Feathered Menace, Part 2

Players: Glasha, Hades

GM: Thurid

Summary: A team of adventurers are hired to protect an airship making the passage through the Redridge mountains from monster attacks, in the hopes of deterring the monsters from continuing to attack in the future. After dispatching the crow swarm, they have some time to catch their breath and swab the decks before they encounter a pair of harpies. Their songs almost draw Glasha to her doom, but the pair are able to defeat them once the music ends.

The adventurers have been hired and the flight is underway- traversing a pass in the redridge mountains, they are aboard an airship defending it from monster attacks. The first of such attacks came in the form of a vast swarm of crows, lead by a horse-sized corvid beast, whom they have managed to dispatch. It's taken some time, around an hour, to swab the decks of blood and feathers but the skies have been crisp and clear and uneventful during this time.

THey are now passnig into a region of fog- clouds drawn low from the sky by the downward slope of the mountains. The lack of wind here is vaguely unsettling, even if it does make for smooth sailing, but it means visibility is poor. Not an ideal situation for keeping lookout for monsters. The fog also seeps through armor and clothing alike, sapping the heat from everything abovedecks.

<OOC> Thurid says, "The airship is equipped with ballistae, which you are free to use if you like. Four total. They are considered Martial weapons."

Glasha stands on deck, her outfit thick bundles of furs, today, despite having brought no other garments. The mostly black fur seems to have grown on an animal exactly her size, but dress-shaped, as it doesn't seem to have any seams whatsoever on it. There are specks of shimmering fur that mirror the pattern of stars in the sky, complete with a current-phase moon on the middle of Glasha's upper back.

Luna, Glasha's raven familiar, sits grumpily atop Glasha's axe-staff, having only her natural feathers to protect her from the cold. Glasha's greataxe has been freshly cleaned after the incident with the murder of crows, and the raven now sits atop it with no apparent regard for the fact that it sliced through quite a few of her fellow corvids.

Hades was brought along on this voyage to guard the ship against monster attacks. He's uncertain this will necessarily go well, but you never know. He's dressed in a mixture of armor and robes, and seems to be reading a book dedicated to the Trickster God, Tarien. He ponders a long moment in the silence before his eyes lift up to see the steady fog that has befallen all.

He closes his book and rises to his feet, taking his trident in his hand and holding it steadily. "I have a bad feeling about this." Hades murmurs.

The fog seems unyielding- it cuts visibility down to less than a hundred feet. Thankfully, the route is well known by the pilot and the airship posesses instruments to allow it to navigate between the peaks without risk of dashing upon the stony mountains. Nevertheless, it is unerring when the snow-capped mountaintops come rearing out of the fog like strange behemoths. The sun hangs high overhead- an inistinct blob of light, that diffuses throughout the foggy environs, too pale and distant to burn away the clouds.

<OOC> Thurid says, "Alright, for the time being, neither of you see anything."

Glasha nods, though she says nothing in return to Hades. She wasn't hurt in the last attack, but it wouldn't take much for that to change for the worse. Only having a few people above deck at a time was probably wise, giving some time to rest, but she would have been happier, it seemed, having everybody up on deck when trouble struck.

Hades doesn't appear to spot -anything- in this dense fog, so he holds his trident a little bit tighter as he takes that deep breath. In and out, calm your senses. "I can't see anything in this fog, and the cold may strike us down before monsters do." he answers, apparently not too big a fan of the freezing cold, but then again, what Half-Elf is? "Be prepared." he tells Glasha.

The first sign that anything is amiss comes not to the eyes, but to the ears of the brave adventurers. A strange, distant, at once lilting and melancholy song. It's muted, by the fog, but begins to grow louder and clearer. The voices singing are beautiful, enticing- supernaturally so. It becomes difficult to focus on doing anything but listening to the song as it grows clearer.

<OOC> Thurid says, "Will saves, DC16"

Glasha perks up as the music washes over her. She begins walking forward on the deck. It's unclear if she's trying to get a better look, but even Luna looks more at peace as Glasha slowly moves up the ship.

GAME: Hades rolls Knowledge/Dungeoneering: (20)+8: 28 'GM Note: I realized after the fact that this was the wrong skill for Monstrous Humanoid Knowledge. Whoops.'

Hades recognizes the call: a Harpy Song. Thankfully, he mutters the willpower to fend off the influence of the spell, but he notices Glasha seemingly moving towards the song. In response, Hades twirls his Trident to block Glasha with its point in a threatening stance, as if he were prepared to stab her. "Awaken!" he commands, though he believes that she could snap out of it if threatened, he's uncertain they can get far enough to no longer hear the sound in the right amount of time...so this will have to do.

<OOC> Thurid says, "Make another will save, same DC, Glasha"

GAME: Glasha rolls Will: (16)+5: 21

<OOC> Thurid says, "Also give me another round of perception checks, just -5 this time."

GAME: Glasha rolls Perception-5: (3)+1+-5: -1

GAME: Hades rolls Perception-5: (14)+5+-5: 14

Glasha is absolutely out of it until Hades rushes in front of her and aims something pointy at her. She looks definitely irritated as she's being threatened, though that drains pretty quickly from her face as she realizes she was out of it for a moment and now she's very close to the edge of the ship. She looks up at Luna, who also seems to be coming to her senses. The two look at each other knowingly. Luna could easily have soared to safety, but Glasha is notoriously lacking in wings for such aerial acrobatics.

The song continues, growing in volume as its source draws nearer. It's haunting and unnerving, emminating from the fog as it is. As Glasha snaps out of it, another voice joins the chorus- the two harmonizing and rising in timbre and urgency. Hades catches sight of dark wings, and the glint of metal flitting in and out of the fog, about fifty yards ahead of the bow of the airship.

As soon as Hades notices Glasha snap out of it, he brings his trident back to a resting position. "Welcome back." he comments with a light smile, before his attention turns to the distance, where he sees it. "Harpies, fifty yards ahead of the bow!" He calls out, even as he approaches the bow of the ship himself, he speaks in the mystic Eldritch language, before touching himself in the chest. Those who are aware of such things may realize he's just cast SHIELD on himself. "Steady as she goes!" He calls. "And Beware the Harpy's Call!" lest it enslave their minds to their bidding.

<OOC> Thurid says, "Oh, nice. You keep the spell, just barely."

The secong Harpy's song beckons to Glasha just as the first did- perhaps she's already predisposed towards following it, the melody is after all hauntingly beautiful, especially now that a second voice has joined the chorus. Glasha finds her vision going fuzzy, as she puts one foot infront of the other towards the railing at the edge of the boat. She begins to climb up onto it before she realizes what she's doing, and finds herself staring down into the seemingly endless expanse of fog below when she comes to her senses.

The harpies, their songs ignored, become enraged- the singing ends abruptly, replaced with ficious, rage-filled screeching and the hard beating of wings as they sweep towards the airship, emerging from the fog on dark wings.

Concentrating on a spell apparently takes a lot of chutzpah, mentally, and while Glasha's hands and mouth are doing unnatural things to force her will into the world, her feet move forward. She steps up onto the railing with a surprisingly limber move. She raises her foot to step off toward the song again, but her eyes go wide and her words get quiet a bit louder in surprise! She puts her foot down to the railing of the ship as she struggles to keep her hands going in the right way to break through reality to what's on the other side while also keeping her balance.

<OOC> Glasha says, "So, there should now be an air elemental 35' closer to my foes."

<OOC> Thurid says, "Alright, it's about halfway between you and the nearest harpy. What will it do?"

<OOC> Thurid says, "Hades, you're up. You see both harpies, now- one of them is engaged with the air elemental, the other is 60' directly ahead of you."

Glasha begins repeating herself, focusing hard, as if somehow that will keep her safe. She chokes up to the head of her axe-staff, putting the bottom on the deck to try to keep herself steady as she casts another spell.

As Glasha finishes the first spell, the thick, grey clouds seem to come together in a coherent form into an air elemental, given shape by the elemental plane of air at Glasha's command. It rushes off toward her enemies, swinging its cloudy fists, though it hits nothing but air. Obviously, that bit of air owed the elemental money or something.

<OOC> Hades says, "sounds great :D can I use a Hand of the Apprentice ability to throw my trident at it and summon it back?"

Here they come.

Hades whispers an Eldritch incantation as he extends his hand outward, firing a beam of magical energy at one of the harpies! He manages to strike her surely enough, though the hit is not a crippling one, he smirks at striking it all the same as he redies himself for battle. The harpy does a flyby on him, which he moves out of the way at the moment and and smirks a bit.

"Stubborn creatures."

The harpies spread their wings and prepare to dive in towards the airship- one of them is intercepted by the air elemental, and she beats her wings to halt her advance and avoid the elemental's strike- before swinging her morningstar at it twice, though neither attack manages to land true on the wispy form.

The other continues, letting our a piercing warcry as she hurtles towards Hades- swinging the blood-rusted iron ball and chain at him and smashing a chunk of the railing, though failing to find purchase on her target.

Glasha finishes up her spell and turns to leap down as another batch of cloud congeals before rushing off to beat up that jerk air that obviously did something wrong that's hanging out around that harpy. Now on the deck again, Glasha moves to swing her axe-staff, displacing Luna, who vaults into the air just before Glasha sinks the masterfully hand-crafted and silvered axe blade deep into harpy flesh.

Hades decides to lob his trident after the Harpy, but alas, the thing is a wiley one and causes him to miss. Thankfully, Hades can recall his weapon without it going over the edge, causing it to soar back to his grasp. Next, he rushes over to the Harpy, intending to flank it.

<OOC> Thurid says, "Nah, withdraw action."

The harpy fighting the two air elementals decides she does not like being outnumbered one bit, and she begins to sing again- her melancholy voice calls to the core of the elementals, reminding them of the howling winds of their home plane. They lower their arms, drifting close to the beguiling figure, and becoming passive.

THe wounded harpy lets out a shrill cry of pain as Glasha's axe bites deep, and she flaps her wings- one of them now trailing blood- to gain height and move away from the pair of them.

<OOC> Thurid says, "Hades, you're up."

Glasha, without a word, points her finger at the fleeing harpy. The stars on her furs flash as two bolts of arcane energy depart. As they fly toward the Harpy, Glasha calmly walks back toward the wheelhouse, arm extended for Luna, who swoops down to land on her bicep just as a call of harpy pain erupts from the bird-woman. Glasha's staff tap, tap, taps as she crosses the deck without looking back.

<OOC> Hades says, "I'm going to move towards the Harpy that seems to be fleeing...can I man one of the ballistae and shoot at it?"

Hades attempts to fire off the Ballista, but the shot misses completely! THe Harpy attempts to retaliate by swiping at him in a fly by, but thankfully, the Harpy misses! swiping at nothing but air instead as he takes a deep breath. "We need them taken out now!" he calls.

The harpies are taking a beating, but don't look ready to give up just yet- one of them swoops in closer, still singing her song, and with the elementals trailing along behind her- still captivated by her song. The other, wounded harpy cries out in fury as she is struck by yet more magic missiles- but exacts her vengeance on the closer target- or tries to. She sweeps in, past the Ballistae bolt coming her way, she spins about, doing an Aeleron roll about the projectile as it whips past her- and the heavy morningstar clutched in taloned hand sweeps past Hades once more. She rears her wings, and rises into the air above the deck once again. "Foolish, pitiful, land-bound creaturess. The sky belongss to uss!" she squawks at them.

Glasha might feel a little guilty for being so catty if not for the attempted murder. As the harpy drops to fly in, Glasha lifts her greataxe and swings it back and up and over her head and down, sinking it through the harpy's skull and planting the naked bird lady on the deck. "Play dead," she says. "Stay. Good girl." She puts a foot on one side of the corpse's skull and with a jerking motion, jerks the greataxe free, clearly done with this.

Hades ditches the Ballistae and throws his trident again, only to miss! The singing Harpy apparently also good in combat enough to keep evading Hades. His eyes narrow. "Damned bird." He looks to Glasha. "A moment of your time?" he questions her. Time to free her elementals and, for the sake of Tarien, kill the damned harpy.

The harpy's song cuts off abruptly as the trident whirs past her. She snaps her attention onto Hades, and lunges towards him swinging her flail and- once more, the flail is thrown wide, and smashes a hole in the deck below. The elementals do not awaken right away, the memory of the song still playing in their throughts- though they are sluggish to follow her, as they begin to slowly come to their senses.

Hades narrows his eyes as his attack with his Trident misses once more. Though he smiles a little bit as he puts his mischievous ways to good use, making creating a copy of himself (Mirror Image/Copycat) and a supernatural copy of himself appears out of thin air, seemingly, both of them smiling and entering an attack formation. Of course, the harpy attacks him directly before they can cause confusion and it would've broken his defenses, were it not for his mystic shield suddenly flashing and sparking in response to the morningstar's attack. The two claws seem to miss him completely.

<OOC> Thurid says, "Oh, the attack missed by 5 or less, so your mirror image is destroyed Hades"

<OOC> Thurid says, "Ah, glasha, good timing. I assumed you and your elementals would all melee with flanking. Elemental landed a light hit, and you landed a hit but I haven't rolled damage yet."

GAME: Glasha rolls 1d12+3: (7)+3: 10

<OOC> Thurid says, "A solid hit, she is moderately wounded."

<OOC> Thurid says, "I'll let you pose you and the elementals while I pose the Harpy"

The harpy swings her morningstar once again- and finds purchase only on the shimmering field of light conjured into existance by hades. She howls in frustration, wings beating, though the attack glances close enough to dismiss that mirror image that just popped into existance, dispersing it as quickly as it came.

The elementals, shaking off the song, fly back into the fray, swinging their slamming pseudoarms at the harpy, one managing to graze the dextrous bird-beast. Glasha, meanwhile, takes the opportunity to sink her greataxe into the harpy's flank, adding to the collection of bird-woman blood she's collecting on it.

<OOC> Thurid says, "And you finish her off."

The harpy- seeing she is surrounded and her sister is dead, lets her guard down as she reaches for a bone horn slung from her belt. She lifts it towards her lips, aparently intending to sound it.

The harpy flaps, hovering, trying to get something. That hesitation is all Glasha and her minions need to lay into her. The two air elementals smash into her back, sending her reeling into Glasha's greataxe. Pinned between Glasha's forces and Hades, the harpy is like a fish in a barrel...if fish could fly.

With Glasha sending the Harpy down and the Elementals keeping her there, Hades lifts his Trident and stabs the thing in the back not once, but -twice-! Ensuring his weapon is stained with the blood of the harpy before he even thinks about pulling it out.

"Ah, there. That wasn't so bad." Hades says with a playful smirk on his face. "Good work, everyone." Yes, he compliments the Air Elementals too, because they deserve it as well!

The air elementals disperse as Glasha lets go of them. "Thank you," she says before the life in their eyes becomes just more cloud, dispersing into the miasma the ship flies through. Glasha then groans. "I really need to sleep," she protests. "How did I get stuck with both watches?"

The harpy lets out one more cry of agony as she is run through and smashed from every angle- and she looses her grip on the horn, as well as this mortal coil- she begins to tumble down, trailing blood as she slams into bulbous lower hull of the ship and then falls away into the misty abyss below.
