The Explorer's Guild has recommended all of you for this job, but it has come at short notice. You find yourself in a fancy office of the Crowbite Company. It’s a newly established trading business that just opened its doors about a fortnight ago.

Across from you is a desk made of cherry wood, suited for such a place, and behind it is a Gobbo who takes meticulous care of his clothes and personal looks. As he glances up from his papers, he motions the party to draw near. "I have an emergency, though the Guild seems to not think it so. It took a lot of coin to commission this job as quickly as I have, and time is of the essence."

With a sigh, the man rings a small bell that had sat on the corner of his desk, an associate quickly arriving at it's chime. Soon, the Gobbo is speaking again, "I am Crow, owner and primary investor in this business. I will not waste your time, or mine." a document produced from his employee to the party. It shows a a list of goods that were assigned to a caravan. "I heard from one of my agents that my product never arrived, and they should have been in Tref this morning. Normally a few hours wouldn’t be an issue, but someone has already attempted to buy out my contract and supply the goods instead. Travelers along the road had seen my wagons pass them a couple hours from the settlement, and then arrived before the supplies did. They’re missing." a firm tone taken.

"Not a huge leap to make." Namira says from the back. She's still wearing her clerical vestments of Vardama, but underneath of it is a bit more...clanky. "So...the question is...where is it? that's where we come in, right?"

Durgash nods gravely at the goblin. "You want us to locate your goods? And your competitor's trying to sell goods that might be yours?" He nods in understanding, and nods as Namira asks where we're going. "Point us in the direction, we'll take care of the rest."

Cryosanthia listens to the explanation, nodding, her tail slowly curling. She looks over the list before passing it along, "Well, the obvious place to look would be along the road within two hours of Tref. If there isn't a side road, there must have been a place to pull off otherwise the other travelers would have seen them again. These other travelers, reliable enough, yes? How many hours have elapsed, and do you have a fast way for us to travel?"

Shin is mostly there and off to one side. Mostly because the last time a Goblin saw Mirai, they wanted to stick things in her that didn't sound nice. So he's currently by the tigress doing his part of keeping her calm by giving her ear scratches as he listens in. Considering, he looks over. "This does sound pretty simply. What is the full request on this? Discover the missing goods and bring in the guilty group?"

"You are more astute than I would of given credit. For that you have my thanks." Crow's gratitude radiating, despite his half-insult. "The stretch of land you need to search is not so large, as the Sith-Makar pointed out. I am at the limit of my manpower. Slanderous rumors have been spread through the streets here in Alexandria, and it has made hiring drivers rough." noting the second issue, but waving a hand. "I do have a spare cart, and some good mules for you to make use of while working for me. I will handle the soured business here, but I need you to get those goods back. I have too much invested, and I am stretched too thin to lose this deal." his yellow eyes glancing then to Shin. "I care not what you do with the offenders. It is my business first, revenge second."

Durgash peers at the mention of driving a cart, and he says to the others, "I hope one of you can, my last attempt was ... complicated." It wasn't bad per se, but that was entirely luck. "We'll get going right away," he says. Namira raises a hand and smiles. "No." She says before looking back. "The offenders Shall be brought back if need be, but well....resisting, and I shall pray for them...."

"All right," Cryosanthia says, looking at the others, then back to Crow, "there are other possibilities I can think of, that the Tref gate guards diverted it, or one of your underlings received it and pretended not to, although I think bandits are much more likely. If you have any suspicions of corruption though, let us know."

"I have no skill with wagons. You were good that last time, Durgash." The white sith says, "and I'm ready to go, unless there's another thing you can think of, Crow." Crow smirks to Namira, a hand slapping that bell one more time. "Revenge at this level of game doesn't begin with murder. I leave the offenders to you. My retaliation will be a bit more.... economic." yellow eyes peering, the patter of footsteps heard as his assistant arrives. "Get them the cart."

To Cryosanthia, Crow nods after barking his order. "This may be, but for what I pay, I'd expect more loyalty from my men. Tref is a rough patch, this is true. However, I have mercenaries who went missing with it. Some of them helped me build this place. If they wanted to skip out they could have done so long ago." the assistant rushing to follow orders as Crow hops from his seat. "I paid a lot for competence. I have a good feeling about you lot."

The road to Tref is a bit tedious and boring. It takes a good part of the evening for the party to cover ground in the cart, and the sun has already begun to set behind the clouds that pour sleet and snow. They are still a fair distance from the town, but the wagons would have disappeared somewhere between this point, and their destination of delivery. The surrounding area is mostly flat and whatever happened had to draw the wagons far from the road, as there is no place near here for obvious cover. Luckily, the mules seem fine even without a skilled driver. Quality, right?

Shin looks thoughtful on the ride out. Looking over the lay of the land. Then looks around some more. "Hm.... hm... hey, Mirai, this is almost like our lord's trading routes.... that one time we went with them and were almost ambushed before we scared them off, remember?" The tigress gives a growl and a huff. Then Shin turns to the others, "I think there was a few good places that could hide such theft. It's a few miles off the road, however. We found it before when we were hunting."

Durgash wonders to his erstwhile companions, "Any of you know about tracking? I can't much tell you except mountains are high and water is blue." (fixed)

Namira has that lovely elvensight, so she does notice fine details. It's not long before she raches down and lifts a weapon from under the snow. "I think we have a problem." She says softly....and clearly looking at...something. "there's a lot of weapons under the snow....and blood."

During the ride, Cryosanthia rambles strategically while she keeps an eye on the sides of the road, looking for tracks, unusual foliage, outcrops or other optics something might have slipped behind. "Shin, I know you and Mirai are effective up close and at range. I'm not that good at range, up close, I'm effective, but not as strong as Durgash. Expect... well, what you would expect from a rapier. And..."

"...I see some also. There and... there was a fight, there. Blood. It looks like they were driven west. I can't tell, is there a track, or do we go afoot?" Durgash will turn the cart off the road - his attention has all been on driving, and he's winging it pretty much - and go wherever he's told to go.

"Despite appearances, I don't have a lot of winter experience. You seem to know this area Shin, do you remember the ambush spots? Would your tiger be able to tell if we're coming up on someone?" Cryosanthia asks, moving to the front seat, so she can scan ahead.

Shin shakes his head, "Our bond is not like that." He says towards the others. "Mirai is my trusted companion, but I can not tell her exactly what to do. I do remember the most likely spots. The most appropriate one is that way." He points down the trail. "A few miles there. The grove was a good camping spot, but hell to get back to the main road from."

"It's possible they were hiding over there." Namira says pointing to the other side of the road. "and...it was likely a hiding spot over there."

Durgash is not bothered by the time of day, at least. Darkvision helps tremendously with that. "I can keep us from running into ravines, and they won't see any torchlight from us," he says. "And we can pause when you actually spot them and sneak from there? They loaned us the wagon, I do not want to abandon it someplace. But if you guys can track them back to their lair, we can ambush them."

Namira says, "be careful though. I'm seeing uneven ground as well.." She says to them all."

The white sith-makar hops off the cart. "I'll check it quickly." Stomp, stomp, stomp, she moves through the snow, high stepping and flicking her feet, concentrating on staying upright, to see what she can find. She finds a pit.

>wffffff<

She drops, falling to her waist in the ground. "Uh! Oh. Okay, there's a Crowbite Merecenary here. And a deadfall or a dugout."

Shin looks over as he sees that happen. And makes his way over to help the white sith out of the hole in the ground. "You alright down there?" He thinks, "Oh, is the mercenary's neck bent at an odd angle? Could tell if the fall killed him that way." Durgash will steer around the deadfall. "Pick up the body, put him in the cart," he suggests. "Their families won't like it, but it's worse being dead and missing in the wilderness."

As the others hidey-holes are inspected, only one body was found. The others contained trash, remains of food, and what might be frozen piss. This was no random attack. These men waited for a specific target.

Cryosanthia hands up the body first, then takes Shin's hand and accepts assistance. "I think he was killed then stashed, and the snow cover got too thick. There weren't any spikes, like some defensive pits.

She brushes herself off, then carries the body back to the cart, placing it in the back.

The cart does well on the plains, as the donkeys pull through the snow with little care for the ice and cold. About an hour of travel sees the sun dip from the sky and night fall. It's about that much time again before Durgash can see some trees coming to his line of sight on the horizon, and this would be about the spot that Shin had spoke of. It's still snowing, making any attempt to see further and through the dense bit of foliage hard. The mules are still steady, but it has been slower going since leaving the road. They have to forge their own trail, but have done well.

"This...is going to be a difficult fight." Namira says inspecting the body. "He died to a blade, but there was also fire involved....likely magic. There are burns on him...but none on his clothing. Expect a caster."

Durgash will continue going forward with the wagon until our destination is in sight, just a couple miles away. "No one's going to come this far out into nowhere to steal it for the short time we'll be away," he explains. Just the same, he'll tie the reins to a thick tree.

"Ok." Cryosanthia says, nodding as Namira explains about the caster and potential dangers. She hops over the side of the cart into the snow. "Is anyone good at stealth. Do you think it would better to approach as a group, or with one out front and the others trailing?"

Shin shakes his head. "No. But for now, let us remain quiet. We need to find them first." He says to the others, keeping his glaive in hand and low near the snow just in case. Mirai follows along even more silently than her companion.

The party has chosen to advance without the cart, and this was good as they were able to move more quietly. As they get into the small woods they see four wagons in a clearing not far in. The manifest only declared the caravan as having two. The party is able to see four of the Crowbites as captives tied and gagged, and one of them wounded but stable.

There are also three figures in the camp around a shielded fire. Two are wearing leather gear, and one a set of robes. They intentionally have tried to look as plain as possible, hiding their faces. The party might of had surprise, but a fourth figure draws attention of the group and he comes across them on his patrol. He is heavily armored, and a helmet obscuring his face. The first group are 30ft near the wagons, but the armored lookout is only 15ft and in the treeline with our heroes. Cryosanthia is the only one that remains unseen when the fight sparks.

"We have company" The surprised man in armor yells, and rushes at Durgash with his axe. He doesn't seem to fear the orc, and takes a swing. Luckily he didn't have time to warm up, and the slice goes wide, and misses his target.

The two clad in leather take action at the warning. The small one draws his weapon, and closes towards the group, stopping 5ft shy of Namira. The medium figure draws a bow and moves to take cover from the party behind the nearest cart to the party of the four.

The white sith-makar isn't far behind, loping along after it as she whips out her rapier.

Durgash recoils as his breastplate is rent by the mighty axeblow, and blood seeps from the wound. Luckily, it's not too deep, and, fueled with rage, he counterattacks savagely. It's all offense at this point, neither one of them paying much mind to defense, the weapons so heavy that the protective value is almost nil. Shin, meanwhile, just waits a second and literally slaps his glaive down on the poor archer's head. Mirai meanwhile takes a bite out of the caster's legs before Shin can turn to head over. His glaive is still held ready. The sharp blade is now stained with blood, and the tassel on the base of the blade moves a little as he looks around. Mirai, meanwhile, looks ready to pounce again in her half-healed state thanks to Namira.

Looking over to the archer, Namira then turns her gaze towards the robed one....and lets out a breath before walking her way over. "Look pasty....From what I've seen, you're either out of, or nearly out of spells. So, this is going to be the one chance you have to surrender, before tall green ang ugly over there realizes there's an enemy left and runs over here, frothing at the mouth, and chops you in half like he did with the big armored guy he faced. Now, if your buddy didn't stand a chance against him, I think you'd have enough time to crap yourself before he chops your head off. So...how about you surrender? Cryosanthia is focused on this wizard, and frustrated with missing with her rapier. She throws it down and her hands turn into claws. She slashes. Namira closed in on the fight, but talked about Durgash, and while the robed bandit was offered a surrender, he didn't do it fast enough for her. One connects, solidly rending him open, the other scrapes across the side of the cart. She watches as the body crumples and slides down. Stares, snorting, willing herself to calm down.

Namira stares at the robed one as he's clawed open and.....then to Cryosanthia. "Clearly...I didn't present the right threat to him." She then rolls her eyes. "Oh well. They reap what they sow." She says walking her way over to the tiger and nudges it's tail....letting her know she's there. "Hi there. I'm not gonna hurt you." She says softly, and at length before she places a hand on the tiger's spine....calling out for a blessing to the Dread Lady....and making the tiger's wounds close even more.

The prisoners are grateful that they are rescued without another loss to their ranks, but the Sith-Makar and the Oruch seem to put them on their guard as they just stare at the party quietly from where they were being kept. The injured mercenary is trying to talk, but he can't be understood because of the gag in his mouth, but all is suddenly quiet in the camp after the heat

Durgash pants hard as he comes down from his rage, planting the tip of his blade in the snow. He pulls out a rag and cleans the blood and gore from it before re-sheathing it, then pulls out a dagger, truly tiny in his huge hands, and he'll cut the bindings and the gags on the prisoners. He can't help if they're scared of him, he's honestly not even trying to be fearsome. Unlike some of his kin.

Bringing the glaive around, a flick is given to clean most of the blood and other parts off of it before Shin pulls a cloth to wipe it clean. Moving towards the others, he looks around carefully. "I think we are safe." He says towards the others, then moves over to ungag the injured mercenary so he can talk along with untieing the prisoners. "Be at ease. Crow sent us."

Mirai meanwhile flickers her tail, almost growling before the healing happens and she gives off a more rumbling purring sound. The tigress sits down where she is now that the battle is over, waiting it seems to see what to do next. The white-scaled sith picks up her rapier and wipes it off in the snow, shakes it, then sticks it in her belt. Her eyes follow Namira, "You're lucky he didn't have a second spell to unload on you like he did Mirai, and there were three others to save if you wanted one. I've had enough trouble with magical beings surrendering, and if he was going to say something he had several chances before. Next time, let me know you'd like me to stop." Namira looks over to Cryosanthia and chuckles. "you misunderstand. I don't care. I merely gave him a chance to prolong his life before he eventually died. He just died sooner, rather than later." She then shrugs. "He was out of spells, judging by the panic on his face, but...as I said..he reaps what he sows."

"Oh." Cryosanthia says, thinking about it, then thinking a little more. Then the silence has gone on long enough she's going to feel even more foolish replying, so she doesn't. She turns and stalks back to the carts, and looks through them, comparing the contents with the list they were given earler. After a little while, she's quietly humming and tapping on things as she goes through it all. "I think there's more than what we're after."

As the prisoners are being freed the party learns what was going on. The injured mercenary reveals his name to be Eric, and that these men assaulted them on the road. That much was known. The part that might raise eyebrows is that the stolen goods were being transferred to different crates with the seal of a different company. They forced the Crowbite men to account for what was in their order, and then were falsifying paperwork about where this inventory came from. The evidence is there, but nothing to tie them to any real business in Alexandria. Without being able to question them, it is unknown if they were hired, or just very smart bandits.

Upon delivering the goods with the remaining Crowbite Company men, that new logo on the boxes seem to match the details of the 'business' that tried to lure away Crow's contracts. Without further evidence the rest is left up to guess, but Crow got what he wanted, and his business will survive another day.
