME: Delilah casts Scorching Ray. Caster Level: 8 DC: 17 GAME: Delilah rolls 1d20+7: (9)+7: 16 GAME: Delilah rolls 1d20+7: (2)+7: 9 GAME: Delilah rolls 4d6: (16): 16 <OOC> Delilah hits once. And that's that!
While Donna is rushing forwards, Delilah is taking a step back; that thing is huge, and that is... not her specialty. Not fighting it toe to toe, anyway. "I, uhh," she sputters. "Well then." She draws a hasty rune in the air, and fires off a pair of bolts made of pure fire; one of them impacts the golem, setting its shoulder on fire. The other, as a measure of Delilah's rattled stated, just hits the wall. And sets that on fire, naturally.
GAME: Ashes casts Magic Circle Against Evil. Caster Level: 5 DC: 16
"Feiu of the tears, protect Donna. A lot. A big circle." Ashlee says, praying rather quickly and stepping up behind the brawler. She touches her back, and there's a brief, grey silvery flare surrounding her on the floor.
Protections, from the Goddess of Death, from Undeath. It should help and hold. Standing behind Donna like a dark shadow, Ashes finds herself staring up at Brutus. This is too close.
<OOC> Elyanna says, "5' to 8*12 and , still doing inspiration since it's fre to maintain, i'll try to pop brutus twice" GAME: Elyanna rolls weapon1+1: (5)+11+1: 17 GAME: Elyanna rolls weapon1-4: (12)+11+-4: 19
Seeing Ashes and Donna step into the breach, Elyanna steps up to the reach of her favored weapon. While Maidenhead writhes around her between the pops and cracks punctuating her macabre dance, Elyanna flicks the weapon out twice in cadence at the abomination. Sadly, the silver tresses of her popper merely lick at the air near a skull here, a shoulder there, rather than hewing the reanimated meat as her Mistress intended. Clearly the lingering venom is to blame, as the Keeper hasn't regained the fullness of her color, yet she continues her march undeterred to help the others.
GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1+1+1-2: (1)+12+1+1+1+-2: 14 (EPIC FAIL) GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1+1+1-2: (7)+12+1+1+1+-2: 20 GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1+1+1-2: (10)+12+1+1+1+-2: 23 GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1+1+1-2-5: (20)+12+1+1+1+-2+-5: 28 (THREAT) GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1+1+1-2-5: (7)+12+1+1+1+-2+-5: 15 (Not Confirmed) GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1+1+1-2-5: (2)+12+1+1+1+-2+-5: 10 GAME: Donna rolls 1d6+1+2+3+1: (5)+1+2+3+1: 12 GAME: Donna rolls 1d6+1+2+3+1: (2)+1+2+3+1: 9
Bouncing on her toes, Donna lunges forward again, one punch flowing to the next with lethal speed.
However, whether it's the lingering traces of venom in her veins, or the fact that this thing's anatomy is just too weird to draw a bead on, the five brawlers grimace as they hop back, shaking their hands. "This guy's a lil' brick wall-y over here... Anyone got any ideas?"
GAME: Delilah rolls 1d20+15: (5)+15: 20 GAME: Delilah rolls 1d5: (1): 1 (Mirror Images, 1 is Donna) GAME: Delilah rolls 2d10+7: (10)+7: 17
Brutus receives Donna's fists like a brick wall receives... Well, fists. The impacts seem to be doing damage, but the putrefied musculature is almost like rock in its ability to resist punches. The creature howls at Donna, and swings its club arm again, this time managing by some stroke of luck to entirely miss all of Donna's doubles, and hit Donna herself, with a blow to the abdomen that would leave anyone on the floor wheezing.
GAME: Delilah casts Grease. Caster Level: 8 DC: 16
"Donna!" Delilah draws the runes for her next spell in a hurry, conjuring... a puddle of slick, oily stuff on the floor, right under the golem's feet.
<OOC> Ashes says, "well, say stuff, and try a channel (1 of 5) to harm undead, use my malleable symbol so it's a cone." GAME: Ashes rolls 3d6: (7): 7 GAME: Ashes rolls knowledge/religion: (17)+17: 34 GAME: Delilah rolls 1d20+10: (2)+10: 12 (vs DC12 fails)
"Silver. A blessed weapon. Cold Iron. Might work." Ashlee says, as she pulls out her holy symbol. Concentrating on it, and aiming the base, she's using it to direct Vardama's aura in a specific way. A cone that fills the hallway.
Largely, so she doesn't accidentally get Poppy. Just in case she says, "Poppy, get back from me."
The power of the Grey Lady flows through her and surrounds Brutus. Only, not a lot of it.
"She's testing our resolve." Something sure is.
"Wait1 That's a golem." Ashlee says, finally recognizing what they're facing. It should have been obvious. A construct, dead body parts. "A necromantic flesh golem. Electricity heals it. Fire is very effective."
She thinks a moment more, adding an opinion and a warning, "Reckless necromancers make them to guard property. Except, they tend to go berserk when damaged too much, and wreck everything."
GAME: Elyanna rolls weapon1+1: (6)+11+1: 18 GAME: Elyanna rolls weapon1-4: (12)+11+-4: 19
Continuing her kinky bardic war dance, Elyanna once again sends forth Maidenhead's enchanted tresses to try and sever tendons, part bone, or otherwise disconstitute the dreadful thing. Though there is a something particularly biting in the bassy >CRACK!< of the first last, it doesn't come quite as close as the followup, which still fails to deliver on it's promise.
"I'm not carrying anything like that!" she hisses between bars. <goblin-talk>
GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1+1+1-2: (6)+12+1+1+1+-2: 19 GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1+1+1-2: (19)+12+1+1+1+-2: 32 GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1+1+1-2: (3)+12+1+1+1+-2: 16 GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1+1+1-2-5: (1)+12+1+1+1+-2+-5: 9 (EPIC FAIL) GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1+1+1-2-5: (6)+12+1+1+1+-2+-5: 14 GAME: Donna rolls 1d6+1+2+3+1: (1)+1+2+3+1: 8
While she might not actually be extremely *effective,* Donna is at least occupying the bulk of the creature's attention. The club-hand cracking her ribs is *definitely* proof of that!
"So wait it ain't even a proper zombie?! Motherf-- I HATE THAT SQUID."
Paf paf paf paf go her fists against the monster's hide; if it could bruise, perhaps her blows might elicit more response.
GAME: Delilah rolls 1d20+10: (16)+10: 26 GAME: Delilah rolls 1d20+15: (9)+15: 24 GAME: Delilah rolls 1d5: (4): 4
Brutus isn't even bleeding; there's clear damage, but it still seems superficial and the beast isn't even slowing down. It's still focused on the puny girl in front of him who keeps slamming her fists into his musculature, if only because nothing else has taken his attention away yet; even the burning shoulder doesn't seem to have managed that. It swipes with the clawed hand, and the sharpened bony protrusions slash one of Donna's doubles into ribbons. Luckily, it wasn't Donna.
GAME: Delilah casts Haste. Caster Level: 8 DC: 18 <OOC> Delilah says, "Elyanna, you feel faster." <OOC> Donna says, "You have double your move, +1 AC, +1 to attack, and a bonus partial action."
Delilah, for her part, moves a few feet to stand somewhere a little... less within had-smashing range, before she turns her focus to her companions. "Elyanna? Here you go!" She draws her runes and as they complete and disperse in a burst of light, Elyanna will feel herself... getting faster. Or perhaps the world is slower. Well... either way.
<OOC> Ashes says, "I'll take the crossbow out and try another channel 2 of 5, DC12" GAME: Ashes rolls 3d6: (9): 9 GAME: Delilah rolls 1d20+10: (19)+10: 29 (Brutus Save)
Ashlee concentrates on her holy symbol, willing the peace of the grave to come and take this construct away. She feels the cold, clammy comfort of the Feiu of the Tears flowing through her, out her holy symbol to envelope Brutus.
Except, the flow of energy is lethargic. Do holy symbols need a breaking in period? Hers isn't working so well.
Discouraged, the Mourner removes her light crossbow from her satchel as she also takes a step back, leaving Donna to trade blows with Brutus. "It's not. It's necromancy, but more on the artifice side than magical. That's why electricity heals it."

It's a peculiar sensation, and the Keeper's song seems to up it's cadence an appreciable deal.
With a, "Thanks!" slipped hastily(how else?) between uptempoed lashes, Elyanna sends three flicks of Maidenhead toward the abomination, and, perhaps due to her enhanced celerity, the first makes contact, parting illwrought flesh to some small measure. Verses two and three, however, aren't quite the chorus repeats she'd hoped them to be.

GAME: Donna rolls 1d20+9+2: (6)+9+2: 17
"Man fuck this," Donna snarls, leaning back and gathering motes of bright blue energy into one palm... Just as she's about to unleash whatever spell she had on deck, however, Brutus' claw rakes across her face, causing the half-cast spell to dissipate with a *snap*.
"AUGH!" The brawler yells, clapping one hand to her cheek. "FUCK *YOU!*"
<OOC> Delilah says, "Brutus is going to shift his targets..." <OOC> Delilah says, "pushing past Donna (who will get an AoO of her own) and bringing it down on ASHES." GAME: Elyanna rolls weapon1+2: (7)+11+2: 20 (Elyanna AOO) GAME: Delilah rolls 1d20+15: (2)+15: 17
Brutus howls, after clawing Donna across the face during her ill-fated casting attempt, and then just shoves the brawler out of the way and barrels past her, charging out of the grease puddle and ignoring the twin attacks from Donna and Elyanna on his way past. His target? Ashes. The one who's been singing him with positive channeling. For which, it seems, she must be made to appreciate the subtleties of being a meat pancake.
The golem leaps, and brings its club-arm down hard; and luckily for Ashes he just misses, and smashes a hole into the floor beside her.
GAME: Delilah rolls 1d20+10: (18)+10: 28
Delilah throws up her hands and shrieks as Brutus' massive arm comes down, right between her and Ashes. (Admittedly, a lot closer to Ashes than her.) The sorceress breathes rapidly, eyes gone wide as she's exactly where she doesn't want to be -- right next to a massive monstrosity.
The golden sorceress moves backwards slowly, and angles to put distance between herself and Ashes, as well; not because she doesn't want to help the Mourner, but because standing where she is, she *can't* help her. Standing next to a massive stitched abomination of flesh and bone isn't good for her fighting abilities.
<OOC> Ashes says, "Channel 3 of 5 DC12" GAME: Ashes rolls 3d6: (10): 10
Ashlee makes a small squeak noise as she dodges to the side and the floor shatters near her. She is absolutely certain she doesn't want to be hit by that. She steps back, and back, and back again, reversing and juggling her crossbow and her holy symbol.
She'll need both hands to load the crossbow and the Vardama's peace seems to have some effect. She aims the base of her scales at Brutus and thinks of her time in the Grey halls.
No, NOT Delilah and Bethany snogging in the hot springs. Some... other peaceful death experience. Like looking for slugs under rocks. Regular slugs. Not the Ectra N'garra kind.
The cold embrace shrivels and scorches Brutus' skin.
<OOC> Elyanna says, "i'll 5' if i can to keep him from moving on ashes and recommend del gets a little further back too," <OOC> Elyanna says, "then full attack skippy. still maintaining bardic" GAME: Elyanna spends ONE use of BARDIC PERFORMANCE. The situation is evolving quickly. As the creature continues to brutalize both companion and terrain, Elyanna misses a note and takes a half, changing it up a bit to try and regain the tempo as everyone shuffles priorities and position. The half hob edges in to cut off the monster pursuit of the Mourner as her healing talents will be sorely needed in any event, and another flurry of lash strokes hiss out at the abomination. The first sends embalming fluid and errant muscle fibers into the air, as Maidenhead's silver tresses divorce them from the fetid construct. The second snaps into open air, and her tempo is restored as she barks, "Behind me, both of you!" somehow keeping to the melody of her song. The third bites as surely as the first, cutting a line across the exposed eight pack.

"Oh no you don't!" Donna roars as Brutus barrels past her, the brawler getting a decent dig in on the way. Seeing the monster just casually roll up to threaten the casters, however ineffectually, causes her flames to flare all the brighter for a moment, and she hurls herself into the fray to restrain the abomination's terrible arms.
"Your master is fucking *dead* you pile of bones and shit, knock it the fuck off in the name of--"
- SMASH* goes the club on her already-bloody head.
"--fuckshit"
Donna manages to keep her feet, but is visibly reeling from the blow, and looks like she may be in need of Ashes' more long-term aid soon, if measures aren't taken...
