Pirate Ninjas: Sewers

From Tenebrae

The embassy of Elantra here in Alexandria is a building constructed in the style of a small island in the Jade Isles. Built on stilts, open and light, it'll withstand the rain, looking almost temporary otherwise. Which isn't comfortable at this time of year, so the ambassador is visibly bundled up and uncomfortable when stepping down to the street to meet the adventurers.

"I've hired you through the guild because local elements were taking issue with our attempts to handle things ourselves. Let me be clear: you are authorized the use of any necessary violence to achieve your goals today. Beneath the building there is a sewer entrance. And we've been seeing lights, and hearing noises. We need you to find out what's in there, and to make sure we will never be attacked from below there. Any questions?"

Reva looks at the sewers, looks at the embassy fellow, and says calmly, dryly, "It's generally anything-goes in the sewers in any event. Things in the sewers are as lilely to be giant alligators or evil Kulthian cults as your political rivals. But we will take appropriate action, regardless."

And there is Skribbles, smiling widely enough to let her fangs show. She's in a good mood as she's recently felt the need to beat on something since her new project is more complicated than the ADHD suffering Gobbo would like to admit. She points at Reva and, "Ditto to that."

The Ambassador points to the shadowy space beneath the building, specifically to the sturdy metal grate over the opening. "In particular, if you find evidence of agents from Yanero down there, you will have our particular gratitude. But be warned, they will stop at nothing to prevent that evidence from being found." The ambassador then RUSHES up the steps and back inside, to where warm beverages await.

Reva is Aesir from Stormgarde, this is a pleasant autumn day for her and she's got a coat on, but she's not bothered by this weather. With the fellow scampering off, she will shrug and head down into the sewer. She's got an everburning torch for light as she makes her way.

Skribbles watches the man run up, blinking a bit and tilting her head. "Wow, you'd think it was unpleasant out here or something." She watches the Aesir head into the sewers and shrugs, following behind. If she wants to get stinky first, who is Skribbles to argue.

Reva will find that the grate had previously been welded on, but was freshly removed to allow them to lift it and go beneath at will. Visible through the bars is the sewer beneath, a little trickle of water running below. And all things considered, it could smell worse.

Reva takes a kerchief from one of her pockets and ties it across her face to cut the stink a bit, and will investigate the immediate area for clues. Not that she's a tracker by any means. But she can hopefully see any obvious clues that have been left behind.

Skribbles follows her done but she's smelled worse...and she won't talk about it...especially after she doused him with water. She will also look around, basically following Reva's lead on this since the Aesir seems to know what she's doing.

Reva climbs on down, and unfortunately is not enough of a tracker to see any clues. However Skribbles does notice a trail of burn marks running along the ground, which do smell worse than the rest. And off in the darkness ahead, two flashes of like ZOOM past, left to right, appearing then disappearing.

flashes of *light*

Reva does not notice any clues, so proceeds on by the light of her everburning torch, her high boots at least keeping her feet dry. They will need quite the cleaning afterward, though.

Skribbles taps on Reva's arm as she spies something unfamiliar in the sewers. "Oi, burn marks leading off that way. And I caught a squidge of light down there as well. We aren't the only ones coming down here." She draws her hammer off of her back.

Reva nods at what Skribbles says and draws her sword. This is what we're here for. She nods and will proceed cautiously in the direction Skribbles indicated.

Skribbles nods her head and follows with Reva, trying to remain as quiet as she can and her curiousity peaked as to what the light is.

The pair reaches what appears to be a crossroads of sorts in the sewers. A junction at a right angle, with the system continuing in each direction from that middle point. To the right, off in the distance, are lights. Surpirsingly far away for how recently they were seen right where the party is standing.

Reva quietly asks Skribbles, "How well do you see in the dark? I'm thinking we could douse our lights and sneak up on them, but I cannot see without it. Most goblins, I am told, see fine in the dark. If so, you could lead us and avoid any hazards getting there?"

Skribbles leans in and nods, "You were told right, I can see in the dark." She gives a thumbs up to the plan but adds, "Keep yer light handy, else if something hits you don't want to be fumbling for it."

Reva nods to Skribbles and will stuff her Everburning Torch under her coat. Can't do that with a real one, but the illusory flames are now completely hidden and they go dark. Skribbles will see her nod in the gloom that she's ready to proceed.

GAME: Acedia accepts a meet and will arrive momentarily.

Acedia has arrived.

It turns out Acedia was also part of the hired group, but through a mixup was sent separately. Acedia goesup stairs to speak with the ambassador, who is rather grumpy about having to go outside again to point Acedia to the grate wher Skribbles and Reva just went. But Acedia is able to follow their sounds and catch up with them, just as they begin to approach the lights, after dousing their own.

Skribbles whispers back to Reva and Acedia, "Oi, listen...someone up ahead is castin' dimension door." She listens again and nods, "Yep...definitely dimension door."

Acedia huffs and puffs a little bit, having hurried, the mixup being the cause. Of her lateness and frown. The Gobbo nods to Skribbles, "It was someone or something near the fire elemental.", she adds. "Also, hiiiii!", she says to everyone gathered.

Reva pauses at Skribbles's news. She whispers in reply, "Why would they be doing that here? If ...," when Acedia shows up a bit late, she nods a greeting, but gestures to her to lower her voice. She points out the activity in the not-very-distant area, just down the sewer pipe, really, which may explain why they've hidden their own light.

Getting close, Acedia can see yes, there are two elementals there. Just standing there. One small, one medium.

The wee Gobbo returns to Skribbles and Reva a short time later. "Two fire elementals are there, one is bigger and one is smaller, like me." She rubs at her cheek. "Whatya wanna do?", she asks of the others.

"... and no people? Whoever left these two here is probably off to get more. Either more elementals or more of whatever they think they need." Reva considers. "My first inclination is to get water buckets, but if something is coming back, we ought to deal with these in a hurry before the one who left them here comes back."

Skribbles looks at the other two, "You think we can take on two fire elementals? I mean, I don't know about you, but not a lot of water comes out of this girl." She sighs for a moment and nods, "It could be the beginning of a move or they're there guarding something more ominous behind them."

Acedia shrugs her shoulders. "I don't have a lot of water on me either. And can we really ferry enough water here to combat the elementals? I don't have the sort of spells, or weapons, to fight them. But I can support you with song and spell."

Reva says to Skribbles, "I think we have to. Can't be up to any good purpose down here, can they?" She snorts to both goblins and asks, "You have forgotten we're wading through sewers? Water is all around us. There ought to be plenty, and if it's foul, it's not -that- bad."

The elementals, copmletely oblivious to Acedia, remain in place.

Skribbles looks at Reva and then to Acedia and sighs, "Guess I can add 'fling poo' to my list of accomplishments." She looks to the others and spins her hammer. "Alright, I'm in."

The wee Bard lets out a long sigh and nods. "Fiiiine, where are these buckets you speak of?" She looks to Reva and Skribbles. "I'll help."

GAME: Skribbles refreshes spells.

Reva takes off her hat and says, "I was saying I'd /like/ to go back for buckets, but there might not be time. This will have to do." She'll scoop up a hat full of what must be called water only because you can't pave with it, and will creep as close as she dares. The gobins will have to improvise as well. She'll have to get a new hat later. When she's at the edge of the light, she'll spring forward to try and splash one of the elementals with her hatful of water.

Reva leaves her hat on the ground, there's no saving it at this point. She can get another. She adopts a fencing pose, left arm raised for balance, side on to the target, and she lunges, bastard sword extending to pierce the small elemental. She fights without comment or cry, just a steely determination.

Skribbles lands and slides a little, drawing her gun and turning back towards the big fire elemental. Oh yeah, she's going all John Wick today as she aims her Dragonspitter right for the chest of the big elemental. She pulls the trigger and unleashes a bullet which slams into the target, causing it to go out.

When the larger fire elemental goes out, Acedia peers at Skribbles and grins. "Nice shot." The other Gobbo fires a shot from the hip, missing the smaller Elemental by some margin.

Reva wounds the small elemental again with her long blade, her technique a little sketchy against the elemental, but her determination rock solid.

She stands up and holsters the weapon, "In Reos' name..get ye back to the Great Forge you little sh...it really burned me." She looks at her arm again.

After both elementals have gone dead, there's a poof, and about 20 feet away, a tanned human woman in black appears. "What? You.. you killed my summons! Why? They were just about to go home anyway! How... how gratuitous."

Acedia sidles up to Skribbles, peering at the woman's arm. "I have a few healing spells if you wish?" She looks, then, at the woman in black. "Leaving fire elementals in the sewers where pockets of gas occur is dangerous. Besides... they attacked us first."

Reva eyes the woman, hears the accent, and says, "And you're under arrest, on suspicion of planning an attack on the ... Hut of Elantra." She can't bring herself to say Embassy. The fire elementals would have done a number on it, too, though the fellow might have been glad of the warmth. "Stand down and return with us peacefully," she says, blade levelled.

Skribbles shakes her head, "Nah, I have a salve at home I use at the forge. Nothin' here that's worse than a forge burn." She blinks a bit as the new voice comes in and says, "Yeah, we killed 'em. Whatcha got 'em down here for? Are you moonmad?"

The Woman in Black looks to them all, and shakes her head. "Return with you? Even if I did agree with your opinion on fire elementals, I am under no obligation to go anywhere with murderous hobos in the sewers. Barbarians, the lot of you." She then casts dimension door a THIRD time, and vanishes.

Skribbles holds up her hands and says, "Careful, everyone. She dropped something. Looks like a scroll." She takes this moment to reload her weapon, looking around a bit more.

The Gobbo nods, squinting in the darkness. "It is difficult to say if she did it on purpose, or accidentally.", Acedia says. "It could be a trap."

Reva says to the others, "It's almost certainly a trap. Powerful wizards don't get powerful by leaving their plans behind." She eyes it suspiciously now that it's been called out. "Can either of you do anything with a trapped scroll?"

"Yes, burn it with fire!", Acedia says, enthusiastically.

Skribbles shakes her head, "Not really, only get someone down here who can handle it and in the meantime just have someone stand by. I think if she really wanted to kill us, she would have."

Reva nods about burning it with fire. "And that won't set it off?" She nods about getting someone down here, and says, "I'm hesitant to leave anyone down here, even so. We may have to just leave this for the Guild and mark a map for them to send someone who can deal with such things."

Acedia nods in agreement with Skribbles. "If she is very powerful, she would have no issues dealing with us, I think. Though having numbers and taking advantage of that could work. As for setting it off, I don't know if it is actually safe. But we could see what happens, yes?"

Skribbles walks over to the scroll and leans down. She hesitates for a moment and then quickly picks it up. She doesn't open it, but she holds it out and away from her like a snake and waits.

Skribbles picks up the scroll, and... nothing happens.

Skribbles opens her eyes and looks at the scroll, her wincing fading away as she says, "Huh...no a'splosions." She turns to the others and holds it up, "I'M ALIVE!!!"

Reva has no idea what will happen, but Skribbles has siezed the scroll before she can get clear. When it fails to explode, she breathes a sigh of relief, and says, "Let's get this to the Guild post-haste. Powerful wizards summoning elementals in the sewers may be typical for this city, but I would expect them to at least want us to let them know we've found another." (re)

"Okay, good job. I'll get the fire!", Acedia says, excitedly. She rummages about in a pouch at her hip, pulling out a flint and steel. She looks, then, to Reva. "No fire?", the Gobbo says with a pout. Including quivering lower lip.

Skribbles looks at the scroll and nods her head, "Okay, Reva, we'll take it to the guild." She then raises a finger and says, "Or...and I'm just thinking out loud here...we can give it to someone we don't like and have them open it...just...spit-balling...because there's this elf in the lower dist...yes..guild..you're right...guild."

The guild receives the scroll, with the Ambassador informed. After some investigation, it is pointed out with an "Aha!" from the ambassador that the scroll contains a complete floor plan of the embassy. Not hut, thank you very much. Embassy.
