  • Emitter: Whirlpool
  • Characters: Ashes, MAC-B1G, Nels, Tenoc, Edinaz, Sabina
  • Place: A00: Alexandria
  • Time: Saturday, September 19, 2020, 9:20 PM
  • Summary: An old-ladies knitting society has disappeared during a party. A group of adventurers are brought to figure it out, Ash with her besties Sabina and Nels, plus fellow bootless Edinaz and Tenoc, with MAC-B1G rounding out the gruop, investigate. Some are more suited than others, Tenoc is unable to come inside, Nels is certain that the house is not an airship, although the biddies might have left in one, and MAC-B1G logically deduces the old women have turned into their alcoholic drinks. Ashes, determines this is not the case, and she and Sabina read a book of poetry that Nels discovered. This, is a mistake as it summons some kind of Eldrich Abomination Spider that is absorbing the old women into its abdomen. Battle Ensues, with Edinaz and MAC-B1G grabbing the creature and hauling it far enough out of the book that Nels can shoot at it, and the other women, Sabina and Ash, can pull free the older ones. Sabina rescues one, and Ash is surprisingly heroic, pulling the other four free as Nels continues to pound the spider-thing with bullets while the other two hold on. Now, there is a reversal, as it wants to escape, so the whole group works together attempting to shut the book, with MAC-B1G finally slamming it shut, and keeping it shut via the golem's immense weight. The old ladies are traumatized, and believe it's only been a few minutes, and Ash is now deaf.

... something terrible has happened. A group of elderly women has gone missing and you've been sent to find them. They were at a paricular house, doing whatever it is ladies of that particular age get up to when no one is about.

But they're missing. One of their relatives went to collect their grandmother from the home and found it ... abandoned.

In fact, the guards ahven't been able to locate any of the women and thus, suspecting advanced foul play, they have sought out your assistance. That's why *you* are at the house now, and frankly, it looks unimpressive. A reuglar, family home. A little on the larger side, actually, so someone amongst them is of means.

The guards have asked you to search it and see what conclusion you come to.

"Ok." The ashen Arvec says. She has been given simple orders. She proceeds to approach the home and open the front door. Next, she'll touch everything she can, going through the house and always turning right until she ends up at the front door again.

Of course, there may be some noise, should she run into something unexpected. Few plans survive encounter with the enemy. Or... old ladies... whatever the case might be.

Nels looks around the house with his professional skill, and considers at some length. This is alost certainly not an airship, so he determines with assurance that it did not fly away. The presence of the house in this current lccation confirms his assertions. "The house is definitely not an airship, so they could not have flown it away. They could, however, have flown away without the house."

MAC-B1G was tasked to not only adhere to the regulations of the city, but to learn more of its biological inhabitants. Much of this is acquired through detailed observation accompanied by queries for clarification. The unit has made several journeys and encountered many unexpected and unfamiliar circumstances and situations.

To date, none were as intriguing as the unexpected departure of progenitor units. Now a member of Task Force TUDOPU, it makes ingress into the structure to scan. It is possible that the progenitor units have merely extended their centor of mass outside their center of support and are unable to right themselves.

"Scanning..."

Tenoc stares at the thing. Structure. House. Thing. He shivers, rumbling darkly as he turn aside. Standing guard outside the house, he lets the others perfrom the searching they think is best.

So...

...searching.

The first thing you find is a lot of evidence that they had a party.

A *really* big party. There are half-drunk bottles of booze all over the living area in the downstairs part of the building, along with half-eaten plates and coats tossed over chairs. This place looks like a disaster hit it. Who knew old ladies could party so hard?

Seriously, though. This is what it looks like. A ... celebration that reeks of booze.

MAC-B1G notes the bottles partly-filled with liquid. One bottle is grasped and lifted, the volatile organic compounds analyzed as they evaporate and exit the container. "Progenitor units located."

It turns to the others and lifts the bottle.

"Datum: Quantity of vessels bearing liguid equals that of absent progenitor units.

Datum: Volatile compounds match those commonly emanating from biological units in this locale.

"Conclusion: Progenitor units rendered into liquid state and collected in vessels.

Solution: Deliver to appropriate facility for reconstitution."

Ashlee, being an Arvek Nar, knows what to do. "Nels, pick up all the bottles. This is alcohol abuse." <goblin-talk>

She picks up a bottle herself, sniffs it, then sets it down. Perhaps there is some un-eaten cake. She looks for helpful signs of magical mischief, actual little signs that say 'Eat Me' or 'Drink Me'. This might indicate a need to check the wainscotting.

Perhaps there are other things, like birthday cards or paper hats. She looks for relevant decorations. "Oh. They turned into the drinks?"

"Belay that order Nels." <goblin-talk>

Tenoc is standing. Guarding. Watching. Looming menacingly, and occasionally staring at the passers by.

STARING.

Nels looks around at the remains of the party and hrms. He picks up one of the bottles and has a swig of whatever remains. Well, he's got to see what they were drinking, right? It could be a clue! He peers around, and looks over at a book sitting on the center of the table. "Were they all reading together?" he asks aloud as he calls attention to the book. He peers at it. "101 Uses for a Candy Cottage? No, wait, wrong language." Belay? What was he doing? "No," he replies. "This is alcohol abuse," he replies and pours the dregs of the bottle on the ground. He sniffs sadly for a moment at the abuse of the poor alcohol.

Ash gives Nels a look, then crouches and touches the alcohol he's poured out.

MAC-B1G's faceplate pans to the unit with the endoskeletal-painted chassis. "Conclusion determined by available data."

"It's not them." Ashlee contradicts. "They didn't turn into alcohol."

The book appears to be poetry, at a glance. Eveidentally, they were having some kind of poetry recital? While drinking? Well, okaqy then...

The chairs are tipped over in spots. It's kind of disastrous in here. At least one bottle of booze has alreayd been spilled, filling your nostrils with alcohol odours.

Ash goes over to examine the book of poetry or cotton candy projects. She picks it up, then flips through looking at random pages.

Tenoc stands guard outside. He will not enter the house.

Nels peers at the poetry book. If it's not magic in the book he speculates, "Maybe there ws magic before, and when it made them vanish, the magic faded?" He thinks a bit longer, then says, "Or maybe it describes some place and they decided to go there?"

It's conclusion invalidated, MAC-B1G resumes scanning. Once of the chairs is examined in detail. It is familiar with its function and purpose, and that it is not positioned properly. It returns the chair to the upright position.

GAME: Ashes casts Detect Magic. Caster Level: 1 DC: 13

The ashen Arvec stares at the book of poetry. Right, she has a trick for when magic things are involved. It's called Detect Magic. Might be the right time to break it out. Her hand waves through an arcane gesture and her eyes begin to glow. With this extra insight, she surveys the room for lingering auras and examines the book again.

The book is GLOWING like WHOA. The Whole book.

Bina looks through the area of the house and notes the party-like afair of the place. Her brows, hidden by her half mask, rise as it's sugjested that the old ladies turned into wine. "My.. That would be.. dire if they did. But i've not heard of magics like that. How about we check coat pockets. And.. about the house for tracks?"

A closer look is necessary, but it seems like conjuration attuned magic!

Edinaz was walking the perimeter of the house, outside. Honest. He comes down into the basement, blinking at the smell. "This seems weird. There aren't any exterior tracks. ...was this a ritual?"

Ash shakes her head. She moves over to the book, holds it up. She examines it more closely, flipping a few pages. "Nels found this. It's glowing with magic. Every page. They were reading from it. Aloud."

She opens it randomly facing Sabina, so the tarrienite can have a look. "It's conjuration attuned magic."

The mention of magic diverts the large construct's focus on the furniture to the book and those in its vicinity. "Additional data significant. Updated hypothesis: progenitor units departed or disintegrated via mana manipulation."

The book is a poetry book! Like, it's wall to wall poetry. It looks like they were reading from it. The type of poetry varies. At first, it seems ... pretty suggestive? But as it is read, the lines start to blur a bit ... oh no.

They just read from the evil magic book.

Nels huhs at the book being magical, and nods at MAC's conclusion. "Yeah, they probably disintegrated themselves. Well, that mystery's solved. When do we get paid?" he wonders, looking around.

Edinaz pauses. "Conjuration magic? So what came when called?" He frowns around at the booze. "Whiskey demons?"

"Merek is good at poetry," Ashlee comments randomly. The books is wall to wall with it. Or perhaps cover to cover is more apt. The ashen Arvec turns page after page, looking for pictures. Something obvious like four old women trapped in a garden. No luck.

She flips back to the beginning, tries again. The poems vary, at first they seem pretty suggestive. Ash's ears twitch. She's feeling warm, her breath catches. The lines start to blur.

Oh no.

She's just read from the evil magic book.

And it was _GOOD_!

Voraciously, she coseys up beside Sabina and starts tearing through the pages with her.

Aloud, she's reading them aloud.

Bina flips through and finds a poem to read, trying to figure out what type of poetry is invilved. "Perhaps a cl.." She pauses and then sighs out loud. "What wandering webs of fate lay forth unto thy feet. Thy silken call. Thy touch a trap."

The book falls from Ashes and Sabina's grasp and hits the ground, it's pages spinning madly on their own. Great black spindly limbs break free from it, crashing on either side of it like a spider's while something begins pulling itself free. You can hear voices coming from the book. It sounds like very terrified elderly women, getting closer.

GAME: Edinaz casts Shield. Caster Level: 6 DC: 13

Edinaz spits curses, then turns that into an incantationo. He makes a shield of shimmering energy appear between him and the thing, then takes a step back at draws his swords.

Spiders!

Or something spider-like. Not the friendly size of spider either, a terrifyingly large size. Still, it's right there within easy reach. Ashlee reaches out her hand and touches the nearest leg.

That wasn't a great idea.

Something with an ever-shifting nature, horribly lovecraftian, emerging from the pages. It was bound because it hadn't finished eating the old ladies. Perhaps time moves more slowly in the book. No one knows.

"Ow." Ash's head hurts, a lot. The worst migraine imaginable. She puts her hands to her head as she staggers back.

Her words however, remain neutral, flat, she sounds almost bored. This is good, as the information she's sharing is terrifying.

"I've just lured a horrible eldritch abomination, a glimpse of proteaon chaos, into this world. It is anamthema to it. It's bound because it hasn't finished eating the old ladies. We may be able to rescue it if we can pull it further out of the book."

Nels acks as the spiderlimbs pop out from the book. That's bad! He pulls a few brass-cased rounds from his bandolier and slides them into his thunderbelcher, one by one, blessing them as he slides the action each time. Shouldering the weapon, he fires three times, smoke and thunder erupting as he attacks. Magical spider books baaaaaaad. Two shots hit, the other misses narrowly, the target small and his shots hasty as he fires so quickly.

MAC-B1G is not adverse to biological units, regardless of the quantity or type of appendages. This one appears non-native, however, and this is confirmed by Ashes. "Threat detected," it warns, for those not yet aware. "Extraction initiated," follows. Additional armor plating telescopes and extends across chassis before its large manipulating appendages attempt to attach themselves to one or more of the emerging legs.

Ash still has a headache. It's hard to think. Pulling it out is the right idea? That sounds right. She's squinting, the pounding in her head making her almost blind.

With effort, she waves her holy symbol in a big circle, then crosses it. "Feiu of the Tears, forbid it from attacking."

Acting. She almost said acting. Worst hangover ever, and she didn't get any drinking done or go to the party.

It's mind is so utterly alien it's hard to really be sure it can understand the mourner enough to be forbidden in the first place.

The ashen Arvec's hands close on an old woman's arm. She pulls! Ash is rather specialized, her skills are healing, staring, occasional knowledge and soothsaying. For physical things, it's best to bring a warrior instead.

No. She did not think that. It's a trick of the headache.

Everything got really loud, an ear-piercing scream, and then... silence.

Oh no. Ash's head already hurts, and her extra-big goblinoid ears did not do her any favours. They're hurting and bleeding too. She feels dizzy, and just a little nauseated.

Still, there are old women to save. She forces herself to approach the abomination again, grab the last old crone and pull her free. It's eerily silent.

The last lady is out.

<OOC> Nels will finish clearing the jam.

Nels 's misfire this time was apparently worse than last time, the quick-fix didn't work, so he'll plant the stock of the gun on the ground and stand on the bolt, jumping up and down on it until it finally springs open, disgorging a mangled brass cylinder. <OOC> Ashes says, "Slam the book!"
GAME: Ashes rolls CMB: (11)+2: 13

Closing the book seems like a good idea. Ashlee can't hear Sabina, but can grok what she's trying to do. She dives in beside her friend, getting her fingers on the cover, trying to squish it closed on the monstrous thing sticking out of it. She locks her elbows and puts all her weight on it, grunting with a grimace as she attempts to force the book closed.

She's got a lot of teeth. A LOT of teeth. No wonder she never smiles. Her lack of expression returns as she fails to shut the book.

Nels works the action on his thunderbelcher, sliding more rounds into the weapon and firing again and again. Gah!

GAME: MAC-B1G rolls Cmb: (9)+13: 22

Mac forces the book closed once the creature is further weakened by Nels and Edinaz's efforts.

It shuts, leaving the book vibrating in place. The war golem sits on it.

HE is nearly vaulted off it several times.

Bina sits near Mac panting softly. "Ooookay.. Well then. That was a thing." Her eyes are still wide as she calls out to their guard guide. "We're going to need a bonfire and a clamp! This book has got to go."

The book is turned over to the guards, held shut and bound, who eagerly whisk it away to the Arcanists.

...best they figure out what to do with it. The grandmothers are tended to, but they seem to think they were oinly gone for mere moments.

Ash wants to get her ears looked at, and her head. She staggers out of the house leaving the others to deal with the aftermath. Someone will have to tell the grandmothers what happened exactly, and she's unable to hear any thanks.
