Zak Finn is an exception to almost all of the rules. A fighter, but well-educated and perceptive. A warrior, but graceful, rather than powerful. And an Eldanar that couldn't care less about how his fellow man is getting along. Most days.
Zak (or Finn, as he's mostly known nowadays except to his closest friends) caught the attention of the weapons masters early. He could consistently hit a bullseye with a bow, which wasn't all that exceptional. But he could also hit the chinks in armor with a whip from fifteen paces, moving the weapon like it was an extension of his body as he danced around more skilled opponents.
Eventually, he got into the business of tracking down fugitives. Not because of any sort of moral imperative, but because the pay was better than day labor or guarding some merchant's silk wagons. It helps that there was usually a bonus for bringing them back alive, and relatively unharmed -- things that Finn excelled in. Sometimes they were even well-off enough to negotiate their escape -- if they could pay a higher price than the bounty, and Finn thought it prudent to lose their trail. But it wasn't very often that he let the true villains negotiate their way out of it. They could never quite meet the prices that he set for them. Unfortunate.
He worked in Rune, and then eventually travelled to Tashraan, hoping to make it big in the big city. Of course, dreams rarely work out like that, do they? Instead of riches for tracking down dangerous men, he found himself taking pittances for tracking down those that few cared about, and with no possessions to their name worth bargaining for -- slaves, mostly.
The days started to grow longer, and his disgust with the city grew deeper by the day. How was anyone supposed to make a living here when prices are so high and the wages were so low? Especially when you couldn't find quality work? (It had nothing to do with any kind of moral compunction about slavery. Really. A pure economic decision, hand to Daeus.)
So he left, and came to Alexandria. Maybe not quite as exciting as Rune or Tashraan, but a grand city in its own right, and one where he could maybe make a better name for himself.
Of course, that usually means doing all sorts of jobs. Finn will even take the ones that other people might turn down, for whatever reason -- provided they can pay his prices.
Everyone's got bills, right?
Roleplay Hooks
- Eldanar - And almost assuredly a resounding disappointment to his ancestors. Not that he gives a damn.
- Fighter - Not that you might guess that just from looking at him. He doesn't tend to wear heavy armor, and he isn't exactly a hulking brute like what you might see at the Temple of Kor. But he's got a reputation for getting the job done clean.
- Former Slaver - He doesn't make a big secret about it. He used to be in the business. Now he's not. If asked, he tends to simply shrug it off and say that it didn't pay enough. It wouldn't be the first time someone's tried to pick a fight about it. Probably won't be the last.
- Mercenary - He does things. For money. Some of them probably a little less savory than what the shining "heroes" of the Guild would accept. ("Ha! Heroes...man is it hard to say that with a straight face. Heroes. Yeah, right...") Still, there are rumors that the merc has his standards, and doesn't accept everything.
- Educated - Not just a mountain of muscle. Zak has some real brains in that head of his. A formal education. He can read, and write, and probably knows a fair bit about history and geography, and could keep up with many a scholar on many a topic. Who knows how that even happened.
Familiar Faces
- Your Name Could Be Here! - Interested in meeting Finn? Think that the characters would get along? Hate each other? I'm always looking for new friends. Or frenemies. Whatever.
