  • Title: Cloaker and Diggers
  • Emitter: Whirlpool
  • Characters: Paenitia, Dax, Ignis, Imane, Randolf, Vaera, Lyme
  • Place: The Redridge Mines
  • Time: Saturday, October 30, 2021, 10:01 PM
  • Summary: Adventurers are called to a Redridge mine. Something has been killing the miners and the owners want someone to go check it out. Suddenly the Explorer's Guild is golden again. Paenitia, Dax, Ignis, Image, Randolf, Vaera and Lyme, almost a full squad, turn out to go delving. The ones who can see in the dark are up front, and everyone else isn't. They're in the back watching Dax cast shadows. Something dark and dangerous drops on Vaera, and a shot rings out. At the same time the wall crashes down, a giant stinky thing breaking through. Battle ensues, with the party fighting on two fronts, against a rotting Cave Giant, and a rotting Cloaker. Dead things, in the dead mines. They are made deader, or at least, unmoving and the party checks the rest of the coast to make sure it's clear. It's clear the owners have been covering up a few things, like that they are mining a giant's burial ground. Well, their secret is safe for now.

... the grey-black sky, absent Eluna's presence this evening, makes it hard to see anything. That is to say except for those who can see just fine in the dark, which is at least some of you.

At the moment, you've been stationed at a mine entrance in the mountains that separate Alexandria from the Desolation. The Everstorm that rocks the center of that blighted region makes the wind here ... feel different. Hard to say how. Just different.

The mine in question seems to have run into trouble. Namely, there are monsters inside of it that were last seen eating a few of the miners.

That's a pretty good reason for it to be closed.

Your job is to get it up and running again.

Paenitia, the little Knight in shiny new armour, which is painted crimson red thus making her a Red Knight in shining armour, is a Lucht Siuil and can't see in the dark. Her muffled voice comes from inside her helm, "The darkness, the wind, this is strange, or is just the enclosed sensation?"

Ramirez, the horse sized peacock who is half horse, and only crimson in eye-spots and a few other areas, can see in the dark. He can't go in mines, however, they're usually too tight. He squawks in agreement with his mistress and rider, 'Ruaaaah.'

With a dimly lit stone floating around her head, Dax has some visibility. Otherwise, she'd be as blind as an eyeless bat. "So, there be some monsters eatin' miners inside this 'ere mine. I ain't never been to a mine that ain't got monster innit." To the others she looks up and asks, "Ya'd think that eventually we'd all jus' get the point. Ya dig down, gonna find yerself some monsters." A bit of a shrug comes with her observation.

"Unfortunately going up to find needed resources to fuel that inconvenient thing called 'society' isn't exactly possible so down we go." answers Ignis as he puts a gauntled hand up to try and control the annoyance being caused by his wind swept hair in this bizarre air current. "...A little more care taken in -where- one opts to go down might be advised..." He shakes his head in disappointment and concern as he peers into the mind, seeing..absolutely nothing at all. "Huh. Great."

Imane offers, "Perhaps those with the ability to see in the darkness below should go ahead of those who need artificial light? That way the natural vision of those who can see isn't fouled by the light?"

"Perhaps because people like us are only called to mines when there is a problem, and not because they are running smoothly." The red sith-makar notes, lounging against a tree nearby as she checks over her firearms. She could see fine, but that was not a comfort given what may be inside, strong enough to kill several miners. "Regardless, we are here, and should see if the mine can be cleared out. Carefully, however."

GAME: Randolf casts Mage Armor. Caster Level: 5 DC: 15

Randolf is along for this particular assignment, because of -course- you'd want a dwarf with you when going into a mine. It's in the Adventurer's Guide, look it up. "We never had monsters in -my- hometown's mines," he grumbles as he lumbers along, wand already drawn and held at the ready. He pauses at the opening to the mineshaft, eyeing the support timbers with a critical eye. He harrumphs softly, shaking his head. "I can sure tell that -dwarves- dinnae delve this shaft," he grumbles.

"But I dinnae think it's liable tae collapse on us." He taps his wand against his palm, then makes a quick sweeping motion. "Re ex re su scutus!" he barks. The magic responds to his invocation, a ghostly wheel of silvery-blue hexagons whirling out from around him, locking into place for a second before vanishing with a flash. "Do we know what -kind- o' beasties are havin' miner-snacks down below?" he asks, looking over his shoulder towards his comrades. "Might help if we know what we're dealin' with."

Paenitia will be sticking by Dax, she is a good backup steed.

"I think that's a good call." remarks Ignis in agreement with Imane's suggestion. He turns towards Randolf and shakes his head, "Not that I know of but we're likely to find more information inside.. "I agree. I think we should proceed."

"Does it matter?" Dax asks, more pirate than dwarf in her tone. Though she looks at the Dwarf speaking and shakes her head, "There's monsters, eatin' folk." And she shrugs a bit at that, "At least that mean it ain't ghosts. Not fer nothin' that counts." And Dax wonders, last then, "So, yer all goin' in first? That seems unhealthy but do wha' ya wanna."

"Ramirez! I dismount." The Red Knight slides down his wing to clank solidly on the ground. She gets her shield, her silver sword and cold iron warhammer, and slings a lucern hammer across her back. She reaches around, finds Dax's thigh and pats it, "Okay, I stay with you to see."

"Ramirez, guard." She orders, then says more softly to the big bird-horse, "it is ok, I will not charge on her, that is still the thing only we do."

Although she would love to try.

Imane watches quietly though she does a double take and eyes the polearm a little, "Well, shall we make ready and be done with it then?"

Dax says, "So it sounds like we humans and the hang halfling behind by enough to allow the trap detectors, I mean, those with low-light in front to see."

Thus, Imane, Randolff, and Vaera. Paen, Dax and Ignis bringing up the rear.

Lyme is bringing up the rear -- and he can't see shite because of the interplay of light and shadow. Either that, or he's not really paying attention.

Pushing into the mines isn't hard. The tunnels here are large and wide, not to mention old. Multiple tracks for rail cars and more are plainly visible and look like they were abandoned swiftly. It doesn't even take long to find obvious signs of danger. A poor miner's body pasted into a wall, crushed by a boulder. A great gap in the mineshaft wall reveals a tunnel going further down. A question to be asked about whether or not you want to traverse this revealed tunnel, found so easily, is a good one.

Interestingly, it looks hand dug, like someone of considerable strength crushed stone and cracked their way through it until they broke through into this tunnel, right when the carts were being pushed out.

That's when Vaera looks up and sees ... a shape on the ceiling above them, shrouded in impossible darkness as it falls towards them.

<OOC> Whirlpool says, "Vaera, you have the surprise round."
<OOC> Vaera says, "Going to take a shot with the thunderbelcher, then retreat back up the tunnel while staying within 30 feet."

Behind the group, then...

There's a groaning, crumbling sound and then a bellowing roar. Oh, boy. That doesn't sound good. One of the mining carts gets kicked over as the massive, ogre-sized creature wielding a crude axe *erupts* from the mineshaft's wall.

It's bellowing in its own, giant-kin language. "sewi bizu ine tejemiro arifi yiwedali"

It smells ... rotten somehow. <unknown>

Vaera stops, her eyes glancing to the tunnely, and then slightly upwards. Her weapon was already deployed and loaded, and quickly she jerks it upwards, taking aim and firing, a flash of blue lightning illuminating the tunnel for a split second with an accompanying crack of noise, before she ducks backwards, already slipping a new round into side of the weapon. "On the ceiling, in the darkness!" She growls, keeping an eye on where she saw it. "Get back before it strikes!"

...and fall it does! It was aiming for Vaera but the thunderbelcher blasting through it has let the cloaked creature hit the ground instead of them.

A burbling hiss comes from it. It too smells rotten, cloak fluttering in the darkness. It's ... very dark. Did we mention that?

Lyme turns around, eyes widening at the appearance of the cave giant. He curses with feeling, and pulls a vial from his belt and smashes it on his falchion's blade. Taking a moment to tilt his sword, the oil within gleams with a blue light as it limns the edge.

The dawn elf shoots his bow and does some damage.

There are two monsters, the party is divided into two groups, to a certain extent. One was above Vaera and company, the other popped out from the walls behind the rest of the group. Only one of them is obviously a giant. Both are pretty large. The other one is more shrouded in unnatural darkness.

Ignis is usually prone to be more restrained and think matters through..to not assume the worst of enemies and threats he's encountered. But the tales of the murdered miners coupled with this ambush attempt on their lives causes him to make his mind up rather quickly on this particular front and within a space of a few seconds of the beasts attacks and arrivals and the gunshot going off, the Sunguard is rushing forward in a sudden burst of movement. Sunlight wraps about his blade as he draws it, leaving contrails as divine energy ripples through him and his sword as it arcs around to strike at the creature shrouded in darkness.

GAME: Randolf casts Haste. Caster Level: 5 DC: 17
<OOC> Randolf says, "Let's go with... Paen, Ignis, Lyme, Dax, and Imane. ;_;"

Randolf boggles as the giant comes slamming down and thunders that challenge. And the shadowy figure bursting through the wall does nothing to enhance the burly dwarf's calm. His people have feuded with giants for centuries, and techniques that were drilled into him as a beardling come leaping to the fore on reflex. But -he- has an ace up his sleeve that his storied ancestors did not--he has his magic. He digs into a pouch at his hip for a strip of licorice root, rolling the fibrous shred into a ball and crushing it between thumb and forefinger to release the astringent oils. He brings up his wand, sweeping it out to indicate his comrades.

"RE EX RAYA ZOS ALLEGROS!" he booms, snapping his wand out in a final flourish. "HAH!" Golden rotating clock-faces appear over the heads of Dax, Ignis, Lyme, Paenitia, and Imane, their hands whirling in circles as the sound of accelerating ticking can be heard briefly, before the display vanishes. Baring his teeth in a snarl, he turns, leveling his wand at the giant. "YOU HUNGRY?! HOW'S A FACE FULL O' LIGHTNING SOUND! C'MON, YE DOSS CUNT, *BRING IT*!!" he roars.

And her claws are ready, she steps forward, things die from claws even big things. Though she suddenly feels like the whole world is going that much slower as she starts to swing, it startles her enough that her first two swipes completely miss the broad side of this barn. The next wolverine-esque shredder impression works out a bit better as she starts trying to burrow her way through one of those giant's legs.

Lyme gets in there, moving quickly. He swings once, too eagerly, and almost drops his sword, then steps in with another strike, hitting the rotting giant just behind the knee. The oiled blade flashes, and there's almost a smell of sizzling.

Dax yawns, "I feel so tired."

Imane says, "I got your back!" He vanishes in the darkness behind Dax.

"Arch, Ah'll shew you how to bloody mine." Randolf says, taking on his ancestral foe. He makes the critical mistake of looking up, at a giant while being a dwarf. At a moldy, dead and rotting giant. "Me mamma's grave it's like lookin' at an explode fungus."

Sunlight washes over Ignis and dissipates as the divine gift of Daeus diminishes and leaves him to his own determination and will. The first strike was strong and as he feels the haste of Randolfs magic rush over him he allows a smile. Perhaps it's time for a quip!

"You all may have terrorized these miners but we're--oop!"

It's still a little early in this for him to try and act cool. His follow up swing is horrible and sloppy and he stumbles, nearly falling past the shadowy creature and into a mine cart. A last minute recovery thanks to the arcane magic on him enables him to spin and bring his sword around again in a wide arc but it's a far cry from his previous blow and he's left reeling in order to regain his balance.

He moves into the darkness surrounding the giant as well.

One thing Vaera realizes, quickly, is that it's not cloth. Not cloth at all.

It's flesh... It's all thin flesh. Thin, *rotting* flesh that has bundled them up, pulling her close to a razor sharp, circular maw that serves as its core. Fetid, rotten breath and teeth gnaw at her before she slips away entirely, a spiked tail lashing out at her as she tries to free herself before it moves back to grab at them once more.

Meanwhile, the horrible, rotting giant swings at Dax, her claws serving to help her deflect the blade before he rounds a backhand swing that wounds Lyme significantly. He rumbles in jotun again.

Also, it's now dead, a secondary success in comparison to the first, and one she must share.

The little lucht Knight has an easy task, swing at the cloaker. She can't see it all that well, but it is darker than the rest of the cave, so she aims for that. Fwap! Thwup, Plffff. Her warhammer hits the fleshy creature, making sick, meat pounding noises.

It's also a bit like beating laundry sheets on a line.

After a flurry and a wet sound like a sail crashing to the decks she stops, "Have we kill the thing? Is there more light?"

Vaera was busy pulling bits out of her weapon, even folding it part in half to get several pieces out of the hinge that had somehow managed to get lodged there. By the time it was out, when she was considering swapping to her other dragonspitter, the creature had fallen.

Vaera chuffs and takes a look around. "My thanks, knight, for that." She states simply, taking a moment to wipe the blood off of her shoulder.

All that's left is to clear the mine and make sure there are no others. It definitely looks like this was it. You're not hearing any other rumbling. A poke down the tunnels revealed by the monster smashing through the wall reveals a few other giant bodies. Looks like the mine-owners quietly resealed those places back up and kept digging.

The dead don't exactly like being bothered.

The negligence of mine owners doesn't surprise the Dark Lucht. Isobar has many mines, many miners, many secrets and many dead.

Including a giant of a baron egotistical enough to compare himself to a metal, that managed his mines worse than this one.

And is deader than the giants, and no one is bothered, especially not the little Red Knight who helped make him that way. Just as she did here. As they did here.

Ignore adventurers at your peril.
