Avourel

Background

  • Meira Avourel is Yelrona's father.
  • He was a Llyranesi Rogue and Elunite Acquisitioner up until the 980s.
  • He left the Mythwood in the 980s pursuing an artifact known as the Hand of Ilris.
  • He tracked the Hand to the possession of an agent of the Illuminated Order in Alexandria. During the Merkebah Siege, he obtained the Hand.
  • Unbeknownst to Avourel, the Hand of Ilris was [1] with a Drawback that makes its user Evil. When he obtained it he became evil.
  • Evil Avourel promptly abandoned the Acquisitioners, the Elunites, and his family in favor of a life of debauchery.
  • He thereby came to the attention of a secretive cabal of necromancers, who recruited him to secure a variety of necromantic artifacts for their own use. He's been working with them ever since... about 15 years... and has been gradually rising in the ranks.
  • He has a rival within the cabal who wants to see him destroyed. For complicated reasons, she can't just attack him, but she has become aware of Yelrona looking for him, and figures she might make things difficult for him. So she arranged for Rona to obtain the fragments of Ilris' Binder.

Cabal

Kind of a necromancer mutual support group, active for several centuries.

They maintain an archive of necromantic magic items that the Acquisitioners have been after for a long time.

Ilris

Ilris was a minor Kulthian noble starting around -150, an Artificer/Necromancer who specialized in necrotech and was reknowned for her command of artifice-augmented undead.

During the final decades of the Kulthian empire, she was actively involved with the Taaran cult. Demon-summoning was a big part of Taaran culture, which Ilris was very bad at, both because she was multiclassed and because Conjuration was one of her opposition schools. So with the help of a friendly Shadowveil she constructed a magical device to facilitate demon summoning: basically a combined wand of |Greater Planar Binding, Circle against Evil, and Anchor, with some specialized bonuses and limitations. It came to be known as the Hand of Ilris.

Over the next century or so, Ilris made a variety of refinements to the Hand. Some of those attempts failed, one of which [2] the Hand with a Drawback that makes its user Evil. Since Ilris was already Evil, she never bothered undoing that one.

Ilris was killed when her Tower exploded during the Sundering. Several of her artifacts survived the explosion, including the Hand and fragments of her Binder.

The Binder fragments ended up in Charn, where they were used by a number of Artificers over the centuries as part of their research. There's nothing particularly significant about them beyond that, but they do include some specifications for the Hand... not enough to reproduce it, but a lot of information about it.

Hand of Ilris

The Hand of Ilris is a necrotech device designed to facilitate demon-summoning. It is not especially useful to an actual high-level Wizard or Cleric who can cast demon-summoning spells themselves, but it can provide a bit of a boost. It is more useful to lower-level casters, or Wizards who have Conjuring as their opposition school and thus find demon-summoning difficult.

Details:

  • Its user can cast |Greater Planar Binding once per night, but can only summon a | Balor Demon... either a named one, or the "nearest" one.
  • It can cast Circle against Evil at will, but only focused inward. It does this automatically when it casts a Planar Binding spell. Magic circles cast by the Hand get a Fortitude save against attempts to disrupt them.
  • It can cast Anchor at will, but only against creatures it has summoned. It does this automatically when it casts a Planar Binding spell.
  • If used by someone of non-evil alignment it makes them evil, similar to the of Opposite Alignment.
  • Where relevant, the Hand's spells have a CL of 15.
