  • Summary: Jay is peregrinating in the Lower Market when he comes across Git, one of Mama Bula's kids and the one he helped turn over to the watch for Necromancy. The gobbo isn't pleased to see him, and the egalrin is guilty about his involvement, especially when he sees how distressed Git is over his lost familiar, Ratto. Jay does his best to help him, but Git doesn't want anything to do with the bluejay, regardless of good intentions.

Just west of the Northern Highbridge and east of the arena, commerce blooms. Noisy and bustling, most anything may be purchased here for a price. Vendors from all cultures sell their wares from exotically colored carts, and the smells of different nations and far-off city-states mix with local ones from Alexandria and its riverbanks.

For all its commerce, visitors are advised to keep hold of their purses. Even the merchants possess a certain, cunning look. Most are positioned at carts or stalls as opposed to a formal storefront, with trade here being mobile, and visiting from all parts of the world.

Though the quality of goods suffers here compared to Upper Alexandria, the options are more diverse. Too, the oversight of the Watch is slightly less, and during times events are held at the Arena, chaos abounds. After dark, the square becomes a hangout for bards and other entrepreneurs whose business is best conducted by night; the shadows at the edges of the square often contain furtive figures engaging in their own brand of business.

The dark sky is a patchwork of darkest sapphire turning lazily to reveal irregular gaps of twinkling stars. The moon is a bright blur behind the dragging clouds. The fog of yesterday is banished by a chill wind that helps to motivate folk along to their destinations.

A smaller square of first-come, first-served plots for carts, wagons, and crates is emptying quickly with only a handful of vendors still offering their wares. The lazy clop of hooves and squeaking of wheels signals the retreat of various vehicles moved by four-legged teams of one-or-more. The warm glow of gas-powered street lighting spills over dirty cobbles and tumbling debris left behind by merchants and customers.

A freckled goblin with a greasy, lopsided haircut is squatting and stuffing bound bundles into a bulging backpack. The Veyshanti merchant with a mostly-empty wheelbarrow of scrivening supplies is saying his good-byes before pushing off towards home.

A black, white and bluejay egalrin is one of the closing customers, browsing along the vendors, curious more than consuming. He stops in front of the freckled goblin and peers at her. "You look familiar."

Git has been hiding since the unpleasant events retrieving the missing wildfolk. Or-- if not hiding-- he's been busy away from the places Jay frequents. The idea of the demihumans being reduced to animals and tormented by the wicked mul'niessa had upset all of Mama Bula's lot.

Now, he makes a choking noise as he starts and half-hops away from Jay, dragging the pack. "Oh," he frowns at the egalrin as his shoulders rise and fall with forceful, deep breaths, "you."

Yellow-eyes lock onto Integrity for a moment before he crabwalks back a step and picks up the last of his goods. Cloth-wrapped vials or other glasswork from the way that they tinkle; he loads them into side pockets with care. Then he buckles closed the various pouches.

"Did you want something?"

"Me! Integrity C Truefeather, esquire, at your service." The bluejay says proudly, making a sweeping bow, curling a wing. Straightening up he says, "Ah... maybe! What are you selling? How are you doing?"

His primary question, "Are you in need of any legal services?"

He secondary one, "or a teamster? I get a lot of leads, driving a cart."

"I know who you are," Git grumbles as he stands. The gobber makes a point to frequently glance at Jay, keeping track of the blue-feathered egalrin's location even as he struggles to lift and shoulder his pack. The whole thing doesn't look particularly heavy but the wizard's wiry arms had trembled hoisting it up off the ground, regardless.

"I was shopping. I don't need any of those things." Git sniffs. Sighs. "I'm not working right now; just focusing on my studies."

Remembering his staff on the ground, the gobber begins to lean to one side and strain to reach with an arm to try and collect it without bending forward or kneeling down to the ground.

Jay, likewise, keeps track of Git's location, hopping to keep him in view. As he reaches for his staff, the l-egal egalrin swoops and stoops to pick it up, handing it to him. "Okay! Here you go."

"Did you find out if the goats got turned back?" He sounds genuinely concerned, "They doing okay?"

Git seems almost reluctant to take the staff from Jay, straightening up and standing in place for a moment with a fairly skeptical look on his face. He finally snatches it and takes an extra step back. "... thanks," mumbles the gobber.

The second question forces his wide mouth shut so tightly his lips all but disappear. The wizard shakes his head and wrings his hands around the staff of the shaft nervously. Hunched forward under the weight of the pack, he has to half-turn to look back over either shoulder and he shifts between his feet.

"I-- I don't know." He considers his boots and then pushes his head against his upper-arm to wipe some fresh sweat away. "I'm not working. I'm studying. I j-just needed paper..." he reiterates his itinerary as his breathing becomes a bit more ragged.

"Oh! Well... I should have found out. I've been working." Jay says, a bit of guilt creeping in. A feeling that intensifies as he watches the goblin struggle, "I don't know if I said thanks for your help with the rescue, so thanks!"

He flaps around to the front, "You want some help carrying things?"

"Huh?" The gobber offers Jay an uncomprehending look when he's thanked, blinking wide eyes and occasionally sucking in a shallow, fast gulps of air. His confusion turns to concern as he can't quite manage to catch his breath. One clawed hand disengages from the staff and he pulls at the high collar of his tunic.

"... got it," Git chokes out. He shuffles a few steps and leans against the nearest post, hugging the staff to his chest now. He's mumbling 'it's OK' to himself and clamping his eyes shut in an attempt to steady his nerves.

"You sure? You don't look ok. You look like you're having trouble breathing. Did you eat something strange, are you poisoned?" Jay hops closer, tilting his head to one side, then the other, a curious bird.

"I can find a hand cart, you could put everything in that." He suggests. "You're still with Mama Bula, right? Want me to get one of her kids to come help?"

The longer hair on the right-half of his scalp dangles and flips as he shakes his head again, leaning heavily against the post. The gobber issues a little whine and trembles as he forces himself to take one long, deep breath.

"Tammy wanted to come," he explains as he slowly starts to get himself under control. "... wanted to come alone." He slumps and sags down beneath the lamp, crumbling to kneel with a shaky sigh. "I... I want Ratto."

"Hey. Ah! Hey." Integrity is stricken with uncertainty, mentally gauging how far it is to Mama Bula's. An impossible task, as she's rarely seen, if ever, and is considered and Urban Myth. Going to fetch help is out of the question, and the bluejay is uncertain about leaving the goblin.

Git is certainly ailing, physically or mentally, enough to fluster the bird. Enough that he'll do something.

"Ratto? Ratto... that's your familiar? He isn't with you?" Integrity checks his belt, ensuring bolas and rapier are where they should be, and then he moves to help the goblin stand. He holds him up with both hands and a wing, stooped to provide support. "I'm providing assistance under the good intentions provision, so even though I'm not a trained healer I'm not liable. C'mon, let me help you where you need to go, what happened to Ratto?"

"They took him away... when they kicked me out for the zombie." Git explains with a sniffle. He'd shrugged off Jay's first attempt to help but accepts it on the second try. "Said I couldn't be a wizard anymore and didn't get to keep Ratto. 'Summary dispatch of denied privileges.'"

Talking about something else is helping, even if this particular distraction is making him frustrated and angry. There is some fallout from his agitated breathing, however, and the gobber begins to hiccup sporadically.

"Hk." The gobber jumps mildly. The staff comes away from his body and the butt lands on the street with a *tik*. "F-food. I'm gonna eat by myself. Shopping and eating without Tammy treating me--hk... treating me like a little kid."

Jay holds up Git, a firm and feathery embrace. He helps the goblin walk, making sure he doesn't drop his staff. There's a vibration on the Egalrin's belt, his rapier, catching on something. Or something else.

"You're right Tempty, it's not right." Jay says, taking on some of the goblin's anger. "That's unconscionable! A wizard's familiar is a living thing. Your bond is more like a marriage. It's not a concession granted by a guild. Ratto can't possibly bond with someone else, who is taking care of him? It's tantamount to a death sentence. Familiars are, as I understand it, intelligent and capable of communication."

The bird's voice rises as he keeps squawking, his lawyer-y nature engaged. "You should appeal! I'll help! File a motion! You aren't a kid."

"Hk." Git stops and takes one hand to disengage Jay and push him away. It's not the strongest gesture but he's insistent. His eyes are wet but the gobber's expression has turned hard. "You can't appeal; they sent him *away*," he explains forcefully. When he hiccups again it's through gritted teeth.

"Ratto is gone. Forever. I'm not supposed to be a wizard. Because you and your friends told the watch on me." Git sniffs and draws a sleeve across his eyes. "I can eat by myself."

The little freckled, underground wizard makes for the Fernwood.

"I didn't tell." Integrity says, his wings slumping and the feather-tips resting on the ground as Git wrestles away from him, then runs for the pub. "Only some of them are my friends, allegedly."

After all, who can really say who one's true friends are.

His talons scrape on the cobblestones as his toes tighten up. His hand drops to his rapier hilt, holding tight. His head turns to the side, as he eyes a trick of the light.

"No. He is just a kid. You can't crush someone with consequences so much the rest of their life is ruined. They threw him away."

The bluejay turns to walk a different path, his head full of legal considerations.

<OOC> Jinks says, "And I'm not trying to make you/Jay feel bad. The outcome of that PRP was perfectly reasonable. Git is just going through some stuff."
<OOC> Jay nods, "Jay still feels bad."
<OOC> Jinks says, "And the kids weren't really ready for what happened on that rescue PRP."
