The Sinkhole, Part I

PrP Type: Standard (combat)

Summary: When adventurers go to check out the appearance of a sudden sinkhole on the Alexandrian border, they find an ancient Kulthian ruin that reads "For the Study of Creatures". Getting inside proves to be the first trick.

Participants: Kidda, Thanix, Dragomir, Samson, Lyrana, Lilyth

Encounters: Trapped Puzzle Door (CR 5) and 2 x Medium Animated Object - human sized statues(CR 5)

It's a long way down.

The sinkhole itself has torn out quite the chunk of land, some distance away from the actual edge of the village. Dirt and wooden planks lie everywhere at the bottom of the hole, at least a hundred feet down, that looks as if the land simply slid away from itself. As you peer down into it, you can all see the corners and edges of what look to be a building of some kind, with a rounded top and sharp square corners. It's much, much bigger than any edifice in the village, but the dirt coats everything, making it difficult to ascertain from here just what the material to make it was.

At least the weather is decent -- blue skies and the odd fluffy white cloud have followed you all the way from the city, and the roads are dry and easily passable; a gusty breeze blows a few dead leaves into the depths of the hole. There are a number of villagers standing around not far from the edge of the sinkhole, talking among themselves and looking worried as they watch the group.

<OOC> Aldean says, "Free RP, everyone."
<OOC> Kidda says, "What village?"
<OOC> Aldean says, "The village is named Storren's Run and is located near the Alexandrian order with Sendor."
<OOC> Aldean says, "Er, border."

Bright blue eyes gleam from within a face of impassive gunmetal grey. Thanix stares into the depths of the crevice, as impassive as any such being beneath the sun-- Warforged, standing silent sentinel. "My memory is limited," he admits, voice a resonant thrum. "But I have no knowledge of encounter such as this before."

Samson looks around, frowning a bit and then peering down into the hole. He grunts faintly, "I suppose we need to tie some rope to something and climb down there, it ain't gonna explore itself, and thats what we are paid for."

Kidda, in her wanderings and learning the region, has found herself - somehow - peering down into this sinkhole. Red eyebrows raised, she moves back away from the edge, and looks over at the gunmental grey Thanix. "Nor have I seen the like," she agrees. "This... what stood here, I wonder?" she muses, and moves to ask one of the locals that very question, picking one who is neither anicent nor a child, to get a little background.

From afar, Kidda activates 'detect evil' as a background process.

Lyrana has arrived with the others to the village. She was contracted to provide healing for the most part and other things that a cleric might be needed for. The female looking wargolem glances around and then down into the hole, "THis could prove interesting." she says and then shakes her head and looks around towards the others.

Lilyth looks down into the sinkhole, tilting her head at it. "It doesn't even look like there is much of a bottom to it..." She wanders over to the villagers. "When did this show up and what can you tell us about what happened right after it was discovered and how it was discovered?"

It's easy enough to find such, and the farmer sort that Kidda ends up selecting scratches at a full brown beard. "Just a pasture, miss," he answers, looking her up and down with some skepticism. "'Tis Her own blessing none of the animals were caught in it, they're all accounted fer ..." He looks worriedly down into the sinkhole. "Right smart creatures," he adds as Lilyth wanders over; he seems to have taken the role of spokesman for the group. "It jes' appeared. Took a right lot o' grass with it too," he adds worriedly. "Outbuildings ... maybe it's a sign."

You paged Kidda with 'None that you sense.'

"Ancient ruins underneath an unassuming village." Dragomir declares with a lively tone and a broad grin, letting his sizeable backpack hit the ground with a loud thump and clatter of metal inside. "And I am paid to explore it too! Such a life we lead, eh?" he adds, glancing at his comrades, before bending down to open up the backpack and start fishing out his Gear.

Samson snorts a bit, "Yes well, keep that enthusiasm. No telling whats down there, lots of things like to live in places like this. Well, live might be the wrong word."

The tall wargolem peers into the hole, finally turning back as if he had seen enough. "My presence has been requested to add metal to the adventuring force," Thanix states, pausing with a glance towards Lyrana. "Additional metal. I do not carry gear for spelunking, however. Still, I am optimized to sentient-normal standards." He pauses, crossing his arms. "I will stand, and await your readiness to begin."

"I sense naught of wickedness in this," Kidda says, flashing her own trademark grin at Dragomir. She is already armed and armoured; though her bracers declare her allegiance to Serriel, with a crossed pair of lances over a shield, embossed in the leather, she is not carrying a lance today, but a longsword and a bow. "I've rope, at any rate," she tells the others, "and I wager I'm lighter weight than most of the rest of us," and she chuckles.

Lilyth nods to the farmer and looks back down into the hole. "Well... if we're going to find out what is under there, we better start going, right?" she looks to the other adventurers.

Lyrana nods, "Down down into the depths we go, tredge on and discover if we will return or not." she looks around and then nods, "Rope is probably a good start."

"Right then," Kidda nods, and looks the others in the group over. "I'm not going to be strong enough to anchor the rope up here," she says, looking around for a boulder or something to tie a rope off to. Another glance down the hole, and she adds, "probably need a couple fifty-foot lengths, maybe a third to make sure it's anchored well enough to hold some of you lot," she nods to Dragomir, fishing out a rope from her pack.

Samson looks around to find something to secure the rope, "We need something sturdy enough to hold the metal mens weight. Thats a lot of strain...also, they go first, if they fall, I don't want them landing on me."

Within the backpack is Dragomir's titan armor and a pair of arcane-powered hydraulic gauntlets that connect to the shoulders and into a dynamo that straps to his back. All this is assembled and suited up within a couple minutes, leaving his backpack remarkably lighter with just some spare parts, a few minor contraptions, and something else that's hard to recognize. But no rope. "I am no expert at climbing, but I will assist where needed." he remarks.

The farmer eyes Kidda skeptically, but moves away, and begins to shoo people away from the hole. In typical herd fashion, they do start to move, but it's a proecss. He turns that odd look on the entire group, and steps away himself. Belatedly, he does offer a, "Good luck," to those at least that are made of flesh.

It's easy enough to find something to secure the rope to; the proximity of the mountains means that rocks firmly planted in the ground and of considerable size are in at least decent supply. The group will need two ropes to reach the bottom.

Kidda grins at the gnome, "a wise thought," she agrees solemnly, with a touch of good humor around her green eyes. "I don't suppose anyone knows how to make men fly?" she wonders, wrapping her rope around a nearby rock and tying it firmly off, using several strong knots. "Want to give this a quick tug?" she asks Dragomir, picking the heaviest of the lot, "and does anyone else have a hank of rope? One isn't gonna be long enough..."

"That is acceptable," Thanix states evenly. He returns to the hole's edge, brilliant eyes gazing unblinkingly at the bottom once again. A glance back occasionally, to check on the rope's progress; he eyes it with (presumably) distrust, but makes no comment.

Lilyth shakes her head at Kidda. "I don't know that spell yet, but I can try climbing down. Will probably end up more falling down to be honest." She sighs but doesn't get in the way of the rope tying, just waits until she's told it's okay.

<OOC> Aldean says, "OK, so who is going down in what order?"
<OOC> Kidda says, "AFAIK, we still only have one rope tied off."

Samson looks down, tilting his head. "Alright, so. How about we have some big muscly people, lower some of our less skilled climbers. Tie a knot, lower them down. It will take longer, but we have less risk of someone falling on thier head....cause its bound to happen."

Samson produces a goblin army knife pack...which has 50 foot of rope.

<OOC> Thanix will go first-- "Heavier, so any danger and he'll crunch on bottom."
<OOC> Aldean says, "To clarify -- it's about a hundred feet down."
<OOC> Kidda nods.
<OOC> Aldean says, "You'll have to tie two 50' hanks together."
<OOC> Dragomir is in the strong category.

"Here, let's tie that off, and that's a good idea," Kidda agrees with Samson, "I'd as soon not cosh myself, personally." She looks at the goblin army knife, "I assume you want the business end at the bottom?" she asks the gnome. "Let's tie that here, then, and do the lowering down thing... who's first?"

<OOC> Kidda has already tied her one 50' chunk off to the rock.

Dragomir moves over to grab hold of the rope, his twin gauntlets letting off an hydraulic whine as the fingers clamp down tightly. "I will help lower you all down." he offers.

Thanix acknowledges with a nod, taking up a firm grip on the rope. "I will announces when I have touched bottom," he statse, matter-of-factly. Tightening his grip, he moves to the edges of the sinkhole, peering down--- Peering, before launching into his descent.

The goblin army knife, not so much a knife, as a weird self contained device with various options. Shovel, Tent, Rope, Hatchet, all the things a camper needs...built into one crazy goblin device. Samson grunts and ties the end of it and then hands it to Thanix. "Have fun, don't get eaten before we arrive."

Once up close and personal with the bottom of the sinkhole, Lilyth's light is very helpful; the sunlight from the surface filters down, but it casts long shadows in many places. Dirt and wood planks -- and splinters where planks did not survive the fall -- are everywhere, but the massive, dirt-covered edifice in front of you doesn't appear to be affected. It's easily bigger than any village building, and its blocky style with a domed roof certainly doesn't match modern Alexandria. A massive pair of iron doors are visible amid a pile of wooden beams that appear to have once been fence sections.

Dragomir makes his way down with the loud hiss and whine of hydraulics at work. His climbing technique is amateurish, but the extra strength of his suit helps.

When she reaches the bottom, Kidda steps to one side, and watches, holding her breath, as the others descend. A couple of rough moments, but a look of sheer relief crosses her face when the last of the group arrives at the bottom. As she looks around, her gaze is caught by the massive iron doors, and as her jaw drops, she just stares at them... and stares at them... for several moments, not really seeing anything else.

Thanix's feet are heavy, stirring dust with each thumping motion. The warforged takes the gleaming stone, raising it over his head as he glances about, blue eyes shimmering in the relative light. "Does anyone recognize the mattter of this archetecture?" he asks, thick metal neck grinding quietly. The others manage (more or less) without his assistance; probably for the better-- iron arms are not made for catching.

Samson looks around, shrugging. "Don't know nothing about architecture. I guess we go through the doors."

<OOC> Aldean says, "Lilyth, Perceptino check?"
GAME: Lilyth rolls perception: (13)+7: 20
<OOC> Kidda says, "Aldean - massive as in larger than regular doors, or massive as in thick?"
<OOC> Aldean says, "Definitely the first. The second, it's hard to tell but is a decent bet. You'll need to clear away from the debris from the front of the door to see for sure."

"I know naught of architecture," Kidda steps towards the doors, "but these doors are huge... We won't get them open with all of this ... stuff in front of them," she points out, starting to clear things to one side, and grunting with effort. "Could use a hand - we need to clear the way..."

<OOC> Thanix says, "We move to clear out the rubble?"

Lilyth looks up at the massive building and shakes her head, "I do not know anything about it, or really any architecture." She moves a bit closer to it, though pauses at the start of the rubble. "Yes, we should get things out of the way if we want to get inside..." She sets the stone somewhere out of the way and generates a few more for extra light to go around.

Lyrana cocks her head to the side, she does get out her mace and her shield, though she isn't the strong sort,"Need me to help or just keep an eye on things?"

Samson grunts, and pulls out some brass knuckles, putting them on his little hands. "I think the big folk can dig, I'll keep an eye on things. I'm not that weak but its not like I have a lot of leverage to work with."

"Keep watch, Lyrana," Kidda tells the war golem, "you too, Samson..." she looks over the rubble, "if we can clear enough to get one of those doors open, it'll be enough, I think," she says, moving aside some of the lighter pieces of rubble.

"Digging, again." Dragomir remarks with a shrug, but gets to work regardless in clearing out the debris that impedes the doors.

Thanix makes no comment. He pauses, eyes glimmering briefly as five fingered hands click and whir, a faint sound of metal grinding. Flipping briefly as if they had no bone (equivalents), the five fingers reform into thicker, firmer three-fingered hands; without fanfare, the warforged strides to the debris, digging through the ruins of ancient days.

It doesn't take long for the big and metallic folks among the group to clear away fenceposts and loose dirt. This is much easier than sand, and is less voluminous; as you get closer, Lilyth's warm light spills across writing, well above your heads in large letters. The doors themselves are of meticulous construction, appearing to be a single sheet of metal with no obvious cracks.

It also spills across a group of four buttons and a tiny slot to the right side of the massive double doors; a small stone is set into the metal sheet to the left of the slot.

<OOC> Aldean says, "Does anyone read Kulthian?"
<OOC> Thanix does not.
<OOC> Kidda says, "Not I, said the paladin"

Lyrana does keep watch. She grips the heavy mace and her shield, anything could jump out.

<OOC> Samson says, "Our artificer should"
<OOC> Lilyth looks at the artificer

As the path clears to the doors, Kidda looks up, and her eyes narrow a bit at the lettering, "what does that say?" she asks, skeptically. "It's not a tongue I recognize..."

<OOC> Dragomir does

You paged Dragomir with 'The text reads: FACILITY FOR STUDY OF CREATURES'

Dragomir tosses aside the mangled rusty iron... something... he had in his grip and steps up to examine the new discovery. "It reads... Facility for Studious... no... Study of... anim-no... uh... creatures." he reads off after a moment of examination.

Lyrana blinks a little, "That does not sound very good." she says and shakes her head a bit.

Samson frowns, looking at the sign, then at Dragomir. "So, live creatures, or mechanical creatures? Cause the live ones would be dead by now."

"Study of ... creatures?" Kidda's tone is somewhat incredulous, "well... let's hope the creatures in question aren't dragons or something... not all creatures would be," she points out to Samson. "Though the only kind I know of that might have lived - well, we don't know how long this has been under here, and I've no guess - but dragons are long-lived... don't know about other creatures..." she shudders. "Let's hope for our sake you're right, Samson... I don't fancy meeting a live dragon - or anything else that's been underground alive since this fell into disuse..."

Thanix pauses in shoveling aside a heavy stone, turning back with a thrum of internal workings. "The alternative is not so dire," he suggests, glancing up at the structure. "The Kulthians were rumoured to have great knowledge of artifice. Could this be a precursor to one of those forges?"

"My Kulthian could use some work, but the sign is not more specific." Dragomir adds as he takes a step back from the sign and looks at the four buttons. "But yes, their could be constructed life inside, instead of that born of flesh and bone."

Samson shrugs "Alright, well, open the door and lets find out whats inside." He adjusts his brass knuckles a bit, "And be ready to smite it."

Lilyth frowns a bit. "Well, maybe we can identify things when we get inside and see them... And maybe nothing is alive anymore." She picks up one of the stones to head up toward the door itself, though she isn't one to just open it, not without others around.

The four buttons are each the size of a child's hand. The top left one is made of some substance stained red; the top right one, yellow; the bottom left one, green; and the bottom right one, blue.

Kidda raises an eyebrow, "Artifice?" she asks, then looks at the four buttons. "Four ominous-looking buttons over here, but I'm not going to be the first," she says suspiciously. "Anyone have any notion what order we should poke these in? Dammit, the one day I leave my lance at the temple..."

Lyrana cocks her head to the side and shakes her head having nothing really to add at this point.

You paged Lilyth with 'A glint of something catches your eye in the rubble. Something metallic.'

Thanix gazes emotionlessly. Artifice is not his specialty, nor --unfortunately-- the potential trapping of an ancient day. "I will attempt a random entry if necessary," he states. "Or to simply force through. However, I question the wisdom of such course."

Lilyth turns with her light and frowns. Walking over, she calls out. "There might be something over here." Going over, she attempts to examine what caught her eye.

"We force it and it's set to stop us getting in," Kidda shakes her head, "we could end up skewered or worse... What is it, Lilyth?" she calls over, turning, but staying near to the buttons on the door, rather than crossing to where the other woman is.

You paged Lilyth with 'The item you spotted was a glint of some brassy metal in the rubble. It appears to be a chunk of brass, smooth and flat and a bit smaller than your hand; it has a single stone inset into it and flush with the surface, and writing all over both sides.'

Samson apparently has no idea, "I guess just start pressing and see what happens?"

Lilyth picks up the item, which appears to be a small brass plaque perhaps. There is a stone set into it, and writing on it. "This looks like what is up there," She looks to the Kuthian on the building. "Maybe you can translate it?" she offers it over to Dragomir.

Dragomir pages: What's it say? :)

Kidda eyes Samson, "good thing you can't reach the buttons," she quips, "or we'd all be in trouble..." she looks at Lilyth and Dragomir, "hopefully that thing will tell us how to get in without setting something untoward off..." she trails off hopefully.

You paged Dragomir with 'There, sorry. The writing on one side reads: STUDY FACILITY BUILDING 16; the other is much cruder, possibly handwritten, and reads: RGGBYR'

Dragomir steps over to Lilyth and takes the offered plaque in one of his gauntleted hands. "Hmmm, Study Facility Building... 16." he says, with a little less delay and trouble than the first inscription. Then he turns it around and quirks an eyebrow. "On the back, just one word. But... doesn't look like proper Kulthian. Maybe just... random letters?" he adds, before both eyes go wide open and he steps over to the four buttons. He presses them in the order of Red, Green, Green, Blue, Yellow, and then Red.

Samson grunts, looking over at Kidda, "What, sometimes you have to take a risk. How was I supposed to know they leave the code on the floor, that seems idiotic! Its like locking a door and dropping the key in front of it." He then looks over to Dragomir and frowns.

The brass item that Lilyth picks up out of the rubble is a small, flat brass object with a single stone set into it, flush with the brass itself, and writing on it that Dragomir is easily able to translate. When he pushes the buttons, though, nothing happens. At all. Nothing untoward -- no warnings ... and the door does not open.

Dragomir pages: Was the back handwritten bit in the Kulthian alphabet or Common?

Kidda holds her breath as Dragomir pushes the buttons, letting out that held breath as nothing - nothing at all - happens. "Did they all go?" she asks, ignoring the gnome's commentary. "Is this - did you say building /16/?" she asks, as Dragomir's words sink in. "Are we sure this is the right building?"

Dragomir looks a bit disappointed when nothing happens, at which point he turns around to face the group. "In hindsight that should not have worked anyways. The letters correspond to the sounds of R, G, B, and Y, but of course the Kulthian words for colours do not use the same sounds." he explains.

Next to the four buttons, the single stone between them and the small slot begins to flash. Flash. Pause. Flash. Pause.

GAME: Lilyth rolls intelligence: (3)+2: 5
<OOC> Kidda says, "Is that brass thing the right size to fit into the slot?"
<OOC> Aldean says, "Yes'm."
<OOC> Lilyth says, "SOrry, been working on dinner, just about done."

Samson sighs and rubs his head, "So now what, bash it in? We have to explore the place, its what we are paid for." He turns, looking as the light flashes...."Um....whats that doing now? Its not going to explode is it?" he starts stepping back.

"There's a slot," Kidda points, "next to that, there... does the brass thing fit?" she wonders, looking between the brass object and the slot. "Maybe we should - I don't know - shove it in there or something?"

Dragomir bends down to examine the flashing slot for a moment, and then takes the plaque and sees if it will fit into the opening, if possible.

Lyrana just watches and waits for something to happen, she doesn't always trust the technology even if it had something to do with her own origins.

When Dragomir shoves the small brass piece into the slot, it stops a little over halfway in, the stone next to it begins to glow steadily, and the four buttons begin to glow as well. Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue. The glow pulses slightly as it waits.

"Try the buttons again," Kidda urges, grinning a bit in spite of the level of danger opening a door to a place that studied creatures might hold. "Maybe it'll work this time!"

Samson shakes his head, "Why would someone leave a key right outside a door, unless they got killed right after locking it. This is just strange."

Dragomir starts with pushing just the Red button first, pausing afterwards to see if something happens. If not, he pushes Yellow, Green, and Blue.

This time, pushing buttons gets a response. An angry buzzer sounds, followed by a pulsing flash of all four colors. The white stone begins to flash again, but this time the pattern is Flash. Flash. Pause. Flash. Flash. Pause. Flash Flash. Pause.

After three repetitions of the pattern, it goes steady again, and all the glowing stones return to that softly pulsing glow, as if it waits.

"Maybe something closed all of this in," Kidda suggests. "Maybe an earthquake or something, and it was all of the sudden buried... maybe they dropped it and didn't know..." she shrugs. "People lose stuff all the time..." still, she looks around to see if there are any skeletons lying about that the card thing might have belonged to, once upon an age ago. "This hasn't been seen in who knows how long... we'll be the first inside since it was buried..." her voice comes out on a bit of an awed breath as she speaks. "This is fascinating... still... it's ominous, don't you think? Studying creatures... I wonder what classifies as a creature for the builders of this place..." she watches as the stones pulse with color, frowning mildly as the door still remains shut. Then, she kicks a rock.

Lyrana shakes her head, "I hate this sort of thing, can't we just smash it down?"

"Huh, maybe I was right the first time, but it was not activated." Dragomir wonders aloud, then goes to punch in the same sequence he did originally: Red, Green, Green, Blue, Yellow, and Red.

Samson waves a hand, "Whatever, lets let the guy who can read Kulthian keep trying then. Its likely a better choice than knocking it down." He looks around, and backs up a bit more, just in case.

"What are the Kulthian words for 'red, green, blue, and yellow'?" Kidda asks. "Maybe the start letters are mixed up... you know, maybe their word for yellow starts with an r or something..." she shakes her head at Lyrana's suggestion, "I don't think we should... or could, for that matter... look at the size of thee doors, I mean..." and she looks again. As Dragomir punches the buttons again in the original sequence, the half-elf holds her breath again, waiting.

This time, the sequence Dragomir pushes results in a three-pulse flash of all five stones. The glow of all of them fades, and the doors slide open with the gritty grind of mechanisms long disused. Still, open they do, the door sliding upwards to allow in a rush of air. It retreats into the thick, blocky basalt walls to reveal a massive set of stone corridors, some 20' wide, that extend before you deep into earth untrod for who knows how many centuries.

Amazingly, the place is clean and free of dust. Kulthian lettering glowing softly red is set off by stone walls that give the letters a ghostly appearance.

Samson peers into the doorway, "Alright, so, it opened. Lets go in then..." he gestures to Kidda "You first."

Lilyth takes the stones emitting light and hands one to each person. "Here, so we each have a light with us," she smiles at them and allows others to go in first. At the wording she blinks. "Dragomir? Any ideas?"

Kidda lets out a low whistle. "I have got to learn how to read Kulthian," she remarks. "Can we get another one of those light pebbles tossed down a ways, so the rest of you lot can see? I'm all right, but there's no sense in the rest of you bumping around in the dark..." she looks again, "impressive..." she nods to Samson, drawing her sword out of its sheath at her hip, "me first, then..." she agrees, the look on her face fearless as she steps into the red ghostly glowing corridor, keeping her eyes open. When Lilyth hands her the light stone, she tosses it down the corridor several yards, to see about lighting the place up a little better.

Lyrana cocks her head to the side, "Can see in the dark but thank you." she does hold onto one of the stones, in the hand with her shield, but she is expecting to get jumpd.

"Clever." Dragomir comments. "The code was deliberately written in the Kulthian alphabet but was referencing tradespeak words for colours, presumably to throw off any Kulthians." he explains, before following after Kidda. "I would not recommend Kulthian as a hobby. I only learned enough to read blueprints, but it should be enough to translate as we go."

You paged Dragomir with 'The letters read: EVACUATE'

Samson will bring up the rear of the party, "Well, lets explore this place then and go home."

Dragomir also pauses at the first set of lettering and scratches his chin. "And this reads... Removal? No, different word meaning. Synonym of sorts to exit." he says as he works through out. "Oh... Evacuate."

Lilyth frowns as she hears the translation. "Evacuate? Must mean something happened and they had to leave in a hurry... Something we may or may not want to face..."

"Terrific," Kidda mutters. "The writing on the wall says to get out?" she looks at Lilyth, "and do we not face it, whatever it may be could come up and take on the farmers on the surface... Face it, we must," she says, "or, at the very least, I must... I'd prefer not to have to do it alone, but I will if it comes to it..."

You paged (Lilyth, Samson, Kidda, Dragomir) with 'You guys all hear some sort of metallic clank, coming this way.'

"It certainly explains the presence of the dropped key," Kidda points out to Samson. "If you're running for your life, I doubt you'd stop to grab a dropped anything... we need to keep our eyes open," she says, picking up heer own scanning f the area. Ears perk up, then, "what's that?" she asks, looking in the direction of a sound, "sounds ... metal..." she shifts the grip on her sword slightly, and prepares to take on whatever it is coming for them... if it attacks, she's ready.

Samson tilts his head, "Somethings...moving. Metallic?" He starts looking around, making fists and looking ready for a fight.

"I hear it too..." Lilyth says quietly, "And coming closer...."

"Did anyone start a betting pool on it being constructed life?" Dragomir asks as he glances down the corridor, peering into the darkness as the sound gets closer. "I could have made a few coins if so."

Lyrana cocks her head to the side, "Anyone sense dark intent?" she asks glancing around at the others.

"I sense nothing of the sort, and I would," Kidda tells Lyrana, keeping her eyes open and watching for the source of the clanking, "but if it is a construct... it may not know evil from good... it may simply be..."

"Likely its ordered to kill everything, good, evil, doesn't make a difference. Its like being trampled by a herd of cows, they don't know or care they are killing you." Samson adds.

Clank. Clank. Clank. This time you all hear it, and the pair of humanoid-shaped constructs are visible in the light of Kidda's thrown stone as they amble into view. Blocky and strong, these metal statues move in lockstep down the hall, but upon spotting the group, dull and lifeless black eye sockets flash a warning red. They speed up, moving in eerie lockstep towards the group with flat, blocky arm-like appendages raised to strike.

The air around the half-elf turns faintly blue as she swears in two languages: tradespeak, and the more flowery tongue her mother taught her. Still, the intent of the words is the same, and her irritation is there as she swings again, an upstroke from where she ended her last swing - and misses completely, letting out a cry of pain as the statue clonks her, opening her chin and sending some blood spattering about.

GAME: Aldean advances the initiative order.

GAME: Aldean rolls 1d6+3: (2)+3: 5
GAME: You damaged Samson for 5 points. 13 remaining.

Lilyth pauses for a moment to figure out what she can do, having never seen these before. Not sure about it, she raises her hand and a couple of gold lights burst from her hand and strikes one of the constructs. It doesn't really damage it, not like Dragomir did but... Well it pauses for a moment. Maybe magic will do something to them after all.

The first golem freezes in mid-motion when the magic missiles connect with it, and it's almost as if it would be twitching if it was living. Meanwhile, the other metal critter raises its arm to strike the gnome this time, bringing that arm solidly down at his head and connecting with his shoulder.

<OOC> Aldean says, "Lyrana."

Kidda's green eyes flash as she spots the spiritual weapon swinging at the construct. Then the construct stops moving, and she steps five feet over to line herself up with that spiritual weapon. A swing - and this time, she connects solidly... there's another dent in that metal hide.

<OOC> Lyrana says, "channel heal, just our group, does have selective channeling, and the spiritual longsword will whack A again, it isn't moving but that is diferent from being down."

<OOC> Aldean says, "Dragomir."

The little gnome grunts at the blow to his shoulder, shifting his position slightly as he continues to hammer his brass knuckled fists into the constructs legs. Clang, Clang. Well, something might be happening, but he cant be sure.

Dragomir tries to get a little fancy with aiming for specific joints on the animate statue, but its own movements thwart his efforts. The first jab just glances off its shoulder, while the second right hook is only marginally more effective.

<OOC> Aldean says, "Does not appear to have additional effect."

Lilyth tries that little trick again to see if she could get them to pause. The two bolts fire out and... nothing really seems to happen... Maybe she needs to rethink how to do this.

<OOC> Aldean says, "You hit the same one, right?"

<OOC> Kidda eyerolls some more.

The other statue, the one still moving, raises its arm again, but this time its aim is not as true, and the block of metal comes crashing down well clear of the gnome monk.

<OOC> Aldean says, "Lyrana."

Kidda growls in frustration, swings again... her world is narrowed to the construct in front of her and the sword in her hand. The swing connects with a clang... another clang, a small dent... but still... "Hit the one that's moving!" she shouts, "hit it with magic!"

<OOC> Lyrana says, "move over and whack B with my mace, trying to get into flanking with Samson and the sw will use its last attack to smack a again then vanish"

Lyrana moves over and gets opposite Samson and hits the statue with her magical heavy mace and only seems to dent it. THe longsword swings and tinks off the other statue before it fades into nothingness.

<OOC> Lilyth says, "A then B"
GAME: Lilyth casts Magic Missile. Caster Level: 3 DC: 15

You paged Lilyth with 'This time, both freeze and neither can move.'

Dragomir sees an opening now that the statue has been immobilized. Kidda's words fall on deaf ears as he focuses his efforts on reducing his opponent to rubble. His left hook leaves jagged cracks in its body, and his follow-up right haymaker sends fragments of its structure into the air.

"Got it! But I can't keep this up forever!" Lilyth calls out as two golden bolts fly again, one going to each construct this time. "I don't have the strength to do so, be quick..."

<OOC> Aldean drops out of combat rounds for the moment. Posing.

As the golden bolts fly, both constructs seem to freeze in that same abrupt moment, neither one moving after the bolts strike even though neither appears to do real damage to the reinforced material of its outer armor. From there, the party is eventually able to beat them into submission, although it takes some doing and leaves bits of shrapnel on the floor. Getting through that armor appears to be the worst of it.

<OOC> Aldean says, "Free RP."

Samson glares at the construsts, then looks at his brass knuckles, "I need these magiked." He grunts and steps away, looking around. "So, now what?"

Kidda lets out a whistle, "everyone all right?" she asks, lowering her sword and rubbing her chin with her free hand, where a thin line remains in place despite the earlier healing applied. She leans the sword against her leg, and uses both hands to pop her neck in both directions, but then picks the sword back up again. "There's two, there may be more... this is one hell of a mess in here... best we keep up the search; these things would make mincemeat out of farmers up topside..."

Dragomir leans against the wall as his arcane generator powers down, leaving him somewhat exhausted from maintaining it. Slowly he slides down the wall and sits with his back against it. "She is right, we should continue onwards. Though I would like to know why they stopped." he comments.

Lyrana nods, "Is anyone seriously hurt?" she asks as she looks around a bit.
