  • Title: Silent Running
  • Emitter: Cryosanthia
  • Characters: Locien, Armnar, Nels, Rocky, Lysos
  • Place: Sage Orum Plaza to Festival Grounds
  • Time: Thursday, July 16, 2020, 5:02 PM
  • Summary: A strange looking dog bursts out of the Arcanist Guild Dungeons and runs into the streets. A guard calls for it to be stopped, it has already murdered one. Nearby adventurers, Locien, Armnar, Nels, Rocky and Lysos give chase. They pursue the dog through the memorial gardens, where a pedestrian is wounded, then manage to force it south into the festival grounds. Rocky and Armnar are hampered by their armour, and Nels is held back by crowds. Once on the field, the drilling equestrians and others practising archery and crossbow techniques are convinced to participate, and fill the air with arrows and bolts. The dog attempts to intimidate Lysos and Rocky, and Locien halts hostilities with a Calm Emotions spell. The Vardaman Lore Master is able to tell by touch that they have a werewolf on their hands, a convicted criminal who supposedly was executed years ago. They try to convince the werewolf, Bereonje, to stay but he bolts towards the Temple District, only to be recaptured by the party's combined efforts.

=--=--=--=--=<* A14: Sage Orum's Plaza, University District *>-=--=--=--=--=-

Named after one of Alexandria's most learned (and perhaps addled) minds, the new University District of the city contains a number of entertainment spots as well as areas of culture and learning. Though many structures and sculptures can be found here, two buildings dominate the plaza with an air of friendly animosity--the grand buildings of the Society for Progressive Arcanists and the Artificer's Guild.

Poised on opposite sides of the central plaza, the two face one another like old misers, each uncertain as to what the other's up to, and pranks between students are a rule of thumb. A series of levies and fines exists should they get too far out of hand, though at times the results may be spectacular. Performers often make use of the great plaza by filling it with music, and rare is the visit without passing a performer's hat or three, five, or nine. Likewise, ramshackle shops selling every sort of magic bauble line the ways, all of varying (and often questionable) quality. A grand statue of Sage Orum overlooks it all, his expression slightly perplexed perhaps, at its mixture of grandeur, invention, glass-filled baubles, and chaos.

At the far end of the area, is the city library. From public records to research into the history of the city and the region itself, there is much one can learn at the city library. Many stories tall, the building towers up over well-lit, tightly-packed cobblestone streets.

In the distance, the Redridge Mountains rise overhead in all their glory. At their peaks, one can see the airships docking, landing, and flying off again under the banners of not only Alexandria but many great nations.

A light rain falls from a grey sky. It's warm and there's a slight wind from the southeast. As such, the weather is tolerable but a little on the miserable side, and has attracted the gloomier of the Arcanists and Artificers to the streets outside their respective buildings. There is traffic, both casual and deliberate, with people generally staying close to buildings with overhangs.

The grand statues of Sage Orum continues to gaze with its permanent perplexed expression. Legend has it, some days he can seem to be frowning, although today is not one of those days.

Locien wanders through the plaza, looking very much the tourist. His gaze goes this way and that, noting the architecture and the people alike with a sort of pleasant detachment, like one wandering through a museum. If there were to be some eventual destination to his unhurried gait, it would likely be the library standing tall over the area.

Aarmnar is seated in a shady spot on the ground. He is tearing into large turkey leg. As he does this, he looks around a bit in curiosity of the plaza.

Nels is walking through the plaza, on his way to the Artificers Guild. He's on his way to maybe get something he's been saving up for, and he's got a spring in his step. He whistles a goblin work song, which is, by it's nature, unprintable. Dwarves sing 'Hi ho', what goblins whistle is not necessarily all-ages. Which is pretty disreputable for whisling.

Rocky wanders, still unfamiliar with much of the city, and the nice weather makes a good excuse to be out an about. Not too hot, not too cold, and not heavy enough to wash anyone away. The masive sith might have low standards for 'nice' weather.

The Mourner pulls the hood further over his head, the rain not seeming to dampen his mood. He moves about the outer circle of the plaza, favoring the side of the Progressive Arcanists for no particular reason, still more fixated upon the sights than the destination.

There's a sudden commotion at the Arcanist's Guild. The doors burst open, slamming into the walls on either side. A large dog in a full run leaps down the steps, brushing past Nels.

A few things are immediately obvious. Something is wrong with its proportions. Physically, it just seems off, the muscles are a little too visible, the back is strangely bent. Also, it's lacking a tail. The pelt is a silvery salt-and-pepper colouration with a mostly black stripe on the nose and head through the ears, and on a thick collar ruff on the forequarters. The back paws have the same dark peppered colouration. The rest of it is silver. Its eyes, and its teeth, are yellowed and crazed.

As the dog lopes away, a bloodied guard appears in the doorway, holding a knife and some chains. He waves the blade around, in warning and for attention. "Stop it! It's already killed one! Don't let him get away!"

Aarmnar continues to eat until he finishes the large leg. He uses the hood a bit to block the rain and when he finishes, he tosses the bone and wipes his mouth and then... As the commotion happens with the insane dog, Aarmnar stands and shakes his head a bit. He grabs his battleaxe and begins to move quickly towards the beast. "Damn, and eer I thought it was going to be a quiet day." He mutters.

Nels is brushed past, and his first inclination with a fleeing foe is to shoot it, but given the distance and the crowds, that's probably not his wisest option, and so, while he does unshoulder the thunderbelcher from his back, he does not load or fire it, instead taking off after the fleeing creature at the best sprint he can manage. He's an air sailor by profession, and a wolf rider when he can help it, so feet are not his first choice generally, but he does the best he can. Goblins do get a good turn of speed despite their size.

Rocky blinks at the sudden comotion, taking a moment to process before moving, nimble for all his bulk, but less speedy than say, a toddle with something in it's mouth. The large sith moves to place himself between the animal and the innocent passersby.

GAME: Armnar rolls 1d20 + 1: (4)+1: 5

Aarmnar rushes forward, battleaxe in hand and tries to swing into a massize hit but misses the beast. It passes him but he manages to persue without issue, for now...

GAME: Nels rolls 1d20+10: (14)+10: 24
GAME: Nels rolls 1d10+5: (8)+5: 13

Nels finds his field of fire, and the area behind his target, clear of people for the moment, minus Aarmnar, but he's a good enough shot that the dwarf doesn't present a problem. He crams powder and a lead ball in his thunderbelcher, rams home the wadding, then pulls back the trigger and fires. There's a thunderous boom and a cloud of smoke, and the dog keeps running, possibly with even more motivation.

<OOC> Cryosanthia says, "Wow your armour got even better. It's AOO"
GAME: Cryosanthia rolls 1d20+8: (12)+8: 20
GAME: Rocky rolls weapon2: (12)+5: 17 (trip attempt)

Rocky aims for the creatures legs as it comes close, trying to trip it up. While the sith's thick hide and even thicker armor him him safe from fangs and claws, they also leand towards overbalance, and the mighty lizard falls to the cobblestones with a crash.

GAME: Rocky rolls weapon2-4: (10)+5+-4: 11
GAME: Cryosanthia rolls 1d20+9: (8)+9: 17

It is turning out to be a rainy day for the dog, as it's paws slip on the cobblestones it is shot in its tail-less rump. Blades are seemingly coming out of no-where, even a statue of a sith-makar tries to trip it. Undaunted it hunkers down, pours on the speed and runs between passers by, heading west towards the memorial district.

It's still visible between the legs of pedestrians, and not that far away, but it's close to getting lost in the crowd.

GAME: Armnar rolls intelligence: (9)+1: 10
GAME: Rocky rolls intelligence: (4)+1: 5
GAME: Nels rolls intelligence: (6)+3: 9
GAME: Lysos rolls intelligence: (8)+2: 10

Aarmnar drops his battleaxe on accident, but no time to pick it up. He rushes forward and tries to pass the beast!

GAME: Armnar rolls athletics: (6)+3: 9

Slippery. People. Running through Alexandria shouldn't be a challenge, but today it is. Too many gawking pedestrians keep stepping in the way, and the dwarf barely manages to catch up with the dog.

GAME: Lysos rolls stealth: (6)+3: 9

Associated neither with the Arcanists nor the Artificers, Lysos is nevertheless about... some musicians, not about to be chased away from a day of possible earnings by the rain have banded together under one of the larger overhangs for a day of busking. Lysos has already dropped a few coins in their various hats, but has decided to hang about and listen, and move about in a light hearted dance just outside of the mild drizzle. So into it is she that she doesn't hear the commotion initially. Not the fleeing dog, not the yelling guard. But the blast of the Thunderbelcher sure does, startling a "Gyeaaah!" out of her as she nearly trips in her attempt to whirl about and see what's going on.

It takes a moment for her to get at least a minimal idea of what's going on.. the crowds aren't so bad, and likely parting thanks to the chase. This allows her to see the fleeing dog and even recognize a couple of the faces going after it. "Thanks for the songs, guys!" she tells the musicians as she dashes off to help.

Starts to dash, anyways. Inspiration comes to her as she gets an idea of where the chase is going, so she veers... right into the open door of the library. To her credit, she does try to do it... well, quietly. But she bumps into a stack of books while trying to avoid a standup shelf. "Sorry!" she exclaims then... a bit loudly. Much to her chagrin and the annoyance of Lady Octagna, the yrch-blooded librarian. This probably won't end well.

GAME: Nels rolls athletics: (15)+10: 25

Nels dashes after the creature, reloading as he goes, powder, ball, wadding, then rammed home. Weapon ready, he dashes after the creature before it's out of sight, his small size and light weight making it fairly easy going. He's also more adept than he maybe gave himself credit for, he's able to keep up easily, darting through the crowd like a small green pinball, slowly catching up to the fleeing dog. He clutches the strap of his thunderbelcher in his teeth as he pumps his arms furiously, catching up to the dog, and passing it just a little, with a calculating look in his eye.

The dog is heading towards the Memorial Gardens square.

GAME: Locien rolls athletics: (13)+-2: 11

Rocky hauls himself up and takes off after in persuit. Not the fastest chaser, but see how long it takes -you- to lift a couple hundred pounds of armored lizard off the floor. All considered, he's doing quite well.

"Excuse me, pardon, I just need..." Locien /finally/ manages to extract himself from the buzz of people frantically fleeing the commotion and gets his first look at the origin. Seeing the agitated...dog, hearing the warning called from the door of the Arcanists lair, and seeing others foolish enough to give chase, he sighs and moves after them, tempo gradually increasing as he adjusts to the heft of his armor. "Well, someone will need me today..."

-=--=--=--=--=--=--=-<* A12: Memorial Gardens District *>-=--=--=--=--=--=--=-

Among the gardens, scents mingle: green, loam and subtle sweetness, wafting from the meticulously groomed grounds. The pathways are smoothly cobbled in muted tones, shaded by the lush canopies of tall, straight trees whose branches arch over the walkways.

At the heart of the park where the paths converge are large marble pedestals supporting bronze or marble statuary, with a newly-raised edifice celebrating those who fought and died on behalf of others.

"THE LIBRARY IS NOT FOR RUNNING!" Lady Octagna throws Lysos out of the library through the nearest door, landing her on the street just as the pack runs by.

A frantic dog, followed by a dwarf, a human, and distantly, a sith-makar. With a goblin lying in wait, attempting to guess which way it's going to dodge.

There are options, the crowded paths aren't the best, winding instead of straight. The are shortcuts through the memorial statues, for those who aren't particularly reverant of past sacrifices.

The dog, somewhat low to the ground and distracted, seems like it's going to run along the paths and through anyone in its way.

GAME: Cryosanthia rolls 1d20+8: (11)+8: 19
GAME: Cryosanthia rolls 1d20+11: (12)+11: 23

The dog keeps running, a hapless gardener is bitten as it passes, tearing open her leg and dragging her off her feet. She screams as she falls to the ground.

GAME: Armnar rolls diplomacy: (15)+1: 16
GAME: Armnar rolls 1d20 + 4: (14)+4: 18

Screaming "Get out of the way!" Armnar manages to part the crowd enough to attempt a tackle. He dives but falls short and lands on his face in some manure... "Yuck!"

GAME: Lysos rolls diplomacy: (8)+8: 16

"Out of the way, please! Thank you! Watch out! Thank you!" Lysos waves one of her arms in a sweeping motion as she does her best to get the attention of people in the way, opening up at least a little room for her in this chase. One look at the oddness of the dog, however, has her reconsidering her original thoughts about trying to tackle it like the others. "Ew." So she keeps on running, first trying to keep apace and then pass the dog, to get ahead of it. Good thing she's been practicing running.

Nels prepares to grab hold of the wolf-dog-thing as it rushes by him, but it snaps at his arm as he reaches out, and almost pulls him from his feet. He stumbles, buffeted by the larger creature, and his attempt to jump on it's back is thwarted. He stumbles a few steps after it, then grumbles and resumes the chase.

GAME: Locien rolls heal: (10)+9: 19

Locien skitters to a stop before the wounded woman, kneeling quickly down. "I'm a healer..." he offers the distressed victim, though he does not wait for permission to reach down and pull the fabric away from her wound, looking it over with a learned eye. He furrows his brow and shakes his head, pulling a potion from his belt and handing it to her. "You will not see my Queen today, but you need help beyond my abilities. Make your way to the Althean temple as soon as you can stand." He looks back to the chase, ready to stand and follow again. "I'm afraid I cannot stay with you."

GAME: Rocky rolls diplomacy: (13)+3: 16
GAME: Rocky rolls athletics: (11)+2: 13

Rocky chuffs. It's a common draconic phrase meaning 'Excuse me, I happen to be rather pressed for time, could you kindly stand aside?' It translates surprisingly well. Or maybe Alexindirans have learned that when a big lizard is running, get out of the way? Either case, Rocky gains ground, but doesn't yet catch up.

"Thank you sir," the wounded woman says, looking up at Locien with watery eyes. She takes the potion with a trembling hand, opens and sips it nervously before downing it completely. She holds her leg, as the wound closes over while still seeming raw. "I'm in your debt."

The Wuffie is bolting for the Bridge over the Tornmwrar. The bridge is usually busy, with families and fishermen, and sometimes the drawbridge is up. To the south is the Festival Grounds, where people often drill with weapons and arvek nar race.

The strange dog dips his head and snaps at Nels as the goblin tries to get on his back, and the gobbo would have too, if it weren't for those nasty teeth. Bitten on the arm, he is held off and the dog keeps bolting along the trail.

Alexandrians, out for a stroll, hear the cries of the adventurers and the dogs snarling, and are making themselves scarce. The paths opening up as they scatter, wide-eyed.

The dog's current heading is the bridge over the Tornmwrar. It could be persuaded to change direction, but that would require help from the crowd and perhaps a few intimidating displays to get it to change direction. A tall order when the civilians have already seen the blood flow.

GAME: Armnar rolls acrobatics: (8)+3: 11
GAME: Cryosanthia rolls 1d20: (20): 20

Armnar stands slowly after a fierce mauling from the creature. He wipes the crapoff his face and begins to make his way through the statues. Proving to be more difficult for a Dwarf in spiked armor...

GAME: Lysos casts Hydraulic Push. Caster Level: 4 DC: 16

<OOC> Cryosanthia: moves him back 5'

"Dear stars you're an ugly one," Lysos mutters at the dog as she tries to get past it, still waving at people to move. Definitely thanking the hours she's put in now, she gets far enough ahead to skid and stop. Not far enough ahead to consider how this might be a poor idea. "Soakus!" she shouts, flinging a hand back at the dog, conjuring a forceful blast of water that slams into the dog and pushes it back a few steps.

GAME: Nels rolls 1d20+10: (13)+10: 23
GAME: Nels rolls 1d10+6: (10)+6: 16

Nels runs through the crowd, screaming at people to get out of the way. You'd think people would get out of the way of a screaming goblin with a thunderbelcher, but no, there's always someone, isn't there, who didn't get the memo. Nels plows straight into some orc's backside and stumbles back a couple steps, sighs, and goes around, dashing after the wolf while the orc slowly turns to see where Nels just was. Getting closer, he shoulders his weapon and fires. A smoky BOOM sounds again, and he wounds the wolf again.

GAME: Locien rolls diplomacy: (1)+8: 9 (EPIC FAIL)
GAME: Locien rolls diplomacy: (10)+8: 18

Locien stands and begins to chase after the...well, chase, though the path carved by the mayhem has begun to fill in with gawking crowds. "Please, let me through!" The Mourner calls, but his voice is mixed with the various cries and calls of the crowd. He begins to fight his way through the throng, taking a deep breath and yelling over the din with all his might. "Open the south road! Turn him from the bridge!" This, at least, is heard, and people yet to meet the canine face to face begin to scatter to the sides of the south street, making a more tempting path for a creature valuing speed and ease of movement.

GAME: Rocky rolls diplomacy: (10)+3: 13
GAME: Rocky rolls intimidate: (16)+2: 18

Rocky chuffs politely, and once more people are kind enough to move aside. Rushing, the large lizard isn't quite close enough to reach the canine, but he is rapidly, and loudly, comming up on the side. -Might- want to turn.

<OOC> Cryosanthia says, "Okay, 2 out of 3 isn't bad, so 1-2 turns south, 3 goes for bridge."

<OOC> Cryosanthia says, "Wuffie gets the crowd to move out of his way, DC10"

The wave of water gets the dog snapping at it, biting this strange foe. He digs in his paws, bolting and shaking the water from his eyes. People scatter, but hearing the adventurers, cluster in the direction of the bridge and leave the southern path open.

The granite sith's roar echoes off the statues in the park, and add a little more incentive. Turning away from it, the dog bolts out the south exit of the gardens. Everyone wisely out of the way of him and his jaws.

GAME: Cryosanthia rolls 1d20+7: (3)+7: 10 (Wuffie Acrobatics)

Armnar finally clears away from the statues and gets enough space to begin running at full speed in order to try and catch up to the others and the beast who has caused so much trouble.... and interrupted his lunch.

-=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--<* A11: Festival Grounds *>=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=-

The sweeping Festival Grounds serve many purposes. Along one side are a set of permanent bleachers, and at either end an archway. Each archway is carved in the style of a grand entry and marked with images of of Daeus, with rearing horse and flying pennon. Littering the grounds are places for archery, target practice.

The dog bursts into the Festival grounds, momentarily slowed by all the moving things.

"Come on, stop staring at it people and do something!" Lysos cries out to the crowds, still running as hard as she can... and definitely starting to tire now. She manages to get ahead of the dog once more, though she's panting now as she turns, holding her arms wide to at least try and convince the thing to turn around. "Someone stop it from escaping!"

Amazingly, some people actually start to listen. A group of crossbowmen, their weapons loaded for their next bout of target shots, decide together to be heroes. So they level their weapons and fire... apparently realizing that Lysos was in the way. Though a few bolts do manage to lodge themselves into the dog's hide, to get there some of them have to go through Lysos and her startled screams give some clue to how well they did that.

GAME: Nels rolls diplomacy: (5)+0: 5

<OOC> Nels says, "And misfire. *sigh*"

All the flags, all the movement, people everywhere. The dog is momentarily confused, and then the arrows start raining down. It snaps at them, which isn't surprising. That it catches some in its mouth is, it leaps and rips them out of the air. Despite this, several bolts and arrows find their targets, spearing his hide.

Nels runs straight into another backside, though he manages to stop short of running into the fellow, and he dodges around after hastily cramming powder and shot into his weapon. He shoulders and fires, but there is a hiss and puff of smoke that erupts in a gray cloud, and Nels sighs heavily, grumbing at his trusty dragobspitter being not-so-trustworthy. "That's it, I'm definitely getting a new one," he says with a scowl.

GAME: Locien rolls diplomacy: (6)+8: 14
GAME: Locien rolls athletics: (2)+-2: 0

Locien gets through the crowds in time to see the rain of arrows and its...bittersweet effects. He scowls at the general location of the indiscriminate archers, then runs onto the soft soil of the horsetrack, trying to flank the beast and reach the pincushion. The Sil is already winded by the time he steps foot on the grounds, however, and his efforts get him hardly better than halfway there.

GAME: Rocky rolls diplomacy: (12)+3: 15
GAME: Rocky rolls intimidate: (8)+2: 10

Rocky manages to get the crowd to clear enough to get out onto the field, growling challenge to the atypical dog. Well, it's supposed to be a challenge, growls are suprisingly subtle, and then there's the whole cross culture langauge barrier. Comes across more scary than taunting.

GAME: Cryosanthia rolls 1d20+7: (12)+7: 19

This way! That way! The dog dodges, dodges again. He even slides and rolls, attempting to be a difficult target and avoid the archery. These are not typical canine behaviours, unless they're very well combat trained. Despite its efforts, it doesn't make much forward progress and remains in range of all the others practicing on the Festival Grounds, who now enjoy the challenge of a live target.

Clutching at one of the new slashes in her shirt, a shirt that is slowly turning red in parts, Lysos stumbles back. "Stars, that hurts! Alright. You asked for it! Flambo!" The dog yelps! It's fur bursts into flame, a tall flame arching over it's haunches. It twists in place, snapping at the flames, and then arrows fall from the sky and bolts arrive on a shallower trajectory, pincushioning the beast.

It drops and rolls, putting out the flames and breaking off the arrow shafts. On it's feet again, it turns and looks towards Lysos. There's an eerie amount of recognition and hate in its eyes as it stares at her.

GAME: Nels rolls craft/gunsmithing: (12)+11: 23

Nels sighs as he looks at his weapon, and he hauls out one of his tools, this one to clear the fouled shot and spent powder from the barrel. He's pretty quick with his hands, luckily, but when he looks up, the dog is a long way off, and he has to decide: a chancy shot from range, or a much easier shot from close in. He opts for moving closer, and hurries up much closer to the burning dog.

Locien sees the beast take some real damage from Lysos' finger of file, then watches it turn its full attention on the caster. He steps from the track onto the field once more and begins to move straight toward Lysos, one hand going to the holy symbol on his chest. "My Lady, grand this one respite, turn her away from your door..." The strange wild dog finishes rolling around on the ground, flames extinguished, and gets to it's paws. So many things! Flags! Horses! Arrows! Lots of arrows coming for the eyes. It swivels its head around, looking for escape routes and seemingly can't find any.

There are those adventurers who won't stop following it, those it can see. With a low growl it prows towards them, forequarters bunching and rolling with intimidating strength. Yellow eyes burn in a darkened face, it stares, and it bares those teeth at the granitescale sith and the dark-haired tsuran.

It would be an intimidating display, except for the part where the growl goes high pitched and it coughs. Arrow to the throat will do it every time.

In the confusion of combat, a few things are clear. 'Stand down' and 'Stop shooting' mean, don't, generally. However, not everyone hears, and even if they do perhaps the arrow was already on its way, or the finger slipped. Accidents do happen, and the overconfident will take a chance.

A lot fewer arrows and bolts come the dog's way, sticking into the dirt. It takes several on its back, and the solid, half-ton sith-makar makes for a meaty target as well, although they don't strike too deep.

The unlucky tsuran sees the unpleasant sight of dots in the sky growing larger, arrows point on, and even though they're moving in slow motion she feels rooted to the spot, unable to get her body out of the way. That shield will hold, hopefully.

Until there's a swirl of salt and pepper fur in front of her, and all those arrows slam into the side of the wolf.

Nels has just gotten his thunderbelcher cleared and reloaded, which took most of his concentration, and he hasn't been paying close attention to events. So when he does look up, he's a bit confused. But he gets the general idea, and while he shoulders his weapon, just in case, he holds his fire for the moment.

Locien walks toward the commotion, still breathing heavily from his exertions, both hands upon the pyramid pendant now. "Know the peace Vardama offers...stay your rage for a time." He looks at the others gathered as the spell washes over them as well, speaking in gentle tones, some measure of attention still directed at holding the spell. "The woman's wounds...its fangs drip with lycanthropy, if I am not mistaken. This may not be the feral hunt it started out to be."

GAME: Rocky rolls intimidate: (10)+2: 12

Rocky glowers at the archers and thumps again, leaving a bit of a dent in the sod. "ENOUGH!" There's a bit more... heat.. to the sith's words. Then again there's also a few more arrows stuck in him. That could irritate a guy. All things considered, he's pretty mellow. Locien's spell may have something to do with that.

A lot to do with that.

The spell has tremendous effect, and reach. The mountain dwarf, trundling up to the group instead sighs, halts and takes a knee to rest. The calming sensations take him away, and he becomes lost in thought.

The strange dog, likewise is stopped in his tracks. After the arrows hit, he landed, paws dug in, about to bolt. Then, that doesn't seem like a good idea anymore. Instead, he sits. There is still a snarl of sorts on his muzzle, but the eyes have changed. Still intense, they have lost their glare, and curious looks are given towards Lysos, Rocky and Locien.

A Vardaman peace, without death.

Rocky moves to place himself between the arches and the wuff, just in case. "This One is not sure details, but think was much misunderstanding."

"Sorry about that."

"Why'd you want us ta shoot yer dog?"

"Move out of the targets, wouldya?"

"Clear!" - "It is NOT clear!" - "Oh."

The helpful archers and crossbowmen stand down and wait for the party to get clear.

Nels feels the wave of calm wash over him, and it affects him a bit more than the others. A bit more than that spell normally affects people, generally, the goblin yawns, puts down his gun, lays down on the ground wth an arm curled under his head, and begins to nod off.

"Indeed..." Locien affirms, nodding to Rocky. There remains a tension in his eyes, a side effect of the concentration he maintains. He looks then to Lysos, appraising her as if her former attacker were not still in fangs' reach. "Are you hurt seriously? I can provide healing, but I would have to release the charm I'm holding over us. I'm not entirely convinced the creature trusts us so completely to relent just yet."

Calm? Calm? Lysos is definitely not calm. Though Locien's earlier healing helped stop her blood from oozing in a few places, the pain is sitll very, very real. And there were people shooting. And the dog. And, "Why is everyone so relaxed?" she manages to sputter out. "I... oh. Mourner. THank you! That was you? Thank you. I should be okay." She turns around to get her first real good look at the dog, now. You know. Now that it's not running and jumping and dodging and weaving. "It looks weird."

GAME: Rocky rolls knowledge/arcana: Trained Use Only: 0

Rocky peers around a few moments, and chuffs softly. Whatever they do, middle of a shooting range isn't the best place for it. With a nod, the warrior caste starts to heard the small group off the field. "Walk. Walk. Towards wood seats... bleachers? ...clear arrow range." Along the way he goes to pick up Nels, set him on his back. Hardly be the first time a sleepy small green person rode up there. Though they usually have scales.

Locien smirks to Lysos, turning to face the dog. "I suppose. Considering from whence it escaped, I fear there are any number of reasons for that. But that is not my domain." The Speaker kneels upon one knee a respectful distance from the...dog, then slowly offers one hand, palms up. "If you can understand...or not, really...it would be helpful if you could come here. I can heal you." For the moment, the dog seems very relaxed even if it still has bared teeth. It's lips flick, and curl more when it is spoken about or looked at too closely, but that's the extent of its reaction. Its muscles are wrong, far too visible under fur that seems thin, and while it is bleeding some of those wounds should have been a lot more serious.

It turns its head, staring at the offered palm. Its eyes lift, warily watching Locien. A decision is made. It approaches then sits in front of the cleric, at arms length, close enough to be touched. Its lips never quite relax, so yellow teeth remain bared. Nels wakes up when Rocky picks him up, he yawns, mumbles, "Sorry about that," and picks up his gun. But it looks like the crisis is over, mostly, and he wonders, "Er. is the dog's owner here? Can he come get it? He was ... running after him, they nearly ran me over."

"Whew." Lysos finally does calm down now that it looks like people aren't about to die anymore. She takes a step to follow Rocky.. it's good advice, after all.. but then turns and watches Locien with the maybe-not-dog. "He has an owner?" she asks, having missed that part. "Well.. we made enough of a commotion. It probably won't be hard to find us."

Rocky chuffs quielty. "Guard, maybe. Think smart creature having owner is bad idea."

<OOC> Knowledge Domain Touch, Effective skill: 21

At the touch, the Vardaman knows this is absolutely a lycanthrope! In fact, he's a minorly famous criminal. A minor noble, who murdered a couple prostitutes, then his family when they were going to turn him in. Beronje, although the knowledge of his last name does not come. A mental image of the Alexandrian times briefly flashing, showing he was in the papers a couple years ago, convicted and his punishment was execution.

Those under the effects of the calming charm might begin to feel the enforced stillness flicker and wane; what replaces it is their own business. Locien, too notes the end of the ward nearing, and with one hand's worth of seconds to go, reaches forward, softly petting the dog across the top of the head. His eyes close while he administers the headpats, looking lost in focus, before his head lifts and eyes open precisely as the spells' effects drain away completely. He frowns, perplexed, then looks the dog in the eye, still petting if his hand remains attached. "You're looking spry for a dead man."

Rocky chuffs in amusement. "Lot of that going around."

The comment draws no comment from the dog. It's eyebrows move as the spell drops and the artificial calmness fades. Teeth are bared a little more, but no growls follow, nor other sounds. It watches Locien, waiting. One leg is shifted, a leg covered in blood from a gunshot wound.

Meanwhile, a dutiful wizard-guard is completely befuddled, searching the Tornmwrar bridge for evidence of the chase, delayed by the bridge being up.

Nels just waits, for now, this is out of his hands. He hasn't unloaded the gun yet, but he's not pointing it at anyone now. He;s curious how this will play out.

"Should we take him back?" Lysos asks, crouching down so she can look at the dog, eye to eye. From a distance.

Rocky considers, and offers belated introductions. "This One is called Rocky, Warrior Caste. Was many years beside Stream of Time... sssa, Halls of Waiting, is called in Softskin lands. Am uncertain what is to be done. But not fighting."

Locien tilts his head so that his voice carries back to the others better, though he does not face away from the beast, and he does not break his rhythmic petting. "If he has an owner, it is a darker thing than you might imagine. His name is Beronje. Resident of Alexandria, minor noble, murderer of prostitutes, then his family when called to task. Captured, tried...and executed several years ago. So the paper said, according to your library. Which leaves us...and me, in a delicate position, doesn't it?" The question seems to be directed to the beast as much as to the rhetorical ether.

GAME: Cryosanthia rolls 1d20+2: (14)+2: 16 (Wuffie Sense Motive)

Nels is now puzzled. "So wait," he says to Lucien. "Is this guy not a wolf? Or, like a werewolf?" Not that Nels can tell, it's why he's asking. "But if he's a murderer, did he break free from some cell? You said he was executed, is this a zombie werewolf?"

Rocky considers. "Is bad crime... but was killed for it once... should not die twice for one crime... maybe."

It twitches, the muscles along its shoulders clench, and there are tics of motion along it's side. Locien's words get draw its full focus. When he he finishes speaking, the eyes move, looking over Lysos, Nels, then Rocky.

Very slowly, he dips his head away from the Vardaman's hand, ducking out from under it. The dog... wolf... lycanthrope... slinks out of his sitting position to all fours and very slowly starts walking away.

Lysos rocks back on her crouched heels a little bit, her eyes widening. Something between horror and.... okay, it's just horror. And then the dog rises and starts walking away and.. "I don't know what the right thing to do here is," she admits. "He did save me, sort of," she points out. And actually points at one of the arrows on the ground. "What kind of life could he even have?"

Rocky snorts, considering a few moments, and rises, moving to walk to the side and a few paces behind the wuff. A guardian position. "Follow. Perhaps we will learn more."

Nels is still wildly confused now. But civic justice is not something he has any real need for, nor does he feel obligated to do anything based on what's happened before. But still he wonders, "Where's that idiot that chased him past me going out that building? What's -he- got to say?" Then he shrugs and will follow Rocky and the wolf to wherever they go.

Locien stops moving while the canine withdraws from his reach, then slowly steps back to a standing position at the same time Beronje turns away. He remains silent for a moment, brows furrowed. "Twice condemned, as man and beast." He pivots, facing sidelong both the departing lycanthrope and his companions of happenstance. "By the laws of this city, he should not leave this arena." What sort of life indeed. No answers are forthcoming from the dog, or various bystanders. A few of the people training on the festival grounds give a nod towards the party, the occasional, "Sorry", but otherwise return to their business.

Although, the do represent a lot of witnesses.

The dog continues to slowly walk towards the gates of the grounds. South, is the Temple District. Lots of families, lots of Temples, and occasionally, active and vigilant Paladins. Paladins who will most assuredly enforce the laws the lycanthrope appears to be flaunting.

At the gates, he stops and looks back at the group. His flanks bleed, his expression, such that it is, remains canine wariness.

The sith-makar's words make Lysos suddenly gasp and she scrambles up straight to her feet. "Follow! You're right! What if he was wrongly convicted!" Oh, boy.. here come the flights of fancy. "There are stories about this! Stars! Maybe he is going to show us the truth!" She starts moving quickly after Beronje-dog.

Nels wonders idly, "What's he going to show us that didn't convince the judge that convicted him before?" But he'll follow along. That way if he does try anything, he can start shooting again. And if not, he'll see what he can see."

Rocky hisses quietly. "This one does not know laws of this lands... but knows is more to be learned before justice can be found."

He's going to run. Werewolves, even if they start out as good people end up chaotic and evil from the disease. Their lives are usually violent, and short, and a lot of people tend to get killed collaterally. Beronje has very likely killed some of the people he was convicted for - why he's still alive isn't clear. There are sometimes cures, and the Arcanists guild does have an Anti-Magic Area for prisoners that would suppress it, so his sentence might have been changed. Most Paladin and some Rangers that see him will try to kill him, but he seems willing to risk that.

Only a very persuasive argument would convince a desperate fugitive not to act.

The guard who ran out after him, is no where to be seen, making additional information on the situation difficult to obtain.

Locien does not immediately move with the others, standing stock still, lost in thought, eyes locked upon the animal. Several long moments like this pass, till the Mourner shakes his head as if to clear it, and begins pursuit with a more urgent pace. "There is nothing without that can spare him, and he knows it. He seeks to flee. He cannot be let into the crowds again."

Nels can only shrug to Rocky. "I'm not bothered either way, to be honest. If the guard that chased him out of where he escaped from doesn't want him back and has vanished, himself, then who am I to stop him. He -did- say, though, that this guy killed people in yhe process of escaping. What I don't want is to get blamed if this guy kills again. I would not be happy with that."

Rocky chuffs. "Move the crowds. He flees. Where? For what? To die free?"

The tsuran half turns to look at the elf while still moving after the dog. "Oh, Mourner, look... he is absolutely waiting for us and asking us to follow. There is a mystery to be solved!" She pauses, then nods sharply. "So we follow, keep him from hurting anyone, and find out who really did it!"

South of the Festival grounds is the Temple District. It's possible someone has gone and warned the Temple Guards, or that the recent troubles and demons appearing at the centra fountain have made them more alert.

Nels says, "Is he a zombie? Was he rezzed? Did they cut his head off, but he failed to die?"

The goblin would like to at least capture him, and have it all out before a magistrate with whatever truth spells they use. "If he was a werewolf and sentenced to death, but they forgot the silver guilotine blade, then they haven't really carried out the sentence. If he got rezzed, then it's different. I don't know enough to convict him, but I do know enough that I'd like him not to get away."

Rocky wants to know more before he commits to a choice. "Temple of Green...Diana? Priests speak wolf. Flee... flee where? Seek vengance? Seek life feeding on five legged mutant bunnies in Felwood, helping thin twisted population and cull the blight?"

Lysos says, "Don't run, stay with us."

Good questions, which need good answers. Beronje does not speak, his head turns towards the gates. His sides swell with a deep breath. It's obvious to everyone now, he's going to run, and he can hear what's being said.

When the werewolf takes a deep breath and prepares to bolt, Nels thumbs the hammer back on his thunderbelcher and says, "If you run, this will become a hunt. If you want justice, stay. If you run, we will assume you're guilty and fleeing."

The vardaman considers a Come to Vardama meeting with the Arcanists about him, petitioning someone higher up the priesty food chain to be involved...all the better if they represent Eluna. Capturing would be best.

Locien shakes his head, left hand reaching back to grip the handle of his khopesh, though it remains sheathed for now. He continues forward, just short of breaking into a jog. "Lycanthropes are not simply beasts. They are driven by unnatural, fell impulses. There may be hope yet for the being within the beast, but we must first see to the safety innocents of the city. When we have him secure, the Arcanists can answer what questions that remain."

Her face falls a little bit as the canine escapee turns to run, Lysos's theory seeming to fall apart right then. Though, if she stopped to be honest with herself, she wouldn't be surprised. Still, "Oh, come ON! Not this again.. Stop, doggy! Where are you going to go? If you run away they will just find you and kill you! If you come with us... I think it's your best chance. Beronje."

The strike arcs expertly, but Beronje's footing is too sure, leaping lightly over the sickle blade.

GAME: Cryosanthia rolls a cmb Rocky: (1)+10: 11 (EPIC FAIL)

Rocky isn't normally one for flying tackles, but he's willing to make an exception in this case. It's also been a while since he was willing to sit on someone to get them to hold still. Wuffs just bring that out in him, apparently. Not that it's quite so simple, with the running, the dodging, the bit with the squirrel, and the eventual capture. But at the end of the day, he helped, and feels okay with the choices made along the way.

The werewolf rushes into the Temple District in a flat out run. The Hue and Cry is raised, and the goblin's shot is like the starting gun for a new chaotic chase. The wolf is shot in the rump again, spurring him to greater heights of speed and pain.

A wave of water slows him very effectively, as Lysos' hydraulic push hits him in the face, slamming him back towards the group.

The goblin comes as a complete surprise, Beronje snaps at him, his teeth closing on empty air as Nels climbs up. Undaunted, the werewolf chooses to simply run with a rider. Perhaps it will add some confusion.

A khopesh between the legs is a tricky, trippy thing, but the werewolf is unusually deft with his feet and avoides the edge and falling.

It is the half-ton of lizard that finally stops the runaway wolf. The granite-scale leaps on, grabs, and takies him to the ground with a corresponding yelp from the wolf.

Then, something changes, the balance is tipped. Nels, Rocky, are easily within reach of dirty, encrusted teeth. He doesn't bite. The werewolf is wriggly, squirming free, and just as he's about to the struggling stops. Perhaps it is the approaching paladins, ready with blades and spells.

He stops, gives up, accepts fate and waits silently, captured with the assistance of the party.

Lysos finally catches up to the dogpiled... dog... wolf, bending over slightly to put her hands on her knees and huff and puff a bit. After she straightens, looks at Beronje. At Rocky. Then at Nels. "You know... you still look weird as a goblin boy."
