  • Title: Game of Ghosts, part 2
  • Emitter: Cryosanthia
  • Characters: Aimarra, Jinks, Karasu, Randolf, Skielstregar, Vaera
  • Place: A14: Society for Progressive Arcanists
  • Time: Sunday, January 02, 2022, 2:01 PM
  • Summary: The ghostly disruption continues in the study hall. Ghislain makes an appearance, and goes from seemingly healthy but still transparent, to hanged with broken legs in mere seconds. The sight terrifies Aimarra and other students, who flee. Vaera confronts a professor, asking for help, while Jinks makes a brief appearance along with the Loremasters, who add that there are two stories regarding how the students in the love triangle dies. He leaves to help his lover, as Skielstregar moves in and finishes off Ghislain. The ghost fades, but all does not seem settled. Randolf joins Vaera in shouting at the professor, while Skielstregar and Karasu trail a student upstairs. She's moving quickly towards the roof. They try to stop her, and are blocked by a door. The student, Claudia, is out on the roof when they catch up with her. She has a noose around her neck and seems to be dancing towards the edge, for a dance in the air. Skielstregar moves to grab her, and managed to drop her down the ladder instead. The noose takes hold of him, crushing the sith'makar's windpipe and dragging him to the edge. It would have succeeded, if Karasu hadn't intervened. Vaera and Randolf attempt to damage the rope with spells, but Karasu makes an off. He will willingly die as Ghislain or is it Waldemar, desires. He is pulled from the peak, to the great upset of Wayu, and crumples to the ground 50' below. Jinks slides down, Vaera climbs down, Skielstregar levitates down, and Randolf walks the long way through the hallway to yell at, then threaten the professor. Jinks' spell brings Karasu round, thank Vardama. (or Tarien!)

Previously

It's the holidays, on the Progressive Arcanists campus.

Randolf is in the Main Study Hall of the Library. With him are other students, conversing or studying. A few anomalous people appear, two Sith'Makar, an archer with an unusual bow, a witch with a raven and mysterious business. This is normal.

Books start coming off the shelves, then flinging themselves at people. This is not normal.

At first it's presumed to be a student prank, someone using Mage Hand or a similar spell. The attacks get more violent, and one of the invisible attackers reveals himself to be the ghostly, skeletal remains of a former student. These might be the legendary haunts of the school. As people are thrown about, Randolf and Skielstregar attack with magic, which has some effect. Despite being a library of magic, most of the students aren't using it.

They're fleeing in decision paralysis.

Abby, a rotting half-elf appears right beside Skielstregar and soundlessly screams at him. Her throat is tattered and ripped open, her fingers end in bones. Like Waldemar, she seems both skeletal and shriveled, and translucent.

"Nonononono," the student-missile says, retreating.

"Ugh, send your lover back too!" Aimarra calls out, sidestepping the retreating student missile and charging in, sword at the ready, when the second one appears. Her sword appears to go through it - and not, the sharpened edge appearing to find invisible purchase of some kind.

Skielstregar turns like a river whip and smashes his miasma laden weapon down on the appearing specter. He simply snarls.

The dual attacks completely dissipate the spectre. The female half-elf, 'Abby' presumably, fades with nary a chance to react, so violently was she struck.

Attacks that seemed to yank the third of their number into visibility, though not corporeality. At the southern part of the room, amongst the trio of shelf-elfs, a rotten and decaying half-elf appears.

He's jerked, by shackles on each wrist, and his face is a twisted expression of hate. His neck is broken, a noose stretching upwards, and vanishing.

The sight of him causes two nearby students to scream in terror.

Now

As Ghislain fades from sight, a second orb of light zips into the north hallway.

"Wait! Was that Abby de la Cruixshanks? I bet I can bind her! I've always wanted a pet ghost." The tall elf at the south end of the room says. His companions, well, they're too busy getting out of the way or picking themselves up after being thrown.

The would-be ghost-binder, heads past Aimarra towards the north corridor.

GAME: Aimarra rolls perception: (13)+14: 27

Wide-eyed herself, Aimarra freezes for the space of half a second as the new - and much nastier - ghost appears, but shakes it off and dashes past frightened students to stand in the middle of the room, sword drawn, staring hard at the space where it left. "Show yourself, you little shit," she snarls at the space where it was. Apparently she is fairly sure it's still there.

Karasu moves carefully through the room, keeping his dark eyes on the spot where he can see a magical aura. Though he can not _see_ the spector, he knows approximately where it is. He motions toward the location and the raven on his shoulder makes a harsh unhappy noise toward the ghost. "There, the one that was bound to the others by chains, it remains here."

Randolf trundles forward with an angry scowl, stopping once he's in view of the last poltergiest. He snaps his wand out. "HAH!" Another brace of orbs burst out and wheel out to strobe into the empty space. Each flash briefly illuminating the outline of the spectre before fading back into invisibility. "YE WANT TAE KEEP GOIN', YE NO-BODIED SHIT? I CAN SEE RIGHT -THROUGH- YE!" he roars in fury.

The magic orbs hit empty space by the south shelves. There's a shimmering in the air, the angry face of an elf appearing once more, burning eyes locked onto Randolf. Most of his body is translucent. He clearly has had his neck broken, and it seems, his legs shattered as well. He floats at a tilted angle, then vanishes from view.

For a moment, there's silence, stillness.

Those with magic enhanced sight can see an aura moving, from the shelves to the middle of the room and passing Randolf. There's a brief flutter of the dwarf's clothing, as if a hand grabbed at his lapel and then let go.

The interference is more dramatic with the slight elf that just ran past the substantial dwarf. His forward progress is halted, and he's nearly thrown backwards into Randolf. He manages to keep his feet.

"Leave me alone! I'm trying to bind a ghost." He shouts... at a ghost.

Out for an afternoon haunting the halls of academia with Lesta, Jinks was singing a quiet gnomish song and enjoying the company of his blue-haired illusionist friend. She's been helping him with the practical matters of bending the Weave from a more rigid, formally-trained perspective in the hopes of making the sustaining of the magics a little easier for the bard. Frankly, it was just an excuse to flirt, snack, and compare magical talents. At the sounds of combat he's asking 'Leste to hang back around a corner before jogging ahead. He pulls his bow out of the semi-permanent illusions he wears and pokes his head around a corner...

The gnome's black eyes go foggy and he's joined peering with another Person in master's robes. The man's beard if fantastic, curled and waxed in a dozen places. The memory tuts and wags a finger at the chaos in the room. "Waldemar and Abby del la Cuixshanks-- and I see you in there, too, Mr. Ghislain! I've warned you about your 'antics' impacting your studies. Any dalliance during exams can impact your focus and-- as we learned in Runic Observations and Practical applications-- a triangle is far more complicated than a line-segment!"

Jinks comes out to as the memory slides back into the Weave, readying to move his own mouth when he's staggered by a second. The minstrel falls to the ground and shudders as his eyes fog over once more.

"Murder/suicide. And I thought studying here would be SO BORING." The memory of a student kneels next to the gnome, leering as the combat as he gossips. The fellow's evoker's robes as shabby and ill-fitting, and his elegant, elven features are scarred by fire. "Waldy the Hobby didn't want to share. Tossed old Ghis off the highwalls to make it look like the pressure of school was too much, tricked little-miss-Abby, too. They say the guilt was too much, though, and both hanged themselves before the year was through... That certainly did break up the monotony of exams..." and then the second remembrance, too, blinks back into the Weave.

Skielstregar's head whips around as spells are fired and the ghost is pointed out. He's about to move where the carnage was, but then a student was shoved. He careens at a turn, shoving the spear end over a table as black miasma from the weapon flicks to rhe empty air. "Return to Ea, abomination..." he growls. He doesn't catch the gnome and his entrance, he was a snarling Forgotten at the moment.

Sharp, well-trained half-sil eyes track the thing as it moves, but Aimarra only scowls openly as the ripples tell her where it is. She bursts into action, swinging hard for the fences and finding nothing at all, as if it was not there. "Give me enemies I can see," she grumbles.

Karasu keeps pace with the spector, to keep the other appraised of where the now-invisible ghost is located. His expression is a thoughtful one, and his eyes flicker to Jinks. An unfamailiar individual, but clearly one that has knowledge of what is going on. "Some aspect of their death is keeping them tethered here." Of this he seems certain, but of how to dispense with the spirit... that remains less so.

Randolf staggers back as the spectre swooshes by him, skirling his robe and kilt all around. "You filthy little sheepfucker!" he snarls. He lifts his wand and makes a quick sketch in the air. "Re ex re io prestos!" In response, glittery blue-silver sparkles start raining down in the air. They pass through nothing, and do not illuminate anything, but they do serve as a convenient marker. "Right there, friends!" he bellows, stabbing his wand at the space. "Just follow the sparklies!"

"I'm really tired of hearing about romantic tragedies and people hanging themselves," Jinks mutters for no one's benefit. He stays kneeling against the passage's frame and pinches his eyes to collect himself.

Once the dust is out of the gnome's eyes he glances into the room, sorting through the threads of reality until he's found the one he wants. A finger curls around the gossamer thing and he taps out an accelerando as he begins to sing. Airmarra, Karasu, Randolf, Skielstregar, and Vaera (as well as four of the closer students) feel the world seem to slow around them.

In the wake of the spell the Hymn surges into the room, bolstering those locked in combat with the tragic trio.

Tiny sparkling specs rain from the high ceiling, illuminating a section of the study hall, indicating where the ghost might be.

Where it is. Ghislain pops into view, transparent, the bookshelves visible through him, but otherwise looking happy and healthy. He has on student robes, a casually tied belt, books under one arm. Seemingly, he's speaking, and appears to be addressing Aimarra.

Although she can see, his eyes aren't looking directly at hers. A noose appears, dropping from the ceiling and encircling his neck. His eyes go wide, surprise, and he is looking at Aimarra now. In terror.

His mouth opens in a choking scream. He's yanked to the ceiling. His neck breaks. The rope snaps. He falls! Soundlessly crashing into the floor, his legs shattering, bones bursting from the flesh of his thighs.

His eyes never leave the rangers, and his mouth grows wider and wider in a voiceless scream. He lies in a crumpled pile at her feet, then vanishes.

Out in the hall, there's a voice with a scream. Elfin, yet feminine.

Skielstregar watches the renactment of the half-sil's demise. He watches, brisk steps carrying hin fast at the aid from the Hymn. And down the ghost goes to instill the shock and fear it felt.

As does a miasma coated axe end, cleaving the specter in twain. It carries downward and buries itself into the ground, Skielstregar heaving heavily as crimson lit eyes glance about for more.

A mote of light appears on front of him, then rushes to the north, only to vanish in the air. "... morrre..?" he rumble growls, yanking his halberd free. It stares at her. Through her. Aimarra stares, eyes widening until they are the size of saucers as the rope and its prisoner crash to the floor.

Nope. Nope nope nope.

Her scream mingles with the elfin scream from outside the room, and she turns tail and dashes from the room, her bow forgotten on the floor by the door. She vaults tables and chairs, getting out the only thing on her mind.

She disappears, and out in the hall, the sound of a collision mingles with a startled and reproachful professor's voice that trails into the room. "Just what do you think you're doing running in the halls?"

Karasu stands a little straighter as the ghost vanishes, his dark eyes flickering around the room seeking out any source of magic that might try to cause any more damage to the area and those who exist inside it. There is nothing however, and yet... he doesn't relax. It seems too easy to him.

<OOC> Randolf says, "I'll just blast it with another magic missile at the darkness."

Randolf glances over his shoulder as Aimarra goes running in terror. "Lassie -wait-!" he cries. Turning his enraged gaze back on the spook, he snaps his wand forward. "HAH!" The moment of distraction cost him, as the orbs give only feeble strobes as they impact the shade's substance. "Damn it, yer already dead, NOW FUCKING ACT LIKE IT!" he roars, all but hopping up and down in frustration.

"Jinks, what was that scream? I'm frightened." A gnomish voice calls from the east.

"Welp, gotta go Tallmen. Good luck!" He leaves and unexpectedly as he arrived.

There's a tension in the air, the study hall has just seen violence and ghostly apparitions. For the moment, it seems quiet, though the sensation of waiting for the other shoe to drop, remains.

And shoes are heard, mostly leaving in all directions, following Aimarra's lead or finally seeing a chance to flee.

Vaera does not particularly wish to fire a gun in a crowded building, and there is no guaranteed it would do too much, anyways. The sound of someone who seems to know what they are doing seems like a much better use of her time, and she ducks out of the room to find them.

"Apparitions in the library." She explains quickly. "They are throwing objects, and people around, trying to scare and hurt them. "There were several, but most seem gone for now."

Skielstregar takes a deep breath as the Affliction courses through him. Every breath a snarl, he jogs to the north hall, head swinging from side to side before he announces, "No one here! But there wasss people here. The lightssss went thisss way though!"

He's doing his best to keep hks head on straight despite every instinct telling him to wreck havoc.

GAME: Karasu rolls sense motive: (6)+8: 14 (vs DC 20)

"What? What what?" The professor suddenly blusters, and immediately takes on an authoritative tone. He waves his hands, both hands, dismissively, his voice booming to carry into the room. "There are no apparitions, ghosts, poltergiests or dead students haunting the study hall. You're all overworked and imagining things."

His voice lowers, leaving damage control mode, and he speaks directly to the red scaled sith'makar. "If you did see anything, they're harmless haunts. Usually harmless, until something sets them off. They only appear during the winter break and we don't want to encourage students being foolish. There's nothing really that can be done. They've been here for decades." Randolf shoots a glare over his shoulder. "WELL WE'D SURE AS SHIT BETTER -FIND- SUMMAT TAE DO BECAUSE -THEY'RE TRYIN' TAE KILL US-!!"

There is no sign of Aimarra just yet - she seems to have made tracks out the door, leaving her bow behind.

Skielstregar's head whips to the stairs. He inhales deeply, then growls sickeningly. "Thisss one can smell you... come, sssomeone quit thisss place..." Skiel says to the group before stomping his way towards the stairs. Still tense. Still scary. Still Forgotten.

Karasu glances toward the irate dwarf, subtly shaking his head, but not correcting the angry individual. Instead he heads out after Skielstregar, trying to keep the sith-makar in sight. He seems less concerned about the bestial aspect of the bronzeish sith, and yet, does try to keep pace with him as best as he is able.

"At least one student was badly injured by being flung around by the apparitions. That is not harmless." Vaera states, crossing her arms. "I do not know what was done to anger them."

All the students have vanished.

Except one. A mousey looking Arvek Nar looks up from behind a table near the wall. As goblinoids go, this hobgoblin is closer to gob than hob, short and rail thin, he has large round ears to go with his round glasses, and a robe that seems to have been made for a thicker man.

He ducks back down, saying, "I think... the undead is right. Claudia ran upstairs."

The professor crosses his arms at the sith'makar, "USUALLY Harmless. They have been banished, bound and ghost trapped. They eventually come back. Was someone making a lot of noise?" He eyes her thunderbelcher. "Studying too loudly?"

Randolf relaxes his posture when he sees that no more ghostly shenanigans are forthcoming. He shoves his wand into its holster and looks around the tumbled furniture. He's still on edge, beard bristling and brows furrowed. He goes to right one of the tables and sorts through fallen papers, finally finding his pipe. The stem has broken from the shank and the bowl sports a lovely crack where the table landed atop it. "Piss an blood an' flamin' -shit-," he growls, gathering up the pieces.

He stumps out to the professor, pulling his wand as he goes. "I would -think- that an infestation o' spectral apparitions would be summat ye'd want the student body tae be -aware- of," he growls, pulling himself up to his full height as he glares up at the professor. "Post a bloody -sign-, fer fuck-sakes-, man! Are -all- you tallfolk blinkin' idiots, or are you just the lucky one? Hammer an' -anvil-! I'm within my rights tae have the entire faculty dragged intae court fer this -gross-. -Criminal-. NEGLIGENCE!"

He stabs his wand towards the man with each utterance. The dwarf is -spitting- mad. His favorite pipe got broken. That's almost as bad as harming the beard. Turning on his heel, he starts storming away, pausing to twiddle his wand over his broken pipe. "Re ex re intaglios restorae!" With a soft flash of light, the pipe is restored to its original condition. Still muttering angrily, he stuffs it into his pocket as he trundles towards the stairs.

A spiral staircase in a small tower provides access to the second floor. The ceilings are high in this building, at least 15' up, and the second floor has a walkway over the first floor's corridor, allowing for a nice view and for sound to carry. The halls themselves are paneled with dark wood. Oak with mahogany accents, giving a solid and warm impression.

At the south end of the western corridor, there's the hint of a student turning into the eastern one that runs parallel to the front of the building.

Skielstregar flinches as Karasu is following him, but he takes a moment to calm himself. Miasma stops leaking from his scales, second set of fangs retract, and his claws shorten. The gleam in his eyes is gone as he staggers to hold himself up against the wall. He blinks as he sees a student just vanishing around the corner. "You there, halt!" he says aloud firmly, yet tiredly. The makari jogs after them.

"I did not make too much noise. There were some particularly loud students who think they can trap the ghosts."

"I am reminded that intelligence is not directly linked to wisdom." Vaera grumbles. "I should go with the others to see where the last one went."

"You come to a magic school and you're surprised when you see magic?" The professor huffs, billowing out his chest, "Every year they get more and more entitled. It's not as if we have a river that makes you drown yourself when you look in it."

There was such a river. It was buried! In runs under the staff cafeteria and supplies the water for the coffee. Many an adjunct professor has spent long hours staring into their mug, contemplating their life choices.

The professor's eyes narrow as he stares after Randolf, "that one, or a different one?" He could write him up for threats, but he's not worth the paperwork.

Upstairs, the fleeing student doesn't halt. Claudia moves with unnatural speed, matching the magically enhanced pace of Skielstregar and Karasu. She passes door after door, offices, or storage. There are labels. She's not reading them.

She's running towards the bridge. To jump? Except, just before she reaches it a door flings open and she jumps through it. The door slams behind her. It leads to one of the square towers that forms the false keep over the main entrance. It has access to the roof.

The sith-makar gets a cautious look from Karasu. Though his seeming weariness in the wake of losing his fearsome form seems to put the darkly clad man more at ease. He follows still in the sith's wake. Catching up a little when the other slows due to exhaustion. It seems that the student they are chasing is headed for the roof, so he hastens to follow them.

Skielstregar blinks. "Fleeing are we?" he sighs to himself before yelling down the stairs. "Sssomeone's fleeing, we're chasing!"

He gives the man a nod before resuming the chase, opening doors and that once barred their path. "Halt! We are not going to harm you, we just... just have questionsss!" He has to catch bks breath in the middle of that. Transforming always took a stint out of him for a spell. You paged Aimarra with 'there is something that is going to happen on the steps out front, but it will be a couple more rounds before its visible. If Aimarra was running she'd miss it'

The mock gatehouse has two doors close to each other, then a small room with a ladder that goes up to the roof. The first is easily flung open, the second, as Skielstregar opens it a few inches, is ripped from his grasp and slammed.

Skielstregar is surprised the door shoves back, and he stumbles back. The fatigue hindered him.

"I was hoping for assistance before they kill someone, but that does not seem to be forthcoming." Vaera sighs. Leaving them be, she looks for the nearest entrance upstairs and runs off to catch up before they got too far away.

Down below, Aimarra had dashed out the main door before her wits caught up to her, and now she stands on the steps to the Arcanists' Guild, hands on knees, panting, one hand still holding the naked blade.

The professor tut-tuts and huffs along, following Randolf at a much slower pace than the dwarf's.

As Skielstreagar moves backwards, Karasu moves in, trying to shove the door open, but to little avail. He glances at the sith-makar behind him but shakes his head again. Any spell he might use to aid the sith would only be undone by the exhaustion that he was experiencing. Clearly his own strength would not suffice. "You do not have to let us in, but if you would talk to us, that would be appreciated."

Randolf trundles his way up the stairs, snorting and snarling as he goes. "*mutter grumble grumble grrr* -show- you some bloody magic, ye stonkin' tosspot..." He looks around the landing as he arrives. Hearing the voices of his friends, he starts making his way along towards them.

There is no reply to Karasu's request. It's silent on the other side of the door.

Outside, in the chill air, Aimarra can hear a loud squeak of rusty hinges, and then a clang as a seldomly used hatch opens up on the roof. A good forty five feet up, something seems to be happening.

Claudia is approaching the edge of the precipice, possessed, yet struggling, her hands clutched around her neck.

Karasu heads up after Skielstregar, always in the sith's wake today. He pauses at the top though, watching the woman with wide eyes as Wuya takes to the sky. Hovering between the woman and the edge. Letting out warning caws that she is too close. Far too close to the edge. He holds up his hands, slipping his dagger back up his sleeve as he does so and showing himself unarmed. "We mean you no harm, only; talk to us."

Pant, pant, pant. Whew. Her brain finally back in order, Aimarra looks up just in time to see the figure at the top of the Guild roof, struggling with something that only she can see, hands around her neck - and looking like she might jump off. Frantically, the half-sil looks around for something to climb, to get to her, but nothing is forthcoming, and instead she shouts to whoever might be around, "She's in trouble! The ghost got her!"

As she does so, she maneuvers - if the girl is going to jump for it, maybe she can catch her?

It's dark, on the roof, windy. The verdigris of the copper sheeting is slippery from the cold, but thankfully not iced. Not an enjoyable place to walk, especially not out towards the peak of the roof.

Claudia is near the edge. A noose around her neck, which she's trying to pull off. Yet her feet keep taking her closer. She's being pushed.

Vaera climbs the stairs just in time to see a door broken open and the others pile inside. Vaera quickly follows, trying to close the remaining distance.

Skielstregar's eyes go wide at the sight before him. The ghost was getting her, but he was still too tired to use what he's learned to make an impact. So he does was he does best. Use his massive body.

An arm swings out and around the student, tarnished scales cracking and flaking off. Ugh, so itchy... this wasn't the time!

Karasu leaps across the distance, trying to tackle the girl to the ground and pin her there. It's reckless. He doesn't have much strength compaired to the sith-makar, but he has to try. Has to do something to prevent the woman from going over the edge. So he does, a little 'oomph' leaving him as his body connects with the girls and the sith's.

Claudia's progress is halted. Skielstregar and Karasu's grasp is enough to hold her back. She's struggling still.

The rope, a noose, that's around her neck whips off. One end of it fades into ghostly transparency, but the loop itself is very real. It encircles the Forgotten's neck, and tightens.

And tighten...

The edge is right there. Just... jump.

Down below, Aimarra backs up, trying to stay below the fight. If anyone falls - "Stay with it!" she calls, sheathing her blade, but it's all she can do - for now.

But eventually he manages to scramble up to the upper level. Taking ahold of his wand, he's treated to the terrible sight before him. Ghislain's ghostly figure outlined in his vision, and a giant Skiel pinning down Claudia. He bares his teeth in a snarl and steps forward. "OY! GHISLAIN! PICK ON SOMEONE YER OWN SIZE, YE BASTARD!" He snaps his wand out. "HAH!" Another brace of orbs blasts into the ghost, once again briefly illuminating its outline before fading back to incorporeality. He tries to move, and almost drops her from suddenly being jerked about. But Vaera grabs her. And he steadies. With the help of the others, he twists his massive body, talons sending sparks on the brass rooftop flying as he scraps to keep himself up there. The massive arm deposits the girl by a ladder haphazardly, both hands going to his neck, trying to find a grip.

There it is. He can feel it.

A glance down at the girl as he's struggling. "Gakrrkaaak... what.. are you doing..? RUN ALREADY!" he bellows out. Scales seeping black ichor, he transforms once more. A massive monster atop the Society's library. Held aloft by a noose.

The struggle on the roof intensifies. Claudia, Karasu, Skielstregar, Ghislain. It's confusing, both Claudia and Ghislain are struggling, but Ghislain's struggles seem to be tightening the noose around Skielstregar's neck.

On the ground, a ghostly figure passes by Aimarra. The female elf, from earlier. She's walking like a student, her head down, books clutched to her chest. Some noise above catches her attention, she looks up.

Ghislain meets Randolf's eyes, the dwarf's taunt having caught his attention. His response is a wordless murmur. Lips trembling. He seems to be saying, '... but I love you'.

There's a tremendous yank on Skielstregar's neck, but the big sith is not pulled from the roof.

Karasu rises to his feet, staying close to the enlarged an re-enraged sith. He's wary of the sith's massive dagger, but he stays close lest the suddenly larger man starts to go over the edge of the roof.

Randolf narrows his eyes. "I'm not -her-, boy," he growls. "An' yer not you. Yer life ended. I'm sorry, but it's true. Ye have tae let go. Yer fathers await ye in the halls of yer ancestors. Ye'll never find peace here. Only there. Ye have tae let -go-." He lifts his wand, ready to unleash another missile burst. But the appearance of the female student's shade stays his hand. The raging Forgotten undead was enough to shake Claudia back to her senses, and being dumped on the ladder allowed for a quick exit down. Faster than she wanted, but she's leaving the room.

The noose tightens around the Sith'Makar's neck, digging into his scales, tearing a rent, his dark blood leaking out.

There's no air. There's too much air.

It's a long way down.

Where a ghostly elf is gazing upwards, squinting. She's looking where Ghislain was staring. Her eyes meet Randolf's, almost. Her lips move, silently forming 'what are you doing?' and a name. Ghislain's? Waldemar's. It didn't seem to have enough syllables for either.

She was to meet her two friends for a late dinner. She came early, to surprise them, with festive presents in her pockets and stumbled on...

This horror...

Her two lovers in battle on the roof? Over her? But they adore each other. They always said so! In shock, she stares.

Without thinking, without even realizing that he's moving, Karasu grabs ahold of Skeilstregar's tail. Pulls as hard as every muscle in his body can manage and plants his feet in the roof. Wuya caws at him, worried and surprised as he is. "I know!" He calls to the raven, sweating heavily and looking at the incoming edge of the roof. If the sith goes down... at this point they both might go.

As Karasu saves Skielstregar from taking the plunge her dear Ghislain did. That they all did.

Karasu pulls on Skeilstregar again, trying to get the sith on more stable footing. Things are getting out of control. The sith can't take much more. He looks to the other sith trying to cast her healing spell on the ghost and steps closer to the edge of the building. His black eyes lock with Vaera's. "Heal your friend, not the damned."

His words are simple, but when he turns next he addresses the ghost. Girding himself he looks at the rope and speaks again. "If you must have a sacrifice leave these innocents alone. Take me to Vardama's halls." Wuya caws unhappily, in protest, but he doesn't listen to the raven's unknown words. He is a fit sacrifice. A willing one.

Randolf tenses as Skiel nearly goes toppling over the edge. He steps forward, lifting his wand. "Re ex re surrigos ascendae!" he calls out, snapping his wand towards the sith. A warble of light ripples out from beneath him, and he begins to hover a couple inches off the ground. "I got ye laddie!" he calls, his eyes riveted upon the grayscale. "I won't let ye drop!"

With Lesta mollified, Jinks appears on the highwalls and blinks black-on-black onyx eyes between the chaos. Epsying the feral sith-makar with a noose around their neck, the gnome selects a small parcel of butter, crushes in his fist, and hums a few bars.

There's a shifting of the light and Skielstregar is coated in a sheen of animal fats.

GAME: Skielstregar rolls cmb+10: (7)+11+10: 28 (+10 Grease)

Skielstregar was already kind of greasy. That black miasma that seeps from between his flaking and tarnished scales was helping with hitting the damn ghost.

And now he was this strange pearlescent mixture of oil and slicker oil.

His neck bleeding from how tight the noose was, he jams a hand into the rope and pulls as hard as he can. Pop!

"THIS ONE WILL NOT DIE LIKE THIS" he roars at the ghost, slathering. Shaking.

He's not angry.

He's afraid.

The animal fats... they're just enough. Skielstregar is able to get his fingers under the noose and slide it up, freeing his head. Air, glorious air. The rope slips from his hands.

Vaera's attack was distracting, but Karasu's offer...

The noose snaps around his neck. He's right on the precipice! He offers no resistance.

Ghislain resisted, fighting back against his lover, his former lover who just wasn't into him that much. The slight, intellectual elf was no match for the burly hobgoblin. The little things, were the last things he saw. The school tie, knotted nicely around Waldemar's neck, his blazer. One cracked nail and the yellow plaque on a tusk as the hob yanked him by the noose and threw him over.

'I love you... why?' Was Ghislain's last thought, before his neck snapped, then the rope, then he hit the ground in front of a horrified Abby who arrived much to early for this 'present'.

It was not his last act, the love that held him to the two, twisted, becoming one with the manner of his execution. He haunted them, his anguish driving them mad, and the noose, finally pulling each of them to the same doom he experienced.

The same noose that pulls Karasu over the edge. This understanding coming with crush of his windpipe.

There's something soft in Karasu's gaze as he goes over the edge. He's accepted his fate, this fate. The crushing loss of air makes his hands fly instinctively to his neck. His body reacting to what his mind knows is inevitable. He falls. Falls and there's a disturbing _crack_ as he hits the ground. Even so he carries forward, landing quite still on the ground. Unmoving.

Dead?

Wuya screeches in horror at seeing his master crumple to the ground and streaks to the ground. Falling in a hail of black feathers and landing on Karasu's unmoving shoulder. No matter how Wuya shakes him... he remains inert. Twisted in an unnatural dance.

Randolf is focused on keeping Skiel from falling. He shuffles forward, wand raised and eyes tight with strain. But when Karasu makes that terrible offer, his eyes snap to the other man. "What the--are you -daft-, lad, ye can't--" But it's done. Skiel drops the couple of inches he was hovering as Randolf reaches out with a hand to try and catch the ghostly rope. His meaty fist passes right through the spectral weave. "NO!" He drops to his knees, leaning over the edge, face white as milk as he leans over to look. "Oh blessed Reos, raise Yer hammer an' defend us," he whispers hoarsely. He pushes back to his feet. "Missus Vaera, we have tae help that poor lad," he says. "I'll look after Skiel." He steps over to the sith to do just that, reaching down to help him to his feet. "You all right, lad?"

"Make your way down, the two of you. She says to the others, not seeing Jinks yet. The hunter clambers over on side, but loses her grip before she can let go, and there is a sound of crumpling metal in one leg for a moment before she is by the side of the Karasu and looking for her healer's kit.

The gnome takes the highwall, panting from his sprinting up the stairs. The puffs of steam billow out from his mouth and around his face as he walks onto the boards crossing the rooftops. "Coyote laughs, tallmaen..."

Jinks walks to the edge of the walls. To the ropes. He glances up to the exiles in the sky. "Children," he laments.

"Passion is hard. Love is harder." Maybe he can't see all of the ghosts but he raises his voice; he let's it carry out over the grounds. "We feel things. We want things." He sucks in a deep breath. "We take things that don't rightfully belong to us." He taps at his chest, two fingers together as he speaks his impassioned plea. "This isn't love. This is want and hate and hurt. It's twisted and broken and wrong. Whatever effort-- whatever will you have left will never make it what you want it to be."

"It's too late..." Jinks shouts, holding the edge of the walls. "Rest." <sildanyari>

The elegant sildanyari appeals are given, there is no response. Nothing moves, the rope, the noose, is gone.

The sacrifice seems to have appeased him, or them.

Abby kneels beside Karasu's broken body. She's touching him, as if to give aid, as if he was her beloved Ghislain. She's barely visible against the snow in the dark. When she turns to look upwards, there are tears in her eyes. One can see the moment her heart breaks, when the love dies, and she receives the heartache that never leaves her.

The elfin woman's body transforms into the ghastly version seen inside the library, a rotten, skeletal corpse with a soundless, wailing maw. She fades.

There is the briefest hint on a hobgoblin, standing beside Randolf, staring down before he turns, takes a step and is gone.

Skielstregar has his massive frame leaning against the roof, him catching his breath. The talons and fangs recede. The crimson in his eyes going away to nothing but a dead silver. "Thiss one... thisss one is fine..." he murmurs, holding his neck for a moment before his cleared head finally sees Karasu.

Honed instincts uncoil and he lunges out. "Wait, NO-!"

Crunch. Cringe.

He looks back to Jinks, him breathing heavily as he looks between the crushed human and the gnome. He hears the speech. Not comprehending it. But hopes it was enough to quell whatever it was wrecking havoc. He holds a hand out to Jinks"... come, Speaker Jinksss, Shaman Randolf can lower us down and-

And then the redscale makes the jump. He whips around, eyes wide. Trembling. "VAERA!" His words were booming for his size.

His talons twist the brass rooftop as he grips tight. It was now that he realized he was levitating slightly. And without a beat, he slides off the roof, hovering. And he holds out two large hands for them to stand on. "Bring usss down. Pleassse..."

The hobogoblin is not noticed. He had more important things on his mind.

Jinks slams his fist into the wall, punching it a second time for good measure. He looks to the heavens and seeks out the Grey Harpist twinkling faintly in the sky. Verna isn't here. Nor Ashlee.

"Do your fucking job," he growls before shimmying down the rope, dropping into the bushes, and stumbling over the Karasu.

The gnome gneels, singing and pushing his way through the Weave. He founds the version of Karasu that landed softly, his fall cushioned by the bushes at the base of the wall. The minstel pushes through what is and pulls to be what isn't. Wounds knit and he sniffs and blinks away tears.

Randolf goes to clamber back down the ladder, trotting back out to where Karasu has fallen. There's not a whole lot he can do to assist in the healing. But... the professor from earlier catches his eye. He lumbers over to the man, gripping his wand in a white-knuckled grip. His eyes are blazing with fury, his beard bristling fearsomely. But when he speaks, his tone is dark and quiet, laden with menace. "Harmless, are they?" He whips his wand to point at Karasu. "Oh aye. -Perfectly- harmless." He snaps the wand back up to within a inch of the professor's nose. "Get. Yer shit. -Sorted-," he snarls. "Or so help me -Reos-, I'll tear every last fuckin' -stone- in this place down! There's wee -children- studyin' the mystic arts here." He holds his glare on the man a moment longer, before whirling around with a billow of robes. He steps back to where Jinks and Vaera are tending Karasu. "What can I do tae help, friends?" he asks heavily.

Karasu lays on the ground, deathly still as Wuya tries to wake him. The bird makes agravated noises as others approach. Trying to keep them from the body. Trying to protect his master. It's a token gesture however and once he realizes that you're here to help, he allows it.

Karasu gasps as he comes back to the land of the living, biting his lip from the pain of his now-broken legs. So that nothing leaves his lips but a soft exhalation of breath. He looks up at the group of you and nods; closes his eyes.

"Thank Vardama."

Jinks smirks, leaning over Karasu after his song rests. His beringed fingers linger over the mind, wiggling as they untangle from the Weave. "Harpist nothing..." the gnome grunts.

Dramatis Personae

Skielstregar
This tarnished bronze scaled Sith-Makar stands at an imposing seven foot two and three hundred and thirty pounds. He stares down at most with a slight squint, the narrowed silver eyes lacking the luster of life that most have. Some fangs poke out from his maw, a sight he tends to hide behind too long talons. His tarnished scales fight to overlap each other, though some patches are growing in a brilliant silver in seemingly random spots. He walks wide and heavy, felt before heard. And something feels slightly off around him.

A large quiver rests on his back with a few spear heads poking out over his shoulder, with a halbred crossed over the other side in its frog. With him being so large, a heavy shield is attached to his hip with a long bandolier of daggers and handaxes. Well worn and dented armor covers his torso, legs, and tail, with a large faded pendant of a dragon's profile dangling from a silver chain on his neck with simple cloth clothes under it all. However, his arms are left unarmored, bite marks of a large maw present all along both. Scarred and recent. Though, all of this- save the weapons- is usually hidden by a poncho. The top half a brown, with the bottom half stitched on, a blue color.

When he's not armored, Skielstregar wears a simple light brown tunic with his silver chained symbol around his neck, and a silver bangle affixed midway on his tail.

<OOC> Cryosanthia says, "So, there's falling and willingly jumping down, and using acrobatics too. If you are willing jumping, the 1st 10' doesn't count, and with a DC15, the second 10 is non lethal. So that'd be 1d6 NL, 3d6 L with a successful DC15, or 5d6 if you let the noose drag you off."
