  • Title: Goblins? Bandits? Stolen babies!
  • Emitter: Yngvild
  • Characters: Silmeria (Inq4) Dain (Dru2) Charis (Sor2) Barsool-um (Sor 2)
  • Place: Alexandria - Woodlands
  • Time: Jan 10, 2011
  • Summary: Hired by the Guild of Adventurer sto rescue babies!
  • APL: 4
  • Encounter 1: 4 Goblin Archers, 2 Goblin Dogs
  • Encounter 2: Expensive kitties

Word has come of an ambush and abduction from some Merchants. The merchants are clearly prosperous. Plump and rather nicely dressed they are also clearly rather distressed. The woman is sobbing softly on a stool as her presumed husband tries to be stoic in comforting her. At a closer look it seems they came up the hard way, there is a leatheriness to their skin and hands that shows they are no strangers to actual labour, and whilst the clothing is fine it is also crafted for hard wear. Either way the woman is still crying about her 'babies' and how those 'horrible things' will "eat them allllllllup" the man gives her a pat on the shoulder before heading over "They ambushed us, goblins I think. Archers with these things that looked like a rat crossed with a dog. Just down the road they took the wagon so there will be a trail. Please, bring them home" the man begs softly.

While Silmeria can very easily reconcile her faith and her adventuring life, she remains aware that when one shows up to rescue lost babies, the symbol of Vardaman tends to heighten fears, rather than allay them. Nevertheless... "Madam," the bespectacled blond warrior says softly, resting a hand on the mother's shoulder, "we will bring your children home to you. I promise, I will do everything in my power to see that you've nothing more to fear."

Dain seems perfectly at ease. Having followed the instructions from the guild, come to the appropriate place, he now sucks in a deep puff of foul smelling smoke from his pipe and holds it in for a moment before letting it out. He pats Thrud gently, and scritches between her ears as he watches the others, letting them do the talking as he takes another long hit off his pipe.

Ponderous steps of a rather rotund, pale-skinned giant carry him from under cover of a low overhang. One eyebrow is piqued under the protective shade of an oversized parasol, under which lazy waves of smoke nestle. "Savage, deplorable behavior" he murmurs, drawing a silken sheath closer to his chest. He pipes up, idling his gaze towards the beleaguered woman, "Oma, how many children did you have?""

"They eat babies you know" the woman wails rather than answering specifically "They are probably boiling the water right now..." she adds, her voice rising as she looks down the road and wrings her calloused hands helplessly, choking back some more sobs.

"Then we should go now," Silmeria says, sighing and nodding to the man. "We'll be back as soon as we can, sir." Turning, she throws a bright smile to her fellow Guild associates. "C'mon... we've no time to waste, and if we locate the tracks in a hurry we can be certain nothing goes worse."

Dain slides his pipe away and pulls out his shield. Before leaving though, he walks up to the couple, "Can I get something the children have worn or played with, please?" he asks. Intending to offer the scent to Thrud.

Barsool-um draws a small handful of a blackish tobacco into his mouth and ambles in the direction of the lady's gesticulations, peering with a dull expression at the pathway toward the wagon. "Just barbaric," he intones, clicking his tongue with disapproval. Nodding to the other onlookers, he gestures with his arm, as if suggesting they should lead, with a sort of wry smile.

Charis gives Silmeria a nod and moves towards the path with others. If nothing else at least this job is a noble on and so-far it doesnt seem like there will be any swimming or lizard bait needed this time.

The man scratches his thinning hair as he looks around "I think most of it was on the wagon..." he muses as he looks around and purses his lips. The woman pulls out a brush that has sme longish white hairs on it that curiously don't smel entirely human perhaps. It is handed over to Dain wordlessly. Down the road whoever took the wagon may be sneaky, but it is rather hard to hide the tracks of a luxurious wagon and the team to drive it. So true to their word the trail is not hard to follow as it vanishes into the woods around the town.

Dain lets Thrud smell the brush and then with the tiger moves to follow the deep furrows.. hopefully Thrud will notice if they separate from the tracks.

"Let's be swift, then" Silmeria says. True to her word, she moves quickly, eyes on the trail, pistol and hook-bladed sword in hand.

Dain huffs slightly and scrabbles up the back of his heavy horse. It's really the only way he's going to keep up with a swiftly moving Silmeria...

Charis follows along in the back of group, moving swiftly isnt much of a problem though he doesnt want to be up front or the first to be hit with arrow so he keeps himslef at rear just to be sure they arent snuck up on.

Seeing the others rushing ahead, Barsool-um murmurs some disappointment with the pace and follows. His gait is relaxed, but for the grace of the size of his legs he may just be able to keep up. His parasol is folded and pipe shoots soot, staining surrounding leaves with ash and the lingering scent of perfume.

The trail winds on and through, the forest growing thicker as it leads to an area that used to be known for Goblins but has been cleared more than once as it is a little close to town and merchant trails. It also widens out towards a largish clearing, about forty foot from the end to a cave where a rather nice wagon sits just outside.

I don't recognize "barsoom-um".

You paged (Silmeria, Dain) with 'Okay there are some smallish green figures with bows flitting through the woods trying to get into position. Humanoid looking, and some 4 footed things heading to the entrance of the cave. Pose away'

You paged Barsool-um with 'Okay there are some smallish green figures with bows flitting through the woods trying to get into position. Humanoid looking, and some 4 footed things heading to the entrance of the cave. Pose away'

Slowing down just a bit, Silmeria's sword points toward the trees at four different positions. "They're trying to set up an ambush," she says, "let's turn the tide around on them, shall we?"

"Ambush..." Dain hisses as quietly as he can and still be heard as he moves to dismount the horse and use it as cover. "I'll summon some protection.." he seems to be getting ready to cast a spell.

The pale giant Barsool-um rubs a hand on his chin, heavy-lidded eyes staring blankly at the creatures scampering through the low brush. He slowly draws a knotted leather sling to his side and crouches his frame further into the undergrowth. He nods to the others in silent agreement.

Charis nods the crew takes a dart out from his belt then he crouches down low looking out to the out into the area pointed out. However he doesnt seem to see the creatures so for now he has no target in mind.

Thrud with a nod from Dain bounds out into the woods after the goblins as a thick cloud stretches out from around Dain, swallowing up his horse and everything within 20 feet of him as he mutters something and motions with his free hand.

Silmeria slips a thin, leathery length of thorned vine, wrapping it around her fist and touching it to her lips, as she levels her gaze at the nearest ambusher, eyes narrowing. "Let's show them the grievous error of their ways..."

As the mist billows out into the forest, Silmeria emerges, a wraith in a black velvet dress. Leveling her pistol at the goblin she'd identified, she pulls the trigger, and a sharp *crack* echoes among the trees, as her target is blasted off his feet, dead before he hits the ground. "Three," is all she says, gaze raking among the remaining goblins.

The goblins chitter and squeak in their harsh language as their not so cunning plan is rather interrupted. This grows in volume as they start to drop down but more scary is the horrible squeaky kind of growl as a rather disgusting dog type things charge out of the cave and right at Silmeria. Their is a nasty cloud of something around it, but the lunging bite at the Inquisitor only gets a mouthful of armor.

The goblins seem to grow angrier as they pause to launch a rather ineffectual flight of arrows. The shafts from their shortbows aimed at those outside of the cloud but managing to hit everything but. However another disgusting rat-dog thing emerges from the cave and makes a line for the tiger, squeaking angrily. A horrible maw filled with crooked teeth manage to catch the charging tiger in a brutal bite, sinking deep into its side in a welter of blood as the thing worries at the wound.

The screech of diseased fang skittering off her pauldron snags Silmeria's attention posthaste. There's a ratcheting *click* from the innards of the pistol, as a bullet disappears from her bandolier and she lunges to the attack. Her sword, unfortunately, snags on a stray branch, but her gun-hand is steady, and the ugly, doglike thing recoils as a grazing bullet tears a chunk of flesh from its neck.

While Silmeria's sword work could be described, charitably, as clumsy... the gun in her left hand is rock steady, and the goblin-dog's latest attempt at assault spurs the inquisitor to dispense with finesse, press the barrel of the gun between the rancid beast's eyes, and pull the trigger. Another flight of arrows and another three misses. One at least manages to hit Dain't armor, sticking in but without doing any damage to the dwarf beneath. The goblins chitter angrily but seem to be holding their courage. For the moment anyway.

Round Four - Init 21.

It is now Silmeria's turn! Dain is next!

Moving behind the running dwarf, Barsool-um gingerly steps over a fallen dog and splattered leaves to get a better vantage point at the squeaking goblins. Again he draws himself up with a huge breath, contorting his back, before launching his face forward, jaws widening hideously and coughing forth a stream of sizzling venom.

GAME: Silmeria rolls diplomacy: (16)+13: 29

As sizzling acid splashes over one of the three remaining ambushers, Silmeria raises her pistol, holding up her sword hand to signal her fellows to halt for a moment. "Enough!" she says, voice stern and displeased, as the barrel of her pistol moves from one goblin to the next. "Three of your fellows are dead, and if you continue this madness, three more will join them! All we want is the babies, so we can take them to their parents. If you give them to us, we will leave you in peace! If you don't, we will fight to the last, and you will die, needlessly!"

Barsool-um covers his mouth with a handkerchief as he leans over the corpse of one of the goblins, quickly averting his eyes to Dain and the brush.

You paged (Dain, Charis) with 'When one of the kittens emerges it is a very rare and expensive Kypher cat. Said to be great familiars, and awesome if cranky pets. Also out of their cages >.>'

You paged (Dain, Charis) with 'And really hard to breed'

"Her.... what?" Silmeria says, turning to stare, ncredulous, at the druid.

Charis sighs looking over one of the kittens as it emerges. "A rare breed a Kypher cat, said to make for good familairs... They better be paying good this one. I got shot with a arrow for a damn cat..."

And as if on cue out trots a rather impressive looking kitten. It's fur edges closer to silver than white, and despite the likely treatment it looks pristine. Eyes of a sapphire blue glance around curiously as it lets out a bell-like "Mew". Ominously perhaps this means it is out of it's cage. As are the other one that appears to be clinging to a ledge up higher.

Dain looks at Charis with a bit of a scowl, "My 'cat' took more than an arrow for you, so I'd watch what I say about cats..." he steps forward towards the cave..

Dain places a hand on the ground, whispering something softly as roots and grass spring up from the ground to grip the critters. One of which is snagged snugly.

"....Twelve cats..." Silmeria corrects, sighing and closing her eyes. "...Well now I feel a bit of a fool..." ...Which point the druid coaxes vines to erupt from the ground, and snag hold of a quarter of the cats. "....That... would be one way to do it..."

Charis points his finger at the one cage with kitten still in it and directs it over towards Sil, where he drops it seemingly putting her in charge of count the kittens.

"...Well, thanks for that," Silmeria says, bemused. Carefully wiping off her sword, she settles in front of the cage, awaiting the rest. "Someone doesn't happen to have some bits of dried fish we could use to make them want to get in the cages, would they?"

Barsool-um shakes his head, bemused by the cats tumbling out of the brush. "Alexandrians," he muses, "are a very curious sort of people." His mouth still covered with a handkerchief, he begins to whisper with a soft, sibilant hiss. Watching a kitten yawn in response, he frowns. Glancing towards the fallen tiger and his master, his expressions softens. "I seem to be out of my depth in this sort of...," his left hand waves away a passing fly, "environment. I will gather aid for your beast and for... disposal."

Barsool-um has left.

"Oh lookyou're terrifying them!" Silmeria grumps, shifting toward the magically altered chunk of forest, scooping up and gently petting the kittens, in the hopes of calming them down one by one. "There, there, hush now, quiet now..."

Both those that are caught and those moving through scary green entanglement cry pitiously. Even beyond any magical rumours it is clear to see why they are popular. They are truly adorable little..er..babies.

Charis begins the long slow work of of point to at kitties one by one and dropping them into their individual cages. Then pointing the cages and bringing them out to Sil. Damn the live of an adventurer can be damn trying work at times.

Dain trudges forward into the waving vines, his steps slowing as he enters the field.. short legs to not help him here.. but he makes his effort to pick them up one by one...

Despite the treatment the cats seem rather happy once they are in their cages. And the wagon has compartments especially padded and safe for them. The horses too seem docile and well trained. It seems that the merchants are especial good with animals. And are overjoyed to see their babies, aside from the limited loot of the goblins the tearful couple press rewards on the adventurers.
