+ | The good news is that the small crossroads town is almost-entirely evacuated! |
||
− | <Log soon..> |
||
+ | |||
+ | The first wave of wagons is off with its Union escort, the druids and rangers taking their earthy smells and barnyard habits with them as they surround the villager's caravan and go. They're heading west and will eventually need to hook north to hit the main roads back towards Alexandros-proper. The hearty folk fleeing their semi-permanent homes in the (surprisingly) profitable, maybe-last-chance trade stop this side of the Desolation. |
||
+ | |||
+ | The bad news is two-fold. |
||
+ | |||
+ | First, you're still here; the Guild drew the short straw on this mission and you're pulling double-duty as the ones responsible to make sure everyone remaining gets out and then acting as a rearguard for the main body of evacuees. Naturally, there are stubborn-assed Khazadi traders who haven't shown up to join the caravan. |
||
+ | |||
+ | Second, this place is not built with defense in mind and the Union scouts are quite certain a group of undead are not far off. |
||
+ | |||
+ | Time is not on your side and the few of you left behind are standing outside of a squat, brick-walled, one-room shop-cum-home trying to coax a pair of bearded bastards out before they're left to die under the wave of ill-tempered, ambulatory corpses. |
||
+ | |||
+ | Even better, it's started to rain and thunder rolls in the distance. |
||
+ | |||
+ | "Hey! Hey!" A dramatically coloured egalrin is waving a fat envelope of papers and cawing at the stubborn Khazadi. He's not the sort of thing one would expect to see around a khazadi settlemen, except perhaps underground and in the form of a canary. However, much like that canary, Integrity C Truefeather, esquire, the 'C' is not for Canary is here to herald a warning of impending disaster. |
||
+ | |||
+ | Hopefully without dying in the process. |
||
+ | |||
+ | "The acting council of Alexandros has ordered the evacuation! Evacuation! This means they're suspending your mining license, AND your insurance! You have no workplace insurance! You're personally liable for any injuries in and around your property!" |
||
+ | |||
+ | He flaps his wings vigorously, "Including those caused by third parties, like ambulatory undead! You need to go. Go now!" |
||
+ | |||
+ | Slixvah, an egalrin woman that was with the crew who sounded the alarm for the incoming wights, finds herself back here once more, outside the safety of the walls. Still feeling terrible. And the sounds of rain doesn't make it sound any better at all. |
||
+ | |||
+ | She rubs her beak, her chirping in a rough and rugged tongue of the khazad, "Listen to tha flappy boy, lads. Buildin's will hold up ta the undead shites, but not yerselves. C'mon, we gots ta get movin'." <Khazdul> |
||
+ | |||
+ | Nemori finds herself wondering, once again, what she's doing. She couldn't care less about the dwarves, though she hasn't made a point of saying as much. Yet. But she'd been asked to keep an eye on Jay, and so here she is. Thankfully, with the coming of the rain, she brought along her hat, and has swapped out of her dress for a more practical expeditionary clothes... her rapier and knife slung from her hip. And an impatient look on her face. "If they do not wish to leave, perhaps we should just leave them be..." she offers. As if just supplying it as an option. |
||
+ | |||
+ | Well, just because someone was irregular, didn't mean they couldn't be counted on to show up regularly, and on time. Zofija was doing her duty to help out where she could, especially since the pay was still good. The arvek-nar cavalier was waiting somewhat impatiently outside of the building, with screech not far away. |
||
+ | |||
+ | "Look, we need to go, _now_." She grunts. If you need help getting your things out of here then just open the door, but if you wait a minute later trying to do this on your own, then we're going to have to break the door down and pull you out of there. I'd rather it didn't come to that." |
||
+ | |||
+ | "Och, nae, ye can fook right off, lad. These are sturdy Khazad-w'auls an' we dinnae poot doon roots just tae up an' fook right off at the first sign of trouble!" From the sound of it the dwarf is right on the other side of the door, leaning heavily into it and occasionally jamming a stubby finger into the wood. |
||
+ | |||
+ | "(Ae, but don' she soun' lovely with her bonnie accent?)" Asks a more distant voice from somewhere further back into the shop/house. "(Ken we nae jus' build another house?)" |
||
+ | |||
+ | "Yer always taken t'other fellas side!" Bellows the first voice in response. The beginnings of a bit of a domestic. A pause. "Nae, now! Don't ye be touchin' m'door! It's... it's an ancient heirloom. Belonged tae my gran! Sentimental value!" |
||
+ | |||
+ | The rain is picking up. The horses and ponies tethered nearby nicker and snort, shifting anxiously as the conversation continues. The shutters and doors of the other abandoned buildings open and close as the wind gust and tent flaps flutter. |
||
+ | |||
+ | Thunder rolls again. That might be the sound of approaching creatures in the distance... |
||
+ | |||
+ | 'Oh! I should try their own language! I learned a few words!' Jay clacks his beak enthusiastically, after Slixvah's statements. So he does, "Poison gas! Death! Choking! Aaaack!" |
||
+ | |||
+ | 'My friend told me that always works!" He waves his envelope as the thunder rumbes, 'Do you hear that? It's a big fat legal tsunami coming your way. Act of God! God! A really bad one. Heth and Thul. The walking remains don't care about heirloom doors but they do care about noggin' nomming, and your thick skulls will keep them chewing all day!' |
||
+ | |||
+ | He adds one last final warning in their native tongue, "Mine collapse..... >gak<." <khazdul> |
||
+ | |||
+ | Slixvah rolls her eyes and groans. "And there won't be any gran-kids from your fookin' twin rocks ta give the bloody door to if you don't get your arses out. I fought the damn things and they don't fook 'round!" <Khazdul> |
||
+ | |||
+ | A brief aside to call back into the house. "Thanks sugar!" she coos before switching right back to the dwarvish tone. |
||
+ | |||
+ | "Stop being a hard arse and come on! Best shite ta happen is nothin' happens, worst is ya die and we'll have ta kill ya zombie body and burn it. No right proper death that is!" <Khazdul> |
||
+ | |||
+ | Slix shifts a wing as an errant wind brushes by Tegri, giving him a tinge of good faith as she pulls a wand out of her sleeve. She glances to Nemori, giving a slight nod. She wasn't was opposed to letting them perish. Practicality trumps survival and all that. She does give Jay a look for a brief moment. "We'll work on that Blue." |

Finding wights in the forests is the second. And there's how many other areas attacked and evacuated already?" |
||
+ | |||
+ | "Your door will still be here when you get back, promise. But if you stay in here, then they'll claw and tear through it and destroy it instead of leaving it alone when you're somewhere else safe. You're putting your home at risk staying here." |

Nemori wonders, aloud. Loud enough for it to travel through the door. "It sounds like it may be worth leaving them here to die like the coward dwarves they are." |

||
+ | |||
+ | Lightning flashes now and the wind is picking up, falling at an angle from the north. The thunder roll is close behind. |
||
+ | |||
+ | "Ye'r an eejit ." The voice is closer to the door now, maybe just on the other side of the shuttered window. "A'm gaun wi' thaim." |
||
+ | |||
+ | "Nae!" |
||
+ | |||
+ | "Aye!" |
||
+ | |||
+ | The door rattles a bit in its frame. |
||
+ | |||
+ | The sound of distant thunder draws the bluejay egalrin's head around, his beak pointing at it, off in the distance. He turns slightly, to one side, then the other. There's a jolt in his posture, he stands straighter, and starts fiddling with the door hinges. |
||
+ | |||
+ | "There's something coming! That's not thunder, that's an army!" He's got a pen-knife out, a knock-off goblin-knife design, that he's using on the hinge pins. "Do you hear that rain? Listen! Listen closely. It's not rain! It's running feet. Wet feet slapping quickly over the ground." |
||
+ | |||
+ | His discrete sabotage of the door finished, he calls out, "Khazdul! Walls won't save you! Doors won't save you! I'm a bird! If I can knock it in you'll be done for by what's coming!" |
||
+ | |||
+ | Then, in the great tradition of avians everywhere, he flies into it with a thump. |
||
+ | |||
+ | GAME: Jay rolls disable device: (20)+9: 29 |
||
+ | |||
+ | With surprising ease, the l'eagle egalrin slides the hinge pins up and loose. They fall on the inside-side of the doorway but then the door falls out with two Khazad mid-struggle atop it. |
||
+ | |||
+ | Jay and Slixvah have to hop back as the heavy, ungraceful pair land with an "OOF!" duet. |
||
+ | |||
+ | The one on the bottom is a dirty-blonde haired fellow in simple clothes with rough features holding a hammer. Atop him is a softer-looking Khazadi man with his raven hair in dozens of delicate braids. He has a few pieces of jewelry and is holding a packed sack. |
||
+ | |||
+ | Slixvah perks up slightly and makes a upward trill sort of questioning sound as she cranes her head towards the intersection. She grinds her beak, flicking her wand about before smacking her face with it. A gust of wind ruffles her robes. "I am TOO FOOKIN' tired to ROB YOU! It's raining bricks out here, and there's some of the bloody fools are comin' right! Now!" she yells through the door- <Khazdul> |
||
+ | |||
+ | Blink. Hop. Oh. Looks like bird power worked. "... oh, wow, nice work, Blueberry. Now come on! Cart's right there we gotta bounce faster than a gobbo on three shots of gnomish coffee ground with a khazad stone smasher and dumped full of sugar harvested from the top of fuck-this-mountain!" |
||
+ | |||
+ | Nemori's eyebrows do rise a little bit at Jay's solution... and how well it succeeds. She makes a note to tell Bob about it, assuming they get out of this. Then she's moving on, turning towards the carts and the horses. "Good. Now this foolishness has ended, we can be on our way. I do not doubt Integrity's description of our situation. Dire does not begin to describe this situation." |
||
+ | |||
+ | The arvek-nar is grumbling to herself when Jay is working on getting the door removed. When it falls to the ground, she grunts and picks it up to hall to the cart. "Alright, your door is taken care of. Nice work, Blue. Didn't know the C stood for carpentry too." |
||
+ | |||
+ | Then the jovial nature is gone, and she's gearing up the animals to move. "If the blue egalrin says they're coming, chances are they're coming. So we need to get going, now. Quit your bickering and move, alright?" |

+ | The two dwarves are stunned and in the middle of untangling themselves and standing up with a gurgling howl from the norther edge of town spills in to twist your guts. The pair freeze and exchange wide-eyed looks. Blondie purses his lips in terror while Raven curls his back and clenches his teeth in a wince. |
||
+ | |||
+ | "At least ye hae yer door!" Raven offers sarcastically. |
||
+ | |||
+ | "I'm sorry, yer always right, 'n I bloody love you." Blondie answers apologetically. He extends his not-holding-a-hammer hand and they both make to head towards the wagon as rapid, mud-slapping sounds announce the arrival of rotting quadrupedal undead... |

+ | Nemori's face goes hard when the first of the rumbling feet come into view. Or rather, their owners. "Festrog," she declares, her voice dripping with disgust as she climbs aboard the cart, drawing forth her rapier. "Do not let them surround you, or pull you to the ground!" |
||
+ | |||
+ | |||
+ | "Alright, get moving." The arvek-nar grunts as she gets up and onto her mount, looking around for where Jay may have spotted the undead. Then, Nemori finds them. "From the north, form up a line to give them a safe route onto the wagon or ponies." She shouts back, sending the griffon running through the gap between the cart and the home, where she brandished her hammer. "This could have been avoided if you moved faster, I sure as hell hope no one gets hurt because of this." |
||
+ | |||
+ | "Tha's boggin'!" Raven complains, his eyes wide. He hefts the sack over his shoulder and makes a scramble for the wagon. A grunt and he's tossed what belongings he thought to pay in next to Nemori, then he's scrambling up with Blondie pushing on his rump from below to help. |
||
+ | |||
+ | "Forgefather gird us from evil!" Blondie shouts, extending a hand and clasping wrists with Raven before being hoisted up into the bed of the wagon as well. He hoists up his hammer. It's not a mace or warhammer; just a hammer. "If they get close they'll get a righ' good thumpin'!" |

||
+ | |||
+ | He's yanking at his rapier, which seems stuck in the scabbard again. A strange seeming comes over him, his feathers become less ruffled and he goes silent. Expertly he whips the thin blade, and stabs at the creature. |

||
+ | |||
+ | Then, running into view, a taller, paler form of undead. Her long, black hair is patchy, thin, and greasy. One arm hangs uselessly at her side and a faded, torn blue cloak of Dragonier dangles behind her. Half-rotten, black eyes go wide at the sound of prey and she issues a high-pitched skree of triumph. |

It's a sharp knife, but it's a thick rope. "Shadows take me if I let anyone talk me into sticking my neck out for dwarves again," she adds, grunting, as the fibers part under the blade's edge all too slowly. |

Screech harries the second one, but beak and claw miss, and the second rending talon hits true, but ruptures something foul within the beast. |

+ | The Khazadi shopkeep couple aren't much for talking in a crisis but (thankfully) they don't seem the type to freeze helpelessly, either. Blondie pushes past Raven and flips his carpenter's hammer around. He starts slamming at the same rope Nemori is cutting at in the hopes of loosing the downed horse. |
||
+ | |||
+ | Raven fidgets with his rings before kissing one. Then lifts his hand and grumbles out something in Khazdul about 'blood of the fathers.' A single arcane orb glows into existence and tears across the short distance before popping against one of the undead creatures. |
||
+ | |||
+ | The festrogs still seem intent on the horses. Whether it's because they're the larger targets or because they're clever enough to know that the civilians will be trapped here without means of escape... now's not the time to wonder, really. |
||
+ | |||
+ | It's an unpleasant sight watching the third creature set into the downed animal. Thankfully, the horse's complaints are quickly silenced but the wet noises of the undead thing eating seem to never end. When all's said and done the corpse has a painfully distended belly and the pustules covering its form strain and leak. |

+ | His rapier is back in the sheath. He needs both hands. The bluebird of happiness leaps and lands on the back of one of the ponies, catching the reins of the other in the process. The pony will find this surprising, and the egalrin, startlingly light. Turning his feet talons in, he nudges in above the thighs. "Let's go! Go! Both of you." |

It snarls and snaps, missing, and reaches out with fungus-infected broken fingernails. It nearly snags hold but the arvek nar rider manages to jerk the reins, pulling Screech back. |
||

+ | Then the wight is there! The stink of this creature is powerfully foul; a rot that's festered for decades. The calculated rage behind its eyes is cold and intelligent as it watches Zofija. It waits, too, for the mount to settle from dodging the festrog's attacks and then claws, leaving a wicked scars as black energies drain from the griffon into its attacker. |

This does let her turn and see how things are going behind them, though, as the horse reluctantly starts pulling the cart. Too slowly. She balls a fist, slamming it into the sideboard of the wagon. It's one thing to be weak... another thing entirely to be weak after having once had power. She looks at Jay, managing the ponies but still too close to the festrogs and the wight. She looks at Zofija, valiantly holding the line as Screech grabs the attention of the undead. |
||
+ | |||

She pulls it out, holds it in front of her.. and then she jerks as if hit by a bolt. Her eyes go white, bleeding pure light in the gloom of the day, and her fist is unable to completely conceal the light attempting to burst forth from the token in her hand. And burst forth it does. |

Then she stops to stare at the wight back, as she pulled the reins to maneuver away from the wight. "If I weren't busy right now, your head would be pulp." She grunts before she is away and behind the cart. |

The black blade flickers green in the rain. |

She didn't even bother to look back north, no reason to at the moment, and she was the one stuck in the back, so any less distractions, the better. |

The good news is that the small crossroads town is almost-entirely evacuated!
The first wave of wagons is off with its Union escort, the druids and rangers taking their earthy smells and barnyard habits with them as they surround the villager's caravan and go. They're heading west and will eventually need to hook north to hit the main roads back towards Alexandros-proper. The hearty folk fleeing their semi-permanent homes in the (surprisingly) profitable, maybe-last-chance trade stop this side of the Desolation.
The bad news is two-fold.
First, you're still here; the Guild drew the short straw on this mission and you're pulling double-duty as the ones responsible to make sure everyone remaining gets out and then acting as a rearguard for the main body of evacuees. Naturally, there are stubborn-assed Khazadi traders who haven't shown up to join the caravan.
Second, this place is not built with defense in mind and the Union scouts are quite certain a group of undead are not far off.
Time is not on your side and the few of you left behind are standing outside of a squat, brick-walled, one-room shop-cum-home trying to coax a pair of bearded bastards out before they're left to die under the wave of ill-tempered, ambulatory corpses.
Even better, it's started to rain and thunder rolls in the distance.
"Hey!
Hopefully without dying in the process.
"The acting council of Alexandros has ordered the evacuation! Evacuation! This means they're suspending your mining license, AND your insurance! You have no workplace insurance! You're personally liable for any injuries in and around your property!"
He flaps his wings vigorously, "Including those caused by third parties, like ambulatory undead! You need to go. Go now!"
Slixvah, an egalrin woman that was with the crew who sounded the alarm for the incoming wights, finds herself back here once more, outside the safety of the walls. Still feeling terrible. And the sounds of rain doesn't make it sound any better at all.
She rubs her beak, her chirping in a rough and rugged tongue of the khazad, "Listen to tha flappy boy, lads. Buildin's will hold up ta the undead shites, but not yerselves. C'mon, we gots ta get movin'." <Khazdul>
Nemori finds herself wondering, once again, what she's doing.
Well, just because someone was irregular, didn't mean they couldn't be counted on to show up regularly, and on time. Zofija was doing her duty to help out where she could, especially since the pay was still good. The arvek-nar cavalier was waiting somewhat impatiently outside of the building, with screech not far away.
"Look, we need to go, _now_." She grunts. If you need help getting your things out of here then just open the door, but if you wait a minute later trying to do this on your own, then we're going to have to break the door down and pull you out of there. I'd rather it didn't come to that."
"Och, nae, ye can fook right off, lad. These are sturdy Khazad-w'auls an' we dinnae poot doon roots just tae up an' fook right off at the first sign of trouble!" From the sound of it the dwarf is right on the other side of the door, leaning heavily into it and occasionally jamming a stubby finger into the wood.
"(Ae, but don' she soun' lovely with her bonnie accent?)" Asks a more distant voice from somewhere further back into the shop/house. "(Ken we nae jus' build another house?)"
"Yer always taken t'other fellas side!" Bellows the first voice in response. The beginnings of a bit of a domestic. A pause. "Nae, now! Don't ye be touchin' m'door! It's... it's an ancient heirloom. Belonged tae my gran! Sentimental value!"
The rain is picking up. The horses and ponies tethered nearby nicker and snort, shifting anxiously as the conversation continues. The shutters and doors of the other abandoned buildings open and close as the wind gust and tent flaps flutter.
Thunder rolls again. That might be the sound of approaching creatures in the distance...
'Oh! I should try their own language! I learned a few words!' Jay clacks his beak enthusiastically, after Slixvah's statements. So he does, "Poison gas! Death! Choking! Aaaack!"
'My friend told me that always works!" He waves his envelope as the thunder rumbes, 'Do you hear that? It's a big fat legal tsunami coming your way. Act of God! God! A really bad one. Heth and Thul. The walking remains don't care about heirloom doors but they do care about noggin' nomming, and your thick skulls will keep them chewing all day!'
He adds one last final warning in their native tongue, "Mine collapse..... >gak<." <khazdul>
Slixvah rolls her eyes and groans. "And there won't be any gran-kids from your fookin' twin rocks ta give the bloody door to if you don't get your arses out. I fought the damn things and they don't fook 'round!" <Khazdul>
A brief aside to call back into the house. "Thanks sugar!" she coos before switching right back to the dwarvish tone.
"Stop being a hard arse and come on! Best shite ta happen is nothin' happens, worst is ya die and we'll have ta kill ya zombie body and burn it. No right proper death that is!" <Khazdul>
Slix shifts a wing as an errant wind brushes by Tegri, giving him a tinge of good faith as she pulls a wand out of her sleeve. She glances to Nemori, giving a slight nod. She wasn't was opposed to letting them perish. Practicality trumps survival and all that. She does give Jay a look for a brief moment. "We'll work on that Blue."

"Look, this isn't the first sign, it might not even be the fourth." Zofija sighs, as she takes a step back, taking the hammer off of her back as she did. "Dragonier falling was the first. Finding wights in the forests is the second. And there's how many other areas attacked and evacuated already?"
"Your door will still be here when you get back, promise. But if you stay in here, then they'll claw and tear through it and destroy it instead of leaving it alone when you're somewhere else safe. You're putting your home at risk staying here."
GAME: Zofija rolls diplomacy: (10)+-1: 9
"You know.. if we let them stay, and the undead destroy their door and kill them... then when we come back to clear them out, we will have claim on everything in there as spoils, will we not?" Nemori wonders, aloud. Loud enough for it to travel through the door. "It sounds like it may be worth leaving them here to die like the coward dwarves they are."

"Noo! Daen't y'see!? It's all a lie tae get us oot'n let them swindle us blind."
Lightning flashes now and the wind is picking up, falling at an angle from the north. The thunder roll is close behind.
"Ye'r an eejit ." The voice is closer to the door now, maybe just on the other side of the shuttered window. "A'm gaun wi' thaim."
"Nae!"
"Aye!"
The door rattles a bit in its frame.
The sound of distant thunder draws the bluejay egalrin's head around, his beak pointing at it, off in the distance. He turns slightly, to one side, then the other. There's a jolt in his posture, he stands straighter, and starts fiddling with the door hinges.
"There's something coming! That's not thunder, that's an army!" He's got a pen-knife out, a knock-off goblin-knife design, that he's using on the hinge pins. "Do you hear that rain? Listen! Listen closely. It's not rain! It's running feet. Wet feet slapping quickly over the ground."
His discrete sabotage of the door finished, he calls out, "Khazdul! Walls won't save you! Doors won't save you! I'm a bird! If I can knock it in you'll be done for by what's coming!"
Then, in the great tradition of avians everywhere, he flies into it with a thump.
GAME: Jay rolls disable device: (20)+9: 29
With surprising ease, the l'eagle egalrin slides the hinge pins up and loose. They fall on the inside-side of the doorway but then the door falls out with two Khazad mid-struggle atop it.
Jay and Slixvah have to hop back as the heavy, ungraceful pair land with an "OOF!" duet.
The one on the bottom is a dirty-blonde haired fellow in simple clothes with rough features holding a hammer. Atop him is a softer-looking Khazadi man with his raven hair in dozens of delicate braids. He has a few pieces of jewelry and is holding a packed sack.
Slixvah perks up slightly and makes a upward trill sort of questioning sound as she cranes her head towards the intersection. She grinds her beak, flicking her wand about before smacking her face with it. A gust of wind ruffles her robes. "I am TOO FOOKIN' tired to ROB YOU! It's raining bricks out here, and there's some of the bloody fools are comin' right! Now!" she yells through the door- <Khazdul>
Blink. Hop. Oh. Looks like bird power worked. "... oh, wow, nice work, Blueberry. Now come on! Cart's right there we gotta bounce faster than a gobbo on three shots of gnomish coffee ground with a khazad stone smasher and dumped full of sugar harvested from the top of fuck-this-mountain!"
Nemori's eyebrows do rise a little bit at Jay's solution... and how well it succeeds. She makes a note to tell Bob about it, assuming they get out of this. Then she's moving on, turning towards the carts and the horses. "Good. Now this foolishness has ended, we can be on our way. I do not doubt Integrity's description of our situation. Dire does not begin to describe this situation."
The arvek-nar is grumbling to herself when Jay is working on getting the door removed. When it falls to the ground, she grunts and picks it up to hall to the cart. "Alright, your door is taken care of. Nice work, Blue. Didn't know the C stood for carpentry too."
Then the jovial nature is gone, and she's gearing up the animals to move. "If the blue egalrin says they're coming, chances are they're coming. So we need to get going, now. Quit your bickering and move, alright?"
GAME: Slixvah used a Wand of Mage Armor.
The two dwarves are stunned and in the middle of untangling themselves and standing up with a gurgling howl from the norther edge of town spills in to twist your guts. The pair freeze and exchange wide-eyed looks. Blondie purses his lips in terror while Raven curls his back and clenches his teeth in a wince.
"At least ye hae yer door!" Raven offers sarcastically.
"I'm sorry, yer always right, 'n I bloody love you." Blondie answers apologetically. He extends his not-holding-a-hammer hand and they both make to head towards the wagon as rapid, mud-slapping sounds announce the arrival of rotting quadrupedal undead...
GAME: Nemori rolls knowledge/religion: (9)+6: 15
Nemori's face goes hard when the first of the rumbling feet come into view. Or rather, their owners. "Festrog," she declares, her voice dripping with disgust as she climbs aboard the cart, drawing forth her rapier. "Do not let them surround you, or pull you to the ground!"
"Alright, get moving." The arvek-nar grunts as she gets up and onto her mount, looking around for where Jay may have spotted the undead. Then, Nemori finds them. "From the north, form up a line to give them a safe route onto the wagon or ponies." She shouts back, sending the griffon running through the gap between the cart and the home, where she brandished her hammer. "This could have been avoided if you moved faster, I sure as hell hope no one gets hurt because of this."
"Tha's boggin'!" Raven complains, his eyes wide. He hefts the sack over his shoulder and makes a scramble for the wagon. A grunt and he's tossed what belongings he thought to pay in next to Nemori, then he's scrambling up with Blondie pushing on his rump from below to help.
"Forgefather gird us from evil!" Blondie shouts, extending a hand and clasping wrists with Raven before being hoisted up into the bed of the wagon as well. He hoists up his hammer. It's not a mace or warhammer; just a hammer. "If they get close they'll get a righ' good thumpin'!"

The spearhead of the undead force has arrived. Running on all fours like feral beasts, what used to be Dragonieri humans snarl and yap. Both go for one of the horses attached to the wagon's yolk. "What's a Festrog?" Jay squawks, flapping towards the wagon, "C'mon Slix!"
"Are they frogs? Festering Frogs? Festrogs? Oh that makes sense. Who's driving? I don't know how to drive. I've only driven a wagon once. There isn't an ocean to fall into this time! I don't know if I can keep it straight on the road. Ahh! They're ugly!"
Two have moved into view.
"Sorry Screech, let me sneak by." He tells the fellow avian, half-avain, ducking under a wing and past a massive thigh to come up behind the frog. "What do I do? What do I do?"
He's yanking at his rapier, which seems stuck in the scabbard again. A strange seeming comes over him, his feathers become less ruffled and he goes silent. Expertly he whips the thin blade, and stabs at the creature.
Right in a boil, which bursts, exploding blackish-orange puss everywhere and on his fine courtly attire. None gets in his beak, thankfully. "Oh. Not that. Right. Festering. Festering!"

Slixvah blinks as Jay zooms off, her shaking her head as she follows after but breaking off to get up onto the cart. "I'll drive the damn thing let's just get the hell out!"
Seeing as one of the horses was bitten in to, she raises a glowing hands pats them on the flank. "Ogdo sroyshe" she chants, suffusing it with some energy to keep on pressing on.
A curious glance is shot to Jay, and catching the change in demeanor and filing it away as he signature wing feathers begin to roll out and waft around her. Poised to strike.

The last of the three festrog dashes in, lunging past a startled Jay and taking firm hold of the much-larger animal. There's cracking sound of bone broken and the horse's cries of complaint are choked short. A tongue lolls free and it flops, tangled in the yolk to the ground.
Then, running into view, a taller, paler form of undead. Her long, black hair is patchy, thin, and greasy. One arm hangs uselessly at her side and a faded, torn blue cloak of Dragonier dangles behind her. Half-rotten, black eyes go wide at the sound of prey and she issues a high-pitched skree of triumph.
A distant roll of thunder answers, voices calling out in animalistic hunger. Then, as if all this wasn't bad enough, the gut-wrenching bellow of some gigantic fiend.
GAME: Nemori rolls 1d4+1: (2)+1: 3
Nemori didn't like dwarves. She likes them less now. "Shadows take them if I die here because of them," she grouses to herself, dropping her rapier into the wagon's bed so she can slip her knife free as she climbs to the wagon's front to start sawing at the ropes securing the fallen and lost horse to the wagon. It's a sharp knife, but it's a thick rope. "Shadows take me if I let anyone talk me into sticking my neck out for dwarves again," she adds, grunting, as the fibers part under the blade's edge all too slowly.

Zofija swings wide on the approach, but the arvek-nar steadies and swings again, this time sending it skidding across the ground as Screech muscles in to close the gap further now that everyone was on board. The Khazadi shopkeep couple aren't much for talking in a crisis but (thankfully) they don't seem the type to freeze helpelessly, either. Blondie pushes past Raven and flips his carpenter's hammer around. He starts slamming at the same rope Nemori is cutting at in the hopes of loosing the downed horse.
Raven fidgets with his rings before kissing one. Then lifts his hand and grumbles out something in Khazdul about 'blood of the fathers.' A single arcane orb glows into existence and tears across the short distance before popping against one of the undead creatures.
The festrogs still seem intent on the horses. Whether it's because they're the larger targets or because they're clever enough to know that the civilians will be trapped here without means of escape... now's not the time to wonder, really.
It's an unpleasant sight watching the third creature set into the downed animal. Thankfully, the horse's complaints are quickly silenced but the wet noises of the undead thing eating seem to never end. When all's said and done the corpse has a painfully distended belly and the pustules covering its form strain and leak.
GAME: Jay rolls acrobatics: (17)+9: 26 GAME: Jay rolls ride: (19)+4: 23
"Ahhhh..." Jay looks at the approaching wight, distracted by her fluttering cloak, thinking of things to say and then thinking better of it.
Instead, he dives, a tumble with a twist that squeezes him past Screech and he appears in front of the ponies. "Slix! Get the wagon away, I'll catch up!"
His rapier is back in the sheath. He needs both hands. The bluebird of happiness leaps and lands on the back of one of the ponies, catching the reins of the other in the process. The pony will find this surprising, and the egalrin, startlingly light. Turning his feet talons in, he nudges in above the thighs. "Let's go! Go! Both of you."
The ponies start moving.
"Muscles! Cover our retreat! Don't engage her!" He caws.
Slixvah grimaces as she sees the horse fall and succumb to the vanguard of the undead horde. She grabs a rein, nodding towards the others that release the dead weight. "Okay Apples. Your name is Apples. Apples lets go. H'ya h'ya!" she shouts, whipping the reins and tugging it in a way that's only been seen and never really done.
She looks back to get the state of things, her blinking in surprise that Jay manage to finagle his way out of that. "Yeah big girl, stick to us!" she backs up the l-eagle's insight.

The horse is pulped and scattered about. The other festrog turns its hungry attentions to the griffon. It's less meat than a horse and covered in feathers... but it could still be dinner! It snarls and snaps, missing, and reaches out with fungus-infected broken fingernails. It nearly snags hold but the arvek nar rider manages to jerk the reins, pulling Screech back.
Then the wight is there!

Nemori falls back when Blondie finishes cutting the rope in her stead. It doesn't make her like him any more.
That's when she hears the song. Curiously, she hears it only in her ruined ear, obscurred by her hair. Then the token in her pocket begins to burn. She pulls it out, holds it in front of her.. and then she jerks as if hit by a bolt. Her eyes go white, bleeding pure light in the gloom of the day, and her fist is unable to completely conceal the light attempting to burst forth from the token in her hand. And burst forth it does.
A wave of pure white pulses out from the shadow elf, washing over everyone, and burning the undead as it speeds past them before dissipating.
Nemori falls, after that, collapsing into the wagon's bed, breathing coming far too quickly to be normal.

"Alright, alright, you can all kindly fuck off back to where you came." Zofija grumbles as she pulls the reins back. Then she stops to stare at the wight back, as she pulled the reins to maneuver away from the wight. "If I weren't busy right now, your head would be pulp." She grunts before she is away and behind the cart.
The one remaining feral undead continues its pursuit of Zofija on Screech, snapping and snarling but unable to connect with the armored griffon.
Then... He arrives backlit in the sudden flash of lightning.
Horrible in his rusted platemail, sitting tall under the banner of the Necromancer is a ghast. The undead abomination appears almost human until you consider the empty eye socket or the meatless and bleached lower jaw. He's wreathed in darkness and rides with a wicked scythe propped up high. The black blade flickers green in the rain.
One of his pauldrons is a dragon's skull, pitted and painted with woad. He lifts a free hand and tendrls begin to stretch out from it towards the fallen festrog.
Thunder rumbles again.
The broken things begin to knit... and stir...
The rain is coming down in sheets now.
GAME: Jay rolls knowledge/local: (16)+7: 23
Jay blinks, distracted by the blinding light, but only for a moment. "Go ponies! Go, behind Screech, he's half bird, you can trust him. Don't look to the north, just squeeze by, run. Run!"
The egalrin is encouraging, and anxious, and the ponies rush by the wagon, "C'mon Apples! Keep up with your friends."
Jay jumps at the lightning strike. Head whipping round to catch the silhoutte. "Go. Go. gogogogogo." He flattens himself against his pony and holds tight to the reins for others.

Slixvah turns slightly, giving a thankful for the help before grabbing the reins and-
She instinctively ducks form the blast of light that washes over everything, the fortune teller whipping around to- "Daeus's sun rod! Holy moly Mori! Whatever the hell that was, do it again!" she gasps, then cheers, returning back to her driver duties.
"C'mooooon Apples! Let's gooooooooo!" More reign wrangling as blankets smash against her, smushing her feathers against her head. She spies Jay whipping past. "Huh? Don't look nor-"
She looks.
If she could pale, she could.
Much more frantic now, Slix's ribbon-like feathers grab all of the length of rein and essential become the new rein. "GIDDI-THE FUCK UP APPLES BEFORE YOUR EQUESTRIAN ASS BECOMES APPLE SAUCE!" she screeches.
That seems to do the trick, as it seems that death is a pretty good motivator. Apples whinnies and throws mud behind them, hooves tearing into the road and doubling the horsepower that was lacking before.
Zofija was still holding up the rear while the others were on their way, including Jay. Once the cart was moving, she too spurred on her mount to keep up. "Sorry, we'll get you right as rain when we get back to Alexandria Screech, promise." The arvek-nar grunts as the griffon takes off in pursuit of the carriage. She didn't even bother to look back north, no reason to at the moment, and she was the one stuck in the back, so any less distractions, the better.
