Background

Dain Skyhammer was born on the windy peaks of an outskirt beyond Anvil Peak. As a child, he was fascinated by the griffon riders and often played amongst them. But his father Dayl Skyhammer and his mother Maine Skyhammer were strict parents and Dain a contemplative middle child often clashed with their authoritative style compared to his domineering older sister the warrior Fa-Mayle and his younger brat brother Mayl. He was an odd dwarf by many standards, one of the Stormborn and thus outcasts born to live under an never ending sky and yet he'd rather play with the griffons than practice at war. His father put him through the standard dwarf training and his sister made it extra hard on him. Each time he was found playing with the griffons he was punished further by more and more brutal strength work outs developing Dain's musculature into something quite impressive. His efforts taught him the basic dwarf skills and built strength that almost made his family proud of him.

Eventually, his father was summoned to help guard the efforts to rebuild some of the roads that had been damaged. In an effort to make the boy a man, his father took him with him. Dain was in his late 20s by this point and seeing ever more the divide between him and other dwarves. On the road with the builders, they went through several lands where the wilderness had overtaken the old roads. Dain often looked at things differently, instead of seeing were the woods needed to be hacked or the ground leveled he say the way the animals used the land and would stick up for their right to use it, pushing for ways that both stonework and nature could work together.

One day, an elven druid named Eilda came to speak with the dwarves about another path they planned to bulldoze (with actual bulls) through a wooded area. Eilda watched Dain's support of nature and after the meeting asked Dain to be tested in the secret Druidic arts. Dain was hesitant but accepted. After the test Eilda told him that he had the gift, if he chose to pursue it. Dain gave it serious thought then informed his father of his interest in becoming a druid.

There had been better father/son discussions. Dayl beat his son savagely who in a greater show of insult refused to fight back against his father. The wise son argued that it would disrespect the man. But Dain was possibly stronger than his father, and the refusal to stand up to the hardy warrior resulted in the older dwarf feeling the sting of his own possible inferiority. Spitting in the face of his son, the older dwarf sent the boy out. In a final act of anger and perhaps compassion, his father hurled his prized warhammer after his son. When his son picked it up, the old man warned him, "Don't you DARE lose it.."

Dain hasn't so far.. its been with him for a long time now.. decades have passed. He studied hard with Eilda, traveling through the wilderness, guided through a portal to Am'Shere where the druids are strong. He learned Sylvan, how to survive, and much about animals and nature. Unfortunately, his alienation from his own people and especially his family left him with difficulties connecting to others, even Thrud, the She-tiger Eilda guided him in raising from a cub. Eventually, Eilda sent Dain off as a guardian of the Green Word to do the things he had tried to do in the past with his Father's people.. Thus, he arrives through the Portal into Alexandros and once more in the known world.
