  • Title: DEVA Station, part 13, the End
  • Emitter: Cryosanthia
  • Characters: Thurid, Tenoc, Merek, Shalethiste
  • Place: H01: Kultari Road - DEVA Station
  • Time: Sunday, March 21, 2021, 2:15 PM
  • Summary: Ezrechu's body has been given final rites and Gentle Repose, so it can be returned to Blar. Inspector Yolam Murmurboggle has arrived, to release Doctor Deaztor and arrest Captain Infalia. Everyone asks him if he's crazy. The helpful innocent is under arrest and the evil doctor behind it all is being let free? Murmurboggle explains that the Nobles feel the only crimes committed under Alexandrian jurisdiction are the captain's. Thurid and Shalethiste straighten him out swiftly, with explanations, though it's clear it will turn physical. No evidence of crimes against Alexandrians by Deaztor can be produced, so she is released per the nobles' instructions, although Murmurboggles requests that she be safely taken to Blar and turns her notes over to the team. A few days later, the DEVA STATION Camp is completely empty. The druidess, Ovola Thistleborne, says the only way to be sure the land is clean is fire, lots of fire. Merek obliges, raining destruction down around the Way Station. When the ground cools off, Ovola will restore the plant-life. All stand, watching the place that has occupied them for months burn. Flames consume everything, all evidence they were there. It is finished, though some threads remain.

From east to west, north to south, the Alexandrosian countryside weaves over hill, valley, and farmland. Kultari Road meanders through it at a comfortable pace. The roadside is lined with curbstones, their surfaces comfortably flat and warm, with sand pressed inbetween. At times construction meanders into dirt, and numerous pathways branch off here and there to different farmsteads.

Along this stretch is a waystation. Over its door is a carved marker with dual symbols of Gilead and Tarien, the patrons of travel and the meeting of wilderness-and-civilization, respectively. Not large, the waystation rests a comfortable ways from the main avenue, with a place for a firepit out front.

Towards the south, the sky and landscape darkens. The Felwood lies there, and an occasional screech from inhuman lungs may be heard.

Towards the east, the shining City of Alexandria.

Fates of the Prisoners

DEVA STATION - Later in the day.

Colonel Ezrechu's body is ready for the transport. The battlegrounds were cleaned up, to a degree, a pool of mixed blood being seen as a bad omen and a health hazard even if DEVA Station is wrapping up.

Inquisitor Yolam Murmurboggle has been off doing things. He eventually finds the healers grouped together. With him are two Alexandrian guards, and between them, Captain Infalia in chains. He looks up at everyone, extra upwards at Thurid, and pulls on his mustache a little before curling it back into place.

"So, the last thing to resolve is Doctor Deaztor. The Temples deferred to Alexandrian authority, and they are inclined to let her go."

Infalia completely ignores this, interrupting, staring at Thurid, Shalethiste, and Tenoc, "Hey, ye gotta help. They's takin' me!" Tenoc pays the same respect: he ignores Infalia, with little else than the slow rustle of his tail behind to betray idle thoughts. Watching. Waiting.

...praying silently that gobbers do not think of gunpowder to pack with.

Thurid spies the familiar Infalia, "Why on earth is she in chains?" Thurid asks then, standing from where she had been sitting near a fire. "She has been instrumental in bringing this to a resolution." she says then. And then another shocking revelation comes to and she grits her teeth, "Are you insane?" she asks. "While the Colenels regrettable decisions had to be answered for, she was misguided- believing that she did what is best. This 'doctor' serves none but herself and her sick curiosity. It should be she in chains, not the Captain." she says then as she takes a step towards the inquisitor and the guards. Taller than any of them, though that's not a particularly unusual feat for one of giants blood.

Merek looks between everyone, perhaps a little bit thoughtful, and nods then to Thurid along with Tenoc. While he watches while Infalia is within chains, a look to Shalethiste. The man scratches along his cheek, he doesn't know what to think about it, he will generally listen to see what reasoning there was.

The guards look like regular Alexandrian guards, not especially threatening or experienced. One is male, he has a beard, the other it's hard to tell. Their armour isn't form fitting or flattering, and there could be a young man or woman underneath it all. They're holding onto the manacles and Infalia seems well treated enough, besides being in chains. They rock their weight back as Thurid approaches.

Inquisitor Yolam Murmurboggle, does not. Which puts him somewhere in the vicinity of Thurid's knee. He adjusts his cumberbund as he stares all the way up. He scratches at his cheek.

"Ha ha," He laughs. Nervously? Confidently. Something more the latter. He waggles a finger up at Thurid in admonishment, "It is not my decision. The Temples asked the Castle to handle it. The Nobles, the Regent, they don't care what happens outside the borders of Alexandros in another soverign nation. They don't want to be drawn into this war, or any other war. Alexandria and her lands are their sole concern. Whatever the Doctor did, it was on alien territory to non-Alexandrians."

He taps at his chin thoughtfully, "if you found a victim of hers that was Alexandrian, perhaps... but then they would question why a citizen was fighting in a foreign war. Ah! That cuuld be suspicious."

He adjusts his cumberbund again, "So, Blar can try Deaztor for her crimes against their soldiers. The nobles consider it a diplomatic favour to even hand her over."

"And why is Infalia in chains?" Thurid asks, looking way down towards the inquisitor. She looms over him, though that's only partially intended. "What fool made the decision that she ought to be gaoled when the doctor goes free?" she asks then. "Or are these nobles so cowardly that they won't exact justice on the deserving wicked, but on civilians who did what they might to help in all of this?" she asks then. "I will not stand for it." she states, matter of factly. She doesn't move for her hammer, but she doesn't seem particularly keen on backing down from her position, either.

Tenoc rumbles in soft addition. A grin-- sharp, toothsome, and particularly steaming. Obvious where he stands in support for the giantess!

"Ah, that is straightforward." Murmurboggle says, "The captain of the Airship brought these diseases over Alexandros soil, to Alexandria. She broke the quarantine order she received when she first tried to land. She was supposed to remain here, grounded. Instead she left three times, twice to return with more patients, possibly infecting her whole flight path. She repeatedly brought a plague ship into Alexandrian territory. They want to hold her accountable for all this expense."

Infalia stares, her mouth dropping open, "It was orders! I was helping thems with the cure. The ship was clean! We cleaned it!" Her eyes flick back to Shalethiste, Thurid, her expression pleading.

"That may be so. A judge will have to review the available facts." The gnome adds with a shrug, looking at Infalia, "You may be a pawn in this, but the queen is unavailable. The nobles will take what they can, those were their orders."

Merek does not offer a lot, he just nods a bit, "Please, if you would, release Infalia, and take the doctor in," he states. "I don't want to make it be so if you would please." The man smiles a bit.

"Do you serve any purpose?" Thurid asks the Inquisitor, "Besides a messenger for the nobles who hold your yoke?" she wonders. She looks to Infalia, then back to the Inquisitor. "Numerous clerics, myself included, ensured that no trace of disease was present aboard before it left. Her airship was instrumental in finding a cure for the bloody fingers, and too in discovering the war crimes being comitted in this conflict- a task afforded us by your own order." she says to him. "And now you wish to throw her to the wolves, a scrap of meat to appease blind fools, while allowing true villains to go free. I /will/ not stand for it." she says then.

Tenoc is silent, but turns a jaundiced gaze down on the Inquisitor. Levelly. Ominous.

"Every action the Captain took was in according to the advisement of the people acting as the will of Alexandria in this crisis." Shaletheiste replies in her velvety steel tone as she steps toward Infallia, "Every trip, as was stated, was done with thorough cleansing and seperation to prevent cross infection."

Her eyes narrow, amethyst glaciers, and swivel toward the functionary so orchestrating this farce, "The decisions made behind the comfortable shield of Alexandria's walls, to bring the sick of -both- armies here, potentially bringing four plagues to the city? Which amongst -you- would answer for a calamity had one ensued?"

"Without her aid, resolving any of these plagues if not having been impossible, would have at best potentially taken months whence an outbreak may well have occured! Or some flag-prompted bloodbath twixt our patients, one that could have engulfed the camp, and would have -demanded- a response. -WHO- amongst -YOU- would stand tall before Gods and folk and bear their judgement had such occured?"

"None, likely." the Mul says with a slow shake of her head, "I will not see one wrongfully bound, one who risked her all and helped save the hundreds of infected and the countless multitude spared of risk by her deeds while the true monster is set to renew her abominations." Her voice goe deathly soft, "By the Sky Dancer's light, I will see her free."

"I serve Truth and Justice," Murmurboggle says, answering Thurid dismissively. He takes out a small notebook which he opens and starts writing in, "and it seems I do not have all the facts. Infalia may claim her ship was clean, but she's not qualified to judge, or authorized to decide she can leave quarantine."

The guards holding Infalia are staring at Shalethiste. It's clear neither of them want to be here, and are letting the gnome do all the talking. The unshaven one shakes her head a little. His head. Still hard to tell.

Murmurboggle stares up, hands on his hips attempting to look wider because he can't look any taller. Even Shalethiste makes him crane his neck. "But both of you are. You assert her ship was checked by several clerics, verified free of disease and that she was acting under the direction of one of the representatives of Daeus, Eluna, Vardama, Althea or Angoron at all times? Can you supply the names of the other clerics?" The gnome holds the notebook and pen up for either to take. He's written out a statement, left spots for signatures and a space to write in names.

He looks over at Infalia, "It appears the Alexandrian Nobles might owe you an apology, and payment for services rendered. Feel free to draw up an invoice."

He taps his chin some more, "Who decided to mix the armies. THAT is an interesting question that will be looked into."

Mixing them by infection was Shalethiste's idea, due to the circumstances, but there was a decision to send them all to the same place, instead of two places, which was beyond her control and forced her hand.

Thurid shakes her head a bit at the gnome's dismissive answer, "I have seen no evidence of that. You serve laws and the nobles that pen them." she says then, "But you are at least capable of reason. I will sign." she says, and gestures for the book. "Visiting Caldera Saute was on my order, as was collecting the sick from Stone Talon." she says then, as she signs her name on the statement to that effect. "She will be released now." she says- over the Inquisitor's head to the guards. "By you or by me, I care little." she adds. A look back towards the inquisitor, "Or is Alexandria in the business of assuming guilt until the facts show otherwise, now?" she asks him.

Transcribed is roughly what Thurid and Shalethiste said, confirming that Infalia, her airship and her crew were clean and she was acting under orders. Also noted is she didn't leave of her own accord, was compliant in camp and otherwise obeyed quarantine orders. Any priestly types can sign and be identified for corrobratoin.

Tenoc chuffs as he watches curiously. Shakes his head-- still. Somber. Loom!

..much as one can when the other is taller by hair. Harumph.

Merek will sign the book if offered it, at least to note he will verify what all was said, with that he nods to people in thought. "I think that's all we need," he notes, while he takes a drink from the flask with him.

The Silver Guard steps foward and gives the paper a quick scan to verify what she's signing, then, as the others complete their signature, she elegantly scribes her name in the approprirate place.

The guards warrant a look, less steely than reserved and, "Her chains, if you would?" she asks in an almost sweet tone.

"One of the nobles was very specific about having someone in chains to parade around as a personal Triumph for all the great effort he put in resolving this." Murmurboggle says, looking over at his guards and nodding. They follow his orders, or Thurid's or Shalethiste's, and Infalia is released in a fumbling hurry. The hobgob Captain immediately moves away from the pair, to lurk beside Thurid. The Jotun is very easy to hide beside, especially with a natural slouch. The unshaven guard hands the chains to Shalethiste. The gnome makes a point of looking around in an exagerated fashion, "I'm sure you saw him here every day, why there... oh too late."

He takes out a pack of cigarettes, taps it three times to make one fall out, holds it between thumb and forefinger while he produces a lighter. He doesn't light the stick yet. Instead, he looks over at Merek. "Some of your notes were found among Doctor Deaztor's papers. We examined her documents and there's no evidence she created the disease. She did discover a cure, but felt it took too long, so she abandonned it. She conducted a lot of unethical experiments. However, they were all with the implied consent of Blar soldiers and in line with her colonel's directives to get them back in fighting shape. As well, there was a document assigning her to Ezrechu, from Blar Army command. This was the basis for determining it's an internal matter for Blar to handle, and the instruction to let her go."

Murmurboggle frowns, staring very intently at the Seer, "Did you go through them? Did you perhaps find some fact that was missed, or remove something that would change this decision?"

"Of course they were." Thurid grumbles, making clear her increasingly dim view of the nobles of Alexandria. She offers Infalia a gap-toothed grin when the captain heads over, and claps her on the shoulder- it's supposed to be reassuring, but it probably feels more like an assault. Then again, she's worked with bugbears, so that might well be where the slouch comes from. "Now, I have a grim task ahead, and I'd get to it sooner than later." she says, frowning a bit. "If there's anything else you need of me, now is the time." she says, tapping a foot impatiently as she looks towards the Inquisitor.

Tenoc turns his gaze down, staring intently at the smaller Inquisitor. Glower. Silently!

"I take your meaning." Shelly replies with a sidelong glance to the anyplace their noble benefactor was clearly absconded from. She watches the Captain be loosed her bonds, then, and accepts the jewelry with a gracious, "My thanks, goodmen."

THe Inquisitor's musings about Frau Doktor's experimentation draws a frown and the slow shake of her head, "In our presence, she asked a clearly incognizant patient for consent, and attempted to apply her rage potion before even one within his wits would be able to respond. This under protest by the officer on hand."

"I apologize, all of the politics are a bit... I don't know what to say, all I can say is that Infalia saved a lot of people when she was listening to us," Merek notes, nodding a bit to everyone. "I don't like the way a doctor like that would treat anyone." He then notes of the doctor.

Murmurboggle is skilled at glaring up. He seems to receive them as some sort of perverse approval. Upset people are more likely to accidentally spill the beans, and he's watching for little slips.

The gnome nods slowly upwards at Shalethiste, "In a perfect world her crimes would be punished but the will has to be there. Even Blar might say the soldier gave consent when they signed up."

"It's not enough for Alexandria to get involved. I'm not sure what would be." He sighs, listening carefully to Merek's answer, then says, "Understood, but no new evidence. I see." His notebook returned, he pockets it. "Well, that is all. The Bludguni caravan drover, the goblin Major Kreemo, is also being sought. If you see him, tell him to turn himself in."

He lights his cigarette and strides off, with the guards doing an awkward shuffle-step to match his slow pace. The Inquisitor has only gone a few steps when he turns and looks back, "Oh, just one more thing. Can you make sure Doctor Deaztor makes it safely to Blar. The Temples would prefer she doesn't perform her work in Alexandrian territory."

Thurid nods her head, "Aye, I need to bear the Colonel's body back." Thurid tells the Inquisitor, looking down for a moment and shaking her head again. "I will escort the doctor as well." she says. "You have my assurances I shan't harm a hair on her head, despite my better judgement, along the way." she adds. She finally takes a step back now that Infalia is freed and the stand off seems to be settling down. Tension eases, and-- subtly --Tenoc relaxes by the smallest of measures. Steam wafts in drifting tendrils; he glances around, from one to another as focus relents, turning to broad survey.

All is better, if not well.

Merek nods a bit to everyone, and will begin to make a way along to stand with the party, waiting for everything to finish. "Well, it looks like that's all finished."

Shalethiste hmmm's, then arches an eyebrow, "Major Kreemo, whatever for?" she wonders of the Gnome, absently straightening up the knot of steel in her hands.

Thurid's offer is made, then, and the Mul adds, "Have efforts been made to determine if the Doctor is in proper rein of her own decisions?"

"Excellent. Oh, same thing they wanted Infalia for, bringing disease to Alexandria. No one invited his caravan. And the doctor? Well she's at least as stable and competent as any gnome, Ha ha!" The gnome heads off, laughing at that little joke with guards in tow. The unshaven one glances briefly back at Shalethiste with grateful eyes.

Infalia held up well under Thurid's shoulder slap; she does work with bugbears. Inspired, she calls after Inquisitor Murmurboggle, "Ai'll send you an Invoice. It'll be 'Fee Waived', cause it was charity work, but iff'n I get more trouble I'll give it ta the Blar military to collect. They was commandiered me ship and would have things ta say, let yer Nobles know that!"

Murmurboggle waves a finger in the air, as if ticking off a box. He's heard. The message will be delivered.

Infalia stands a little taller, rubs at her wrists again, "Thanks all y'all. I shoulda got a medal an' not those, but I know it was good work. Happy ta be free."

Burning the Camp

A few days later.

The camp is all packed up. What could be salvaged was, though few things were. Metal items, tent poles, bed frames, utensiles, surgery equipment, bed pans, all things that could be cleaned were, then sent off to scrappers to be melted down and turned into something needed but undesireable, like sewage grates, anchors. Something that wouldn't get a lot of person-contact. Everything else capable of contamination was put on the bonfire. Even unused bandages. There weren't a lot, and no one wants to be responsible for another plague because they pinched a few coppers.

Infalia's airship was sterilized once more, and is moored a little ways down the road from the camp. The area itself, the vast four fields and the Way Station are empty, and have been checked. Even Mikilos' Mages' Magical Mansion has been reassured empty.

Ovola Thistleborne, Druid of the Green Circle, has been doing the final examination. She returns to the group, comfortable in the cold somehow in her simple white dress and headband of holly and berries. Her feet are bare, muddy, it's spattered up her hem. She's been striding through the fields of matted grass, melted snow, and mud. She looks on the remaining healers and says, "It's so wounded. The whole earth, all those trees. All the suffering. You wouldn't believe it. They cry, they cry out so much to me. It hurts."

Indeed, the druid has tears. Her voice crackles, "There's no other option. You have to burn it all. Fireball everything and then I'll bring back the plants."

Thurid has never been especially woodsy, but even she can see the damage that was done, "Aye, true, the land is wounded as much as the people- but hear this. I met a Dryad who has spent an aeon holding back a mountain, standing on the edge of a volcano. Have no doubt, the trees'll be back in the blink of an eye by the way they count the days." she says, trying to offer the Druid a reasuring smile. She has spent the intervening time visiting the Colonel's corpse each day, and keeping the Gentle Repose spell cast upon it that she can remain intact until she's given leave to ferry it home.

Tenoc is even more stoic than normal, if such is possible; unable to hide a keen curiosity, he stays carefully away as the magic-workers do what is necessary, in support and in direct burning hand.

"Sssk. One is pleased that the madness is ended," he rumbles quietly, dulling cold flitting beneath the scales. "Still, it will be time before one returns. There are other tasks to complete. One owes... Greenspeakers a debt. Must be repaid." He pauses, glancing down with a wry rumble of humour.

"Never let goblin softskin things cut down trees as they like. It gets one... ssk. Spoken to. So much."

Merek looks to the druid, while he nods a bit to the woman, "Of course," he notes, then he walks along to the camp, to the place where he was treating people. He thinks back to the people he saved, even those he couldn't. That will be the place that he will take care of. The man lifts up a hand while a fireball begins to form within the palm, then he swings that into the trees, the plants. The flames begin to lift.

The man takes a look to the place and begins to shrug off anything except for his potion belt and pants, the flames licking at skin though with the magic he works, the man will be protected. He makes sure to sweep the flame in little nice patterns that will dance along like a performer.

Shalethiste nods to the Druid at her words, her eyes sympathetic, but she has nothing more to say that the Warrior hasn't put forth. She thinks then of the lonely soul at Caldera Saute, a look spared to Thurid, a promise within her eyes, one they share.

The burning goes as she expects, and the Mul'niessa stares into the constrained inferno, it's glow setting her copper tresses gleaming like writhing gold in the winds wrought of it's heat. She reaches up to the druid's shoulder in a silent offer of support and compassion, even as her thoughts tumble and weave between consideration for Gentle Zanalilla, pitting her strength against the great conflagration of the mountain, and her actions during this entire affair, knowing Eluna stands yet with her over the matter, yet wondering beyond hope that she still honors her mother...

...whatever her fate has become.

"We've done by our struggles, in honor and compassion a great thing..." she says at last, well into the burn, "I've never stood with such stalwart companions, and hope to call you friends until our times are done."

"I know it will, it's just so sad." Ovola sniffles, watching as the flames lick and dance. The grass is not the best tinder, it's mashed and half rotten, partially buried and covered in mud. She calls out, "More! Use more fire! Even the building. As much magic as you have!"

She sniffs again, "The trees will endure, and saplings will sprout from their stumps. It's still hard to see." Ovolo stands, leaning into Shalethiste's comforting touch, taking strength.

The flames grow higher and higher.

Thurid has found herself watching the flames spread and grow, she glances towards Shalethiste. "Aye. And you as well. I thought our knowing one another'd be cut abruptly short on that airship." she says- she looks faintly green just thinking about it. "It's been a difficult few months, but I think we're stronger, and the world's a might better for it. Even if the nobles are still scheming and plotting and shoving their noses so far up each others arses they can smell one another's breath." she grumps a bit.

A pause, "There's still work to do, mind. And I'd be glad to have your help doing it. There's that vampire, Gentle Zanilla. And I need to track down my dance partner, one of these days." she says, cracking a faint smirk at that.

Merek looks then to the flame, while he nods a bit. The man begins to lift up both of those hands, while he weaves the magic. Then he begins to sling the fireballs, a countless amount while they all strike in different places, while he patterns them into a sigil, then he begins to fully unleash the spell, combining them with pure magic while he begins to light the field.

The fires spread as the Seer pours more magic into it. Fireballs exploding everywhere, like a helm of brilliance popping. The flames are all colours, yellows, oranges and reds, and even blues and greens as certain fuel are caught and consumed.

The Waystation just about vanishes, a hulking shadow glimpsed between the sheets of flames. They reach almost to the tree-tops, and among the border trees, easily engulf them and reduce them to ash.

The conflagration seems to go on forever. It takes all evidence the DEVA Station was ever here, any lingering spore or parasite, vaporized to harmlessness. The heat washes outwards in a wave that dries the surrounding area. It can be seen from Alexandria, a distant glow on the horizon. Ships on the Inmost Sea catch sight and wonder what has transpired.

And then it is done. The last tongues flicker out. The earth is burns at a touch, it will be hot for days.

And when it has cooled, Ovola will be there, to use her magics and restore the Green World. New grasses, flowers, trees will sprout, right up to the blackened building. In a few days, life will return, in a few weeks, a rush of growth with spring. In a year, with druidic assistance, saplings will have grown strong, thick. It will be as if the quarantine camp was never here.

The memories forged in that cruicible will persist, though the earth heal over. DEVA Station is gone.

Her heroes remain.
