(Scene intro)

It is another day at the guild hall and someone has just posted a new list jobs that are up for grabs for those who are interested. Although some of the jobs have to be done on far away lands, and some that are not within your pay requirement, there is one particular job that suits your need or interest.

The job is for someone named Albertus Coinspiel. He lives in the noble district and the amount of money that he is offering is good. Not obscene, but something to tide you over for the next mission. The job he wants done is about clearing an old, run-down property of his of some annoying, illegal residents.

Interested trouble-shooters are required to meet with 'lord' Coinspiel in his manor. The location is disclosed in the advertised job.

GAME: Yrqemm rolls diplomacy: (7)+6: 13 (Gathering information)

You paged Yrqemm with 'Not a lot, that roll. If you decide to take the job, you spend a bit of time finding out about your employer. Your sources tell you that the person is a bit of a loon, that is another term for 'eccentric' in your parlance. He has been secluding himself from most people, and only a few servants of his are allowed to actually meet him. He is old and probably not long for the world. Some say that his health is fading and may already be on his deathbed. He has a large sum of money that people say he has buried somewhere.'

Having perused the boards almost on a daily basis, Yrqemm is well pleased to find something suitable that doesn't involve certain death or camping. He thus gears up his few belongings and makes his way towards the manor.

Kroth punches things, and kicks things, and general stuff like that. Of course, money is helpful with many things, so sometimes he takes jobs that are not obviously about punching or kicking things. He has responded to the inquiry, with hopes someone else will be able to handle the thinking parts of the job.

The green-skinned Uraug saw the posting as well and is now sauntering up the entrance to the mansion. Armed and armored, she looks ready for work.

At the mansion, the resident butler opens the door and looks at all of you. "Yes?" He asks those gathered, his nose tilted slightly upwards.

Tiasa has decided to keep herself busy and learn more of the local area by taking local jobs. She finds herself reaching the manor and glancing around a bit. She dips her head and gives a toothy grin as the door is opened.

"I....err, we," begins Yrqemm, "are here in response to a post at the Adventurers' Guild. Something about clearing a property of illegal residents for Lord Coinspeil?" he says, crossing his arms and leaning to one side to let the butler see the people gathered behind him.

Kroth nods, "Yes, we were told you have troubles."

The butler arches one of his brows, his lips set in a thin line. He rolls his eyes before stepping aside for the group to enter the building. "Follow me." He says after he closes the door. He leads the group through a series of corridor and stairs that allows those present to see all the stuff inside the mansion. There are a lot of stuff on display, or should be on display. Most of the furniture are covered in white sheets, and even the paintings are covered as well. But some are not as covered as most and the shiny parts of something expensive can be seen.

It does not take long before the group is brought before a large door that presumably leads to the lord's chamber. The butler knocks on the door. A raspy voice calls out, "Who is it?".

"Your 'workers' have arrived, m'lord." says the butler.

There was no answer for a while and the group has to wait a bit. Just when someone was about to ask what is going on, lord Coinspiel makes a reply, "Send them in."

The butler looks at the group, his nose still raised, and opens the door to his lord's chamber...

"After you," says Yrqemm to everyone, sort of mocking the butler in his bow, motioning everyone in, but doing so in a playful way, rather than trying to offend the man.

Kroth doesn't bother with any mocking or jokes, he simply follows along quietly. He will not say anything when they finally go inside, he is content to wait things out.

Tiasa makes her way in and looks around as they go, she hasn't been in such a fancy home before.

Uraug reaches up as a flapping of feathers alights on her shoulder and turns into a tall, gray owl before they head in. Walking through the house the orc woman lets out a low, impressed whistle at the various covered goods in the house.

Inside Lord Albertus Coinspeil's bedroom chamber, one would notice that all the curtain covers have been drawn close, making the room dark and somber. Only a few lit candles give the room any illumination. There are furniture here, not covered by any sheet, but dust has covered them as if they have not been touched for a long time. There is a big bed on the far end of the room. Lying on the bed, with sheets brought up to his chest, is the lord of the house, Albertus Coinspeil. He gestures for the group to get closer to him. "Come closer. My eyes can't see that far."

Yrqemm closes the gap, coming closer and taking the suffering man's hand in his. "Are you in pain, M'Lord?" he asks, sounding concerned.

Kroth approaches, frowning slightly, is the guy super obese? Is this Dale the Whale? Or, well, is he just crippled. Kroths curiosity will have him taking a look to see what he can, dim light doesn't bother him, he can see in the dark.

Uraug strokes her owl as she approaches the bed, nodding at the Lord. She glances around the room, taking in the details, and maybe casing exits, but also attentive to the situation.

Albertus is a very old man, and his skin palor suggest that he may even be terminally sick. He almost looks like skin and bones.

Lord Coinspeil eyes every member of the group critically, but doesn't say a word of what he thinks. He simply nods his head and says, "So, you all are not averse to kicking out some unwanted home-stayers, are you? That is good. I've been needing for a place to be cleared out so I can have some stuff taken from there. See to it that you get rid of them at all cost. And don't ask any questions. I am sure that the money I am offering is enough to buy your cooperation and silence."

Tiasa cocks her head to the side, that doesn't sound right, but then they just need to get rid of the people doesn't say how.

"You wish us to simply drive them out or do more than that?" ask Yrqemm, still sounding concerned.

Albertus replies in as cold and as uncaring a voice as possible, "Get rid of them." Even in his sickly state, he is still able to put some expression on his face.

Uraug grunts and shakes her head at the Lord's explanation, but then nods at Yrqemm's comment. "I don't mind kickin' out trespassers. But that ain't a 'killin offense'."

Kroth shrugs, "Your request is simple, remove the habitants so you can remove some things. After that is done, will you be needing the property?"

Yrqemm pages: would it be appropriate/ok to roll Bluff to get him to really trust me more than he should, maybe give me more info than he intends to ? GAME: Yrqemm rolls bluff: (5)+10: 15 to benthus

Albertus draws a breath and says, "I thought I have purchased your services without questions. Are you not from the adventurers guild? If you don't like they job I am offering you, you can step out of the room. My butler will escort you outside. As for my property, that is none of your concern. Your only job is to do what I have told you to do."

Kroth smirks a bit, "I can do your job, I just need to know how much force to apply to it. If the inhabitants are to be encouraged to 'never' return...that requires a different tactic most likely."

Yrqemm nods along with Kroth, seeing what Coinspiel's response is to the Oruch's line of inquiry before adding anything to the conversation.

Albertus smiles at Kroth, "'Never' is a wonderful idea, sir. Make it so."

"Excellent," replies Yrqemm, "Well sir, if you would give us directions and any information you think would aid us in doing a better and quicker job of it, we'll be on our way."

Uraug sighs and just nods.

Kroth nods, "Yes. We can handle this, it is lawfully your property, therefore it is your right to declare who resides there."

Albertus turns his head to look at Yrqemm and nods very slowly, "My butler will give you the details." He shifts his attention to the door and declares, "Pugsworth, these are the people I want to take care of my problem. See to it that they know what they need to know."

The door opens and the butler steps inside. He bows his head subserviently and says, "As you wish, m'lord." He ushers everyone else to step outside the room. He closes it as soon as everyone is outside. He takes the group to the study room, which looks like a big library. There he discusses the details of the job.

"Lord Coinspeil has several estates in the noble district. But there is one property of his that has been encroached by...'invaders'. The people use to be servants of the lord, but they decided to... 'live' in the house permanently. Despite many efforts to have them leave, they always find a way to get back in. It is your job to make sure that they no longer do so. The lord has many plans for the place." The butler gives you the location of the problem building. "Now, if you will excuse me, I have some work to do. And I believe you do, too." He opens the study room's back door, leading outside.

The group arrives at an old, unused building in a location far from any other residential building. All the curtains of the windows have been drawn down so nothing can be seen inside. The place looks pretty much deserted, and there appears to be no sign of anything or anyone having passed through the place in a long while. Which beggars the question 'Where are these unwanted resident?'

The door to the big building lies ahead of you.

Kroth looks around for a few moments, then walks up to the door, checking to see if its unlocked.

Tiasa cocks her head to the side and keeps her eyes open trying to keep alert, who knows what to expect, for all she knows it could be something surprising here.

On the way to the house Uraug securely stows her shield on her back and leaves her scimitar in its scabbard in favor of her long quarterstaff. She stands in front of the house with the others and grunts. "There's no need for killing, if they let us avoid it. Agreed? I don't see anything wrong with just scaring them off." She clunks her heavy staff on the cobblestones and grins. She squints at Kroth knocking on the door but doesn't seem to disapprove.

The door is opens up after a bit of resistance. A loud creaking noise is made as the door's hinges are rusty. The waiting room is pretty sparse, with a table on the side and an old painting on the side wall. The room ahead is closed by another door. Even at the waiting room alone, the place is already dark...

Yrqemm pages: I'd like to send my monkey familiar up the side of the house, to spy and let us know if there's anyone in ambush. Is that doable?

You paged Yrqemm with 'Sure. Roll your familiar's perception check.'

Kroth looks around for a moment, then back at the group. He shrugs and steps into the building, wary of traps of course. He is curious about the residents, and figures they will encounter them soon enough.

GAME: Yrqemm rolls 1d20+6: (18)+6: 24 to benthus

Uraug peers into the darkness past Kroth and finally tromps up the stairs to follow him inside.

Yrqemm glances up and down the building, then makes a shrill little whistle. Seemingly from out of nowhere, a small Capuchin monkey sprints over, climbing up to his shoulder. He gives it a little treat while muttering something, and then the little monkey is scrambling up the side of the building to explore...

Tiasa lets her eyes adjust as it gets darker, taking in what is inside, "Watch, this feels...wrong." she mutters.

Kroth frowns as Tiasa mentions that the place feels wrong, finally he shrugs and starts slipping on his brass knuckles. "Wrong or not, we are here to empty the house."

Once everyone has stepped inside the waiting room, the main door draws shut. A click can be heard from behind... The room is very dark for anyone without dark vision.

<OOC> Kroth says, "Any furniture in this room, and windows?" <OOC> Benthus says, "In the waiting room, only a table and a picture on the wall. The windows are boarded shut." <OOC> Benthus says, "There is a door at the far end of the room." <OOC> Kroth says, "I would like to try to smash out the boards/window :)" <OOC> Benthus says, "Are you sure? This may be counted against your pay." <OOC> Kroth says, "He didnt ask for the house to be intact" <OOC> Kroth says, "He said get rid of the inhabitants so he can recover something" <OOC> Benthus says, "True. Go ahead."

Kroth looks around a few moments, then moves over to one of the boarded windows. He draws back a fist, taking a deep breath and focusing on his Dragon stance. Then he throws a brass knuckled fist at the boards and windows...

GAME: Kroth rolls 1d6+3+1+2: (6)+3+1+2: 12

The boarded windows take some damage. But it continues to hold.

Nodding at Kroth, Uraug says, "Yeah, if everything were right, the house would be empty and Coinspiel wouldn't need to pay us." She pauses to peer at the picture by the door.

<OOC> Uraug says, "Who's in the pic?" <OOC> Benthus says, "Some unknown man standing behind a woman and a young boy." <OOC> Uraug says, "Not Coinspiel then? :)" <OOC> Benthus says, "It does look a bit like Coinspiel, but the picture is that of a younger man."

Tiasa cocks her head, "Not right in that if there were residents, shouldn't we see them." she says and then shakes her head as the door closes.

Kroth lands what he considers a good blow, but the wood is sturdier than he expected. He frowns, "I would like an open path to escape, if no one else disagrees, I shall continue to smash this. Unless someone has an earthbreaker hidden in their pocket?"

"Hey," Uraug says quietly, holding up a palm to Kroth. "Take it easy. He hired us to kick out the squatters, not the windows. I want to get paid after this." She nods at the next door. "Is that one locked?"

Yrqemm pages: Any news from my monkey btw :) You paged Yrqemm with 'It hears something moving inside the room ahead of you.'

<OOC> Benthus says, "Okay, perception checks please." GAME: Uraug rolls perception: (18)+8: 26 GAME: Tiasa rolls perception: (8)+6: 14 GAME: Kroth rolls perception: (6)+7: 13 GAME: Yrqemm rolls perception+2: (12)+7+2: 21

You paged Uraug with 'You manage to hear something other than Kiroth punching the boarded window. You hear something moving in the other room ahead. The room that is presently blocked by a closed door.'

<OOC> Yrqemm says, "We established that door was locked, yes?" <OOC> Benthus says, "The second door leading inside? No." <OOC> Benthus says, "But the door leading outside... well, did anyone pose trying to open it?" <OOC> Yrqemm says, "Don't think so, I didn't :)" <OOC> Kroth says, "Nope, I'm more concerned on an exit strategy :)" <OOC> Yrqemm says, "I think he means that door, Kroth" <OOC> Yrqemm says, "as in, are we all assuming it's locked but no one has checked"

Yrqemm pages: OK, but the thing we hear is on OUR side of the door? :) You paged Yrqemm with 'Otherside.' You paged Yrqemm with 'Presumably, the living room.'

GAME: Yrqemm casts Light. Caster Level: 2 DC: 13 "There's something on the other side of that door," says Yrqemm, warning everyone who may not have heard it, and doing so in a whisper, as he casts Light on a copper coin and palms it, extinguishing the light for now, but letting everyone know it's available.

"Sh-sh-sh," Uraug hisses, dropping to a combat crouch while staring at the vestibule's inner door. Her staff is proper upright and her free hand gestures to the others. "Something is /moving/ in there..." she whispers.

Kroth turns his attention from the window, he doesn't say anything, merely shrugs and looks ready to see whats going to come out of the door.

Tiasa nods, "Well its probably what we are supposed to get to vacate." she shakes her head a bit.

Yrqemm draws one of his rapiers with his free hand and takes a step back and to the side of the door to the living room (presumably).

Everything is silent...

You paged (Yrqemm, Uraug) with 'There is a the sound of something panting and growling behind the inner door...' To (Uraug, Benthus), Yrqemm pages: does it look like the door opens into our room or swing out ? You paged (Yrqemm, Uraug) with 'Swings out.'

"Get ready," Uraug says quietly. "There's an animal of some kind on the other side of this." She's backed up to the inner door, holding the doorknob while looking at her guild-mates. "Let me see if I can calm it down, but be ready to cover me."

<OOC> Benthus says, "Alright, last chance for people to cast their spells." To (Uraug, Benthus), Yrqemm pages: ok, i'll position myself so that if it charges in, i'll be behind it, or at least flank it. That's the hope :) Long distance to (Yrqemm, Uraug): Benthus nods. <OOC> Uraug says, "Detect magic please" <OOC> Benthus says, "There is no magic inside the room."

Kroth nods, and gets ready for a fight, taking his dragon stance and cracking his neck, just like all the cool folks do before a fight.

Tiasa is just ready always, she doesn't have any apparent weapons, but the sith looks quite alert.

Uraug turns the knob and swings the door open fast, tense and ready for what comes.

GAME: Yrqemm rolls initiative: Roll: 1 + Bonus: 3 = Total: 4 GAME: Uraug rolls initiative: Roll: 20 + Bonus: 2 = Total: 22 GAME: You roll initiative for Uninvited: Roll: 17 + Bonus: +4 = Total: 21 GAME: Tiasa rolls initiative: Roll: 3 + Bonus: 3 = Total: 6 GAME: Kroth rolls initiative: Roll: 9 + Bonus: 2 = Total: 11

The moment Uraug opens the door, a powerful stench wafts inside the room. It is so horrible that anyone of weaker constitution would be gagging uncontrollably...

<OOC> Benthus says, "Everyone roll fort DC15." GAME: Kroth rolls fort: (14)+7: 21 GAME: Yrqemm rolls fortitude: (7)+1: 8 GAME: Uraug rolls fort: (4)+5: 9 GAME: Tiasa rolls fortitude: (16)+6: 22

You paged (Uraug, Yrqemm) with 'You see: three sickly looking creatures of pallid skin tone and sharp pointed teeth staring back at you. +roll knowledge/religion to find out what it is.' You paged (Uraug, Yrqemm) with 'It is definitely not natural.'

<OOC> Benthus says, "Surprise round... Uraug, uninvited and Yrqemm will each have a standard action this round." <OOC> Benthus says, "Uraug first." <OOC> Uraug says, "And I can assume it doesn't look like a normal animal of some kind at least?" <OOC> Benthus says, "Definitely." <OOC> Yrqemm says, "Are Ura and me still gagged in this standard action round?" <OOC> Uraug says, "Ok, I'll attack with my staff" <OOC> Yrqemm says, "not gagged, sickened i mean :)" <OOC> Uraug says, "Stupid - I didn't prep shillelagh today :p" <OOC> Benthus says, "You are pretty much gagging for the entire encounter, Yrqemm. The condition lasts at least 2 minutes. That's like 20 turns, and I'd be mortified if we go that long." <OOC> Yrqemm laughs, "Gotcha. I just meant if it had gone into effect in the surprise round :) <OOC> Benthus says, "Oh, yes, it is in effect." <OOC> Benthus says, "The creatures are at 20 feet, 30 feet and 60 feet away."

GAME: Uraug rolls BAB+strength: (11)+2+3-2: 14 <OOC> Benthus says, "Miss."

Uraug's face wrinkles in revulsion but rushes forward anyway. Her oaken staff smashes down but only gets floorboards instead. "Gah, this is disgusting!"

<OOC> Benthus says, "The creatures begin to surround Uraug. That is all they do for the surprise round." <OOC> Benthus says, "You have a standard action to do something on this surprise round." <OOC> Benthus says, "And please don't say 'close the door'." <OOC> Yrqemm says, "Can I cast grease past Uraug so it doesn't affect her, but at least poses a challenge for the other 2 that have yet to close in, then maybe we can pick em off? I have a range of 35. And yea, poor Uraug if I closed the door haha."

GAME: Yrqemm attempts to cast Grease but fails due to ASF. <OOC> Benthus says, "That is so unfortunate!"

Yrqemm looks shocked as the sounds on the other side of the door are revealed to be what he can assume is only some sort of undead or three. Then the wave of rotting stench hits him, and as he's trying to recover from that, he starts to gag, even as Uraug is rushing the closest entity.

Hoping to help her, he casts a simple spell, but as he's doing so, he retches violently, losing his concentration.

GAME: Benthus reverses the initiative order.

Kroth takes a small blow, but manages to return with one of his own, a final kick sends the creature falling to the ground, and Kroth holds himself ready for anything else that might be around.

Uraug heaves a sigh of relief and closes her eyes when the creature dies in her vines. After a second, the vines begin to shrivel and retract. Unfortunately for everyone present, the relief also seems to be the end of Uraug's ability to hold back. The oruch turns to the corner and vomits noisily onto the floor.

Gagging one more time, and thus destroying one of Coinspeil's sofas, Yrqemm wipes his mouth with the back of his wrist and while trying not to inhale too deeply despite those excertios says, "I heard a rumour about this Coinspeil: apparently, there's a rumour he buried some treasure around here...probably worth looking into before we head back, hey?" He seems to be addressing the whole room when he says that.

<OOC> Yrqemm says, "Guys, i'm divulging that info so you can do what you will with it. It's 2 am here and I've got an early start in the am, so I'm going to go shortly. Would anyone be willing/able to proxy me?"

You paged Kroth with 'You hear the faintest of sound somewhere ahead of you. It sounds like two metal plates scraping against each other.'

Kroth frowns, looking down the hall, he reaches up a hand, tapping his ear and then pointing ahead.

As the group leaves the living room and enters into a new room, your realize that you have stumbled into the dining area. It is slightly smaller than the living room, but just a tad. The noise of two metal plates scraping together is heard again. It seems to be located behind the next door which you all presume to be the kitchen area...

The door is slightly ajar...

GAME: Uraug casts Cure Light Wounds. Caster Level: 3 DC: 14 GAME: Uraug rolls 1d8+3: (3)+3: 6 GAME: You damaged Kroth for -6 points. 24 remaining.

Uraug and Yrqemm both take a moment to catch their breath and settle their stomachs. When Kroth notes the sound he hears, Uraug nods and moves quietly to rest her hand on his shoulder, flooding him with healing power. Then she nods at him and then to the door, indicating he should go first.

Kroth nods his thanks as he is healed, then he moves over to the door that the noise is coming from. He holds out a hand toward the handle, waiting for everyone else to get in position to fight whatever it is behind it.

Tiasa has shrank back to normal size. "Well I don't mind getting these things out of here." she says and then is just trying to look around a bit. She blinks as she hears the sounds.

<OOC> Benthus says, "perception check again." GAME: Uraug rolls perception: (6)+8: 14 GAME: Tiasa rolls perception: (7)+6: 13 GAME: Uraug rolls 7: (1)+7: 8 (EPIC FAIL) GAME: Kroth rolls perception: (20)+7: 27

You paged Kroth with 'You detect that the sound is coming from somewhere below the other room. There could be a secret hatch on the floor leading to an underground room? Probably the cellars.'

Peering through the narrow slit of the partly closed door, the group tries to see what is on the other side. But there is no movement whatsoever than can be detected, but the noise is obviously coming from that area.

Kroth frowns, then taps his ear again, and points down, at the floor. He opens the door slowly, moving in, and pointing down at the floor again.

The scratching noise is definitely beneath the floor.

Frowning as well, Uraug watches as Kroth goes and then peers more closely at the floor as well, looking for any loose floorboards and such.

The floor of the kitchen is covered in marble, except for a spot that is covered by a carpet...

Kroth will of course move over and pull at the corner of the carpet, likely assuming there is a trap door.

Yrqemm follows Uraug's eyeline and notes the carpet on the floor, reaching out carefully to check for traps, and pull it back if it seems safe.

Tiasa cocks her head to the side and is wary so watches for them to move things. There is indeed a trapdoor on the floor once the carpet is removed. The latch is locked by an improvised locking device-- A fork wedged through the latch.

<OOC> Uraug says, "Can I have Yrq check for traps?" <OOC> Benthus says, "Perception check." GAME: Uraug rolls 7: (15)+7: 22 You paged Uraug with 'yrqeem finds nothing out of the ordinary on the trap door.'

Having checked the trap door thoroughly, Yrqemm nods to himself and hauls the thing open, scrabbling back and getting himself out of the way of anything inside in the process.

As soon as the door is opened, the sound of moaning can be heard. Something is climbing up the stairs towards you!

There are no more hostile creatures coming up the stairs to attack you. You wait a bit just to be sure, but there is absolute silence from below. Someone goes down and checks. The person realizes that this is the house's underground cellar, or food storage room. But the things that are being hanged for storage are not the usual livestock you find in a farm. Not sheep, nor pig parts, nor cows, nor chicken. What is hanged on the hooks are dead corpses.

After this shocking revelation has passed, the person investigating downstairs spots what looks like a chest. A sturdy and ornately decorated one. Inside the chest are several expensive stuff. You suspect that this is what your employer is after.

<OOC> Uraug says, "Eewwww, Coinspiel just voided our contract"" <OOC> Uraug says, "I assume this would be illegal in the city?"" <OOC> Benthus says, "Roll knowledge/local to see if it is so." <OOC> Benthus says, "That is if you have it." <OOC> Uraug says, "I do not" <OOC> Benthus says, "You may be right." <OOC> Benthus says, "But in any case, you have successfully completed your job. What now?" <OOC> Uraug says, "Well, it violates Uraug's rules so yeah. Taking stuff and reporting this dude to the guard" <OOC> Benthus says, "And your case is...?" <OOC> Uraug says, "He's got corpses in his basement" <OOC> Uraug says, "No city lets you keep human remains around" <OOC> Benthus says, "Was he the recent occupant of the house?" <OOC> Uraug says, "Oohh" <OOC> Uraug says, "Good point" <OOC> Uraug says, "Hmm" <OOC> Benthus says, "It would be so nice if you knew a bit of knowledge/religion." <OOC> Uraug says, "Sure would!" <OOC> Benthus says, "That would explain things a bit." <OOC> Uraug says, "My bard got approved an hour into this scene XD" <OOC> Uraug says, "So yeah, I guess I won't be taking his stuff, but I can't speak for the others" <OOC> Benthus says, "You can talk to your bard next time and ask him about these things. If he takes 10, he will likely learn that the three creatures you attacked first were ghasts, and the last 7 creatures you fought were zombies. And the bard might also know that ghast likes to eat decayed corpses." <OOC> Benthus says, "Oh, the three people on the painting? (points at the three ghasts)" <OOC> Benthus says, "People that Albertus has been sending to the house have been paralyzed by the ghasts and brought to the cellar to be eaten at a later date. Some of the corpses animated and became zombies." <OOC> Uraug says, "No reports from me" <OOC> Uraug says, "And no thieving. My vote would just be to return and report back to Coinspiel"

On your return to the manor, you heard tragic news about the owner. Lord Albertus Coinspeil just passed away a few hours after you left his chamber. Thank you all for participating. Sorry it took so long, but we manage to get there in the end."
